Lexmark C762

25ppm Color Printer (upgrades to color MFP)

The Lexmark C762 has an advertised first color page out of as littleas 15 seconds and a maximum print speed of 25ppm letter (23ppmA4) in both color and monochrome. The device has a new defaultPrint Quality mode called 4800CQ with Pel Synthesis. This modesimultaneously adjusts dot size and shape while interpolating from1200 x 600 dpi. Standard paper capacity varies from 600 to 3,100sheets, depending on model. Maximum paper supply is 3,100sheets. Banner printing is available via the multi-purpose tray.

Processing power is 600MHz (500MHz on the base Lexmark C762

model). The standard 128MB RAM can be expanded to a maximumof 512MB. A hard drive is also available providing additional jobspooling and processing capabilities. PCL5c,6 and PostScript3printing are included within the entry-level price.

A 3,000 sheet stapler stacker finisher is available as an optionalupgrade item. Maximum paper size supported is legal/folio.

nvestment of the buyer by adding anxtensive upgrade path to the C762, witheatures such as a 3,000 sheet finisher unitor more flexible document productionapabilities and a multifunctional upgrade,onverts the device into a highly featuredetwork scanner, fax and color copier.

For those who do not need the extra upgradeptions Lexmark offers a lower priced C760

model, which provides the similar printingapabilities as the C762 but does not offer the

multifunctional upgrade path.

Design Features:

The Lexmark C762 has a new default PrintQuality mode called 4800CQ with PelSynthesis. This mode simultaneously adjustsot size and shape while interpolating from200 x 600 dpi.

The maximum advertised engine speed is

25ppm (letter) in both color and monochrome(23ppm A4 size). Paper is handled up tolegal/folio in the main trays. Like itspredecessor, most configurations of the C762come with a powerful 600MHz processor (theentry-level Lexmark C762 comes with a 500MHz processor) and equipped with 128MBRAM, expandable to 512MB. An optional harddrive enables capabilities such as Proof ThenPrint and Print On Demand.

The standard paper supply varies from 600sheets (one 500-sheet drawer, plus a 100-

sheet bypass tray) to 3,100 sheets,depending on the configuration. Maximumupgraded paper supply is 3,100 sheets.

The Lexmark C762 comes standard withthree printer languages: PCL5c and 6emulation, PostScript 3 emulation, and PDFv. 1.2-1.3.

The Control Panel:

The Lexmark C762’s control panel is veryimple, consisting of only five buttons, plus atatus light. It features a two-line LEDisplay. The quality of the control panel haseen improved since the previous model withard plastic buttons replacing most of thepongy buttons.

Navigation through the menu system isimple, with users moving through the menuevels using the ‘select’ and ‘return’ buttons.

There is no job reset/cancel job button whichwe would have liked as an instant means of sers being able to cancel incorrect jobs.

The Lexmark C762 is compatible withWindows XP, 2000, 98, 95, Me, NT 4.0 andWindows Server 2003.

nstallation:

t took just 10 minutes to install the LexmarkC762. There was not the usual bewilderingrray of consumable boxes. Packaging wasept to a bare minimum with the consumableslready installed, with only the drum andransfer belt protector wrapping having to beemoved. DHCP is supported so we simplyttached the device to the network for the

DHCP server to assign network settings.Toonnect to the device, we installed the printer river and used Lexmark’s MarkVision

etwork management utility to set up the port.T managers will like the ability to

automatically install the printer driver ontomultiple remote PCs from their desktop asshown in the screenshot below.

The process of setting up a multi-destinationinstallation was simple. The installation wizardallowed us to browse across the network,selecting the PCs we required. After addingthe user ID and password we could store thename within a list for future use.

For example, the entire first floor of an officecould be stored as a single list on the IT

manager’s PC. When the next Lexmarkdevice is installed, you simply load the list

again and the driver isinstalled on every PCin a single process.

Black Only Driver Option:

Within the installationprocess, we could alsochoose to install ablack only driver, rather

than the full color driver. This allows ITmanager to place thedevice into officeswhere color and noncolor authorised userscan share the printer.

Maintenance:

The Lexmark C762 has a maximum monthlyuty cycle of up to 100,000 pages per month,

which is impressive for a color printer in thisector of the market and higher than anyompeting devices offer. The print engineses four color imaging units in a line. Paper

makes a single pass high-speed under themaging units.

The front panel opens completely, providingeasy access to consumable items, as shownopposite. The four color units slide in at thetop of the device, with a toner cartridge andphotoconductor unit which slot together.

The photoconductor and toner cartridge areeach contained in easy-to-change units. Thispreserves the simplicity of all-in-one toner cartridges while still allowing users to fully usetheir consumables, instead of throwing awaya usable photoconductor when the toner needs to be replaced.

To further expand the network scanning/workflow capabilities of the X762e, Lexmarklso offers its Lexmark Document Distributor LDD) version 2.0 which allows users toreate complex workflow tasks under aimplex icon on the touchscreen control panelnd much more.

For two-sided printing, a duplex unit isvailable as an optional upgrade for onfigurations that do not come with ittandard.

An 802.11b Wireless Print Adapter isvailable to enable the Lexmark X762e tounction without being tethered to a cable.However, 802.11g would have been a

welcome addition). A parallel RS-232C portan be connected as well.

Paper supplies can be upgraded with theddition of optional 500-sheet drawers or a,000-sheet drawer. Maximum upgradedaper supply is 3,100 sheets total. Annvelope drawer is also offered.

The Lexmark C762 can be equipped with anptional finisher which provides corner tapling, hole punching (two to four holes),ffset stacking and stacking for up to 3,000heets of unstapled, un-punched media. Thisnisher can staple up to 30 sheets per set.

A five-bin mailbox is available, enabling usersto direct print jobs to different boxes andlessen the possibility of document mix-ups.The mailbox sits on top of the printer mainunit and can be installed in addition to the

finisher unit.

A hard drive is also available, providinggreater document storage and spoolingcapabilities.

Also available are memory upgrades, in16MB Flash, 32MB Flash, 256MB SDRAMand 512MB SDRAM units.

Paper supplies can bencreased to a maximumf 3,100 sheets — aigher upgraded supply than competingevices offer. Users can install up to three00-sheet drawers or the optional 2,000-heet drawer.

Their is no exit restraint built into the paper rawers, which means that users can pull the

rawer out of the device relatively easily. Thisould result in a tray being dropped and beingamaged.

Output:

The standard 250-sheetutput capacity can be

ncreased to a total of 3,900heets by adding the 3,000-heet finisher and the 650-heet Output Expander.

Duplex Unit:

The duplex unit (optional onome configurations) in theexmark C762 is located inhe front of the printer,etween the paper drawer nd the paper tray. This

Cost Control/Job Accounting:

While few dispute the potential benefits of olor - increased information retention,levated professional image, better document

egibility, higher response rates, etc… auestion remains. At what price do I get theseew benefits.

With the explosion of digital camera sales andnternet access now readily available from theesktop, buyers are very conscious of theemptation by staff to print non-business

elated items on office color devices (familyictures, humorous images sent to personalmail accounts, etc.), running up businessosts and nullifying the advantages that color

was supposed to generate.

Until recently, because of their highmonochrome print per page costs, most color evices were purchased as supplementaryems, intended to provide color outputapability while leaving monochrome outputo more cost-effective units around the office.

Nowadays, the issue of how to control color

unning costs is becoming more complex withevices such as the Lexmark C762 beingonsidered as a replacement for existing

monochrome printers in the office.

This now poses a new problem for thebuyer/office administrator. “How do I controlcolor output without interrupting day to daymonochrome usage?” Lexmark offers a selection of solutions toaddress this issue.

All Lexmark devices can be locked, forcingthe user to input a valid ID code before thedevice can be used. Mark Vision Professionalallows the administrator to assign different

access criteria to each user. For example, auser can be given unlimited access tomonochrome printing while being preventedfrom creating color print output.

Because MarkVision Professional is a server-based solution, the user code directory isstored a central location, with devicesbrowsing to the central file to check on theauthenticity of a user. This allowsupdates/new user ID codes to be added tothe list once, in a matter of seconds, rather than having to send the data to each device

individually.

We would have liked the ability to specify aprint limit within the user ID profile.

For environmentsrequiring this extrafunctionality Lexmarkoffers a solutionthrough a third partyalliance with Pharos.

exmark has developed a feature calledColorSaver Mode. When this is turned on,ext prints at a toner darkness setting of four,

while images and graphics print at a lower oner darkness setting of one. Lexmark sayshat this makes color images and graphicsghter, while retaining dark, crisp

monochrome text, and that ColorSaver Modereserves the readability of documents whileaving up to 50% in running costs for color oner on images and graphics, even if text,raphics and images are all printed on theame page.

The Lexmark C762 also has a MonochromePrint Lock which is also set from the controlane, or through MarkVision Professional.

Once set, it prevents the device from printingn color and restricts users to monochromerinting only. This can help reduce color rinting costs and cannot be overridden byny other menu, driver or application setting.

There is also a monochrome-only print driver vailable (see below) which can be given tosers who do not require color printing.

Coverage Estimator:

Lexmark includes a coverage estimator whichcalculates the total amount of each of the four colors based on the electronic print imagedata in the print file.

When switched on each page has a large boxfor each color with its coverage expressed asa percentage.

Lexmark promotes this as a means of estimating costs prior to conducting a print

run, and can be used by pay for printenvironments to deliver a custom-pricedcontract on a user by user basis.

Print image quality on the Lexmark C762 was,or virtually all business purposes good. Color hotographs reproduced well, with flesh tonesvenly applied and natural-looking, but a littleull, even when printed on expensive glossy

media.

Color registration was good, with nooticeable color overlap. Fine monochromene details printed very well, with no traces of olors evident in greyscales.

High resolution Photoshop imageseproduced accurately albeit flat. Usersooking to produce in-house publications maynd the matt appearance less attractive thanome competing units with glossier ppearance. PowerPoint presentationsrinted well, with bright colors and no visibleistortion, which will put the device in goodtead in the general office market wheretandard business presentation/salesocuments will often be the main requirementf the device. Color Controls:

Color controls vary according to which printer driver is being used. The PostScript 3 driver (illustrated below) lets users select from anumber of color options, including the abilityto manually set color contrast, color balanceand color matching. Toner darkness can bemanually set, and ColorSaver (which appliesless color to save money on color draftprints).

Using RGB options, PostScript users can set

images, text and graphics color correctionsindividually or as a set. Using CMYK optionsallows users to set controls for images, textand graphics at once. Options include VividCMYK, Euro CMYK and US CMYK.

The PCL5c driver also allows manual color controls to be set, though RGB images, textand graphics choices are limited to Printer Setting, sRGB Display, sRGB Vivid, Vivid andOff.

Both the PCL and PostScript drivers offer aelection of delivery modes for printing.

Confidential Print: requires users to enter aPIN code at the device in order to print theob.

Verify Print sends a multiple-set print job tohe printer, but prints only the first set. Thisllows users to proofread it before printing theest of the job. This may save on paper and

oner costs, if proofing the first print turns upny errors.

Reserve Print allows users to store print jobsn the device itself, providing in essence arint on demand capability.

Repeat Print recalls jobs that have beenreviously sent and prints them again.

Letterheads/Covers:

Neither print driver gives users the ability toselect to have the first sheet on differentpaper than the rest of the document. Thismay be a limitation in some offices whichoften use letterhead to print the first sheet of adocument.

Overlay:

All of the device’s printer drivers supportoverlay printing. In essence, an overlay is a

standard background that is stored on thedevice and linked to the print file as it arrivesoff the network. Overlays are commonly usedas a replacement for pre-printed forms andletter-headed paper, allowing the user toreduce processing and bandwidth by storingthe common element at the device.

The buyer gets a lot of bang for his buck with

exmark. Lexmark’s message of “More For Less” is seen with the C762 which maintainshe same price as its predecessor but offers 25% jump in engine speed.

Overall, the Lexmark C762 offers goodroductivity, good office color image qualitynd is easy to use. It comes in a wide rangef configurations, allowing users to select onlyhe features they currently need, without

wasting money on bells and whistles.
