The coastal city of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa province, Central

Vietnam, lies on the trans-Vietnam highway, 1,278km from Hanoi,

and 448km from Ho Chi Minh City.

Chong mount which looks like a wide open hand over the sea. Far

offshore, the Yen (a kind of bird) Island appears with lush green

The 7 km white sand beach of Nha Trang is often called Vietnams

Mediterranean Area, considered one of the jewel along Vietnam's long

stretching coast line. Nha Trang is sunny all year round, with an

average temperature of 23C due to northern winds.

almost 10 salangane islands. Annually, the salangane exploitation

bring millions of US$ for the province. Under the bay, there is the

world of 350 kinds of coral, 190 kinds of fishes, seaweed, mollusk,

and so on.

For ages, Nha Trang has been well-known as a tourism land with

many cultural and historical sites like Ponagar Tower, White Buddha,Tu Van Pagoda, A. Yersin site or Nha Trang Institute of

Oceanography (where over 10,000 sea creature samples are kept). The

major attraction is its sea. Nhatrangs tourism, metaphorically named

smokeless industry, has been described to be flying high with its sea

and the green island.At the second conference of the world most beautiful bays club

held in Tadousac (Quebec, Canada) from June 1, to June 8, 2006, Nha

Trang bay was admitted to be the 29th members of the world club, and

The origin of the name

According to some researches, the name Nha Trangderives

from a false Vietnamese spelling of a geographical name in the Cham

language of the site Yjatran orEa Tran, the name of the now Cai

River as referred to by the Cham people). It is said that a long timeago, 2 banks of Cai River emptying into Cu Huan (Cua Lon) seaport

were full of reed, and grass. Therefore, people called it Lau (reed)

River that means Yjatran orEa Tran in Champa language. From the

Long Sn pagoda

name of this river,

the name wasadopted to call what

is now Nha Trang,

which was

officially made

Vietnams territory

in 1653.

Another theory of the origin of Nha Trang's name has a more

amusing twist. Long ago, in this part of the country, all the houses

were made out of the reeds and mud gathered from Ngoc Hoi river.

The only house that was made out of bricks were the house belonging

to Dr. Yersin, a French immunologist who made his home here. The

house itself was painted prominently white and could be seen by

vessels coming from far away. Once there was a foreign vessel

passing by. The captain asked his translator where he was. The

translator not knowing where they were blurted out Nha` tra('ng or

white house in Vietnamese. The captain duly noted on his chart NhaTrang. Because most foreign languages do not make use of tones, the

captain's name for this part of the country stuck.
