Inpharma 1395 - 12 Jul 2003 Tailored pharmacokinetic dosing of IV α1-antitrypsin augmentation therapy "markedly reduces" the annual drug cost among patients with α1-antitrypsin deficiency in Sweden, report researchers from that country. They used a computer simulation to change the dosage regimens among five such patients with emphysema who were receiving IV augmentation with human α1-antitrypsin [‘Prolastin’]; the dosage changed from 120 mg/kg every two weeks to 1–2g twice weekly. The new dosage decreased the annual median α1-antitrypsin consumption from 286g to 156g per patient and allowed the treatment to take place at home. Among four patients who went ahead with the new home-based therapy, the annual total drug cost fell by SEK780 000, * a saving of 30%. * Swedish kronor Piitulainen E, et al.
