2019 PAC-12 BASEBALL // PAC-12 CONFERENCE2

PREVIEWING THE WEEK: Pac-12 baseball once again boasts three of the top five ranked teams in the nation in the USA Today Coaches Poll. This is the eighth time in 11 weeks at least three Conference teams have been ranked in the top five. UCLA is the No. 1 team in the nation for the seventh-consecutive week, Stanford is No. 3 and Oregon State is No. 4. The Bruins are also the consensus No. 1 team in the nation for the fourth-straight week. UCLA faces a tough league series this week against another ranked squad, No. 16 Arizona State. Washington and Washington State battle in the historic Apple Cup of baseball, a series that dates to 1901 and will hit 441 all-time meetings this weekend.

No. 1 UCLA and No. 16 ASU looks to be a tight series between one of the strongest defensive units and one of the most productive offenses in the nation. The Bruins are the only team in the country to rank in the top 10 in both ERA (2.62, 1st) and fielding percentage (.981, 5th). Meanwhile, the Sun Devils have the nation’s second-best scoring average (9.0 runs a game) and slugging percentage (0.532), along with the fifth-best batting average (.318). All three games of the weekend series will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.

Washington travels to Washington State for a pivotal conference series, as the Huskies look to boost their potential NCAA resume. Although UW holds a 46-25 record over WSU since 2000, the last 10 games have been closely contested. The Cougars have won six of the last 10 matchups, but in their last meeting on April 29, 2018, the Huskies scored four runs in the ninth inning to steal a win and the series. All three games of the in-state rivalry series will be broadcast on Pac-12 Washington.

WEEKLY RECAP: With a series sweep of Utah and midweek win versus Pepperdine, UCLA improved to 35-7 for its best record through 42 games in program history, besting its previous mark of 31-10 (1979, 2010, 2015). UCLA has been dominant on the weekends, winning all 10 of its weekend series this year, the longest streak by the Bruins since the program won 14 straight over the 2014-15 campaigns. The Bruins are the only team in Division I which has yet to drop a weekend series in 2019. The Bruins’ historic season has not gone unnoticed as it is in its seventh-consecutive week as the No. 1 team in the nation, the longest stretch at No. 1 in program history.

With Oregon State’s series sweep over Washington State last week, the Beavers have now won six-straight Pac-12 series. OSU starting pitcher Grant Gambrell and catcher Adley Rutschman earned recognition from Collegiate Baseball as National Players of the Week for their performances against the Cougs. Gambrell earned the win on Sunday and tied a career-best with 12 strikeouts in a career-long 8 1/3 scoreless innings. Rutschman went 11-for-23 with a home run and seven RBI over five games last week.

GOLDEN SPIKES: Eight Pac-12 student-athletes were named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list, including last year’s winner, Cal’s Andrew Vaughn. He is just one of four Golden Spikes Award recipients all-time to return to school after winning the award. Arizona State’s Hunter Bishop, Alec Marsh and Spencer Torkelson, Washington’s Josh Burgmann and Nick Kahle and Oregon State’s Brandon Eisert and Adley Rutschman also earned the nod. ASU’s three candidates on the midseason watch list is the most of any team in the country. The Pac-12 is home to eight Golden Spikes Award winners after Vaughn claimed the award last season, tying the ACC and SEC for most of any conference. The 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 14, 2019.

IN THE RANKINGS: Four Pac-12 teams are ranked in the top 20 in the latest USA Today Coaches poll, including No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Stanford and No. 4 Oregon State. UCLA is the top-ranked team for the seventh-consecutive week. A Pac-12 squad has claimed the No. 1 ranking in 8-of-10 weeks this season. Arizona State lands at No. 16 this week.

For the fourth-straight week, the Bruins have been named the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation by five national rankings. Additionally, UCLA, Stanford, OSU and ASU rank in the top 25 in all five polls.

Nine of 11 Pac-12 programs rank in the top 100 in the NCAA RPI rankings, including UCLA at No. 1. OSU and Stanford also rank in the top 20, ranking 10th and 16th, respectively. UCLA and Stanford have the top two win percentages against teams within the top 50 in RPI (minimum of 10 games). The Bruins have the best win percentage in the nation (.750, 12-4) and the Cardinal is second-best (.727, 8-3).

BY THE NUMBERS: Conference pitchers have brought the heat this season as three of the top 10 teams with the best national ERAs are Pac-12 squads. UCLA has the best ERA at 2.62, Oregon State’s pitching staff has an ERA of 2.92, good for second-best, and Stanford is seventh at 3.10.

The Conference’s top hitters have found ways to get on base at exceptionally high rates this year. Four student-athletes rank among the nation’s top 30 in on-base percentage, including OSU’s Adley Rutschman with the best OBP (.576). Cal’s Andrew Vaughn has the third-best average at .535, Nick Kahle of Washington ranks sixth at .519 and ASU’s Hunter Bishop is 27th (.498).

Collegiate Baseball’s Projected Player of the Year, OSU’s Adley Rutschman, is living up to the high expectations set for him this season. The junior catcher leads the nation in walks (55), walks per game (1.28) and OBP (.576). He also holds third-best batting average in the country (.431) and fourth-best national slugging percentage (.813), both of which lead the Conference.

STAR POWER: Stanford two-way threat Will Matthiessen earned his second career Pac-12 Baseball Player of the Week honor after leading No. 3 Stanford to a 4-1 week with both his bat and his arm. The junior pitcher/infielder helped keep Stanford at the top of the Pac-12 standings by going 10-for-20 and knocking in at least one RBI in four of his five games. Matthiessen blasted three home runs on the week and tallied a .950 slugging percentage. In addition to going 3-for-5 with three runs and a homer in Saturday’s game, he also started and earned his fourth win of the year on the mound. In 5.0 innings pitched, allowed just two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

UCLA pitcher Ryan Garcia earned his third Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor this season behind a two-hit, complete game shutout against Utah on Friday night. In the effort, Garcia struck out a career-high 14 batters, the most by a Pac-12 pitcher this season and most by a UCLA pitcher since 2011. He also lowered his league-best ERA to 1.10, a mark good enough for fourth lowest in the country. He was also named a National Player of the Week by both Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA.

BIG TIME RELIEF: The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced its midseason Stopper of the Year Award watch list, which includes three Pac-12 relief pitchers, tied for the most of any conference. Stanford’s Jack Little is the only returner among last year’s five finalists and already has eight saves in 16 appearances this year. Joining him on the list is Oregon State junior Jake Mulholland, whose 27 career saves is the most among active NCAA Division I players and his 1.64 career ERA is the best in the nation. UCLA’s Holden Powell also received a nod, as his 13 saves on the year are the third-most in the nation.

PAC-12 BASEBALL COACHES VOTE UCLA AS 2019 FAVORITE

SAN FRANCISCO - In a polling of the Pac-12 baseball coach-es, UCLA has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the Conference title for the 2019 season. This is the third time in program history and the first since 2015 that the Bruins were chosen to win the Pac-12, which was also the last time UCLA clinched the Conference crown.

Led by head coach John Savage, UCLA advanced to the 2018 Minnesota Regional in the NCAA Tournament, notching 38 or more wins for the fifth time in the last eight seasons. The Bru-ins return a strong nucleus of position players including 2018 All-Pac-12 selections in second baseman Chase Strumpf, first baseman Michael Toglia and outfielder Jeremy Ydens. After finishing fourth in the Conference last year, the Bruins have now been ranked inside the top ten in every major national preseason poll released this offseason.

2018 Pac-12 Champion STANFORD was selected to finish second for the third-consecutive year. In head coach David Esquer’s first season at the helm, the Cardinal clinched its first league title since 2004, posted its second-highest winning percentage in program history (.793) and reached the NCAA Regional for the second-consecutive season. A consensus first team All-American, sophomore reliever Jack Little returns to the mound after tying a program record with 16 saves.

Under the direction of first year head coach and longtime associate head coach Pat Bailey, NCAA Champion OREGON STATE was tabbed to finish third. In 11 years with OSU, Bailey helped the pro-gram to the 2018 national championship, three trips to Omaha and nine overall postseason appear-ances. Bailey replaces retired legendary head coach Pat Casey, who led the Beavers to all three of its NCAA titles. The 2018 CWS Most Outstanding Player Adley Rutschman is back behind the plate after setting a school record 102 hits and 83 runs batted in last season.

ARIZONA finished fourth with 67 points and WASHINGTON, a year after reaching the NCAA College World Series for the first time in program history, totaled 56 points to round out the top five.

ARIZONA STATE takes the sixth spot with 59 points and OREGON tallied 49 points for seventh. CALI-FORNIA received 37 points for eighth and USC was tabbed to finish ninth with 32 points. WASHING-TON STATE is 10th with 15 points and UTAH totaled 14 points for 11th.

The 2019 Pac-12 baseball campaign begins Friday, Feb. 15 with all 11 teams competing, featuring Oregon State in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic and California and Stanford competing in the Angels College Classic. Pac-12 Networks will broadcast over 95 baseball games this season, including 18 rivalry matchups as well as a two-game set featuring Oklahoma State at Oregon State May 4-5. For more information, including a full TV schedule, please visit http://www.pac-12.com/.

Ten points are awarded for a first-place vote, nine points for a second-place vote, eight for a third-place vote, etc. First-place votes are in parentheses. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams.
