Proposed Bill Calls For Reconciliation Between Turkey And Armenia

Washington — Bringing a new approach to a long-run-

ning Capitol Hill standoff, a Turkish-American coalition is

pushing a new bill in Congress that will call for reconcilia-

tion and dialogue between Turkey and Armenia while side-

stepping the question of whether the 1915 mass killing of

Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire was geno-

cide.

Armenian and Armenian-American advocacy groups

have long pressed the U.S. government to officially call the

killings genocide, while the Turks have fought hard against

such proposals in the U.S. and abroad. The issue has been

debated in Congress for years, without a resolution, and the

new bill may run into similar difficulties.

The new proposal, to be introduced by Rep. Curt Claw-

son (R., Fla.), will call on President Barack Obama to “work toward equitable, constructive, stable, and durable Armenian-Turkish

relations” by establishing a new presidential task force aimed at rapprochement.

This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the massacres—giving advocates and lobbyists renewed ammunition in the bat-

tle between the two countries over how the mass killings are remembered and commemorated by historians and governments.

The historical consensus is that as many as 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire in what is now Turkey.

Turkey says the issue of whether the killings were genocide isn’t for modern-day governments to decide, contests the number of

deaths and argues those killed were casualties of a larger armed conflict.

Genocide" In Nevada

On the occasion of the Centennial of Ar-

menian Genocide, Nevada Governor Brian

Sandoval issued a proclamation, declaring

April 19-26 as the “Days of Remembrance

of The Armenian Genocide”.

A similar resolution was adopted by the

Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, President

of Nevada State Senate Mark Hutchison.

Both resolutions call upon the President

of the United States and the Congress to

recognize the atrocities committed against

the Armenian people, and urge the Repub-

lic of Turkey to acknowledge the facts of the

Armenian Genocide.

spheres. This is what Iranologist Rubik

Danielian said during an April 4 press con-

ference.

“I can particularly mention the energy

sector. The lifting of sanctions on Iran im-

plies the reestablishment of cooperation be-

tween Iran and the West, and that, in its

turn, implies the construction of gas and oil

pipelines and the drawing of a roadmap for

the construction of those pipelines,” the Ira-

nologist mentioned, as “Armenpress” re-

ports.

Danielian emphasized that taking into

account the tense situation in the region

and the problems that Iran has with its

neighboring countries, particularly Turkey,

Armenia may have an unprecedented op-

portunity to become a transit country for

Iran's energy resources. “Time will show

what will happen in the future, but the fact

remains that Armenia will have that op-

portunity,” the Iranologist emphasized.

Arabologist Armen Petrosyan believes

that if a final agreement over Iran’s nuclear

program is reached in June or July, there

will be a certain rise in oil prices by fall.

The process, Nalbandyan said, proves

that even the most complex issues can be

resolved through negotiations.

Another Incident Between Orthodox Jew And

An Armenian Seminarian

Another incident between an ultra-Orthodox Jew-

ish man and an Armenian seminarian was registered in

Jerusalem.

On Saturday evening 17-year-old ultra-Orthodox

Jew spit at an Armenian seminarian. The Armenian

community of Jerusalem confirmed the reports for Ar-

menian News-NEWS.am.

As a result of a scuffle, the Jewish teen was hospi-

talized with head injury. The Armenian seminarian was

detained by police.

State Of Georgia Has Declared April 24th As

Armenian Genocide Remembrance DayThe House of Representatives of the State

of Georgia has commemorated the victims of

the Armenian Genocide and has adopted Res-

olution H. R. 904. As “Armenpress” reports,

citing the ANCA Facebook page, by H.R. 904,

Georgia has declared April 24th as Armenian

Genocide Remembrance Day.

Out of the 50 States of the United States of America, 42 have officially recognized the

Armenian Genocide.

German EconomistIn its April issue, Canada’s famous Ottawa Mag-

azine has published an interview with famous Ger-

man economist, President of the Institute for

Economic Research of Germany Hans Sinn. In the in-

terview with Steven Dale, Sinn has touched upon the

consequences of the Armenian Genocide and the op-

portunities to confront the growing barbarity

through peace.

As “Armenpress” reports, Sinn mentioned that

the Young Turks and Ataturk illegitimately pos-

sessed the homeland of the Armenians and Kurds by

initially planning and perpetrating the massacres

and the deportations of the Armenians and Kurds. The Armenians and Kurds had paid the

price before Ataturk was able to save the Ottoman Empire, the legal successor of which is

modern-day Turkey.

Sinn stressed the fact that the Armenian Genocide is an issue concerning all mankind

and not only the Turks and Armenians.

Awards At LACSEF

AGBU Vatche and Tamar Manoukian High School students Vahe Yacoubian, 11th

grade, and Daniel Yacoubian, 9th grade competed as a team in the 2015 Los Angeles

County Science and Engineering Fair, which was held at the Pasadena Convention Center

from March 26th -28. Their project entitled “Seawater Desalination and Purification Using

a Unique Solar Apparatus” was the winner of a $1000 Michelson Innovations and In-

vention Award for the Most Patentable Project. They were chosen from over a thousand

other projects.

In addition, Vahe and Daniel Yacoubian both won the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water

Prize Regional Award. The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is the most prestigious award

for a water-related science project at the high school level. As a result of their award, both

Vahe and Daniel have won entry into the California State Stockholm Junior Water Prize

Competition.

Vahe and Daniel Yacoubian are the sons of Dr. and Mrs. Stephan Yacoubian. They are

Our Dear Faithful Sons and Daugh-

ters in the Homeland and the Diaspora,

The joy of the glorious resurrection of

Christ once again soars in our souls. We

rejoice like the oil-bearing women, who

found the tomb of the Savior empty, and

heard the good news of His Resurrection

from the angels. We rejoice like the apos-

tles gathered together in the Upper Room

and the travelers on the road to Emmaus,

to whom the Risen Lord appeared and

dispersed their doubts and grief. The

darkened skies are now illuminated with

the rays of light of the resurrection; the

sorrow and sadness of the crucifixion

have been shaken off. Heaven is open and

hell is destroyed; death has been defeated

and life is victorious.

Our Lord, Christ the Savior, through

his sacrificial act on the cross and his

glorious resurrection, became a sacrifice

of salvation for mankind, which is dis-

persed everywhere, to all who receive

with faith. The priceless, divine act of

salvation makes pious souls worthy of

the grace of the heavenly kingdom; and as

the author of the hymn says, “He who

was crucified is risen and gave resurrec-

tion to you along with Him “

We have struggled for one century for

the universal recognition and condemna-

tion of the Genocide of the Armenians;

and we continue in this struggle with

faith in the triumph of justice. At times

the world heard us, at others disregarded

us, because it does not always listen and

remain faithful to Christ’s message of

peace and goodwill to men. The result of

which, the contemporary history of

mankind was again blackened by the

darkness of new genocides and wars.

Today as well, human life is tempest

tossed by conflict and bloodshed. On our

cradle of humanity – planet earth – the

enviable peace and universal goodwill

and solidarity still remain as unrealized

dreams. “Because God did not make

death, and he does not delight in the

death of the living.” (Wisdom 1:13).

Moreover, through His crucified and risen

Only Begotten Son, God has granted us

the grace to rise from the dead, which

compels nations and governments to ex-

press a unified and collective will, to pre-

vent the dangers threatening the peace

and welfare of humankind, to be greater

vigilant in the establishment of justice

and righteousness, in the work of univer-

sal condemnation of genocides. Other-

wise, the miserable paths of the world

shall continue to lead toward new

tragedies. Mankind is indebted to wipe

away the swelling sea of tears in the

world, to silence the thunder of killing

weapons before the helpless gaze, cries

and shrieks of orphans and needy chil-

dren who yearn for a bright childhood,

and to stamp out the evil of poverty.

Crucifixion must be defeated in the

world, and be replaced by resurrection.

With the joy of the Feast of the Holy

Umpqua Bank Branch Grand Opening In

Glendale, California

On Wednesday evening, March 25th,

Umpqua Bank celebrated the grand opening of

its newest branch in Glendale California. At-

tending the gala affair were bank and Govern-

ment representatives as well as a large number

of customers. After the traditional ribbon cutting

ceremony, guests were treated to a sumptuous

buffet, where bank management and employees

intermingled with customers, answering ques-

tions and, in general, building rapport.

Southern California president of Umpqua

Bank, Gil Dalmau, welcomed all and thanked

them for their presence. He offered a brief history of the bank and touched upon the many

services it provides to the communities it serves. He stated that the bank takes pride in the

personal attention it provides its customers. Even though the bank has experienced sub-

stantial growth, it still maintains its “small-town” character.

Umpqua Bank was founded in 1953 in Canyonville, Oregon, starting with only six

employees. In 1994, with Ray Davis taking the helm as President and CEO, a new strategy

and direction for the company was launched. As a result, the small community bank grew

and strengthened and today, has 350 branches throughout Oregon, California, Washington,

Idaho and Nevada, with over 4500 employees. Umpqua Bank has seven branches, which

"Sari Aghjik"- translated into Turkeyinto "Sari Gelin" is an Armenian songwhich was spread in Armenian populatedTurkish provinces in 19th century. The off-spring of Armenian Genocide survivorssing the song in different countries of theworld. The structure of the melody, base,and lads are Armenian. The word syllablescorrespond to the structure of the melodyonly in the Armenian version, whereasthere is a mismatch in the Turkish andAzerbaijani translations. The Turks as usualare trying to wipe off this piece from the Ar-menian heritage in Turkey by depicting itas a part of Turkish culture. The city of Aparan lies on one of Arme-nia’s main north-south highways, about 45miles north of Yerevan. The road is heavilytravelled with much of the traffic stoppingat the popular bakery on the highwaythere. Within the bakery are a number oftonirs used to bake bread. Tonirs are largebeer-keg shaped clay barrels traditionallyfired by wood at the bottom of the barrel.As a concession to modernity, however,these tonirs are fired by gas. Flatteneddough is slapped onto the inside wall of thetonir, and a few minutes later the bakedbread is peeled off. Available at the bakeryis a large assortment of breads as well assweet and savory pastries. Aparan is notedas well for its pure, refreshing water – avail-able at fountains along the street.

Other claims to fame are Aparan’s an-cient tombs on a hill to the west of thetown, though I think these are seldom vis-ited, as well as Aparan’s 4th C Basilica.Aparan’s major attraction, however, is itsmemorial commemorating the battle ofBash Aparan. This was the site of one ofthree heroic battles in May 1918 againstTurkish armies which invaded CaucasianArmenia. The Turkish intent was to finishoff the remnants of the Armenian nation inthe aftermath of 1915. The two other battleswere at Sardarapat and Karakillisa (nowVanatsor). Three Armenian victories savedthe Caucasian Armenians from annihila-tion and led to Armenia’s declaration of in-dependence on May 28, 1918; the firstindependent Armenian state in over 600years. Overlooking the Bash Aparan me-

morial is the tomb of General Dro Kanayan;an Armenian freedom fighter and the com-mander who led the fateful battle there.

Passing through Aparan on the wayhome I stopped to get some lavash bread(large thin sheets of bread) at the bakery. Iordered 3 sheets of lavash, figuring thatwould last a week or so. Much to my sur-prise the sheets of lavash were the size oftablecloths. As a result the lavash lastedwell over a month, but remained ediblethough a bit dry. I mentioned this to myfriend VT:

JD: “I just finished some lavash Ibought over a month ago. I’m surprisedthat it was still edible!”

VT: “Of course, lavash lasts forever.When it dries out just moisten it a bit. Bythe way, have you seen photos of those as-tronauts and cosmonauts in space?”

JD: “Yes, on tv. Why?”VT: “They’re fools, do you hear me,

fools! They squeeze their dinners out oftoothpaste tubes! When we Armenians gointo space we’re going to take lavash. Itlasts for ever.”

JD: “And I suppose when we land onthe moon – we’ll build a tonir?”

Abstract

In 2012 the Ministry of EmergencySituations in Armenia implemented anew 911 system modeled after the onecurrently in place in the United States.While a prehospital emergency medicalcare system is continuing to be devel-oped in some of the main cities of Ar-menia, a large portion of rural villagesoutside the reach of these cities are leftwith little or no care. This lecture willcover the current condition in the vil-lages in regards to the lack of access tomedical care and the public services that are available. There will be an introduction to theorganization Aid To Armenia (ATA) that was started in response to these needs and howATA is currently implementing projects to aid in areas where the system is lacking. The lec-ture will include an overview of the different projects that Aid To Armenia has conductedin Armenia since its inception in September of 2013, including their work with the GyumriAmbulance Service, World Vision, and the Children of Armenia Fund. Specific examplesfrom villages and ambulance services where ATA has conducted free trainings will be dis-cussed. The lecture will conclude with the future plans for ATA and the upcoming projectATA will be conducting in 100 villages over the next year as a way to commemorate the1915 genocide.

Jamie Kolar is a third generation Armenian born in southern California. She is a Fire-fighter Paramedic for Los Angeles County Fire Department and a Clinical Instructor at theUCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. In addition to her Paramedic license she is a cer-tified instructor for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS) andPediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). After a five week volunteer trip to Armeniathrough Birthright Armenia she started Aid To Armenia (ATA) to continue and expandthe volunteer work that she had started with the emergency medical services there. Tak-ing a leave of absence from work she lived in Armenia for a year to develop and begin im-plementing the trainings for ATA. During her time there she was able to visit over 30villages and trained just over 400 Armenians in first aid and CPR. She has since returnedto her job in Los Angeles and is continuing her work as ATA Director collecting donatedmedical equipment for Armenian ambulances and actively fundraising for new ATA proj-ects.

Drivers taking the Bay Bridge to San

Francisco will get some history with their

commute in the form of a sign for the

month of April.

Armenians around the world are re-

membering the genocide against them on

its 100th anniversary. This was the first

genocide of the 20th century.

They put up signs, memorials, even one

on Yerba Buena Island. A sign like this has-

n't been seen in this area until now.

"And it will be on Muni trains and

BARTs and on the 101 and off the Bay

Bridge. You'll be seeing in the next week,"

Armenian-American Kim Bardakian said.

Bardakian is one of 30,000 local mem-

bers of the Armenian community, many of

whom pitched in to pay the Treasure Island

Development Authority $10,500 for the

prime ad space, one that is supposed to be

non-political.

But is it?

"We did not evaluate it to be political,

but more of a memorial of historic events,"

Treasure Island Development Authority

spokesperson Robert Beck said.

The Armenian Genocide began 100

years ago this month. 1.3 million Armenian

Christians died at the hands of the Ottoman

Turkish government.

"They were killed in the deserts and by

starvation and by gruesome acts of vio-

lence," Bardakian said.

Even today, however, the Turkish gov-

ernment denies that the genocide ever hap-

pened, which does bring in the possible

political ramification and begs a question

about free speech.

What is to stop another more poten-

tially controversial group from asking for

the same space as well or for causing

demonstrations?

"We haven't had a problem in the past

with messages of a controversial nature

being requested or permitted. And we

don't see that this opens up a door for that,

either," Beck said.

"It's about genocide in general. Hitler is

often referred to with a famous quote that

he said, 'Who today remembers the Arme-

nians,'" Bardakian said.

This month on the Bay Bridge, we all

will.
