Rejoice!

My sisters and brothers, this fourth Sunday of Lent is known as “Laetare Sunday.” It is rather distinctive like the third Sunday of Advent, "Gaudete Sunday." Laetare means rejoice in Latin. It is the first word of the entrance antiphon, "Rejoice, O Jerusalem and come together all you that love her…." Therefore, the theme of our liturgical celebration this weekend is joy. We often use the words joy and happiness interchangeably. However, joy and happiness are not the same thing. Happiness is conditional. It depends on things like good friends, a nice home, pleasant surroundings, good fortune, or a satisfying meal to name a few. But joy, on the other hand, is unconditional. It depends on nothing. Joy can even occur in the midst of unhappiness. After the destruction of Jerusalem, the lament of our psalmist today is eased by singing songs that recall the joy of Jerusalem. So where does true joy come from? It is a gift of God’s Spirit. St. Paul says in his letter to the Galatians that "…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness…" (5:22). Notice how St. Paul places joy second after love. In the second reading from Ephesians today, St. Paul tells us that God, out of His great love, saved us through His grace (2:4-5). And St. John says in the Gospel today that "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). God’s love is the source of our joy. Sometimes during our Lenten journeys, we can overemphasize the human source of love and the human efforts to love. “We” pray and “we” fast and “we” go to Church so that “we” may love God and love our neighbor. However St. John the Evangelist tells us that “We love because God first loved us (1 Jn 4:19). So my sisters and brothers, on this Laetare Sunday, let us rejoice in God’s gracious gift of love. During this time of Lent, let us not make our goal finding ways to make us happy but instead living in the joy that comes out of God’s love for us. Deacon Alex Juguilon, OSC

Regocíjate! Hermanas y Hermanos, este cuarto domingo de Cuaresma se conoce como "Domingo Laetare" Es algo distintivo como el tercer domingo de Adviento, " Doming Gaudete." Laetare significa regocijarse en latín. Es la primera palabra de la antífona de entrada, "regocíjate, oh Jerusalén y reúne todo lo que amas..." Por lo tanto, el tema de nuestras celebraciones litúrgicas este fin de semana es alegría. A menudo utilizamos las palabras gozo y felicidad indistintamente. Sin embargo, la alegría y la felicidad no son lo mismo. La felicidad es condicional. Depende de cosas como buenos amigos, un agradable entorno de hogar, buena fortuna o una rica comida satisfactoria. Pero la alegría, por el contrario, es incondicional. Depende de nada. La alegría incluso puede ocurrir en medio de la infelicidad. Después de la destrucción de Jerusalén, el lamento de nuestro salmista hoy es reconocido por cantar canciones que recuerdan la alegría de Jerusalén. ¿Así que, de donde proviene la verdadera alegría? Es un regalo del espíritu de Dios. San Pablo dice en su carta a los Gálatas que ".. .el fruto del espíritu es amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, bondad, generosidad, fidelidad..." (5:22). nota cómo San Pablo pone a la alegría enseguida, después de amor. En la segunda lectura de Efesios hoy, San Pablo nos dice que Dios, por su gran amor, nos salvó por su gracia (2:4-5). Y San Juan dice en el Evangelio de hoy que "tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que cree en él no perezcan sino que tenga vida eterna" (Jn 3:16). El amor de Dios es la fuente de nuestra alegría. A veces durante nuestro camino cuaresmal, podemos exagerar el origen humano del amor y de los esfuerzos humanos por amor. "Nosotros" Oramos, "Nosotros" Ayunamos, “Nosotros” vamos a la iglesia para que "Nosotros" podemos amar a Dios y amar a nuestro prójimo. Sin embargo, San Juan nos dice que amamos porque Dios nos amó primero (1Jn 4:19). Así que mis hermanas y hermanos, en este Domingo Laetare, regocijémonos en la gracia del regalo que es el amor de Dios . Durante este tiempo de Cuaresma, no hagamos nuestro objetivo encontrar formas para hacernos felices, en cambio vivamos en la alegría que proviene del amor de Dios por nosotros.
