A hallmark of Rotary service has always beenRotarians’ commitment to doing what needstobedone.Andtheparticipationofourentirenetworkofclubs, alongwiththesupportofTRF,has allowed us to commit to our primary andmostambitiousgoal: theglobaleradicationofpolio.
When choosing our service projects, we doour best to work in ways that will have themostpositive, andmostlasting, impact.Buttoensure a better world for many generations, wemustbeginbytakingcareofouryoungestgeneration. This is why, in 2008-09, I will askRotarians everywhere to focus on the mostprecious resource of every community: ourchildren.
Everychilddeservesthechanceatahealthylife.Unfortunately,everyday,some30,000childrenunder the age of five die from preventablecauses like pneumonia, measles, and malariawhilethousandsdieeverydayfromlackofcleanwater.Andmanymorediefromacombinationof factors, in which malnutrition and povertyplaymajorroles.
This is why the RI theme for 2008-09 is Make Dreams Real.Foodandwater,healthcareandschooling,thechanceatalongandfulllife-thisistheunrealizeddreamoftoomanychildren.
The great majority of childhood deaths occurinthedevelopingworld, andthatiswherethe

For the last few years, RI’s emphases are onprojects in health and hunger, water, andliteracy. I plan to keep these three emphasesbuttoasktheentirefamilyofRotarytomakeaspecialefforttofocusonprojectsthatwillmakeadifferenceinthelivesofchildren.Safedrinkingwater,goodnutritionandtheabilitytoreadandwritegivesachildabetterchanceatraisingthenextgenerationinprosperityandhealth.
Rotary is a truly global network of volunteers.Ourstructureallowsustopartnerwithclubsaroundthe world to tackle a goal as ambitious as areductioninthechildmortalityrate-butonlyif we work together. If we take full advantageofourownresources, andthoseavailabletousthroughotherclubsandourRotary
