Video Server (Encoder): converts analog images to compressed digital IP stream co p essed d g ta st ea

Network/IP Camera: Camera with Ethernet port and TCP/IP layer support

NVR (Network Video Recorder): PC that records video NVR (Network Video Recorder): PC that records video streams over IP networks running NVR S/W

NAS (Network Attached Storage): Network HDD’s which can be used for storing historical videocan be used for storing historical video

IP Surveillance Terminology

DAS (Direct Attached Storage) refers to a digital storage system directly attached to a server or workstation normally via y y ya SCSI Controller or Fiber connection

Gigabit Ethernet: (1000BaseT) Twisted Pair standard support transmission of Ethernet frames: (IEEE 802.3ab)

CAN (Camera Area Network) Network dedicated to video streaming devices, separated from data and/or voice networks

Multicast / Unicast: Two methods of routing packets through an IP network:IP network: Multicast can provide packets to multiple destinations by forming

a distribution tree, where receivers who ‘join’ / ‘request’ packets from that multicast group acquire packetso t at u t cast g oup acqu e pac ets

Unicast, on the other hand, provides packets to multiple destinations by creating a direct session to each requestor to acquire packets

IP Addressing

IP addresses can be static or dynamic (via a DHCP server) Note: NVR’s Cameras and Encoders should use static IP Note: NVR s, Cameras, and Encoders should use static IP

addresses, but DHCP with DNS is supported All devices must be in same IP network, unless using a router An IP address will contain a network ID and a host ID An IP address will contain a network ID and a host ID

For Example 192.168.0.100 with 255.255.255.0 (NetMask) 192.168.0. is the network ID in this example, 100 is the host ID

NetMask determines which part of the address is network ID 255.255.255.0 identifies the first three fields as the network ID
