Preface

Difference of the cultural thought between west and orient, wants by the different writing have their respective indication, it really difficult to peep the profound with subtle of literature and philosophy, especially, the dharma words really implicated deep Buddhism which enlightenment was stems from the gymnosophist to practice dharma for many years, penetrate writing to expresses the real intention, has been deeply profound and difficult, if translates into English again, more difficult to annotate gymnosophist intention in completely, always confusing the foreigner to see flowers through a mist alike. The refreshing dharma words has not dared to say each word a gem, but may provides last the people a pack of mind coolant, release worry and troublesome, shows slightly gratified. Hopes person of the deep fami l ia r Engl i sh Buddhism, can not hesitate to make comments, it can be reach the writing, the law and the principle to tactful, in order to preach the dharma over the world, teaching confused people, altogether achieve the bodhi, is for hoped.   東西方文化思想之差異,欲以不同文字

各自表述,實難窺其文學哲理深奧微妙之

處,尤以法語蘊藏甚深佛法,出自修行者苦

修多所年所悟之心法,透過文字表達真義,

已屬深澀艱難,倘再譯成英文,更難詮釋修

行者心意於周全不差,總令洋人有著霧裡看

花之迷惑!

  清涼法語未敢言句句珠璣,或可為時下

大眾提供一帖中藥心靈清涼劑,以紓心困,

解脫煩惱,略表欣慰。

  但願深諳英文佛法之人,能不吝切磋指

正,以達文、法、理圓融貫通,以利法揚四

海,廣化群迷,共成菩提,是為所盼!

何謂佛

佛就是慈悲、智慧、覺悟、道路、真理的

聖者,若不藉著佛法修行,就無法到佛的

世界。

What is Buddha?

Buddha is the saint of mercy, the wisdom, the enlightenment, the way, the truth. No one come to Buddha’s world except through Dharma.

親近佛

你們親近佛,佛就必親近你們。

Come near to Buddha

Come near to Buddha and He will come near to you.

學佛者

我們學佛者,外體雖然毀壞,內心卻一天新

似一天。

Learner of Buddhism

We learn Buddha , thought ou twardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

智慧者

要謹慎行事,不要像愚昧之人,

當個智慧之人,要愛惜光陰,因現時代邪惡。

A wiser

We very careful to anything, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

愚與覺

愚癡人以行惡為樂;

覺悟人以修行為樂。

Fool and enlightened

布施

施比受更有福。

生氣

生氣卻不可犯罪,不可整天含怒。

Angry

In your anger do not sin, do not all day while you are still angry.

貪財

貪財是萬惡之根源,有人貪戀錢財,卻被引

誘脫離了真道而造作罪惡,惡行終得惡報。

Eager for money

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and do sins, Evildoing will bring retribution. in the end.

奴隸

所有犯罪的,就是罪犯的奴隸,

我們不可再做罪犯的奴隸。

Slaves

Every one who sins is a slave to sin; we should no longer be slaves to sin.

賺到全世界

人若賺得全世界,賠上自己的生命,有何

益處?

人還能拿什麼來換取生命呢?

Gains the whole world

What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his life? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

悲與樂

與悲傷的人同悲;

與喜樂的人同樂。

Mourn with rejoice

Mourn with those who mourn, rejoice with those who rejoice.

看顧

人若不看顧親人,就是背離了真道。

Look after

If anyone does not provide for his relatives and family. He has denied the faith.

虛浮的外表

艷麗是虛假的,美容是虛浮的;

惟敬畏佛陀的人,必得稱讚。

Impractical appearance

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Buddha is to be praised

父母師長

咒罵父母師長的,他的心燈必滅,變為黑暗。

Parents and teacher

If a man curses his parents and teacher, his lamp of heart will be snuffed out in pitch darkness.

尊重婚姻

婚姻人人都當尊重,床也不可污穢,

因為苟合行淫的人,因果必要審判他的。

Respect the marriage

Marr iage shou ld be honored by a l l , and the marriage bed kept pure, for causation will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

為人妻子丈夫

做妻子的當順從自己的丈夫;做丈夫的要

愛你們的妻子,家庭才能獲得幸福。

Wives and husbands

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the lord. Husbands love your wives, then family can get happiness.

疼愛兒子

不忍用杖打兒子的,是恨惡他;

疼愛兒子的,隨時管教他。

Love the son

He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him

管教兒子

趁有指望時,管教你的兒子,你的心不可

任它死亡。

Discipline the son

Discipline your son, for in that there is hope, do not be a willing party to his death.

財物屬性

不勞而獲之財,必然消耗,

勤勞積蓄之財,必見增加。

Character of wealth

Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.

錢財

你豈要注視在虛無的錢財上,因錢財有日必

長翅膀,如鷹向天飛去。

Wealth

Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings someday and fly off to the sky like on eagle.

虛談與是非

要避開世俗的虛談與是非,因這種人放任他

們的習氣,也必成為更不虔誠的地步。

Godless chatter and dispute

Avoid godless chatter and dispute, because those who indulge in i t will become more and more ungodly.

荒唐的人

勿為言語爭論,是毫無益處的,只會墮落為更

荒唐的人。

Absurd person

Warn them before god against quarreling about words’ it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.

真情與忠誠

當面的責備,強如隱藏的真情,

好友給的傷痕,是出自於忠誠,

仇敵多次親嘴,卻是多餘的。

True love and loyalty

Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses are excess.

自欺

不要自欺,三寶是欺不得的,人種何因就

得何果。

Deceived oneself

Do not be deceived oneself. Triratna cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows triad.

聖者的態度

佛看待事情的態度與凡夫不同,凡夫只看外

在表面,佛是看內在。

The attitude of saint

The Buddha does not look at things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Buddha looks at the heart.

真正的福報

有福報的人,不學惡人的計謀,不走罪人

的道路,不坐褻慢人的旁邊。

惟喜愛佛的戒律,晝夜思維,此為是有福報。

The real blessedness

Blessed is the man who does not learn the counsel of the wicked or walk in the way of sinners or sit beside the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the precept of the Buddha, and on his precept he meditates day and night.

三心對治三相

用慈悲之心對人對事,就可除障;

將一切眾生容納於心,就可超脫;

以數息觀心對治痛苦,就可滅除。

Three minds vs. three aspects

Hindrances can be removed by treating people and things with compassion.Transcendence can be reached with a generous heart for all beings.Suffering can be eliminated by breath counting and observing the mind.

利人即先利己

能先斷除他人之煩惱,即可斷除自己之煩惱;

能先利益他人者,即可利益自己,成就自

己的功德。

Benefiting other people is benefiting

oneself first

We can eliminate our afflictions by eliminating other people’s first.We can benefit ourselves and achieve merits by benefiting other people first.

心靈的修行者

一個純正的心靈修行者,意函著對自己的

言行有極大的要求約束,同時對他人要極

度的慈悲與容忍。

A spiritual practitioner

A real spiritual practit ioner refers to one who is strict with oneself in words and deeds, while extremely lenient towards others with compassion and tolerance.

愛欲

愛欲是凡夫眾生的輪迴生死根本,

是三界六道眾生的煩惱毒藥。

Desire

正信的佛教徒

真正要成為一個正信的佛教徒,就必須皈

依佛陀,但不要將佛當做一個神或上帝般

應將佛當做一位證悟的導師,皈依佛的教

導及佛法,而不是皈依教條,因佛法是一

條真理。

A real Buddhist

To become a real Buddhist, you must take refugee in the Buddha, but never regard the Buddha as the deity or the God.You should consider that a Buddha is an enlightened teacher, you are taking refugee in the Buddha’s teachings and Buddha Dharma rather than the dogma because Buddhism is the truth.

領導者的三才五德

領導者,須具備三種才能:

一、創造力;二、溝通力;三、協調力。

領導者,須具備五種德行的特質:

一、領導者是有勇氣的;

二、領導者是謙遜的;

三、領導者是服務他人的;

四、領導者是有熱情的;

五、領導者是正直的。

Three abilities and five virtues as a

leader

現在的佛教徒

參加誦經法會的目的

參加誦經法會的目的應要發露懺悔心,

讀誦經文、了解經義、依教奉行,

時時反省、懺悔、自修、自省,

方能開顯智慧、改造命運、成就功德;

假使只知誦經,口誦而心不惟,

只懺而不悔,只悔而不改,

則於事無補,業障難消,生死難了。

The purpose of attending Dharma

assembly

The purpose of attending Dharma assembly is to repent our past sins, recite the sutras and understand the meaning of them, and then pract ice them according to Buddhas’ teaching.One should introspect all the time, repent of his bad karma, and cultivate by himself so that he can be enlightened, change his destiny, and create his merit and virtue.It is of no use only knowing one’s faults but not improving them.And it will be difficult to eliminate one’s karma or terminate the cycle of his birth and death.

出家的生命價值

出家學佛,弘揚佛法,度化眾生,解脫眾

生種種痛苦,生命才能綻放更大光茫,生命

價值才能無限擴大。

Buddhist Monastics’ value of life

The life can be brighter and the value of life can be infinite by renouncing the worldly life to learn Buddhism, spread Buddha Dharma, save all sentient beings, and liberate all beings from suffering.

正負面語言

講正面的語言,心地就會光明;

講負面的語言,心地就會醜惡。

Positive and negative words

Positive words can cause a pure mind.Negative words can cause an ugly mind.

無知的優越感情結

無知的優越感,會令人變得無能,更不懂

謙卑為何物,待人處事缺乏彈性,卻增加了

無限的傲慢與無知。

Ignorant superiority complex

Ignoran t super io r i ty complex makes peop le incompetent; lack modesty; Get along with people and deal with matters inflexibly; Then they will puff up with infinite pride and ignorance.

無常性

無常充滿無限的可變性、無限的可能性、

無限的塑造性。唯有護持正法,方使佛法

不變質,正法永存世間。

Impermanence

I m p e r m a n e n c e i s f u l l o f i m m e a s u r a b l e changeability, possibility, and plasticity.Upholding the orthodox doctrine is the only way to prevent Buddha Dharma from distortion and keep it in the world everlastingly.

師父是誰

末法時代依人不依法之情形嚴重,一旦所依

師父往生,或受師父責罵、侮辱、冤枉,就

起顛倒而離開道場;

或破戒、還俗;或不依道場修行護持。

則行多不如法;言多不及義,終墮惡道輪

迴受苦。

Who is the master?

In the Dharma-ending age, the circumstances of relying upon men but the dharma are serious.Once the master one depends on passes away; or being scolded, insulted, or wronged by one’s master; the disciple will leave the monastery out of delusion, break the commandments, return to lay life, or not cultivate at or support a way place.Then he will not act according to the Law and will talk frivolously, and finally fall into the lower destinies suffering the endless pain of birth and death.

人心與豬心

現在人的民主道德素養墮落,可謂人心不

如豬心,

豬心一個500元,醜惡的人心,一毛不值。

Human heart and pig heart

As the moral deterioration among modern people,Human heart is inferior to pig heart.A pig heart is worth NT$500; Ill-favored human heart is worthless.

學佛淨化

學佛就是要淨化人格與習性,

成為高尚的人格與正知正見者,

Advice

If you don’t abandon your bad habits today, you won’t do it tomorrow.If you don’t give alms to sentient beings today, you won’t do it tomorrow.If you are not zealous to cultivate yourself today, you won’t be tomorrow.You can not be stingy today, dissociable tomorrow, lazy the day after tomorrow, and slovenly three days later.Otherwise how can you be reborn in the Western Pure Land by being mindful of the Buddha?Or if you could be reborn in there, it would become an impure land.

成功的三才

天之性屬才華,地之性屬謙虛,人之性屬

人緣。

人要擁有天地人三才,才華加上謙虛人

緣,做人做事才會成功。

Three elements of success

The nature of heaven is the talent; the nature of earth is the modest; the nature of man is the good relations with others.To be successful at getting along with people and work, we need three elements--heaven, earth and man--plus modest and good relations with others.

四聖道

病謂「苦」;由謂「集」;脫謂「滅」;藥

謂「道」。

The four axioms or noble truths

Sickness is the pain; Causes are the origination (or the aggregation of suffering); Liberation is the extinction of suffering (or nirvana); Medicine is the dogma of the path leading to the extinction of passion.

真正的慈悲

所謂真正的慈悲,

是與悲傷的人同悲,與喜樂的人同樂。

是與眾生共同受苦,而在苦中去救贖眾生;

是與眾生共同享樂,而在享樂中去度眾生;

更是超越拔苦與樂之究竟慈悲。

True compassion

True compassion is:Feeling sorrow with sad people, and feeling joy with delighted people.Suffering with all living beings, and saving them amidst suffering.Enjoying pleasure with all living beings, and saving them amidst enjoying it.By doing so, it will be the true compassion that transcend just saving them from suffering and giving them joy.

般若

願薄弱煩惱,方能精進;

願增長善力,方能修禪;

願聞慧修禪,方能般若。

Prajna

Wishing to reduce worries, so as to be zealous.Wishing to increase the power of goodness, so as to practice meditation.Wishing to obta in wisdom f rom hear ing and practice meditation, so as to gain insight into all truths.

傲慢者的臉孔

成功者的驕傲,如同魔鬼猙獰的臉孔;

失敗者的傲慢,如同酒鬼扭曲的臉孔。

Arrogant people’s face

Pride of a successful person is l ike a demon’s ferocious face.Arrogance of a failure is like a drunk’s twisted face.

戒定慧

擁有戒律,不造諸惡;

擁有定力,不起妄想;

擁有智慧,不生惡念。

因戒,心得清淨;

因定,心得安住;

因慧,心得觀照。

Discipline, meditation, and wisdom

學佛救民族

世界是一部充滿鬥爭、暴力、弄權的歷

史,所教示大眾的無非是:

要擁有武力才握有權利;要無情無義才擁

有名利;要鬥爭分化才能鞏固勢力。

呈現給後代的子孫都是最負面示範,身為

中國人惟有學佛修行,方能導正思想行為。

Saving people by learning Buddha’s

teachings

The world is a history of conflicts, violence, and usurping power for personal motives. it shows us that:You don’t have rights unless you have armed might;You don’t have fame and wealth unless you are ruthless.You cannot consolidate your power unless you are good at fight and disunity.They are the most negative examples for the future generations.Being Chinese, our thought and conduct can be corrected only by learning and practicing Buddha’s teachings.

教育自己

一個人能先與自己溝通,才能與別人溝通;

一個人能先教育好自己,才能去教育別人。

Educating oneself

One must be able to communicate with oneself before communicating with others.One must educate oneself before educating others.

人這種動物

人一旦擁有權力,易使人腐化;

人一旦擁有財富,易使人墮落;

人一旦擁有名望,易使人迷失。

Human being

One possess power tends to corrupt;One possess wealth tends to degenerate;One possess fame tends to lose one’s way.

三毒的心理反射

貪是來自佔有與支配的心理反射行為;

瞋是來自不滿與歧視的心理反射行為;

癡是來自無知與固執的心理反射行為;

慢是來自優越感與自卑的心理反射行為;

偏見是來自愚癡與我慢的心理反射行為。

Mental reflections of the three poisons

Greed is the mental reflection of possession and control.Anger is the mental reflection of dissatisfaction and discrimination.Ignorance is the mental reflection of stupidity and obstinacy.Arrogance is the mental reflection of the sense of superiority and inferiority.Prejudice is the mental reflection of foolishness and egotism.

舌頭

柔和的舌頭,能折斷骨頭的。

The tongue

心理的需求

死亡的感覺

死亡是人生最痛苦、難過、執著、辛酸、恐

怖、難捨、煩惱、痛恨、遺憾、無奈的時候。

了悟死亡真相,該放當放,該作當作,修

持五戒、六度波羅蜜、八正道、十善業,

業障可消,心則清淨,遠離顛倒、恐怖、

妄想,執著,不畏懼死亡,一心念佛,

清淨明了,直往西方,蓮花化生,永享極

樂,不墮輪迴。

The feeling of death

凡人有八苦二十難,欲離苦得樂,需自我

All these ways are related to the heart. Those who use their hearts are great. It is important for people to pursue their career. However, it is more important to have a happy heart than a successful career. It is even better to be healthy physically and mentally than have a happy heart.

的結果,能看清自我不真實的存在,更不

善與惡、是與非的概念,並非絕對的概

「觀想」是對人事物種種現象和心靈最深

處的本性作一個最深入的探索思惟、掃瞄

無知不屬佛性,卻是障住了佛性,眾生因

Ignorance is not a part of Buddha’s nature but it blocks such nature. 行善的義務

當別人痛苦時,我們救度他;我們痛苦

時,別人救度我們,這是發揮同胞之愛,

相互關照。不要認為自己做了善事,便是

發心,否則,便成為執著有相,心便不自

覺知能力

佛教認為人具有覺知能力,但因人對財色

名利、親情種種的執著,而心中生起貪

著、瞋恨、癡迷、我慢、邪見等五種根本

煩惱念頭,使得原本清淨心性覆蓋上一層

厚厚污垢,不見光明。因此必須拋棄五種

煩惱羈絆,心中方能祥和清淨。

In order to reach the road of total recognition, it is necessary to have the heart of leaving something behind and the hear t of bodhi . Moreover, i t is essential to keep practicing the six virtues, almsgiving, be patient, tolerate, be progressive, reach the Zen state, be wise, etc. After long-term refining of one’s heart and controlling one’s personality, it is possible for us to recognize, f rom “clar ifying one’s heart” to reach “total recognition”, accomplishing the Buddha’s state of Nirvana – “supreme benignity and recognition”.

念佛法門

佛於《大集經》清楚的開示:「末法時

代,億億人修行,罕一人得道;唯有念

佛 , 方 能 得 度 生 死 輪 迴 , 到 達 涅 槃 彼

岸。」

末法修行,唯有念佛,方能得道開悟,修

任何法門,都不可能開悟成就的,此為佛

說的。為何眾生還要學修比佛陀沒有智慧

德行者所說的法門呢?真是無明至極!

學佛之後

學佛前,貪心吝嗇、脾氣暴躁、愚癡無

明、我慢 高、驕傲固執、邪見偏見、自

私自利、好食魚肉、喜佔便宜、好講是

非、惡言妄語、抽煙喝酒、懈怠懶散、喜

好計較等等種種惡習;皈依學佛後,都得

戒除,改過向善,若不能改變過去種種惡

習,則枉費學佛。

After practicing Buddhism

Before practicing Buddhism, we may have many bad habits or demerits, such as being greedy and stingy, hot tempered and angry, stupid and ignorant, proud and arrogant, biased and prejudiced, selfish and self-interest, preference to eat fish and meat, love to take advantages from other people, love to gossip, self-aggrandizing, smoking and drinking, lazy and undisciplined, love to dispute, etc. After converting to Buddhism, we have to get rid of these bad habits. Therefore, practicing Buddhism will lead us to a bright way and increase our wisdom. If one has converted to Buddhism without changing the bad habits in the past, then, it is a waste to believe in Buddhism.

人人皆能成佛

佛說,凡人原本都佛一樣,具有佛一般大

智慧、大覺悟本性,但皆因執著妄想太

多,而不能修得如佛般的智慧,覺悟圓滿

的佛性。人人只要生生世世好好修行皆能

成佛,超脫一切煩惱執著,而永生不墮輪

迴,這比任何宗教所言:「人人不可能修

道而成上帝」的說法,更是超越偉大。

All human can become a Buddha

The Buddha says that every human possesses the great wisdom of knowing; however, because of excess obsession, we cannot refine our wisdom and acquire epiphany like the Buddha for a perfect Buddhist nature. In other words, all humans can transcend all trouble by practicing Buddhism in each l ife and then become a Buddha, to reach eternal l i fe without get t ing into the wheel of fortune. It is even greater than some religious beliefs that not everybody can become god because of religious practice.

要成為一國明君,一位英明的領導人必知十最:

一、最要忌諱的人士是「小人」。

二、最要接近的人士是「諫士」。

三、最須防範的言語是「諂言」。

四、最要接納的言語是「忠言」。

五、最要堅持的態度是「謙卑」。

六、最須修養的行為是「誠信」。

七、最須努力的功課是「多聞」。

八、最須避諱的事情是「特權」。

九、最須關注的民心是「公平」。

十、最須處事的態度是「正直」。

少造業,

則我們布施行善之福德,才能圓滿無漏;
