O God, whose nature is ever to show mercy and forbearance, we humbly entreat thee for the soul of thy servant Name, who at thy bidding has today departed from this world. Do not deliver her into the enemy’s hands, or put her out of mind for ever, but bid thy holy angels welcome her and lead her home to paradise. Let her not undergo the pains of hell, for she put her hope and trust in thee, but establish her in that bliss which knows no ending: through our Lord.

The EpistleI Thess. IV. 13 - 18

Itaque consolamini invicem in verbis istis.

Brethren: make no mistake about those who have gone to their rest; you are not to lament over them, as the rest of the world does, with no hope to live by. We believe, after all, that Jesus underwent death and rose again; just so, when Jesus comes back, God will bring back those who have found rest through him. This we can tell you as a message from the Lord himself; those of us who are still left alive to greet the Lord’s coming shall not reach the goal before those who have gone to their res. No, the Lord himself will come down from heaven to summon us, with an archangel crying aloud and the trumpet of God sounding; and first of all the dead will rise up, those who died in Christ. Only after that shall we, who are still left alive, be taken up into the clouds, be swept away to meet Christ in the air, and they will bear us company. And so we shall be with the Lord for ever. Tell one another this for your consolation.

Life and death will stand confounded, Seeing man, of clay compounded, Rise to hear his doom propounded.

Open then, with all recorded, Lies the book, from whence awarded Doom shall pass, with deed accorded.

Then the Judge will sit, revealing Every hidden thought and feeling, Unto each requital dealing.

What shall wretched I be crying, To what friend for succour flying, When the just in fear are sighing?

It is indeed just and fitting, right, and for our lasting good, that we should always and everywhere give thanks to Thee, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. In Him there has dawned for us the hope of a blessed resurrection, heartening with a promise of immortality to come those of us who are saddened by the certainty of dying.

Memento, Domine, famulorum famularumque tuarum N . . . et N . .

Be mindful, O Lord, of Thy servants and handmaids N . . . and N . . . and of all here present, whose faith and devotion are known to Thee, for whom we offer, or who offer up to Thee, this Sacrifice of praise for themselves, their families and friends, and all those dear to them, for the redemption of their souls and the hope of their safety and salvation: who now pay their vows to Thee, the everlasting, living and true God.

Amen.

We beseech Thee, O Lord, graciously to accept this oblation of our service and that of Thy whole household. Dispose our days in Thy peace, and command that we be rescued from eternal damnation and numbered in the flock of Thine elect. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quam oblationem tu, Deus, in omnibus, quaesumus, benedictam, adscriptam, ratam, rationabilem, acceptabilemque facere digneris: ut nobis Corpus, et Sanguis fiat dilectissimi Filii tui Domini nostri Jesu Christi.

Humbly we pray Thee, O God, be pleased to make this same offering wholly blessed, to consecrate it and approve it, making it worthy and acceptable, so that it may become for us the Body and Blood of Thy dearly-beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

For this is the Chalice of My Blood, of the new and eternal testament:the Mystery of Faith: which shall be shed for you and for many unto the remission of sins.

Wherefore, O Lord, we, Thy servants, and with us all Thy holy people, calling to mind the blessed Passion of this same Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, and also His Resurrection from the grave, and His glorious Ascension into heaven, do offer unto Thy most sovereign Majesty out of the gifts Thou hast bestowed upon us, a

dignatus es munera pueri tui justi Abel, et sacrificium Patriarchae nostri Abrahae: et quod tibi obtulit summus sacerdos tuus Melchisedech, sanctum sacrificium, immaculatam hostiam .

Thou didst accept the offerings of Thy just servant Abel, and the sacrifice of our Patriarch Abraham, and that which Thy high priest Melchisedech offered up to Thee, a holy Sacrifice, an immaculate Victim.

Supplices te rogamus, omnipotens Deus, jube haec perferri per manus sancti Angeli tui in sublime altare tuum, in conspectu divinae majestatis tuae: ut quotquot ex hac altaris participatione sacrosanctum Filii tui, Corpus, et Sanguinem sumpserimus, omni benedictione caelesti et gratia repleamur. We humbly beseech Thee, almighty God, to command that these our offerings be carried by the hands of Thy holy Angel to Thine Altar on high, in the sight of Thy divine Majesty, so that those of us who shall receive the most sacred Body and Blood of Thy Son by partaking thereof from this Altar may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing: Through the same Christ our Lord. Be mindful, also, O Lord, of Thy servants and handmaids N . . . and N . . ., who are gone before us with the sign of faith and who sleep the sleep of peace. To these, O Lord, and to all who rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light and peace. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Nobis quoque peccatoribus famulis tuis, de multitudine miserationum tuarum sperantibus, partem aliquam, et societatem donare digneris, cum tuis sanctis Apostolis et Martyribus: cum Joanne, Stephano, Matthia, Barnaba, Ignatio, Alexandro, Marcellino, Petro, Felicitate, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnete, Caecilia, Anastasia, et omnibus Sanctis tuis intra quorum nos consortium, non aestimator meriti, sed veniae, quaesumus, largitor admitte. Per Christum Dominum nostrum.

To us also Thy sinful servants, who put our trust in the multitude of Thy mercies, vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with Thy holy Apostles and Martyrs: with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and all Thy Saints. Into their company we beseech Thee admit us, not considering our merits, but freely pardoning our offenses. Through Christ our Lord.

Per quem haec omnia, Domine, semper bona creas, sanctificas, vivificas, benedicis, et praestas nobis.

The Absolution

Non intres in judicium cum servo tuo, Domine, quia nullus apud te justificabitur homo, nisi per te omnium peccatorum ei tribuatur remissio. Non ergo eum, quaesumus, tua judicialis sententia premat, quem tibi vera supplicatio fidei christianae commendat: sed gratia tua illi succurrente mereatur evadere judicium ultionis, qui dum viveret, insignitus est signaculo sanctae Trinitatis. Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Enter not into judgment with Thy servant, O Lord; for in Thy sight shall no man be justified, save Thou grant him remission of all his sins. Therefore let not, we beseech Thee, the sentence Thou pronouncest in judgment fall heavily upon one whom the faithful prayer of Thy Christian people commends to Thee, but rather by the help of Thy grace, may (she) be found worthy toescape the judgment of condemnation, who in (her) lifetime was signed with the seal of the holy Trinity. Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

My soul waiteth on His word: my soul hopeth in the Lord.

A custodia matutina usque ad noctem: speret Israel in Domino.

From the morning watch even until the night let Israel hope in the Lord:

Quia apud Dominum misericordia: et copiosa apud eum redemptio.

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plentiful redemption.

And He shall redeem Israel, from all hisiniquities.

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine. Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord.Et lux perpetua luceat eis. And let perpetual light shine upon

them.

The Burial

Deus, cujus miseratione animae fidelium requiescunt, hunc tumulum benedicere dignare, eique Angelum tuum sanctum deputa custodem: et quorum quarumque corpora hic sepeliuntur, animas eorum ab omnibus absolve vinculis delictorum, ut in te semper cum Sanctis tuis sine fine laetentur. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

O God, by whose mercy the souls of the faithful find rest, vouchsafe to bless this grave, and appoint Thy holy angel to guard it; and release the souls of all those whose bodies are buried here from every bond of sin, that in Thee they may rejoice with Thy saints for ever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ego sum(John. 11, 25)

I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me although he be dead, shall live: and every one that liveth, and believeth in Me, shall not die for ever.

The body and the grave are sprinkled with holy water and incensed. The priest then intones the following antiphon:

If the grave has not yet been blessed, the priest recites the

Canticle of Zachary(Luke 1, 68-78)

Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel, quia visitavit et fecit redemptionemplebis suae.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel;because He hath visited and wrought the redemption of His people

Et erexit cornu salutis nobisin domo David pueri sui.

And He hath raised up the horn of salvation to us, in the house of David His servant.

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, who are from the beginning.

Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us.

To work mercy with our fathers; and remember His holy testament.

The oath which He sware to Abraham our father, that He would grant us.

That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve Him without fear.

In sanctitate et justitia coram ipso, omnibus diebus nostris.

In holiness and justice before Him, all our days.

Et tu puer Propheta Altissimi vocaberis: praeibis enim ante faciem Domini parare vias ejus.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways.

Ad dandam scientiam salutis plebi ejus in remissionem peccatorum eorum:

To give the knowledge of salvation to His people, unto the remission of their sins.

Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the orient from on high hath visited us.

To enlighten them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet in the way of peace.

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord.

Et lux perpetua luceat eis. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

Ego sum resurrectio et vita: qui credit in me, etiam si mortuos fuerit, vivet: et omnis qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in aeternum.

I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me although he be dead, shall live: and every one that liveth, and believeth in Me, shall not die for ever.

Oremus Let us pray.

O God, whose nature is ever to show mercy and forbearance, we humbly entreat thee for the soul of thy servant ????, who at thy bidding has today departed from this world.

C.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine.

Lord, grant her eternal rest.

R.

Et lux perpetua luceat ei. And let perpetual light shine upon her.

C.

Requiescat in pace. May she rest in peace.

R.

Amen. Amen.

C.

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

R.

Amen Amen

The King of Love my shepherd is,Whose goodness fails me never;I nothing lack if I am HisAnd He is mine for ever.

Where streams of living water flowMy ransomed soul he leads me,Where fresh and fertile pastures growWith heav’nly food He feeds me.

Perverse and foolish I have strayed,But He in love has sought me,And on His shoulder gently laid,And home rejoicing brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no illWith Thee, dear Lord, beside me;Thy rod and staff my comfort still,Thy cross will ever guide me.

Thou spread’st a banquet in my sight; My head with oil anointingAnd let me taste the sweet delightFrom Thy pure chalice flowing.
