5th Technical Working Group Water and Land

Management (TWG-WLM) - FAO Syria Country Office,

3 August 2017, Damascus – Syria:

The 5th Technical working group for water and land

management meeting was held at Sheraton Damascus Hotel

on Thursday 3/8/2017 by FAO expert Dr. Wael Seif in

collaboration with the General Commission for Scientific

Agricultural Research and the Ministry of Water Resources.

The Administration of Natural Resources Research

presented two papers, the first one about Basic criteria for

irrigation networks designing to achieve the highest

economic efficiency of operation and about the possibility of

using alternative energies to operate irrigation systems in

accordance with the considerations of the need for

agricultural crops. The second paper was a complete

presentation on the ANRR experience with the DEITEX I

and DEITEX II project, which was implemented with the

Japanese International Agency (JICA) for developing the

irrigation and extension technicians in Syria.

Management (TWG-WLM). FAO Syria Country

Office, 23-24 August 2017, Homs – Syria:

The Administration of Natural Resources Research

participated in the technical meeting for drip and spray

irrigation management, which was held by the Food and

Agriculture Organization (FAO) at Saffer Homs Hotel

on 23 and 24 August 2017. The Ministry of Agriculture

and Agrarian Reform (Transformation to Modern

Irrigation Directorate and Energy Directorate), the

Ministry of Water Resources, the General Company for

Water Studies and the Aga Khan Foundation participated

in the workshop.

The Administration Natural Resources Research

presented several papers that included water-soil

relationship, water requirements of crops, irrigation

scheduling, design and operation of irrigation systems,

bio-organic fertilizers and their use within the drip

irrigation system. Some programs related to water

requirements, field capacity and soil moisture indices

were also presented.



Using of Treated Wastewater in Production of Forage

Crops by collaborated with ACSAD 28 September 2017

Under the patronage of Dr. Majedah Mefleh, Director-

General of General Commission for Scientific Agricultural

Research (GCSAR), a workshop was held on "The use of

treated wastewater in production safe fodder crops" at

Lattakia Research Center on 28/9/2017 in collaboration with

the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Drylands

(ACSAD).

Director of Land and Water Use Administration

presented a lecture entitled "ACSAD Experience in the

field of treated water use in the Arab region". Also,

Director of Natural Resources Research Administration

presented a lecture titled "Project Agreement and

Achievements". After that, Eng. Rabaa Alhaek presented

the project results entitled "the effect of treated

wastewater on the accumulation of heavy metals in soil

and plants in Salamihya". Whereas Dr. Samar Hassan

presented the results of the project in Lattakia entitled

“Effect of Treated Wastewater from Al-Ruwaima Plant

on the Production of Triticale and Sesban Crops”. Finally,

Dr. Muhanad Muna presented the results of his research

entitled "Taste and digestion of Triticale straw that

irrigated with treated wastewater by sheep".

The first meeting with the Syrian Red Crescent

Organization in Swaida:

Through the activities of the Administration of Natural

Resources Research in the implementation of international

development projects, a meeting was held at the office of the

Syrian Red Crescent in Suweida. Director of Administration

of Natural Resources Research, Head of the Water

Harvesting Department and representatives of the Syrian

Red Crescent were attend the meeting. During the meeting,

the draft water harvesting project funded by the World Food

Program (WFP) was discussed, the importance of this

project was highlighted by increasing soil moisture,

supplementary irrigation for some crops and fruit trees and

reducing soil erosion. The two sides agreed to present the

draft project to the two administrations in Damascus and

hold a second meeting to develop a memorandum of

understanding between the two parties.

Soil Taxonomy Training Course:

In cooperation with the Land Directorate, Ministry of

Agriculture and Agrarian Reform and Administration

of Natural Resources Research/GCSAR, organized a

training course in the field of "soil taxonomy according

to the American Soil Taxonomy" during the period 17-

21 / 9/2017 at the Scientific Agricultural Research

Center in Lattakia, 11 trainees from different

departments of land in the provinces were attended the

course. The course topics included:

The basics of Soil Taxonomy.

Explanation of six soil orders, sub orders and

soil groups, and how to distinguish between

them according to the development of soil

horizons according to the American soil

taxonomy.

Explanation of Soil Taxonomy form according

to the American system.

A field tour was also organized to a site in

Umm Al-Thiwar area to review some of the

activities previously carried out in the field of

the course.

Water Harvesting Training:

General Commission for Scientific Agricultural

Research (GCSAR) held a training course entitled

"Practical Applications of Water Harvesting Systems

using Server.11 Software" at Lattakia Scientific

Agricultural Research Center from 13/8/2017 to

24/8/2017, with the participation of 16 trainees from

GCSAR and Directorate of Agriculture and Agrarian

Reform - Extension Department.

Training on different techniques of rainwater

harvesting was carried out and a practical statement

was carried out in the fields of the Center on these

techniques by Natural Resource Research

Administration team Eng. Atef Abdel-Al, Eng. Linda

Droubi, and EA. Ahmed Al-Khatib.

Rainwater Harvesting Project:

The Water Harvesting Team of Natural Resources

Research Administration has implemented water

harvesting techniques at the Ain Al-Nesr-Barshin

Hama governorate with the aim of harvesting rainwater

and preventing soil erosion.

The team also carried out water harvesting technique

(contour stone bunds) in the Scientific Agricultural

Research Center in Lattakia in order to harvest the rain

water in the olive field and prevent soil erosion. As

well as, the team established a garden of aromatic

medicinal plants in the Center within the techniques of

water harvesting.

Sustainable Development for Natural Resources

Project:

The project of Sustainable Development of Natural

Resources (Soil and Water) using GIS and remote

sensing in Salameha-Hama was starting through a

meeting at the Arab Center for Studies of Arid Zones

and Dry lands (ACSAD).

The meeting was attended by the Director of the

Natural Resources Research Administration, the

National Coordinator and the Director of the Water

Resources Administration.

The project consists of several components in order to

achieve the sustainable development of the Salameha

area by implementing the following activities:

Well water pumping using solar energy.

Establishment of a Water Users Association.

Implementing rainwater harvest for fruit trees.

Use a conservation agriculture system.

Rehabilitation of degraded pastures.

Use of gray water in irrigation.

Dissemination of biogas technology.

Improved soil properties in degraded agricultural

land.

The possibility of determination of crop coefficients

for certain strategic crops using remote sensing and

GIS:

This team of the project between the General

Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research

(GCSAR)m and General Organization of Remote

Sensing (GORS), and the team has conducted a

working visit to the Tartous Research Center with

the aim of starting work in Tartous as a second

work area for the project.

The following actions were carried out during the

visit:

Field visit to farmers' fields for determine

the best areas planted with citrus, where

the coordinates of the work areas selected

by the team was lifted by the GPS device

and download coordinates on the satellite

image to achieve compatibility and

suitability between them.

Collect soil samples from some sites to

estimate the soil fertility.

Visit Zahid Research Station and choose

one of the fields with an area of 7 dunums.

Suggestion of training course before the

end of the year in GORS, the trainees will

be from Tartous Research Center and

Homs Research Center to train them on the

Erdas program.

Estimation of water consumption of zucchini by

drip irrigation according to different water

treatments (80%, 90%) of field capacity and

comparison with the control

In the Jalin station, Daraa Research Center where the

treatment 90% of field capacity was better than

treatment 80% and control in production plant, it

reached 13.26 tons/ha and the irrigation amounted to

2100 m3/ha less than control and the use efficiency

water was for this treatment (90% of field capacity)

was 6.3 kg/m3.

Research: Harvesting of flood waters and

management of valleys on large waterfalls:

classification of soil erosion degrees by water, and

its relation to topography and agriculture on the

level of Daher Algabal area/Planning database

(Daher Algabal area -Swaida):

Layer maps were developed as databases for Daher

Algabal area within the Western Roman Basin (124

km2) and the Eastern Salalah Basin (247 km2). The

digital elevation model of the studied basins was made,

ranging from 800 to 1800 meters above sea level.

Rainfall precipitation plots were plotted on the basins

through the treatment of rainfall data for a minimum of

ten years for more than 20 climatic stations distributed

in basin areas. It was observed that rain precipitation

ranged from 200 mm in the lowlands to more than 550

mm in the highlands. The coefficient of precipitation

capacity on soil erosion (R factor) was added.

The soil capability to erosion coefficient (K factor) was

derived by drawing a plot of soil distribution in basin,

ranging from 0.19 to 0.42. It also devised a

classification diagram of topographic gradients, or so-

called coefficient of maintenance (P factor) of the

digital height model of basins. They ranged from 0.27

to 0.5.

The coefficient of the length and slope of the slope (LS

factor).

Research: The study of the amount of soils erosion

on the Guilin Basin by using field measurements

and remote sensing:

The map of the suction basin for the Guilin dam was

produced from the digital elevation model of the

mountain back area. The Topographic Scanner took

several points to draw the contour chart of the dam lake

and then determine the dam table.

And determine the size of the maximum storage in

the dam and the volume of storage resulting from

rain for the year 2016-2017. It was found that the

area of the dam lake about 50000m3. The maximum

storage volume at the flood level is 470,000 m3. And

that the volume of water stored in the dam for this

year resulting from precipitation rain for the rainy

season 2016-2017 is estimated at 378.483 m3. The

amount of soils that deposited in the dam lake was

estimated by taking samples from the dam floor. The

deposition thickness was measured in each sample.

The samples were analyzed mechanically and the

organic material was estimated as shown in the table:

Research: the effect of Hydrogel on the productivity

of maize and its tolerant to water stress:

The results showed that the addition of hydrogel

contributed to reserve of soil moisture. The remaining

moisture was 25.9% in the treatment that added 50 g

hydrogel/m2 and 27.1% for the treatment that added

200 g hydrogel/m2 while 23.6% for the control. Adding

of Hydrogel has a significant difference in productivity

in comparison to the control.

The effect of the cover of the slope lands in the

contouring crops of the leguminous on the clay

soil erosion due to runoff with high

precipitation:

Cultivation of leguminous crops on parallel lines

kg/dunum, which was the best way to grow

legume crops on the slopes ranges between 20% -

30%. Where the growth of plants in the treatment

of LSE2, which is the intensive cultivation on lines

parallel to the contour by the same time with the

growth periods, the parameters of the

morphological phases of the plant curves soon to

the curves linear: Y= 11.77 X+ 5.81

The scientific committee in the Administration of

Natural Resources Research headed by the Director

General GCSAR and with the participation of

specialists from the Administration of Crop Research

discussed master plan for Engineer Maha Helebia from

the Latakia Research Center entitled "the effect of

inoculation by nitrogen fixation bacteria and phosphate

solubilizing bacteria on growth and productivity of

maize " on 18 July 2017.

The importance of research is the possibility of

creating a bio inoculum to replace a part of nitrogen or

phosphorous mineral fertilizers, so reducing the cost of

mineral fertilization, which is an economic problem for

farmers, and reducing the environmental pollution

resulting from the use of chemical fertilizers.

Asaad from the Tartous Research Center entitled

"Study and implementation of a machine for peeling

rice in rubber cylinders" and Mohamed Meeus

"entitled" Study and implementation of a machine for

corn kernels " on 10 September 2017. The importance

of two researches are:

Testing and modeling of a corn stripping machine

in order to improve the quality and quantity of

production by reducing the mechanical damage of

seeds.

As a result of the absence of suitable machinery

and equipment for the production of rice in the

final form was the motivation to design a machine

for peeling rice.

The ANRR through its laboratories in the Syrian

governorates, analyzed the soil (without fees for

farmers). The number of samples analyzed was 1766

soil samples, 690 plant samples, 361 fertilizer samples,

and 42 water samples.
