While the Introit and Kyrie are sung, the celebrant, ministers and servers come in procession to the altar. They recite sotta voce the preparatory prayers, Introit

He kisses the Altar in the middle where the relics of the Saints are enclosed saying,

After the celebrant incenses the altar, he makes the Sign of the Cross and reads the Introit (See above), then returns to the middle of the Altar. Joining his hands he says

Deus, cui proprium est misereri semper et parcere, te supplices exoramus pro anima famulae tuae Name ?????, quam hodie de hoc saeculo migrare jussisti: ut non tradas eam in manus inimici neque obliviscaris in finem, sed jubeas eam a sanctis Angelis suscipi, et ad patriam paradisi perduci; ut, quia in te speravit et credidit, non poenas inferni sustineat, sed gaudia aeterna possideat. Per Dominum.

O God, whose nature is ever to show mercy and forbearance, we humbly entreat thee for the soul of thy servant Name, who at thy bidding has today departed from this world. Do not deliver her into the enemy’s hands, or put her out of mind for ever, but bid thy holy angels welcome her and lead her home to paradise. Let her not undergo the pains of hell, for she put her hope and trust in thee, but establish her in that bliss which knows no ending: through our Lord.

Brethren: make no mistake about those who have gone to their rest; you are not to lament over them, as the rest of the world does, with no hope to live by. We believe, after all, that Jesus underwent death and rose again; just so, when Jesus comes back, God will bring back those who have found rest through him. This we can tell you as a message from the Lord himself; those of us who are still left alive to greet the Lord’s coming shall not reach the goal before those who have gone to their res. No, the Lord himself will come down from heaven to summon us, with an archangel crying aloud and the trumpet of God sounding; and first of all the dead will rise up, those who died in Christ. Only after that shall we, who are still left alive, be taken up into the clouds, be swept away to meet Christ in the air, and they will bear us company. And so we shall be with the Lord for ever. Tell one another this for your consolation.

It is indeed just and fitting, right, and for our lasting good, that we should always and everywhere give thanks to Thee, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. In Him there has dawned for us the hope of a blessed resurrection, heartening with a promise of immortality to come those of us who are saddened by the certainty of dying.

Let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.

Si iniquitates observaveris, Domine: Domine, quis sustinebit.

If Thou, Lord, shouldst mark our iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

Quia apud te propitiatio: et propter legem tuam sustinui te, Domine.

But there is forgiveness with Thee: because of Thy law I wait for Thee, O Lord.

Sustinuit anima mea in verbo ejus: speravit anima mea in Domino.

My soul waiteth on His word: my soul hopeth in the Lord.

A custodia matutina usque ad noctem: speret Israel in Domino.

From the morning watch even until the night let Israel hope in the Lord:

Quia apud Dominum misericordia: et copiosa apud eum redemptio.

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plentiful redemption.

Et ipse redimet Israel, ex omnibus iniquitatibus ejus.

And He shall redeem Israel, from all hisiniquities.

The Burial

Deus, cujus miseratione animae fidelium requiescunt, hunc tumulum benedicere dignare, eique Angelum tuum sanctum deputa custodem: et quorum quarumque corpora hic sepeliuntur, animas eorum ab omnibus absolve vinculis delictorum, ut in te semper cum Sanctis tuis sine fine laetentur. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

O God, by whose mercy the souls of the faithful find rest, vouchsafe to bless this grave, and appoint Thy holy angel to guard it; and release the souls of all those whose bodies are buried here from every bond of sin, that in Thee they may rejoice with Thy saints for ever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The body and the grave are sprinkled with holy water and incensed. The priest then intones the following antiphon:

To work mercy with our fathers; and remember His holy testament.

The oath which He sware to Abraham our father, that He would grant us.

Ut sine timore, de manu inimicorum nostrorum liberati, serviamus illi:

That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve Him without fear.

In sanctitate et justitia coram ipso, omnibus diebus nostris.

In holiness and justice before Him, all our days.

Et tu puer Propheta Altissimi vocaberis: praeibis enim ante faciem Domini parare vias ejus.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways.

Ad dandam scientiam salutis plebi ejus in remissionem peccatorum eorum:

To give the knowledge of salvation to His people, unto the remission of their sins.

Per viscera misericordiae Dei nostri: in quibus visitavit nos oriens ex alto.

Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the orient from on high hath visited us.

Illuminare his, qui in tenebris et in umbra mortis sedent: ad dirigendos pedes nostros in viam pacis.

To enlighten them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet in the way of peace.

O God, whose nature is ever to show mercy and forbearance, we humbly entreat thee for the soul of thy servant ????, who at thy bidding has today departed from this world. Do not deliver her into the enemy’s hands, or put her out of mind for ever, but bid thy holy angels welcome her and lead her home to paradise. Let her not undergo the pains of hell, for she put her hope and trust in thee, but establish her in that bliss which knows no ending: through our Lord.
