Japanese popular music in general.

• Modern J-pop music dates back to the 1960s with the popularity of 洋楽 (western music) such as the Beatles.

• Many かしゅ today start their fanbases as せいゆ (voice actors/actresses) for アニメ and/or Japanese dubs.

ヴィジュアル系 (Visual Kei)• Among the most popular sub-genres of ジェイロック is ヴィジュアル系

(literally “visual style”). ヴィジュアル系 is characterized by the use of メイキャップ , ふくざつな　かみ (elaborate hair), and costumes. Often, the band members resemble women.

• The sound and look are often punk/metal/glam-rock, as well as gothic and/or alternative rock.

• Visual kei fashion is mainly inspired by Victorian, Baroque, Regency, and Rococo fashion trends.

• Some bands include▫ The GAZETTE▫ Ayabie▫ Nightmare▫ TM Revolution▫ FLOW▫ Nightmare▫ Versailles

ボーカロイド (Vocaloid)• ヤマハの　プログラムの　ボーカロイドは　人気が　ある！ It is

quickly spreading across the globe.

• The popularity began with the Vocaloid 2 mascot, 初音　ミク ,

and the popularity of the original program rose upon her release,

with freelance musicians harnessing her ability to “sing”. 　歌いましょう！

• There is also the freeware program UTAU, which allows fans to

make their own “UTAUloid” and try to become famous among
