MTHFR Gene

• MTHFR is a very important enzyme in the body necessary for methylation to occur

• This gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase

• The MTHFR gene mutation was discovered during the completion of the Human Genome Project

All Humans Have the Same Set of Genes

• These variations influence not only how you look, but also how your body reacts differently to external factors - especially the foods you eat and lifestyle you live

• We all have certain genetic variations or “defects” that can influence our health and how we metabolize and use certain nutrients

The Animated Genome from the SmithsonianNational Museum of Natural History

The Most Well-Studied MTHFR Variations

• The two main mutations of the MTHFR gene are C677T and A1298C

• MTHFR C677T mutations are tied to cardiovascular problems, elevated homocysteine levels, stroke, migraines, miscarriages and neural tube defects

• MTHFR A1298C mutations are tied to higher levels of fibromyalgia, IBS, fatigue, chronic pain, schizophrenia and mood-related problems

Common MTHFR Variations

This brief list helps to make more sense of the entire concept:

• MTHFR C677C = normal (green)

• MTHFR C677T = one copy (blue)

• MTHFR T677T = two copies (yellow)

• MTHFR A1298A = normal (green)

• MTHFR A1298C = one copy (blue)

• MTHFR C1298C = two copies (yellow)

MTHFR Mutation Symptoms and Signs

Although researchers still aren’t entirely sure which diseases and disorders an MTHRF mutation might contribute to most, evidence exists that the following health problems are tied to one of two primary forms of genetic MTHFR mutation:

• Autism

• ADHD

• Down syndrome

• Depression and anxiety

• Spina bifida

• Schizophrenia

• Bipolar disorder

• Autoimmune disorders

• Addictions (alcohol and drug dependence, for example)

• Chronic fatigue and pain disorders

• Heart problems, including strokes, low HDL “good” cholesterol levels and high homocysteine levels

• Hormonal problems and fertility problems, including miscarriages and PCOS

• Pulmonary embolisms

• Fibromyalgia

• Migraines

• Diabetes, Cancer

MTHFR Mutation Symptoms and Signs

Folic Acid Enrichment

It is so effective that the addition of folic acid back into flour, processed

cereals and crackers is now mandatory in Australia, the USA, Canada

and several other countries

Folic Acid Can Be Problematic

• This is a big problem for people who don’t metabolize folic acid well

• The recommended daily intake for folic acid is 400 mcg, yet un-metabolized folic acid already appears in the blood when we consume just 200 mcg per day

• Folic acid added to processed foods can cause a build-up in the body leading to toxicity --some studies even showed it increased cancer risk

Page 16: 11/13/2017 Continue Shining On with Nature’s Trees, … 1 Continue Shining On with Nature’s Trees, Leaves, Fruit and B’s! Cindy Klement, MS, CNS, MCHES Ann Arbor, MI Your Presenter:

16

Who is at Risk for Folic Acid Deficiency?

• Those with a dietary deficiency

• Modest alcohol intake - 1 drink/day inhibits the absorption of folic acid

• Individuals with malabsorption or GI disorders: Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, for instance

• Pregnant women and those of childbearing age: Folic acid is most effective when taken prior to conception to prevent neural tube defects and other birth defects

Active Folate and Pregnancy

• Conventional folic acid supplements are likely not protective of your child if it remains inactivated in your blood stream

• Active folate (L-methyl folate) is highly protective against neural tube defects

• Reduction of implantation failure

• Reduction in incidence of early (1st trimester) miscarriages

• Reduction in anemia

• Reduction in pregnancy-induced headaches

• Reduction in preterm birth

• Reduction in postpartum blood clots

• Prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) and other birth defects (congenital heart disease, urinary tract anomalies, oral facial clefts, limb defects, and pyloric stenosis)

• Reduction in language delay in offspring

17

More Folate in the Diet = More Opportunities to Create the Active Form

• The body easily recycles leftover folate into a harmless compound, whereas it cannot always do so with folic acid

• Without getting into more chemistry, that is why folic acid can easily accumulate in the blood

Consume High Folate Foods

• Beef liver (3 ounces = 215 mcg)

• Okra (1/2 cup = 135 mcg)

• Beans and lentils (1/2 cup = 130 mcg)

• Raw spinach (1 cup = 110 mcg)

• Asparagus (5 spears = 100 mcg)

• Mustard greens, turnip greens (1/2 cup = 85 mcg)

• Brussels sprouts (1/2 cup = 80 mcg)

• Strawberries (8 = 80 mcg)

Dark leafy greens contain the methylated form of folate that those with a gene defect need

• Coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, endothelial dysfunction, thrombophilia (increased tendency to excessive blood clotting)

• Depression and reduced efficacy of antidepressants

• Age-related dementia, Alzheimer’s disease

• Osteoporosis

• Male infertility

Vitamin B9

• Folate, an essential micronutrient, is a critical cofactor in metabolism

• Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9 (folate)

• Mammals cannot produce folate and depend on diet and supplementation to maintain normal levels

• External supplementation of folate may occur as folic acid, folinic acid or 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF)

Scaglione F, Panzavolta G. Xenobiotica. 2014 May;44(5):480-8.

Folic Acid and 5-MTHF Are NOT Equivalent

• Naturally occurring 5-MTHF is well absorbed, even when gastrointestinal pH is altered, and its bioavailability is not affected by metabolic defects

• Use of 5-MTHF also prevents the potential negative effects of unconverted folic acid in the peripheral circulation

• Using 5-MTHF instead of folic acid reduces interactions with pharmaceutical drugs, overcomes defects caused by the MTHFR mutation, and reduces the potential for masking vitamin B12 deficiency

Scaglione F, Panzavolta G. Xenobiotica. 2014 May;44(5):480-8.

B12 is Essential in Many Biological Processes

• Methylation

• Synthesis of methionine

• Synthesis of folic acid

• Red blood cell production

• Nerve cell growth and function

• Neurotransmitter metabolism

• DNA synthesis

• Epigenetic gene expression

MTHFR Tips

• It is important to focus on gut health so that the body can absorb the nutrients from food as effectively as possible, especially when the body has an impaired ability to use certain nutrients

• Support the gut with fermented foods and probiotics -- this also helps avoid candida, which can make MTHFR-related problems worse

Avoid Environmental Toxins

• Those with an MTHFR gene defect have an impaired ability to eliminate toxins

• As much as possible, they need to avoid plastics, antibacterial soaps, chemicals in personal care products and cleaning products, and scented candles, which can all release harmful chemicals

Reduce Anxiety and Depression

• Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation and are beneficial for cognitive health

• Exercise helps to improve hormonal balance and sleep quality

• Essential oils are soothing and can help to elevate moods, detoxify the body, and create better sleep while reducing stress

AVOID “Fortified” and “Enriched” Foods

• Spaghetti – enriched (1 cup = 127 mcg)

• Macaroni – enriched (1 cup = 172 mcg)

• Rice – enriched (1 cup = 307 mcg)

• Bagel (4” – 119 mcg)

• Breakfast cereals – vary based on brand – check food label

Boost Detoxification

• Eliminate use of recreational drugs and reduce alcohol intake, both of which can make symptoms worse by interfering with methylation

• Avoid Heavy Metals: They are harder to remove from the body for those with the MTHFR gene defect

• Help a Body Out: Since those with an MTHFR defect have an impaired ability to eliminate toxins, support the body with detox baths, perspiration (exercise and sauna), drinking lots of water, and skin brushing

Boost Detoxification

• Only use natural beauty and household products that are free from harsh chemicals

• Consume fresh fruits and vegetables to increase antioxidant intake

• Cleanse daily with Liquid Green Drink

• Do quarterly cleansing with 14-day Berry Flavoured Cleanse

Get Enough Quality Sleep

Make it a priority to get 7-9 hours every night, sticking to a regular schedule as much as possible

– Create a relaxing bedtime routine

– Stay off of electronic devices

– Read something soothing

– Cool your bedroom a bit, and make it dark

L-methyl folate

• Aside from cutting your intake of fortified and enriched flour products, folic acid supplements can be replaced with the active form L-methyl folate

• It bypasses any MTHFR defects and is shown to be equally (if not more) effective at increasing plasma folate levels and reducing homocysteine concentrations

• L-methyl folate is also better absorbed and interacts with fewer medications than folic acid

Discuss Medications with Your Doctor

Some medications can further deplete already low folate levels or interfere with methylation and make symptoms worse:

– Antibiotics

– Birth control pills

– Hormone replacement therapy drugs

– Anticonvulsants

– Antacids

– NSAID pain relievers

– Antidepressants

– Chemotherapy treatments

– Cholesterol-lowering drugs

– Blood pressure medications

– Metformin

Summary

• MTHFR mutations are caused from inheriting one or more mutated genes that interfere with the normal process of methylation, folate conversion, and enzyme production

• Multiple health conditions have been associated with MTHFR mutations

Summary

• Factors that can make MTHFR mutation symptoms worse include:

• Eating a poor diet

• Folic acid in enriched foods

• Leaky gut syndrome/poor absorption

• Imbalanced gut microbiome

• Malnutrition

• Gastrointestinal illness

• High amounts of stress

• Alcohol and drug use

• Toxin exposure

Summary

Natural treatments and ways to manage MTHFR symptoms include:

• Improving gut health

• Protecting heart health

• Getting more natural folate in the diet

• Acquiring methylated B2, B3, and B6 vitamins

• Lowering intake of inflammatory foods

• Supplementing with L-methyl folate with vitamin B12

• Managing stress

• Exercising

• Getting enough sleep

Avoid Potential Methyl folate Side Effects

• Start slowly

• Personalize, and trust your body and symptoms

• Expect some adjustment, pulse your dose

• Remember that methyl folate is something your body actually needs, and has been compensating for, so it’s important to find a way to take it

• Remember also that you are allowing your body to start to catch up on detoxification and repair, which can also increase your level of inflammation while things are being sorted out
