    King of the Beats

    MAN

An adaptation of American literary icon Jack

Kerouac's novel of the same name, BIG SUR

focuses on a moment in Kerouac's life when,

overwhelmed by the success of his opus On the

Road and struggling to battle inner demons, he

seeks respite in three brief sojourns to a cabin

in the small, coastal California town of Big Sur.

Michael Polish's film is at once a poetic meditation

and a love-letter to the work of an author who

    defined the Beat Generation.

After doing a re-make of John Cassevetes' FACES

    (1968), I decided to re-make another American

classic, Dennis Hopper's EASY RIDER (1969). EASY

RIDER interests me in two ways: its portrayal of

60's counterculture unlike FACES which for me

is more about the 50's and its search for place. I

divided the original film into scenes (like I did with

FACES) and then replaced each scene with one

shot filmed at the original location (unlike FACES

where shots were gleaned from the original film

itself.) My EASY RIDER tries to find today's counter-

culture (if one exists) by replacing the 60's music

with music that I listen to today. (James Benning)

    A Trip Through China

    Benjamin Brodsky, the legendary "Chinese

Film King" was brought to the attention of the

Taiwanese in 1994, when a descendent of the

Brodsky introduced A TRIP THROUGH CHINA, a

documentary film made by Brodsky around 1913,

to the Taiwanese cinema academia. However

legendary this Chinese Film King is, his work,

life and contribution to Chinese film history was

    scarcely documented.

Professor Gene-Fon Liao started his quest of

SEARCHING FOR BRODSKY from year 2001, in

order to note down the footmarks of early Chinese

film history. On the encounter of Professor Liao's

work, this film therefore inspired to record his

journey of such quest on visual images include

Hong Kong, Japan, China and the USA. Through

this documentary, we try to trace how Professor

Liao revealed this hidden history and what the

    influence of Brodsky's films is.

    2010

In his fascinating exploration of a triple homicide case

in Conroe, Texas, master filmmaker Werner Herzog

probes the human psyche to explore why people

kill-and why a state kills. In intimate conversations

with those involved, including 28-year-old death row

inmate Michael Perry (scheduled to die within eight

days of appearing on-screen), Herzog achieves what

he describes as "a gaze into the abyss of the human

soul." Herzog's inquiries also extend to the families

of the victims and perpetrators as well as a state

executioner and pastor who've been with death row

prisoners as they've taken their final breaths. As he's

so often done before, Herzog's investigation unveils

layers of humanity, making an enlightening trip out

    of ominous territory.

When two American sisters travel north from

Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, conversations with

THE STATE OF THINGS is a highly personal film

about filmmaking in Europe and America. It is

about a film crew stranded at the most western tip

of Europe. Director Friedrich Munroe, cameraman,

scriptwriter and actors have been abandoned by

their producer. After shooting their last feet of

film, there is nothing left to do but wait. Friedrich

finally sets out for Los Angeles to search for the

missing producer. He finally finds him on Sunset

Boulevard, in his RV, where he is hiding out from

the mafiosi or loan sharks who are after him. The

two have to pay with their lives for their black-

and-white film adventure the following morning.

Friedrich continues to "put up a fight" by "shooting

back" with his Super 8 camera until the moment of

    his death.

Wim Wenders made this fi lm together with

graduates of the University of Television and Film

Munich. It shows the beginnings of cinema in

Berlin where the brothers Skladanowsky built a

projector, the bioscope, at the same time as the

Lumire brothers in France and Edison in America.

Together they invented "moving images" in their

very own, poetic, lovable and rather un-german

way. The film begins a hundred years ago and

ends in the year 1996, with Max Skladanowsky's

daughter Lucie who still remembers her father and

the early days of cinema very well. The film was

mainly shot on an old hand-crank camera from the

1920s. A silent movie in original slapstick style.
