Can‟t believe, the convention day is just 5 weeks away! For vol-

unteers of this convention, each of these days has become very

1) Facility: All the arrangements at the Hotel completed. Addi-

tional rooms are made available at „discounted price for con-

vention‟. Signed the service contract to build the stage. Au-

I recall of a

speech which

was published in

a souvenir in an

earlier VSNA

convention. The

speech was made

by an Engineer-

ing student

wherein she had

questioned- "Is

religion all about rituals?" and she had asked, "Are

the precepts of 12th century with the times?". It's

almost three years having read that and since then I

have been seriously analyzing the question raised to

find an answer. That's the hurdle I feel, we the fol-

lowers of Basava will have to address so that we

can present Basava into the 21st century.

Basava's principles have survived for over

900 years by the effort of many of our elders. The

first such attempt was made by a Telugu poet

Palkurki Somanath as early as 12th century by writ-

ing an epic - 'Basava Purana' in Telugu. The fa-

mous poet of Karnataka Bheemakavi translated this

epic into Kannada. Later around 15th century the

most revered 'Yati' -Saint Yadiyuru Siddalingeswa-

ra developed a team of 108 young Gurus to take up

the mission of Basava by spreading the Vachanas

and other related literature through 'Mutts'. The

efforts were further reinforced by King Proudade-

varaya. In a period of over five centuries just 4

great literary epics named 'Shoonya Sampadane'

were authored in which Vachanas were presented

as applied literature for realisation/ spirituality.

Further, only in the early 20th century Dr. Fa.Gu.

Halkatti from Bijapur took up the task of sourcing

vachana's from different Mutts and brought out the

Vachanas into limelight. The pace of propagation

increased substantially as many mutts of the recent

past strived hard and only in the year 1993, Gov-

ernment of Karnataka published all the available

Vachanas in 15 volumes, at affordable price. In the

past 18 years the Vachanas' started reaching many

homes in Karnataka which trigged of a literary rev-

olution as hundreds of people took up Research

works and even got their doctorates. Many small

institutions mushroomed throughout the length and

breadth of Karnataka. Further, Basava followers

lead by the founder of Basava Samithi Late Dr B.D.

Jatti, impressed upon the Government to develop

the Sharana Heritage Centres. The serious and ef-

fective efforts of Basava Samithi have yielded the

development of Kudala Sangama, Basava Kalyan

and many other Sharana centres as heritage and

tourism spots of Karnataka. Nearly over 100 crores

are invested by Government of Karnataka in devel-

opment activities.

Now Basava Samithi has taken up a project

on translating selected 2500 Vachanas of 173 Shi-

vasharanas into 21 Indian Languages including Ur-

du and English, with a hope that the horizon of

Basava will expand atleast after 900 years.

With the above preamble now the question

is 'How we move forward?' Now that we have

Electronic media at our disposal the ongoing pro-

cess of developing Basava's principles into 21st

century will accelerate. Our aim should be to focus

on youngsters as they are the torchbearers of the

future.

On this issue, after deep brainstorming we at Basa-

va Samithi, Bangalore came up with a novel idea

suiting the current trend. Since five years, in the

region of Karnataka, we started 'Personality Devel-

of spreading the message of Basavanna and other shivasharanas to every corner of the world.

Basava Samithi (http://www.basavasamithi.org) was established in the year 1964 under the Presidentship of Late Vice

President of India Dr. B.D. Jatti with the main objective of propagating the philosophy of Basaveshwara and his contempo-

raries. The Samithi has done commendable work in the religious, social, literary and cultural fields. Basava Samithi is pub-

lishing journals in seven languages including „Basava Patha‟

opment Programmes' based on Vachanas. The ex-

periment is the greatest success of the recent past as

the youngsters positively absorbed the views in a

most secular way. For Example, the precept high-

lighted in the following Vachana dictates universal

brotherhood.

"EªÀ£ÁgÀªÀ, EªÀ£ÁgÀªÀ? EªÀ£ÁgÀªÀ£ÉAzɤ¸À¢gÀAiÀÄå EªÀ £ÀªÀÄäªÀ, EªÀ £ÀªÀÄäªÀ, EªÀ £ÀªÀÄäªÀ£ÉAzɤ¸ÀAiÀÄå,

PÀÆqÀ®¸ÀAUÀªÀÄzÉêÁ, ¤ªÀÄä ªÀÄ£ÉAiÀÄ ªÀÄUÀ£ÉAzɤ¸ÀAiÀiÁå".

"Let not the world ask me as if a stranger-

Who is he? Who is he? Who is he? I would they

acknowledge me He's our own, our own, our

own.

Accept me as Thy son, of their own household

My Lord Kudala Sangama".

We have reached out to over five lakhs students

which has yielded enlightening experience. The

outcome of the series of Personality Development

Programs is that Basava is now being viewed as one

of the best personality developer. This process an-

swers many of the questions raised by youngsters.

The personality development of the west talks about

the mind, the body and the spirit. Their programs

address about mind and the body very effectively

but when it comes to spirit, they get dispirited. This

is where Basava scores above the others and his

perspective of the mind, body and the spirit in his

format of Guru, Linga and Jangama is astonish-

ing. Specially the spirit which he terms as Jangama

within the body becomes the focal point of a holis-

tic development of an individual be it of a 12th cen-

tury human being or the 22nd century human being.

As per Basava, the spirit or Jangama is within once

soul which is in an impure form. The following

Vachana guides us the process of purification.

"PÀ¼À¨ÉÃqÀ, PÉÆ® É̈ÃqÀ, ºÀĹAiÀÄ £ÀÄrAiÀÄ®Ä É̈ÃqÀ, ªÀÄĤAiÀÄ É̈ÃqÀ, C£ÀåjUÉ C À̧ºÀå¥ÀqÀ¨ÉÃqÀ vÀ£Àß §tÂÚ À̧ É̈ÃqÀ, E¢gÀ ºÀ½AiÀÄ®Ä É̈ÃqÀ, EzÉà CAvÀgÀAUÀ ±ÀÄ¢Þ, EzÉà §»gÀAUÀ ±ÀÄ¢Þ, EzÉà £ÀªÀÄä PÀÆqÀ® À̧AUÀªÀÄ zÉêÀ£ÉÆ° À̧ĪÀ ¥Àj" In other words, we have to dis-cover

(discover) the soul and your spirit enlightens you

with tremendous knowledge of nature which in

the philosophical language is termed as

"Atmasakshatkara"(Divine enlightenment) and

so on.....................

We the torchbearers of Basava should

understand Vachanas more closely from socio-

spiritual perspective rather than a socio-religious

format, as Basava preached universal brotherhood

which in his language, "Kudalasangamadeva idu

ninna dharm"'. i.e., 'Vishwa Pragne' or

'Universal Consciousness'.

While wishing all the members on the

occasion of the 34th VSNA Convention being

held in Boston, I feel we together must resolve

and draw out a clear strategy of furthering the

Basava Consciousness with a focus on young-

sters.

Have you ever heard of a 34 story building without hav-

ing floors 10 through 20 or having a weak 24th floor? Let

me rephrase. What does it tell you when the 34th story of

a building is being built and you know that a new floor is

getting added every year and it has been happening for

the last 33 years?

If you are asking for my opinion, it tells me that as differ-

ent team of workers keep stacking a new floor every year,

the floor that was built through prior years has been hold-

ing it up pretty strongly.

Yes, you are right. I am talking about the upcoming

VSNA 34th Annual Convention to be held in Boston, MA

on July 2nd and 3rd, 2011.

We started our efforts in June 2010 through claiming our

opportunity to host the VSNA 2011 convention. Since

then at a high level we encountered these challenges,

among many others..

coming up with a theme, logo, facility, fund raising,

News Letter, Website, IBC, IDD, VSNA Booth at AKKA

2010, finalizing the swamijis, dignitaries, artists, profes-

sional troupes, menu for the event, …I can go on to fill up

Our volunteers come in different ages, different experi-

ence, and different professional background and not to

forget different bank balances I am sure it is the

same everywhere. If I have to put my finger on the 2

things that keeps us all come together for VSNA Con-

vention, it is

Strong belief in the Preaching and Philosophy of

Basava and other Sharanas

Strong desire to spread these for the benefit of all,

long after we leave the stage.

With the world cup, IPL fever all around, it feels like we

are in the last leg of the innings and with the support of

all the volunteers within our chapter and with what some

of you have called “this year, we are seeing a lot of sup-

port from outside the host chapter”, we are confident of

making this event a very memorable one.

As a tribute to all the volunteers who have made the past

VSNA Conventions successful, we want to introduce the

“Museum of 33 VSNA Conventions” gallery.

With all of your support, we want to make the “Museum

of 33 VSNA Conventions” one of the highlights of this

convention and we need your help to collect all and any

artifacts from the past conventions. If you have volun-

teered or participated in any of the past 33 conventions,

please, please, please send us any of the artifacts that you

have. It could be Souvenir, Medals, Pictures, Decoration

items, News Letters, Videos (on CDs only), Copy of In-

vitation Letters, Copy of Acceptance letters from Guests,

etc. We want to display these during the convention as

Akka Mahadevi was a unique stalwart Veerarashaiva

saint, poet and mystic, a younger contemporary of

Anupama Anubhaavi Allama

Prabhu Deva, Bhaktibhandari

Basaveswara, Aviralagnani

Channabasavanna and

Shivayoga Sharadhi Shashanka

Siddharameswara. Akka was

all praise for the Shivashara-

nas. All these five saints were

inimitable spiritual and secular

revolutionaries in twelfth cen-

tury Karnataka. What is amaz-

ing is that Akka stands out,

even among these incompara-

ble erudite exemplary mystic saint poets, in terms of

boldness, vision, wisdom, poetry and renunciation. Ac-

cording to Indian Shakespeare Kalidasa, the ideal of re-

nunciation consists in owning the whole world while dis-

owning one's own self. In that sense Akka was a true Vi-

raagini. Her vachanas(pithy sayings, lyrical poetry, Kan-

nada Upanishaths) and songs excel, in their quality and

worth, the entire world poetry, mystical or secular, of all

poets severally and of all ages in terms of wisdom, vision,

value, clarity, reality, appeal, depth, prosody, imagery,

metaphor, striking simplicity and beauty. Nature poet

Wordsworth says: Poetry is spontaneous outflow of pow-

erful feelings. Akka's poetry is of very high order as her

devotionally wedded feelings for her Lord Channamal-

likarjuna were emotionally outpouring. Hers was devo-

tional love-poetry for personal expression. Even though

she died very young before she was thirty, she has left

behind her unsurpassable immortal literary legacy of eter-

nal value for all humanity in the form of 354 vachanas (a

few of them are about the creation of the universe) and

some songs. She wanted to bring name and fame for Shi-

vasharanas and so she did and said: "Nimma mandege

huvva tharuvenallade hulla tharenu: I only bring flowers

(for beautification) to your head not hay; I only bring

credit to you, not discredit". Sharanas at Anubhava Man-

tapa at Basava Kalyana in turn respected and admired her

most for her courage in viragya (renunciation) and wis-

dom. They referred to her as AKKA, elder sister.

The following Channabasavanna's vachana extols the

greatness of her literary excellence:

To the sixty vachans of the beginners(ancients, elders),

twenty vachanas of the Master(Basavanna) are equal;

To the twenty vachanas of the Master, ten vachanas of

Allama Prabhudeva are equal;

To the ten vachanas of Prabhudeva, five vachanas of

Ajaganna are equal;

To the five vachanas of Ajaganna, one vachana of elder

sister Mahadevi is equal,

At the holy feet of Lord Kudalachannasangama, Oh Sid-

dharama.

One Vachana of Akka is equal in brevity, value, essence,

worth and wisdom to five Vachanas of Ajaganna, to ten

Vachanas of Prabhudeva, to twenty Vachanas of Basa-

vanna and to sixty Vachanas of first Vachana writers.

Therefore, Akka's 354 Vachanas we have got now are at

least as valuable as Ajaganna's 1770, Prabhudeva's 3540,

Basavanna's 7080 and beginning vachana writers' 21,240

Vachanas! Unfortunately, only 10 vachanas of Ajaganna

are available to us. Only about 1426 vachanas of Basa-

vanna and 1645 of Allama Prabhu are unearthed by Hala-

katti and others. Thus, Akka's legacy to us is many times

more beneficial and valuable than those of all other Sha-

ranas severally.

Once, in Anubhava Mantapa, there was a discussion on

how a spiritual aspirant has to face life irrespective of

happiness or sorrow, praise or blame. Mahadevi minted

this all time illumining vachana then and there:

Listen, Lord Channa Mallikarjuna, being born in the

world,

One should be peacefully calm avoiding anger, in spite

of accolades and abuses.

Akka was a born saint. She was spiritual starting from

her infancy. She was devotionally and mentally married

to her Lord Channa Mallikarjuna. So, when her play-

mates once teased her about a possible prospective lucky

worldly husband, she said the following :

Mahadevi Akka was intoxicated with her spiritual love

for her beloved spiritual husband Lord Chennamallikar-

juna. She was wandering alone in the forest trying to see

and realize her Lord. In desperation she appeals to birds

and bees in the forest to find and show her Chennamal-

likajuna, in the following vachana which clearly reveals

the intensity of her

Chennamallikarjuna?

All the Sharanas implicitly and undoubtedly believed

in the existence of God. Akka's concept of God is fig-

uratively, vividly and lucidly expressed in the follow-

Like treasure hidden in the ground,

In the above vachana, the God is seen as the unmani-

fest Absolute, the Transcendent, by Akka. It is hidden

in the heart of every human being. In her following

vachana, the God is immanent in every thing in the

universe. For all the Sharanas, the God is both person-

al, pantheistic and absolute. For them, the God is infi-

nite, omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent.

O Lord Channamallikarjuna, being immanent in every

Akka, very determinedly and boldly, took off all

clothes and robed her body only with her long, beauti-

ful and profuse hair as a mark of renunciation. Some

mean minded thoughtless skeptics might have teased

and abused her in words. She has stoically and heroi-

nive ballirallade:

Ee konana maiya melana sollegalettha balluvayya?

Would a circling surface vulture know such depths

of sky as the moon would know?

Would a weed on the riverbank know such depths

of water as the lotus would know?

Would a fly darting nearby know the fragrance of

flowers as the bee would know?

O Lord Channamallikarjuna, only you would know

the way of your devotees:

How would these, these mosquitoes on the buffalo's

hide, know?

We know that mosquitoes are

mean parasites living only by

sucking blood from other living

beings. Akka's utter contempt for

her mean minded critics has

brought out from her the above

vachana in which she implies only

great men know and recognize the

greatness in others. Again the

metaphor in the vachana graph-

ically depicts her point of view

very effectively and forcefully.

Mahadevi Akka was born in

Uduthadi near Allama Prabhu's

birth place in Shimoga district,

Karnataka, India. She was initiated to Shivayoga by a

guru at the age of ten. As detailed above she was devo-

tionally wedded to her personal God Channamallikar-

juna. When she became a nubile young lady, Kaushika,

the king of the local kingdom, was very much attracted

to her incomparable physical beauty and wanted to

marry her. In terms of spirituality, Kaushika was total

zero. Though Akka was totally against marrying any

earthling, let alone Kaushika the heretic, she very re-

luctantly married him in order only to save her parents

from possible physical trouble by the powerful king.

But she imposed three conditions to Kaushika: 1. He

should not interfere and disturb her during worship of

her Lord Channamallikarjuna. 2. He should not object

to and interfere when she was spending time with her

gurus in religious discussions. 3. He should not force

her for conjugal relation without her consent.

Kaushika being lustful human being was insensitive to

Mahadevi's spiritual inclinations and practices. He vio-

lated all the agreed conditions in no time. Frustrated

and disappointed, Akka left the palace taking off all the

clothes on her body and robing herself only with her

long profuse beautiful hair. She wandered in the forests

and meadows in search of her spiritual husband Chan-

namallikarjuna, and finally arrived at Basava Kalyana,

Bidar district, and entered Anubhava Mantapa (Hall of

Spiritual Discourse) in session where the sharanas in-

cluding Basavanna, Channabasavanna, Siddharamaiah

were engaged in serious spiritual discussions under the

able chairmanship of Allama Prabhu. Initially, the Sha-

ranas were taken aback and aston-

ished by her sudden unusual appear-

ance. There was a long, comprehen-

sive and intense questioning and in-

terrogation of Akka by the Sharanas,

particularly gingerly by Allama

Prabhu. She answered all their quires

patiently, politely, satisfactorily,

adroitly, deftly and dexterously. At

the end every body was spellbound

and in one voice they all praised,

admired and recognized her as the

most saintly and poetic of them all.

That is when Channabasavanna

coined the first Vachana cited above.

She in turn was thankful to all of

them and promised to bring only credit to all of them.

After a brief stay at Kalyana, Akka left the place guid-

ed by Allama Prabhu, again in search of her Lord

Channamallikarjuna. She wandered around the forests,

intoxicated and ecstatic in search of her blissful unitive

God, singing and singing vachanas; and finally

breathed her last in a plantain grove at the foothills of

Shreeshaila Mountains in current Andhra Pradesh, and

united with the Lord eternally before she was even

thirty years old on this Earth. That is the remarkable

story of the first female inimitable Kannada saint-poet.

Hardly, one can find another such soul, male or female,

in the entire human history. That was our Amara

Veera Viraagini Mahadevi Akka, a brief bright

shining star!

To all the political dignitaries and the Swamijis, who

have come for this meeting, all the organizing commit-

tee of this veerashaiva conference and all the respecta-

ble delegates from all the provinces of India and other

countries, my respectable Namaskaragalu.

My name is Somashekar PALLEGAR, I have settled in

Florida, North America with my wife Geetha and Two

Sons, Anand and Ajay. I am an Active physician for 35

years, worked in UK for 20 years and now in USA for

15 years.

I am representing VSNA of USA as its current Presi-

dent. Veerashaiva community is the second largest

community in the world outside India. But we are a

kind of neglected community by Veerashaivas in this

country for help and developments.

VSNA has been conducting very successfully Annual

Conventions for the last 34 years. Most of the dignitar-

ies present here had an experience of our celebration

sometime or the other. Also our VSNA members have

enjoyed and helped by their attendance to the conven-

tion and kept our spirits high to keep our religion, tradi-

tion and work in order. We the VSNA has not discrimi-

nated any Swamiji or Giru Or Sharana, keeping one

goal to propagate Basava Philosophy. Our Unity is our

Strength and inspiration. We do not have CASTE sys-

tem in USA. I am shocked to see further split in the

Veerashaiva community in India.

My humble request to all of you in India is please,

please do not bring the divisions to USA and make it a

mini India for the selfishness and Personal interests.

This year We are celebrating our 34 Annual convention

in Boston, USA on 2 and 3rd of July 2011. the theme of

this convention is Arivu-Kayaka-Dasoha-Samanathe.

ADVAITISM OF VĪRAŚAIVAS

By Dr. Lingaraju Vīraśaivas/Liṅgāyatas are advaitins/advaitas in general;

they believe in only one Absolute Reality – Śūnya/Liṅga

(1). Monism is the western term that refers to the view

that Reality is basically

one. Śūnya encompasses

the whole universe. For a

commoner to understand

this further, it seems that

Vīraśaivas have adopted

Śiva (male component)

and Śakti (female com-

ponent) to represent

Śūnya. Śiva and Śakti are

inseparable; the insepara-

ble relationship is com-

pared to the fire and its

burning power. Śiva‟s

consciousness is known

as Power represented by

the symbol ŌṀ. Śakti is Śiva‟s Consciousness Force. The

universe and the worldly existence were created by Śakti

in Śiva‟s Consciousness. The activities are being played

out as Līlā (sport, game, play, play acting) in Śiva‟s Con-

sciousness. It is believed that Śiva, not only is tranquil,

but also has active consciousness at the same time (1).

Hence God is real and everything else is real within God‟s

Consciousness – that way everything is still one – one

Reality.

The Oneness philosophy is practiced by many Hindu

groups of which Vīraśaivas are one such group. Hindu-

ism accommodates both theistic (belief in the existence

of God) and atheistic (belief that there is no God) ide-

as. Based on the Vēdas, there are six major religious phil-

osophical systems which were developed by Hindu sages

at different periods of time (2).

In addition, many other systems have been adopted by

other Hindu groups. All these systems are so diverse that

each one may qualify to be a separate religion. The most

ancient of all the schools of Hindu Philosophy – the

Sāṅkhya System – is atheistic; but still it can help peo-

ple attain spiritual liberation (2). This system recognizes

two types of ultimate realities – Puruṣa and Prakṛti.

Puruṣa is pure spirit, and there are as many Puruṣas as

there are conscious beings. Prakṛti is primordial matter.

Puruṣa must acquire the knowledge – Vivēka jñāna – that,

as spirit, it is completely distinct from Prakṛti and

Prakṛti‟s evolved products – the body-mind complex. On-

ly this knowledge will disentangle Puruṣa from Prakṛti,

and result in its emancipation. This liberation can be

achieved even during one‟s life while still inside the body

(2). Sāṅkhyas are dvaitas, not advaitas, since they believe

in two realities.

The term Mīmāmsā, in the Mīmāmsā School of Philoso-

phy, more specifically the Pūrva-Mīmāṁsā Philosophi-

cal School, means an enquiry or deep analysis of a subject

worthy of reverence namely the Vēdas (3). Pūrva-

Mīmāmsā stresses the importance of sacrifices and rituals

mentioned in the Karma Kānḍa portion which is the first

or older part (Pūrva-Bhāga) of the Vēdas. The matter of

whether God exists or not, is not their concern. They be-

lieve that God is not the bestower of the results of actions

or karma, that every act automatically results in its fruit/

reward, yielding good rewards for merit and bad rewards

for bad deeds, and that, even the non-performance of daily

rituals (nityakarma) results in bad rewards (3). Further-

more, for them the question of creation is not important,

because the world has always been in existence without a

beginning (3). The Pūrva-Mīmāmsā School believes only

in after-death liberation of the soul. Mōkṣa can be

achieved through the right performance of rituals as en-

joined in the Vēdas. The liberated soul goes to svarga

(heaven, paradise) and enjoys heavenly bliss according to

the early Pūrva-Mīmāmsā System, but according to the

later System, mōkṣa is a state devoid of the possibility of

rebirth, and consequently of any pain or suffering; it does

not mention any heavenly bliss (2). It is to be pointed out

that their process of liberation is some times referred to as

karma mārga (karma path), but it should not be confused

with karma mārga and Karma Yōga of the Vēdantins.

Pūrva-Mīmāmsākas expect a reward for every action or

karma they perform. Whereas the philosophy of Karma

Yōga and Karma Mārga of the Vēdantins is that the kar-

ma should be performed without expectation of any re-

ward, and that it is dedicated to God. Pūrva-Mīmāmsākas

are not considered as advaitas.

The original treatise of the Uttara-Mīmāṁsā or Vēdānta

Philosophical School is known as Brahmasūtra. Sūtra

means a string, and Brahma Sūtra is said to be a string

that holds the Vēdic flowers in the form of a garland. The

authority behind Brahma Sūtra is the Upaniṣads. It deals

conclusively with the goal of the Sanyāsis, and it is an

enquiry into Ātman (Soul) within the śarīra (body) (3).

Advaitism of Veerashaivas (Contd.):

Several famous Philosophers – Śaṅkarāĉārya (788 to 820

AD), Rāmānujāĉārya (11th century AD) and Madhvāĉārya

(1199 to 1278 AD) – have written their versions of com-

mentaries on Brahmasūtra.

Śaṅkarāĉārya’s Advaita Philosophy is the one that is

usually referred to as Advaitism. Here Brahman is the on-

ly Reality (Satya), and everything other than Brahman is

Mitya (false) (4). Brahman is neither male nor female, and

has no active consciousness. It is pure knowledge. The

Jīva or the Individual Soul is Brahman itself. There can be

no real birth, death or origination for the Jīva – it is de-

scribed as being in par with the Jīva in a dream (4). From

Brahman‟s standpoint, the world has not really been creat-

ed; it is real to those who are under the spell of Māyā

(illusion). A rope in partial darkness may appear to be a

snake to an observer; at that moment the observer per-

ceives the snake to be real. But when the light shines, the

misperception disappears. Both Śankara‟s and Vīraśaivas‟

advaita philosophies agree with the concept of oneness

and that God is real, but they disagree with regard to

whether God has active consciousness or not. Both sys-

tems believe that one can attain oneness with the Abso-

lute, even when alive. The spiritual aspirant has to first go

through various moral and ethical practices, worship of

personal God, etc., and then go through intense meditation

which enables the aspirant the knowledge of the inner Di-

vine Self. Both systems believe that worship of, or medi-

tation on the monosyllable ŌṀ can lead to the highest

knowledge. When ignorance is completely eliminated,

and all sense of I or Thou is wiped out, oneness is at-

tained.

Rāmānujāĉārya’s version is known as Viśiṣṭādvitism. It

is a qualified monism. It holds the view that three entities

– God, soul and matter – are steady factors, and the three

form inseparable elements of one (5). “It is one and not

two, and still that one is made up of the three, a unity of

trinity and therefore it is known as Viśiṣṭādvaitam” (page

2 of reference 5). If so, some state that, it can be catego-

rized as traitism, not advaitism (4). Viśiṣṭādvaitins believe

that only bhaktimārg/bhaktiyōga can lead to mōkṣa

(salvation). They also believe that a person can attain

mōkṣa only after the person‟s death. This mōkṣa means

living blissfully in Vaikuṅṭha (god Viṣṇu‟s abode), sub-

servient to god Viṣṇu, not becoming one with the God.

Madhvāĉārya’s version of the Vēdānta Philosophy is

dualistic – Dvaita Vēdānta, and thus not advaitism.

Dvaita School believes in liberation only after death. A

person who has gone through rigorous ethical and moral

disciplines, followed by, acquiring right knowledge, right

action, non-attachment and devotional meditation on the

personal God, becomes fit for release or mōkṣa (2). There

are four gradations of mōkṣa; the first one is the lowest,

and the fourth one is the highest. Depending upon the per-

son‟s spiritual progress, the departed soul may achieve

any one of the four kinds of mōkṣas. In Sālōkya, the de-

parted soul resides blissfully in the abode of the personal

God. In Sāmīpya or Sānnidhya the soul enjoys the bliss of

extreme proximity to the personal God. In sārūpya, the

soul enjoys intense bliss by acquiring the form of the per-

sonal God. In Sāyujya or Kaivalya the soul becomes bliss-

fully absorbed in the personal God (2).

Another major philosophical system - The Yōga School –

was founded by Pataṅjali who is the author of the

Aṣṭāṅga (eight-limb) yōga, the practice of which results

in the Union of the Individual Self and the Universal Self.

The philosophy is that, complete control over the mind‟s

distortions and disturbances is necessary in order for the

perfection to manifest itself. God can be the subject of

concentration. But God as an all-powerful being to whom

supplication may be made, is not recognized in this sys-

tem. In order to follow this yōga, one need not believe in

or accept God. Patañjali prescribes meditation on personal

God as one of the methods for the attainment of the high-

est union (6). Aṣṭāṅga yōga is very similar to Śivayōga of

Vīraśaivas.

Nyāya and Vaiśēṣikā Schools of Philosophy: These two

schools have similar concepts. With logic and deduction,

they propound a theory that the world is real and not illu-

sory, and that the individual souls are many and different

from the cosmic Soul. They strongly affirm the existence

of God and that Paramēśvara created the universe (3).

Liberation is achieved by cultivating ethical virtues and

acquiring right knowledge. This state of liberation called

Apavarga is said to be beyond pleasure, happiness, pain or

any other experience. There is no rebirth after this

achievement (2). Both these Philosophical Schools are not

considered as Advaitas.

It appears that Vīraśaivism and Liṅgayatism are synony-

mous, and are used interchangeably.

However, the Liṅgayat version applies/uses the term

Liṅga for everything to emphasize the oneness philos-

ophy. Śūnya is Liṅga. The Universal Self is Mahāliṅga.

The Individual Self is Atmaliṅga. Śūnyasaṁpādane, the

attainment of oneness with the Absolute, is

Liṅgāṅgasāmarasya. The personal god Śiva is Iṣṭaliṅga

(portable form) and Sthāvaraliṅga (fixed version at a

temple). In the other older religious philosophical sys-

tems, the soul is said to be enclosed in five sheaths that

form three bodies. The outer sheath forms the gross body

Sthūlaśarīra; the middle three sheaths form the subtle

body Sūkṣmaśarīra; and the innermost sheath forms the

causal body Karaṇaśarīra. The triple body – the gross,

the subtle and the causal – are known in Vīraśaiva termi-

nology as tyāgāṅga, bhōgāṅga and yōgāṅga. The respec-

tive Liṅgāyat equivalents are Iṣṭaliṅga, Prāṇaliṅga and

Bhāvaliṅga (page 194, volume III of reference 1).

Śūnyasaṁpādane compilations are considered by

Vīraśaivas to be what the Bible is to the Christians. The

compilations consider Vīraśaiva philosophy to be Śiva-

advaita philosophy - Śivādvaitism. However some others

have raised controversy, stating that it is Śak-

tiviśiṣṭādvaitism (7). This term is not mentioned any-

where in Śūnyasaṁpādane. Professor Sakhare in his

book (7) states that the philosophy of Liṅgāyatism is the

same as that of Kashmere Śivādvaitas. Śiva is character-

ized and distinguished (viśiṣṭa) by His power (Śakti) or

capacity to work. Kashmere philosophers imply the

viśiṣṭatva of Śiva, but do not express it in so many

words; but Liṅgāyatas do – this is the point of difference

in terminology only (page 281 of reference 7). He contin-

ues – Liṅgāyat philosophy of Māyā is an improvement

upon Kashmerean theory where there is no explanation

of what the real Māyā is (page 290 of reference 7). He

admits that misconception is possible if the content of

Paraśiva, the un-manifest condition of the universe in his

consciousness (Śakti) is stressed; and that this could be

construed to be similar to the philosophy of Rāmānuja‟s

school of Viśiṣṭādvaita (page 290 of reference 7). By

emphasizing Śakti and using the term viśiṣṭa in his pro-

posal of Śaktiviśiṣṭādvaitism as the philosophy of

Liṅgāyatas, he may be causing too much of a confusion,

and his concept may be misconstrued.

As to the practice of Vīraśaivism, Śūnyasaṁpādane (1) is

replete with the use of the terms Śivādvaita and Śivādvi-

ata-bhakti where the worshipper and the worshipped are

one and the same. Despite the above controversy it

appears that Śiva-advaita philosophy is generally accept-

ed to be the philosophy of Vīraśaivas. If there is a need

for another term to differentiate the philosophy of

Vīraśaivas from others, may be, Liṅgāyata-advaitism,

Vīraśaiva-advaitism, or simply Liṅga-advaitism

(Liṅgādvaitsm) could be used.

committee, VSNA Convention & International Basava

Conference 2011. I am residing in Connecticut, since I

came to this country 27 years ago.

I welcome everybody to attend 2011 VSNA convention

which will be held at Boston, Massachusetts.

Since I came to this country, I have seen number of

Indian families migrating to this country at slower

pace. After 1990, because of this country‟s require-

ments for talented professionals and to the good fortune

of our motherland‟s investment in education we are

seeing more and more Indian families moving to USA.

Today, thousands of youngsters from all over India are

in this country working in various fields at different

capacities.

(These) young families have the opportunity to fall

back on established organization like VSNA to perpet-

uate their cultural heritage (and here in New England

we have put together young families who have been

here since a decade or so to showcase this grand event)

2011 VSNA convention committees are committed to

celebrate this event in a very well organized, cohesive

coordinated way. This cannot be done without partici-

pation from all of you. Convention committee is trying

to introduce new things to entertain your eyes, ears and

gustatory senses; please don‟t miss-out on this chance.

Here in New England our community is blessed with

very talented people in creative writing, acting and

singing. They have already performed on national stage

on various occasions. Most of all, our youngsters have

experience of organizing mega community events like

this.

Recently there has been tremendous effort to bring

youth participation in VSNA conventions. For this pur-

pose, we started-out with 2011 VSNA Convention

committee office bearers who are young but with ma-

ture aptitude, determination and conviction to success-

fully complete the mission against all odds.

These fine young men and women are whole heartedly

supported by senior members of the community. Our

Youth committee is bustling with high school seniors

to college students and young professionals. They are

working hard to put together various activities for

youth community.

We have put together excursion to different sight see-

ing places in historical Boston and families interested

in visiting Ivy college campuses for prospective stu-

dents.

Everybody from New England is awaiting for the show

of support from community worldwide and specifically

from U.S.A. and Canada. You can express your support

by registering as soon as possible. This event will give

a glimpse of culture, heritage and religion.

Since we don‟t have the privilege of experiencing the

Veerashaiva culture in our daily life when compared

with our loved ones back home, various events we cel-

ebrate as a community here will help our children to

learn look into our religion and culture.

Hence I urge everyone to make time, attend this event

and make it successful.
