このクラスは、異文化理解研究分野の初心者で、日本の文化や社会生活経験が少ない留学生を

対象として日本語日本語日本語日本語で行われます。このクラスは「国際関係論」の講義ではなく、文化的背景や

価値観の異なった人々が交流する場合にどんな問題が起きるか、それはなぜか、そしてそれを

どう克服するかということを学びます。そのため、受講者のみなさんには、クラス活動への日

本語での活発な参加と、異文化体験を積極的に受け入れる学習態度が期待されます。 このクラスでは、まず基礎的な異文化理解研究、異文化コミュニケーションの理論と技能を、

これから始まる日本での生活体験をもとにして学びます。これはあなた方が慣れない環境に適

応し、異文化理解能力を高めるのに役立ちます。 この講座の目的: - 異文化交流上の諸問題に気づき、それを自分の経験と重ね合わせて理解することによって、

その認識を将来的に役立たせる能力を得る。 - 日本文化および学友たちの持つ文化について広く学ぶ。 - 困難な体験にも挑戦し、そこから学ぶ能力を培う。 - 異なった文化環境の中でも快適に生活できるようになる - 異文化理解研究に必要な日本語の語彙、表現と共に、重要な英語の専門用語も学ぶ。 - 他の留学生の異文化理解にも役立つ、独自の異文化体験事例集を作成する。

1. 異文化体験記録: 「ジャーナル」と呼ばれる日誌形式で、クラスでの学習事

項、購読資料などに関連付けて、自分の体験を毎週一項目以上記録する。 2. 学生独自のＣＩＥ(ＯＣＩＥ)作成: 自分の異文化体験に基づいて、「クリテ

ィカル・インシデント」の事例を 2 ～ 3 例作成する（上記ジャーナルを利

用）。最後にその中の一例を寸劇として発表する。寸劇には友人の援助を依

頼すること。 *作成要領、書式は講義中に与えられる

4. 実地見学旅行には、交通費、入場料などの費用がかかる場合がある。経済的

5. 評価配点：出席 ２０%, クラス参加２０%, 異文化体験記録 ２０%, OＣＩＥ

事例作成と寸劇 ２０%, 最終試験 ２０% とする。優れた『異文化コミュニケ

ーションハンドブック』の評価・参考意見など、特に優秀な成果には、最高

5点までのボーナス評価を与える。

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course, given in Japanese, is designed for new international students who are new to this field and not yet familiar at first hand with Japanese culture and society. This course is NOT a lecture on international relations. Rather, we will discuss what happens when people from different ideological and cultural backgrounds interact. The students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and other activities in Japanese and remain open-minded to other cultures and new experiences. In this course, you will learn basic intercultural communication theories and skills using your daily experience in Japan as a backdrop. These exercises will help you adjust to a foreign environment and increase intercultural understanding. You will: - acquire intercultural awareness and integrate your own experience so that you may use

it more positively in the future. - learn about the different cultures represented by your classmates along with the

host(Japanese) culture. - gain the ability to learn from difficult and challenging experiences - feel more comfortable in intercultural situations - learn useful Japanese words, expressions and concepts as well as some English

terminology used in this field - produce original materials on intercultural studies useful for fellow international

Other reading materials will be drawn from various books and journals as well as some intercultural training kits, or revised by the instructor depend on students’ interest and level of Japanese language. They will be provided as handouts or will be available for download from OGU Caddie system.

CLASS ASSIGNMENT

1. Journal Entries : Choose topic(s) you are interested in from class or in the reading materials and write one entry or more per week.

2. Original Critical Incidents : Write 2222 to 3333 Critical Incidents based on your own intercultural experience (using journal entries). Then present one of them as a skit with the assistance of friend(s).

*Formats will be given during the introductory sessions. EXAM POLICY

2. Final examination: To confirm basic knowledge of terminology and concepts of intercultural studies.

ATTENDANCE AND GRADING POLICY

1. Attendance: 5 absences without prior notice will result in an F grade. 2. Two late-comings (more than 20 min.) without prior notice or official

certificate will be considered 1 absence. 3. In case of emergency (a medical problem etc.), notify the instructor via e-mail. 4. Field trip(s) may require some personal expenses such as transportation,

admission ticket(s) depend on the site(s). If you have financial difficulty, consult the instructor in advance.

5. Grade breakdown: Attendance 20%, Participation and contribution to class 20%, Journal Entries 20%, Original Critical Incidents and a skit 20%, Final Examination 20% and up to 5 bonus points for the evaluation of Intercultural Handbook for Study in Japan and other extra work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The aim of this course is to enable students to have a wider point of view to explore matters

in an academic context. This course focuses on various issues that Japanese society

currently has such as changes of Japanese lifestyles, job problems and declining birthrates

and an aging society. Students will read authentic articles from a number of sources and

discuss on each topic. The issues in Japanese language are also discussed comparing with

students’ native tongues.

times, it is considered as one absence.
