I doubted my existence and my existence is something that I could not accept. I hated myself so much that I would love to gust vanish and free from the pain it has given unto me. The only way I could freely present myself and share my feelings was in the form of modified characters, which project a perfect image of mine, not ugly and not silly. A perfect image that everyone will like. Then I have heard a teacher introducing a story book named “You Are Special” written by Max Lucado. The story happened in a small village named Wemickville. In the village, there are a lot of Pinocchio living in it and they were all created by the same creator, all of them were in different heights, sizes and with different appearances and colours. The people in the village gave each other gold star stickers when they think that they did a great job or had very bright vivid colours. Conversely, if they happen to be old and did some stupid things, they would be given a grey dot sticker. Punchinello was the only one who had never received any gold star stickers and he had grey dot stickers all over him. He was very upset and later on, he found that only when he did not care about how people think of him, would the grey dot stickers start to fall. I think Art is a self-discovering and exploring process of oneself. I want to tell others my insights and experience but not with the real me but a character which has a mask on it, a projected image of mine. I hope that I am able to express and share my feelings and experience with others in a comfortable way and find my real self through Art, therefore I start from “Punchinella”.

Punchinella’s Journey --- Finding my existence

Artist's Statement

When I was in primary school, I was isolated by my peers as I could not control my own emotions. I started to develop a self-abased character and have developed a strong hatred towards myself. I questioned myself every single day, thinking of the reasons for my existence and wondering did I really exist in this world.
