Priest’s Message Deflect or Reflect?
Within every human person there are two great potentials. On the one hand we have an impres-
sive ability to deny, suppress, or manipulate reality to suit our psycho-social existence at any given
time in an attempt to contain the status quo of our life no matter how miserable at times. On the
other, we possess an almost unlimited capacity for deep reflection, which unleashes growth, crea-
tivity, and miraculous prospects for personal and social evolution. While the former often leads to
psycho-spiritual paralysis, the latter endows us with a nascent potential to blossom as Christ-like
flowers in a world of unfolding beauty.
The mystic Saints of our Tradition fought laboriously upon the battleground of these two forces
within us. They dissected the inner dynamics of human psychology and with profound struggles
discovered remarkable truths about human nature, the treasures of which can be accessed in the
writings of the Desert Fathers and other sources. At the crossroads of our choice to deflect or re-
flect in our lives is the all too common human experience of pain. As simple as it sounds, most peo-
ple will do whatever they can to avoid pain even if that means continuing to live with aspects of life
that create misery. The discomfort and insecurity of authentic reflection, change, and subsequent
personal growth elicit in many of us the ultimate pain, namely fear.
Fear forms the basis of personal stagnation and often finds expression in acts of emotional imma-
turity. The middle aged man for example who lives in dread of the aging process and clings for
dear life to things that make him feel young instead of embracing new phases in life and the re-
newed possibilities they bring, often exacerbates his emotional discomfort by engaging in a lifestyle
that simply does not realistically work for him anymore. The experts in the field, namely the mys-
tic Saints, teach us the importance of authentic reflection, which can only be achieved by stilling
the mind, settling the emotions, and facing the fears. Undoubtedly this effects a certain discomfort
in us, like the times you realise how mistaken you have been about something and it strikes you
like lightening. At this juncture, the wise person sits with discomforting pain, allows its full emo-
tional experience, learns to embrace it as a gift from God and as a key for the evolution of some-
thing more beautiful in us.
It is here that we often find Christ, in the fear and pain of realisation about our life. It is here we
experience repentance as a change of heart, a redirection of our inner being, and as an ecstasy of
all that is pure and beautiful in this world. It is little wonder that even the Ancients among our
ancestors inscribed “Know Yourself” over the temple at Delphi.
As the emotional ravages of daily life assault this journey even among those committed to reflec-
tion and Christian life, it is easy and common to lose ourselves and our way. It is easier to deflect
rather than reflect. For this reason the Church gives us Great Lent every year before we celebrate
the essence of truth and beauty, namely abundant life flowing from the love of God through
Christ’s resurrection.
Great Lent gives us the tools used by the Mystics. We are given the Fast to settle our body and the
physiology of our emotions, a more intense prayer life to focus our mind and nurture our heart,
almsgiving to connect us more concretely to humanity, confession to reflect and experience repen-
tance in dialogue, Holy Communion more regularly to feed our soul. Over the 20 years of my pas-
toral experience I have observed it as a time when many choose to deflect or reflect more intensely.

Εκτροπή ή Προβληματισμός;

Make every effort to attend the Lenten Services
and honour the Fast this year we abstain from
meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, wine and oil on
weekdays.
TRIODION - SUNDAYS IN PREPARATION FOR GREAT LENT
During the three week pre-Lenten season the church prepares us for repentance. She urges us to prepare ourselves
through gradual diet modification and instructing us with themes of humility, judgment, repentance and forgive-
ness. The period is bounded by four Sundays.
1.Publican and the Pharisee (Luke 18:10-14) :This Sunday emphasizes humility as a key attitude for repentance.
The Greek word for repentance is metanoia, which means a change of mind. To repent we must not boast of our
spiritual feats, but humble ourselves like the Publican who longs for a change of mind. We are called to learn this
secret of the inward poverty of the Publican rather than the self-
righteousness of the Pharisee who is convinced of his perfectness and not
open to change because of his pride. There is no prescribed fasting for this
week.
2.Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): This Sunday teaches us about our need
to return from exile. This parable shows us the mercy of the Father who
with open arms receives his son, whose behavior he does not return, but is
joyous of his return home. We are encouraged to examine ourselves in the
period of Lent to purge ourselves of sin and “come home.”The week that
follows is called Meat Week (Kreatini) as it is the last week we are to eat
meat. In the villages of Greece this was the traditional week to slaughter
the family pig and the leftovers were smoked to be eaten after Pascha. The
normal rule of fasting are applied to this week, fast on Wednesday and
Friday. Saturday of this week is the first Saturday of Souls where those
who have fallen asleep in the hope of resurrection and eternal life are re-
membered at a special service “Saturday of the Souls.” Parishioners bring
small dishes of kollyva to the church and submit a list of first names of de-
ceased ones to the priest. We commend to God all those who have departed
before us, who are now awaiting the Last Judgment. This is an expression
of the Churches love. We remember them because we love them.
3.Judgment (Meat-fare) Sun-
day (Matt 25:31-46): This Sunday emphasizes the Last Judgment. We are reminded of our indi-
vidual responsibility for love. We are encouraged not to eat meat this week,
but we can eat eggs, cheese and other dairy products.
4.Forgiveness (Cheese-Fare) Sunday (Matt 6:14-21) This Sunday emphasizes forgiveness and how we must forgive others if God
is to forgive us so we can break the chains of sinful tendency which we in-
herit from the Adam and Eve. This is the last day of preparation as the tra-
ditional Lenten fast begins on the following day where no meat, dairy or
eggs are to be eaten according to the church tradition.
5.Great Lent Begins Great Lent is the period that the Church has in her wisdom set aside for us
to intensify our own spiritual growth through fasting, prayer and worship.
If you follow the Church guidelines on fasting, make time to attend the ser-
vices and intensify your own prayer life, you will be rewarded with a
greater closeness to God.
THE FORTY DAY BLESSING (ΤΟ ΣΑΡΑΝΤΙΣΜΑ)
On February 2 the Orthodox Church celebrates the Presentation in the
Temple of Our Lord Jesus by His Mother, the Theotokos, forty days after His birth. The Old Testament Law re-
quired that a mother and her child had to come to the Temple for a purification ritual forty days after the birth.
The Theotokos, as a virgin mother, had no need of such a service. Nevertheless out of obedience to the Law and
deep humility She and Her Son undergo the ritual and act as a model for Christian mothers and their children.
Following Panagia’s example, then, forty days after a child is born it is an Orthodox Church Tradition that a special
service is to be offered in the Church which emulates the Old Testament custom. The Forty Day Blessing essentially
consists of prayers of joyful thanks for the safe delivery of mother and child. The service blesses the mother who has
been absent from the sacramental life of the Church for forty days and formally presents the newborn child to the
Church family for the first time as the priest carries the infant into the Church. This is an important tradition for
parents to uphold.
GUIDE TO FASTING FOR FEBRUARY 2012
Fasting is an integral and essential part of Orthodox Christian life. There are four major periods of fast-
ing during the year and a number of other days in which we usually abstain from meat, dairy products,
eggs, fish, wine and oil. Every Wednesday and Friday (with some exceptions) is a fasting day. If a feast
day falls on a Wednesday or a Friday the fasting is relaxed as indicated. The Triodion (three-week prepa-
ration for Great Lent) begins on the 5/2/12. No fasting is permitted that week. Meatfare Sunday (19/2/12)
is the last day we consume meat before Pascha. Please consult your spiritual father or a priest to help you
