PACE AND DEPTH IN MFL LESSONS:

• In languages we have to cover 4 skill areas ie listening, speaking, reading and writing. These skills are built upon each lesson while student knowledge of vocabulary is expanded.

• Work planned is challenging but has to be achievable.

• Learning is monitored throughout the lesson and the teacher checks student understanding at appropriate points in the lesson.

• The teacher has to be flexible – ie ready to decrease the pace if necessary (or increase it!)

• Lessons usually consist of short, relevant activities (to cover the 4 skills) which lends itself to a good pace in the lessons. If students are kept busy there is less time for poor behaviour.

• Students are aware of their current level and the level descriptors, and know what they need to do to achieve the next level. This is referred to in lessons when appropriate.

In order to consolidate the work done in lessons, students either produce a short piece of writing or complete a work sheet, which allows the teacher to check understanding and depth of learning, and to consequently plan for the following lesson.

Students often feel intimidated when speaking a foreign language so it is important that they feel they are in a safe working environment (especially year 7 and low ability students)

Finally, we are not experts!!!!

But if you want to achieve more pace and depth in your lessons:

1 Set more challenging , but achievable, tasks

2 Check students’ understanding during the lesson

3 Plan several shorter tasks which can be timed if appropriate.

4 When most students have finished the task, MOVE ON!

5 Be flexible – be prepared to reduce the pace if most students are looking glazed over!
