08 Before I have come to believe in Jesus, I was a Muslim. When I was young, I attended a normal school but after school, I was forced to attend a religion class especially on weekends. My parents are very religious. As for me, sometimes I followed the religious teachings, sometimes I neglected them. I have to study and read the Quran every single day, but I have never understood it very well, due to the fact that the Quran is in Arabic language. All I did was to just finish the book like most Muslim do. After I graduated from high school from Trang Province of Thailand, I was able to get into a university in Bangkok. It was the first time that I have to leave on my own to the place very far from home.At the time, I was worried because I did not have anyone that I know in Bangkok and I did not know of any places in Bangkok at all.I had to live in the university’s dorm. However, there, I was introduced to a Muslim senior, who also took me to join the Muslim club of the university, and I had known many Muslim friends who were also in the university. I became the member of this Muslim club and came to attend the club’s activities every day, and became closer to other members and friends in the club. At that time, our Muslim club was next to the Christian club. Every day when I did the morning worship, I would hear singing from the Christian club.I felt that the Christians were wasting their time and did nothing at all but sing.I never talked to a Christian, never asked them why all they did was sing, and never felt a need to know about them.Throughout my four years at university, I remained a faithful member of the Muslim club. During my senior year at the university, there was a group of foreigners who came to our university every day. I also had a friend who knew them, and this friend had invited me to join the foreigners’ activities. At that time, I wanted to practice my English, so I joined this activity without knowing that the foreigners are Christians who came to preach about Jesus. At the end of the activity, and American started to tell his life story and how he came to know Jesus – at that point, I realized that they are Christians.I felt deceived and very angry. It was as if they had lured me to listen to nonsense of those Christians. However, on that day, there was an American who invited me to church. Since I was a full-fledged Muslim and was firm in my faith, I accepted the invitation believing no one would be able to persuade me into Christianity. It was the first time in my life to attend church and to listen to Christian teachings. It felt very different from the Muslim teachings. The Christian teachings were filled with love and warmth, unlike our Muslim teachings which were fierce and stressful. After visiting the church I felt guilty and sad and ended up crying out loud because I felt I had committed a crime against my religion. After all, Muslims are forbidden to go to church. At this church, I was given a book about a Muslim woman who had converted to Christianity, called “I Dared to Call Him Father.” At first when I read this book, I felt as if it perfectly reflected my life because I’m a Muslim like the woman described in this book. The daily life of this woman is as same as mine.It was as if my life was described as a part of this book. When I continued reading, I came to phrase that said, “the Christian God is like a father.”This phrase greatly touched my heart due to the fact that I was very close with my father. However, compared to the relationship I have with God, I felt that He is so far away that I could never get to him. In the end, I tried praying, but had not yet believed so it was more like a challenge.
