Ukraine`2014

ITE – Regional overview Focus On: Ukraine 2014

The main event of 2014 is the political and economic association of Ukraine with the European Union. Following the creation of a free trade zone, the trade and economic part-nership is expected to grow in more than 30 sectors of the economy, includ-ing agriculture, manufacturing and energy supply.

EUROINTEGRATION

The gradual re–orientation of the geographic priorities of the external trade of Ukraine took place from 2011–2013. Today, the main trad-

ing partners of Ukraine are European countries. The trade turnover between Ukraine and the EU sur-passed the volume of trade with Russia for the first time in 2014, reaching 35% of the total volume of external trade.President of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko signed the economy and trade part of the European Union As-sociation Agreement on the 27th of June 2014. The extension of the trade and economic partnership is expected in more than 30 sectors of the economy, including agriculture, industry, energy supply and the protection of the rights of consumers. According to the results for 2013, the GDP of Ukraine comprised $182.09 billion. Current events have led to a slowdown in the development of the economy in the country, with a forecast of a fall in GDP of around 6% in 2014. However, the Ministry of Econo-my of Ukraine is sure of the quick restoration of the

economy after peace returns to all regions of the country and forecasts 1.5% growth in 2015. Global businesses have been investing into Ukraine for a long time. According to data from the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine the total volume of foreign investment into the economy of the country comprised $58.38 billion, including $44.423 billion from the countries of the European Union. The main sources of investment are Cyprus, Germany, Nether-lands, Russian Federation, Austria, United Kingdom, British Virgin Islands, France, Switzerland and Italy.Today, Ukraine actively imports European mechani-cal machinery, transport, pharmaceuticals, electrical machinery, plastics and polymers, paper and card-board, food and drink products, agricultural machin-ery and other products. The structure of export to the European Union is comprised of ferrous metallurgy, ores, crops, elec-trical machinery, oil seeds and fruits, mineral fuels, wood and wooden products.

The association of Ukraine with the European Union has taken place on 27 June 2014. The EU is the main vector of Ukrainian external trade

from Russia and Asia to Central Europe

INDUSTRY

MACHINE BUILDING

The industrial east of the country is the most economically developed – Donbass (Donetsk, Luhansk), the Dnieper region (Dnipropetrovsk,

Zaporizzhia) and the major cities of Kharkiv, Odessa and Lviv. The key trends are maximum energy effi-ciency and the introduction of European standards.

A large part of the industrial export of Ukraine are ferrous metallurgy, pipe rolling, coke chemistry, chemical and mining industry,

electrical machinery, railway locomotives and sur-face transport, aircraft and other important sectors. AN series planes and Antonov aviation engines, sea and river craft, high powered equipment, cars, trucks buses are well known products of Ukraine.

Military exports are another important part of the income of the state budget. Ukraine is especially proud of its military and aerospace technologies, in-cluding Oplot tanks, MiG and Su fighter planes from Ukrspetsexport, Sapsan Missile complexes and the Motor Sich aviation engines.

Electrical energy is an important industry in the economy of Ukraine. The country contains 4 atomic power stations, a series of hydroelectric

power stations on the Dnieper and Dniester rivers and many thermal power stations. Energy is export-ed from Ukraine to Belarus, Hungary, Slovakia, Rus-sia, Romania and Moldova.

The current trend in the industry is changing from natural gas to other types of fuel, including coal and biofuel (biogas, pellets, wood chips, agricultural and food waste). Equipment for biological fuel power stations has been freed from import duties, includ-ing boilers, cooling towers and steam generators.

The most relevant fields for investors are energy saving and raising the energy efficiency of production in every sector and the modernisation of the food production and processing industry in accordance to European standards for food product safety (HACCP).
