PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
Dear Friends, What an exciting start to the 2015-‐‑2016 year for the HLWC! The Kick-‐‑off meeting in October was a huge success with a great turnout! It was fun to see and meet so many new and returning members. A special thank you to Marilyn for publishing the newsletter in an effort to keep everyone informed of HLWC “happenings”! We hope that you will find a committee or group to join! It’s hard to believe that our next general meeting is only 6 weeks away…which means that the holidays are right around the corner. Our December meeting will be at the home of Linda Hauck. We have a great meeting planned…but more about that in the December newsletter. We will be voting on the nominated charities at that meeting, so make sure you send Lynnette Clemmons any suggestions that you have of charitable organizations. How blessed are we to be able to support charities each year! Highland Lakes is beautiful this time of year. Enjoy! Yours in friendship, Fran Stainback, Co-‐‑President _____________________________________________ ACTIVITY LEADERS Community Outreach – Jennifer Lackey Cultural Arts Club – Marilyn Chiaramonte Friendship Tea – Nancy Smith/Sue Friend Lunch Bunch – Jackie Dye InBetweens –Marilyn Chiaramonte Mom’s Express – Susan Pockstaller Mystery Monday Book Club – Lydia Mathis Sassy Senoritas - ????? Cultural activities, usually plays or musicals, but also including symphony and opera, will be offered to members periodically. We usually go to Sunday matinees, and the majority of the performances are offered by Red Mountain Theatre Company, BJCC, or Virginia Samford Theatre. We try to get a group together to take advantage of discounted prices. As the shows become available, we will offer them to members who wish to join us. Often, members continue the fun and go out to dinner afterwards.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH Contact: Jennifer Lackey 205-‐‑67-‐‑8331 X1805; [email protected] The Community Outreach Committee researches charities in the area, receives suggestions of charities from members, and then presents several charities to the members for voting. Four charities are usually selected and a cash donation is presented to each of them. REMINDER: Submit nominations to Lynnette Clemmons by November 10th @ [email protected].
MOM’S EXPRESS Contact: Susan Pockstaller 205-‐‑920-‐‑4970; [email protected] Mom’s Express handles the Storking Service which provides a free meal courtesy of Taziki’s to all new moms. If you are expecting or have just had a baby (or if you know a neighbor who is), contact Susan who will arrange a “stork flight” to pick up and deliver the meal for you. __________________________________________________________ KNITWITS
Knitwits, the brainchild of Patti Eppolito, is technically not one of the activity groups of the HLWC, but they meet monthly on Wednesdays in Highland Lakes and any one from the community, in or outside of HL is invited. This group of compassionate women with incredible skills knit (and schmooze) personal items as well as baby blankets, hats, lap blankets, booties to give to needy causes. So if you enjoy knitting, crocheting, or any other needle craft and would like to get involved with Knitwits, call Patti Eppolito at 205-‐‑995-‐‑5186. We will include them in our calendar as a courtesy. __________________________________________________________
HELPING HANDS If you know of anyone in the Club who has
been ill and may need a cheery note or has suffered a loss in her family and may need a consoling thought, please call our Helping Hands Chairperson, Terry Marlowe. Terry will be happy to send a card to let her know we are thinking of her.
Please verify the address because it’s possible that the listing in the Member Directory may need to be updated. Terry’s phone number is 205-‐‑704-‐‑4111 or 404-‐‑384-‐‑5378 and her email address is [email protected].
IN BETWEENS When: Tuesday, November 3rd, 7:00 p.m. Where: The home of Marilyn Chiaramonte 2020 Bluestone Circle Contact: Marilyn Chiaramonte @ 637-‐‑5356 or [email protected] RSVP: To Marilyn by Friday, October 30th
InBetweens is just that: a meeting that occurs “in between” the dates of the regular HLWC meetings; in other words, on the first Tuesday of every other month. We have either a special program or a presentation of some kind. Meetings are eclectic in nature and can take on any form. November’s meeting will include a presentation by Jill Glassco and Dawn Copeland, author and illustrator respectively of a children’s book set in Highland Lakes. Just in time for the holidays, the book will be signed by the author and illustrator and addressed to a grandchild. The book titles are: Schoolhouse, Secrets of Shiloh, Hoot Owl Hollow, and Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer. If you are interested, additional information is available at: www.wonderfulfamilytorybooks.blogspot.com.
In addition, there will be a demonstration of how to make a low cost attractive Fall table runner without sewing which will be given as a door prize. Several other tips for easy decorating will be presented. We are hoping you can join us and ask that you RSVP so we know how to plan for refreshments. __________________________________________________________BUDDY SYSTEM Do you remember walking into a Women’s Club meeting and not knowing a single person? Just figuring out where to sit was uncomfortable! To help new members transition more easily into the Women’s Club, we have initiated a Buddy System. Secretary, Lynnette Clemmons is coordinating this program, basically matching new members with seasoned volunteers who will meet them at our meetings, welcome them, even offer a ride, and act as resources for them as they become accustomed to the Club.
If you are interested in being a buddy, just let Lynnette know @ [email protected], or 295-‐‑437-‐‑3311, We are excited about this program and know it will help any new member who is feeling a little lost. Thanks to all who have volunteered to be a buddy so far! __________________________________________________________ HELP! We need a leader or a team of leaders to resume where Margie and Bellann left off with SASSY SENORITAS. It’s an eclectic activity where pretty much anything goes…from bunco parties to cookie exchanges to making gift bags of toiletries for female patients in the VA hospital, to just sitting
around and reminiscing. Margie and Bellann moved away and, unless someone or a team of someones will step up to the plate, we will lose this very popular activity. If someone or two or more wants to take on the reins, please let Marilyn know and we’ll work out a plan. EDITOR’S NOTE from Marilyn Since many of you are members of Birmingham newcomers, you may recognize that this newsletter is strangely similar to the Newcomers Newsletter, albeit somewhat shorter. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and since I edit both newsletters, I decided to flatter the Newcomers Club immensely! As the months go by, I hope to add more features to this newsletter, but nothing can be done without your help and input. Speaking of which, you may notice that many of the same names appear again and again, either as officers or activity leaders. We are 84 ladies strong, and growing. It would be wonderful if more of you would take a leadership role and bring new blood and new ideas into the club. In fact, if you have a burning desire to start a new activity group, just let us know.
I want to personally thank one of our brand new residents and new members, Nancy Smith, for stepping up and taking on the leadership of Friendship Tea along with Susan Friend. Nancy’s only been in Highland Lakes three months and already she’s getting involved, because she realizes that’s how she gets to know her neighbors. Kudos, too, to new member Jennifer Lackey who volunteered to chair Community Outreach.
One of the new features we’d like to have is recognizing birthdays each month, so we are going to attempt to compile a list of each member’s birthday so that we can wish you many happy returns at the appropriate time. That may take a while, but we’ll give it a shot.
Another feature called A Glimpse In the Life of…” is designed to help us get to know one another. Each month we will learn something about one of our member’s based on a short autobiography she’ll write for us.
Any and all suggestions will be welcomed. I hope that you will enjoy the newsletter and use the calendar on the last page to remember dates and times of the activities. _______________________________________ Welcome New and Returning Members
We are delighted to welcome the following ladies and hope that you will join us at some or all of our activities: Nancy Benson, Karen Bowden, Rita Brock, Charlotte Brown, Carol Campbell, Donnis Chiarella, Angela Darty, Olivia Dowd, Suzie Raeder Dudchenko, Cheryl Dudek, Jennifer Emer-‐‑ son, Patti Eppolito, Sherri Fauer, Kelly Fullmer, Lori Gronek, Rita Hardy, Theresa Harrison, Roseann Hunnicutt, Pam Little, Sherry Mauer, Lynne Means, Mary Mercer, Janet Parker, Teresa Pfefferkorn, Melissa Sanders, Lynda Smith, Nancy Smith, Tracy Smith, Phyllis Weaver, Debbie White, Page Willingham, Aimee Wright, and Michelle Wurst. __________________________________________________________
