General Basic Guidelines(1) Things are, by default, permissible, unless there is

evidence to the contrary“And He has made subservient to you whatsoever is in the

heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, all, from Himself;” (Quran 45:3)

(2) Prohibition is only with an authentic & clear evidence

• Say: Who has prohibited the embellishment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants and the good provisions? (7:32)

• Say: Tell me what Allah has sent down for you of sustenance, then you make (a part) of it unlawful and (a part) lawful. Say: Has Allah commanded you, or do you forge a lie against Allah? (10:59)

�(3) Do not forbid those who differ

– Ibn Jama’a: There are 8 opinions about singing

– Ibn Hajar Al-Haithamy: There are 11 opinions

– Al-Ghazaly: Forbidding is only in what is known to be prohibited without ijtihad; there is no forbidding in what is differed about

– An-Nawawi: There is no forbidding on what is differed upon because according to one of the two maddhabs: Every mujtahid is correct

– Ibn Rajab: The evil that should be forbidden is what is agreed upon and not what is disagreed upon

�(3) Do not forbid those who differ

– Ibn Taimiya: Preventing is not allowed unless there is a clear text from the book, the sunnah or the unanimity

– Ash-Shawakani: I do not know in the book of Allah or in the sunnah a clear and correct Hadith about prohibition; They are generalities and appearances to be taken into account but not certain evidences.

– Ibn Hajar Al-Haithami: Some forbade listening to singing without detailing. Whoever forbids, is forbidding against 70 truthful ones.

– Al-Harordi: The one who forbids is either ignorant of the sunnah or hard in manners

• Evidence for those whose opinion is the prohibition– “And there are among

people, are those that purchase distracting talk, to mislead (people) from the path of Allah without realizing and they ridicule it. They will have a disgraceful punishment” (31:6)

– “And those who not witness deception, and if they pass by what should be dropped from speech (laghu) they do so with dignity” (25:72).

– “And fool those who you can from them with your voice” (17:64)

people who will make permissible: zinnah, silk, alcohol, and ma’azif (music and entertainment) (Bukhari – mu`alaq)

2.“…a group from my nation (ummah) will spend the night on eating, drinking, entertainment and play and they will get up as monkeys and pigs…” (Ahmed)

3.In this nation will be (the punishment) of sinking (into the earth) and changing (the image of people) and having (a wind or rocks) thrown (at them)” A Muslim man asked, “When will this be?” He said, “If singing slave girls, and music become widespread and (people) drink alcoholic drinks.” (Tirmithi)

4.Ibn Abbas narrates that the prophet (pbuh) said: Allah has prohibited on you the alcoholic drinks, the gambling, the Kuba, which is the drums and he said: every intoxicant is prohibited (Al-Baihaqi)

Cartoons and MoviesEvidence of those who said it is allowed within Islamic guidelines-What is forbidden from “pictures” is what has a shadow )sculpture( unless it is something that is un-glorified like the toys of children.-Cartoons are not complete pictures, but rather new characters with a unique quality.-They are used for the cause of calling people to Islam and teaching character.-They are a community obligation because of the general problem and the love of children for them.

• The Islamic art is permissible to energize the soul, to enjoy our life, and to delight people without impinging on their duties in this life

"Please God! save us! Please don't blame us,

For this is the only life we have; We'll make it up if we were bad."

No one even dared to turn their headJust one slip and you're dead!As the waves were dying,

A child was crying Searching for her mum and dad

A thin dress was all she hadShe held us tight,

We looked far and wideBut nothing there...

There was nothing leftWe all broke down and wept.Then came the morning,

A New Year was bornThe girl had been with us all night

My wife looked down at her and sighed:"O my Darling! It's suddenly dawning,

But just take a look at those eyesShe must be Paradise!"
