    ABSTRACT

“ගරෙදට අරණැලක” is a social service campaign organized by the Earth Resources Engineering

Society (ERES) of University of Moratuwa focusing the Thanjanthenna Vidyaalaya, Balangoda in the

Rathnapura district. The program is executed by the undergraduates of the Department of Earth

Resources Engineering under the guidance of the senior lecturers of the department. The funds for the

project is planned to be gathered from the academic staff, the ERE alumni along with other

     benefactors and sponsors.

It is scheduled for two full days and a half. The first two days would be a weekend and the rest of the

program commences on the third day which being a Monday will be a school day so that the program

is limited to a half day session with the participation of the students and their parents.

“ගරෙදට  අරණැලක”  is expected to address several burning issues the school is facing at the

moment. It is also with the hope of creating awareness and motivation among the students of the

Thanjanthenna Vidyalaya about the importance of primary and higher education.

    INTRODUCTION

“ගරෙදට අරණැලක” is a brand new venture undertaken by the students of the Earth Resources

Engineering of University of Moratuwa with the hopes of elevating the standard of the educational

environment in the Thanjenthenna Vidyalaya, a school that belongs to the Balangoda divisional

secretariat area in the Rathnapura district. It is expected to be held in year 2014 as its very first

    session.

The Department of Earth Resources Engineering has a direct link to the Thanjanthenna Vidyalaya

since it kindly extends its fullest support in providing accommodation to all the participants of the

level four Geology field trip that is normally conducted in the Balangoda area every other year. As the

field camp duration naturally extends over a few days their support more or less helps to make this

field camp a success since it is difficult and inconvenient to travel from the university to Balangoda

    each day.

The project “ගරෙදට  අරණැලක  2014”  was conceived by the ERES society as a measure of

showing the due gratitude to this school. Moreover, this relationship with the Thanjanthenna

Vidyalaya will continue for many years to come, and such an act of tribute will help to strengthen it.

Though they do not expect anything in return it is hard to stay blind eye to the hardships and

difficulties the students of this school undergo just as much as any other underprivileged school in Sri

    Lanka.

At the successful completion of the project, the Society of the Department of Earth Resources

Engineering are expecting to provide the Thanjanthenna Vidyalaya with a mini-laboratory, sports

items, and a donation of books to the school library. Further, an awareness and motivational program

is expected to be conducted to the students and their parents about the significance of education in the

present world. The project “ගරෙදට අරණැලක  2014” will help these students to set a clear set

of goals as to where they should head once they step out of the school, while providing them the

necessary physical resources to build themselves a strong educational background to achieve those

    goals.

    ගරෙදට අරණැලක  2014: THE NECESSITY

From the past acquaintances the Department of Earth Resources has had with the Thanjanthenna

Vidyaalaya, it is an established fact that it can be considered as an underprivileged school. Though

there are schools facing more hardships in the district when compared to this, it is evident that the

situation of the school is in a very bad condition today. Being the only school in the said area it is

really important to the people in the village. The school harbors students of three ethnic groups,

    Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims.

The Thanjanthenna Vidyalaya has classes up to 11th grade, to ordinary level. This part of Balangoda

area is quite rural and the poverty resides in most families which struggle to make the two ends meet.

The younger generation strongly lacks the needful persuasion from their parents to educate them

while the children lack the enthusiasm or motivation to move into secondary or tertiary education.

The school dropout numbers seem to have become tenfold in the past few years. The total students

count which totaled to about 500 in a few years back, has now reached down to 175 unfortunately

enough. At this rate there is no doubt that this school would go into extinction in a few years time.

This demise however is not solely the villagers’ fault  and it has not resulted entirely due to their lack

of interest in education. The school itself is not with enough facilities or resources to retain the

enthusiasm of the students. Not only does it have a serious lacking of good teachers, it also lacks

facilities essential to ordinary level classes, for example a mini laboratory. What they have is only a

couple of broken instruments and apparatuses, no chemicals except for a few very old chemical

bottles which do not react with anything at all and a set of broken glassware.

Moreover, there are students who are good at sports and have even competed up to provincial level

competitions. However, the lack of necessary facilities has prevented them from proceeding further

than that, though they are skilled enough to reach the national level. The school library also is not in a

    good condition.

After O/Ls the students qualified for advanced level education have to enter another school in the

nearest town, Balangoda, which is 23 km away from this village. While the majority of this village is

too poverty stricken enough to send their students to high school after their O/Ls, most do not get

enough qualifications to do so in the first place. Even if some students pass, they do not command

enough results to enter a well reputed school.

As a result of all these the current situation of the Thanjanthenna Vidyalaya has become really sad. In

order to put this school on the right track, a strong motivation is essential. The physical resources also

are needed in order to provide them a fair share of an educational environment to learn freely and

    without difficulties.

    ගරෙදට අරණැලක  2014: PROGRAME PROGRESSION

The program is planned to be held for two and half a day, the first two days being a weekend during

which it is expected to perform the basic tasks required to clear and refurnish an area for the

laboratory. The next day is devoted to a session which would give the undergraduates a chance to

interact with the academic staff, the students and their parents.

    Day 1 and 2

These two days being a weekend would leave the school free of students, allowing the undergraduates

to do their task without interruption. The first stage of the program would be clearing a suitable place

for the laboratory. A small room has been selected for the task which is currently used as anequipment storage room. This room will be cleaned and painted. A cupboard to hold glassware and

chemicals, and a sink would be installed.

    Day 3

The program includes an awareness session, a discussion and an entertainment event conducted by the

undergraduates followed with a refreshment item. The sports items and the book donation also will be

handed over to the school at the end of the program.

    Awareness Session

This session would be conducted by a senior lecturer of the Department of Earth Resources

Engineering of the University of Moratuwa with the hopes of motivating, encouraging and

enlightening the students and their parents about the importance of education, higher education and

the opportunities that open up when you step into the world outside. This would be followed by a

speech by an undergraduate who will share his thoughts and experiences as a student and then as a

university undergraduate. This is expected to motivate and persuade the students to put their goals

high and clear, and also to encourage them to work hard despite of all their hardships, to achieve these

    goals.

    Discussion

This is planned to be an interactive session which would let the academic staff of the school, the

students and their parents to share their thoughts and views with the university students. This would

allow the students to clarify any doubts they might have, to put forth their suggestions, doubts or

    ideas.
