• -My nam~ is Lina Miriam De los Reyes Santos. I live at 821 Martina Compound,

Barangay Ibaba, F. Gomez ~trect, City of Santa Rosa, Laguna. I am 46 years old and s ingle.

Frnm 1980 to I 99 1, I was suffering from migraine, high blood pressure, and Urinary Track Infection ( U rI). An Internist misdiagnosed my medical problem as poor eyesight. In 1991 another Internist discovered that my mine had a lot of protein. He told me to consult a nephro!ogist or kidney specialist. . When I consulted Dr. Marietta de Llma o t'Manila Medical Center, she told me, alter several tests, that my two kidneys are not functioning anymore. Tht~y shrunk and dried up. It was irreversible. That was why she ordered immediate herno<lialysis because my blood was already poisoning me. We k 1okcd for another nephrologist for a second opinion. We found Dr. Claver P. Ramos of rvfakati Medical Center, who was the doctor of President Ferdinand Marcos. Again, after many laboratory tests, tbe result was th~ same. I continued my sessions of dialysis at Makati Med for 7 months. Dr. Ramos told us to immediately look for a donor because d ialysis is more expensive than kidney transplantation. My older sister was tested but she and I were mismatched. My younger brother who, at that time, was working in Saudi Arabia, sent his blood through an officemate. We matched. And so in February 2, 1993, ~ c underwent surgery. Thru the help of Dr. Ramos, the transplant team, consisted of 12 d, >ctors, did not charge us profossional foes. We only paid for the hospital bills.

Tre tra.nsplanted k idney given by my brother lasted for 11 and 1h years. During that time, I was able to work at the Municipal Budget Office because Mr. Camilo Batitis t< ok me in as Computer Operator.

ln 2004, I started Lo have headaches again, UTI, and high blood pressure. The transplant,ed kidney was h0ing rejected by my body. After tests, the result was the same a , what happened to my original 2 kidneys. The kidney donated by my brother shrunk.

Dr. Ramos told us that I would have to undergo hemodialysis again until I find a nother donor. In November 27, 2004, I started my first session of dialysis at Asia Renal C<ln\ Alabang Branch. It was recommen<led by Dr. Ramos because it was cheaper than Maka.ti Med.

My sessions are four hours every Wednesday and Saturday. The fistula (artery and vein positioned just under the skin for easier access) on my left arm is where two lu 1ge needles arc inserted. One was to suck out the blood to pass through blood lines (t ubes) to go through a dialyzcr (filter) in order to clean the blood, removing toxins and 01 her minerals that are too much a body can handle: This is what a good kidney normally does. But since I am suffering from renal failure, I have stopped urinating. Therefore, my body is incapable to clean my blood and to dischaTge extra fluids. The dialysis machine does that for me. The second needle is where my blood passes through to go b,tck to my body. This whole process takes 4 hours.

- ' . . A dialysis patient also suffers from itchiness of the whole body, hypertension or

. hypotension, no appetite, gas pain, dryness of the skin, palpitation, shortness of breath or difficulty of breathing after· a long walk or too much exertion, edema (manas), etc. One of the wor~;t is low hemoglobin. My body is incapable of producing red blood corpuscles. I get tired brushing rriy teeth or even shampooing my hair. That is why I take Jb1~ret (iron supplement) three times a day and Rccormon, an injectable medicine that he lps increase the level of hemoglobin. This costs Pl,300.00 and is injected to me after cv,:ry dialysis.

My family is always looking for money to pay for the next dialysis. All my sii-tcr ' s salary, what is left of it from loans, is used mostly for my expensive medicines, which cost around P l. 5,000 a month. My man-ied brother gives us money if he has extra n Vih because he has 1 kid in college and 2 kids in high school. My mom is 78 and still working. My wish is that sh~ enjoys her retirement and does not worry about where to g1...1. money. She had retired twice in her lifetime; the first time at 65 years old at Philippine Normal University and the 2nd time at 75 at St. Michael's College of Laguna.

Howt·ver, I could not ask her to stop because I could not provide additional cash fo r my dialysis as I am only earning less than PS,000 a month as a casual employee.

To the Honomble Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, I feel lucky that I he.we a job, and it is au honor lo be given another chance to render service despite my rn1~dical problem. Jf you decide that my situation and my request do not deserve your ap proval, I and my fami1) would stil.l feel grateful that you have, at least, given it consideration. But, since we arc, as 1 have written in my letter, in dire need, may I respectfully request that l be given an ITEM in the Plantilla of Personnel of our City G1,vcrnn1ent.

I am confident to say that I am still very productive and can handle much ·more re:~ponsibilities. I have Civil Service Eligibility (Professional) and a Masters Degree in Bl1s iness Administration ~incc I 998.
