Columbus (c.1451-1506)

哥伦布发现新大陆（ 1492 ） （ 1-2-

3 ） Genoese-born navigator and

discover (or rediscover) of the New World. After much difficulty, he obtained the patronage of Firdinand and ⅤIsabella of Spain for his project of sailing west to reach the Orient. He left Palos (Aug.

3, 1492) with three ships and reached the Bahamas (Oct.12,14

92) He sailed to Cuba and Haiti before returning(1493) to Spain.

Columbus’ flagship （ 1-2-4 ）

Columbus’ voyage in 1492哥伦布航海示意图 This was Columbus’

first voyage. His second voyage (1493-96) took him to the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico and Jamaica, and a third (1498-1500) to Trinidad and caost of Venezuela. On his forth voyage (1502-04), he explored the coast of Central America.

Ferdinand Magellan(c.1480-1520)

麦哲伦 （ 1-2-4 ）

Portuguese navigator. Sailing with five ships from Spain (Sep. 20,1519), he reached coast of South America and navigated (1520) the strait which now bears his name. He crossed the Pacific and reached Philippines, where he was killed by natives. Of the five ships and approximately 270 men who set out, only one ship, commanded by del Cano, and seventeen men returned to Spain(Sept.6, 1522). But the Victoria was full of spices and land claims, and for this del Cano received a pension, an addition to his coat of arms, and a globe with the inscription, "You were the first to encircle me"
