Synopsis 本事
本事體弱多病、孤零無依的林黛玉，投奔到外祖母——賈府，與表兄賈寶玉一見如故。
在大觀園裏，寶玉與情趣相投的黛玉心心相印，他倆避開了貴族家庭的約束，偷讀《西廂記》，抒發自由思想，也滋長他們之間的愛情。
寶玉的父親賈政望子成龍，但寶玉卻蔑視功名利祿，反對禮教傳統，被黛玉引為知己。賈政無法容忍寶玉的叛逆，藉故痛打寶玉。寶玉傷癒，黛玉去訪他，恰巧寶玉的丫環晴雯心中不快，使黛玉嘗了閉門羹，生成誤會。
落花飛雪，黛玉觸景傷情，葬花賦詞，抒發精神上的壓抑。寶玉聽到葬花詞，向她吐露愛意。
為了賈府的利益，選擇了薛寶釵為媳，賈母、鳳姐等人更巧使調包計，使黛玉受到嚴重打擊，她在病中焚了詩稿，傷心而逝。
黛玉去世之時，正是寶玉洞房之夜，當寶玉識破調包計後，便不顧一切地奔去找黛玉。
寶玉在黛玉的靈前放聲大哭後，離開那「除了門前的一對石獅子是乾淨的」之外，充滿骯髒腐朽的賈府，頭也不回地出去了。
SynopsisLin Daiyu, a sickly and feeble orphan, seeks shelter from her maternal grandmother in the Jia mansion after her mother dies. There she meets her cousin Jia Baoyu, and they instantly connect.
The Jia family soon move into the opulent Grand View Garden. Shackled by the suffocating traditions of a noble family, Baoyu and Daiyu ease their craving for
freedom by reading, albeit stealthily, Romance of the West Chamber, a novel banned because of its portrayal of free love and teenage rebellion. Love blossoms between the two.
Against the wishes of Jia Zheng, his staunchly Confucian father, Baoyu refuses to observe old moral codes and holds fame and fortune in contempt. On discovering Baoyu’s friendship with an actor, a friendship considered socially taboo at the time, the fuming father gives his son a severe beating.
Daiyu goes to visit Baoyu while he is recuperating. Skybright, Baoyu’s maid, who happens to be in a bad mood, angrily turns her away falsely telling her that Baoyu wants no visitors. Daiyu leaves with a heavy heart.
Amidst falling snow and drifting petals, Daiyu, disillusioned with Baoyu’s fickleness, tries to assuage her grief by burying fallen blossoms in a quiet corner of the garden. Misunderstandings are solved as Baoyu, awestruck by Daiyu’s “Flower-burying Song”, professes his love to her.
Meanwhile, the Jia Matriarch and Wang Xifeng, an influential woman in all the household matters, plot a marriage of convenience for Baoyu. Although Baoyu is assured that he is marrying Daiyu, Xue Baochai, an orthodox, obedient girl, is chosen instead as the bride. On her sickbed, a devastated Daiyu burns all her poems to ashes, and dies of heartbreak whilst drums and gongs are beating in celebration of Baoyu’s marriage. When the cruel truth dawns on Baoyu, he storms out of the nuptial chamber to look for Daiyu.
Baoyu bursts into floods of tears in front of Daiyu’s spirit tablet. A rebel against feudal oppressions for his entire life, Baoyu leaves the hopelessly rotten, vice-ridden Jia family, where everything is corrupt except the pair of lion statues lying at the entrance.

唐代公主嫁給功臣郭子儀的幼子郭曖為妻，自恃金枝玉葉，對郭曖及公婆都很傲慢，要郭曖對她行君臣大禮。
年輕氣盛的郭曖，因公主拒為郭子儀的七十壽辰慶賀，觸發了積壓已久的憤懣，回到宮中，打碎宮門紅燈，不行君臣大禮，並打了公主；從未受過一點兒委屈的公主撒嬌，故意撕破百寶衣，再跑到皇宮哭訴。
The Tang Princess is married to Guo Ai, son of the honoured general Guo Ziyi. Conscious of her royal blood, the Princess is reluctant to give her husband and in-laws the respect they deserve, even demanding that her husband greet her at home with a kowtow. When the Princess refuses to condescend to visit her father-in-law on his seventieth birthday, festering resentment comes to the surface.
While storming into the palace in a fit of rage, Ai smashes the red lanterns at the entrance. He refuses to kowtow to the pampered Princess and, worse still, slaps her in anger. Shocked by the disrespectful treatment, the Princess tears her royal outfit, a melodramatic act that increases the agony of the situation, before rushing to the Emperor to sob.

唐代天寶年間，長安詩妓李亞仙（藝名李娃），結識官家子弟鄭元和，彼此愛慕情深，結為夫婦。在院中年餘，元和資財耗盡，鴇母把他哄騙出院，再與亞仙遷往他處。元和遍尋亞仙不得，流落長安，權作歌郎。
鄭父鄭北海以其子玷辱門第，怒不可遏，杖責元和致昏死。鄭父以為其已死，盛怒之下命僕宗祿拋屍郊野。
During the Tang dynasty, Zheng Yuanhe, scion of a notable family, falls in love with Li Yaxian, a courtesan in the capital city of Chang’an. Soon thereafter they marry. After living in the brothel for a year and spending his entire fortune, Zheng is banished by the brothel owner and Li is moved to an unknown place. Searching throughout Chang’an for Li to no avail, the desolate Zheng is reduced to eking out a living as an itinerant singer. On hearing of Zheng’s affair with a prostitute, his father Zheng Beihai beats him senseless and, incandescent with fury, orders his servant Zong Lu to dispose of the body, presumed dead, in the mountains.

Famed courtesan Jiao Guiying comes to the aid of impoverished scholar Wang Kui and marries him. Before Wang leaves for the official examinations, they swear faithfulness to each other at the Temple of the Sea God. But when Wang ranks first in the examinations, he is offered a marriage alliance with a noble family. Unable to resist the temptation and intimidation from the rich and influential, Wang turns against his wife and sends a letter annulling their marriage. On receiving the letter the devastated Jiao taggers to the temple, where she pours out her grief to the Sea God before hanging herself.

From the portrait Meng Lijun has given to her fiancé, Huangfu Shaohua, the Emperor realises that Meng, his capable Prime Minister, is in fact a stunning beauty in male disguise. The Emperor takes Meng on a walk in the imperial garden, where he uses every trick up his sleeve to lure his object of desire into confession. In a battle of wits Meng comes out the winner and thwarts the Emperor’s amorous advances.

吏部尚書李廷甫將愛女李秀英許配同鄉秀才王玉林，李秀英表兄顧文友愛慕表妹，求婚不成，懷恨在心，設計陷害，致使王玉林懷疑秀英不貞。成婚數月，王玉林對秀英態度冷淡，時常惡語相加。李秀英始終以禮相待，百般體恤，竟遭到他的拳腳，提出解除婚約。
後來真相大白，王玉林後悔莫及。他在考中狀元後，向夫人奉上鳳冠霞帔，請求原諒，被她再三拒絕。最後，在婆婆和父母的勸說下，李秀英夫妻始得和好。
Gu Wenyou has long desired Li Xiuying to be his wife. After his proposal is rejected he devises a sinister plot to seek revenge. Meanwhile, Li Tingfu, Chief of the Ministry of Personnel, has betrothed his daughter Xiuying to Wang Yulin, a scholar from the same hometown. On the nuptial night, Gu leaves Wang a love letter intended for his newlywed wife in an attempt to implicate her in adultery. Taken in by the slander, Wang remains aloof and insults his wife in punishment. The kindly and dutiful wife swallows the insults, but when verbal abuse escalates into physical violence, she asks for divorce.
Later the vengeful scheme is exposed and Xiuying’s name cleared. The remorseful Wang repents by studying hard for the imperial examinations. He returns as the top scholar and begs for pardon, “the phoenix headdress and robe of sunset gauze”, worn only by brides from privileged backgrounds, in his hands. His pleadings initially fail to soften Xiuying. At last, with the help of Wang’s mother and Xiuying’s parents, the estranged couple is reconciled.

Synopsis 本事
本事書生張珍與金丞相之女牡丹幼訂婚約。張珍不幸親亡家敗，投奔金府。丞相不悅，藉口三代不招白衣女婿，命他于碧波潭畔草廬攻讀。張珍朗朗書聲，感動了碧波潭中鯉魚精，她變作牡丹與之相會。天長日久，兩情漸深。
一日，張珍誤遇嫌貧愛富之真牡丹，被誣為盜，趕出金府，鯉魚精聞訊趕來，好言安慰。張珍愛其情真意摯，品格高尚，決定攜她同返家鄉，結為夫妻。不料途中又被丞相捉回，於是兩個牡丹，真假難分，丞相請包公來斷案，鯉魚精也命龜精變成假包公，兩個包公，自然無法斷案。丞相又請天神捉妖，鯉魚精眼看敗北遇險，幸逢觀音前來救助。但她不願為仙隨歸南海，寧願忍痛拔鱗，貶落凡塵。
一雙志誠男女，終於締結良緣。
SynopsisZhang Zhen, a scholar, was betrothed to Peony, the daughter of Jin the Prime Minister, as a child. After his parents died, Zhang, bereft and homeless, seeks shelter in the Jin mansion. He is cold-shouldered by the class-conscious minister, who dictates that the scholar study for the imperial examinations in a shabby hut by Green Ripple Lake. Zhang’s diligent studying wins the affection of Carp, a fairy living in the lake, who approaches the scholar in the guise of Peony. Love blossoms.
One day, Zhang chances on the real Peony, a snobbish lady who loathes the poor. Thinking she is his love, he approaches her only to be regarded as a common thief. Thrown out of the Jin mansion, Zhang finds solace in Carp’s words of comfort. Her sincere love and noble qualities move Zhang who promises to marry her in his hometown. Zhang attempts to elope with Carp but is intercepted by the angry minister, who is dumbfounded when he finds himself confronted by two Peonies, the spitting images of each other.
At his wits’ end, the minister asks Judge Bao to deliver justice. More head-scratching follows, however, as the Fairy Tortoise transforms himself into another Judge Bao in defence of Carp. The minister seeks help from the Heavenly Guards to apprehend the spirits. On the verge of defeat, Carp is brought to safety by the Goddess of Mercy. The devoted fairy chooses to forsake her divinity for a mortal life, regardless of the pain she must endure to become human. The star-crossed lovers are reunited at long last, never to be parted.

Synopsis 本事
本事唐貞觀元年間，書生張珙往蒲關訪好友白馬將軍杜確，路經普救寺，偶遇寄居寺內的已故相國之女崔鶯鶯，一見愛慕，遂借讀西廂，意圖親近。
是夜，鶯鶯照例到花園焚香，張生情不自禁隔牆高吟，鶯鶯依韻酬和，張珙更為傾倒。
正當張珙和鶯鶯兩心相縈時，河橋孫飛虎兵圍普救寺，強行欲索鶯鶯為妻。崔夫人無法，只得當眾言明：誰能退得賊兵，願將愛女相配。張珙挺身而出，致書杜確。杜確兵到，解了寺圍。不料崔夫人又筵前毀約，命鶯鶯稱張珙為兄，使一對有情人竟不能成眷屬。
鶯鶯瞞過紅娘而又遣使她遞詩給珙，約張珙在花園相見。張珙跳牆來會，鶯鶯為禮教所束縛，又恐紅娘覺察，臨時設計，責斥了張珙幾句而去。事出意外，張珙因此成病。鶯鶯終究不忍，在紅娘的支持、鼓勵下決計夜入西廂，安慰張珙。
不久，崔夫人有所覺察，拷問紅娘。紅娘據實直說，並責夫人失信負義。夫人不得已，允把鶯鶯許配張珙。但又以崔家三代不招白衣女婿為由，逼張珙立即上京趕考，得中後方許成婚。鶯鶯和張珙離愁別恨，涕泣叮嚀而別。
SynopsisOne day during the Tang dynasty, the scholar Zhang Gong sets off to visit his close friend Du Que, dubbed the General on White Horse. Zhang walks past the All Mercy Monastery, where he happens on Cui Yingying, the daughter of the deceased Prime Minister. Infatuated, Zhang sets out to win the maiden’s heart, and stays in the monastery on the pretext of studying in the West Chamber. That evening, Yingying makes incense offerings in the garden. From the other side of the wall is heard the singing of Zhang, whose affection is reciprocated as Yingying sings along. Love is in the air.Meanwhile, the bandit “Flying Tiger” Sun lays siege to the temple, threatening to take Yingying as his wife. Lost in despair, Madame Cui pledges to marry her daughter to anyone who can ward off the assailant. Zhang seeks help from Du who arrives in time to drive the bandit away. At the celebration banquet, Madame Cui, to the lovers’ dismay, reneges on her promise by declaring them family. The budding romance is soured.While keeping Red Maid, her maid-companion, in the dark, Yingying asks her to deliver Zhang a poem inviting the scholar to a rendezvous. Zhang climbs over the wall into the garden to meet his love. But, fearing that Red Maid will discover the truth, Yingying rues her bold move and drives Zhang away. The pangs of unrequited love make the young man sick. Yingying cannot conceal her feelings any further and, with Red Maid’s help, steals into the West Chamber in the middle of the night to comfort her estranged lover. Before long, Madame Cui becomes suspicious and interrogates Red Maid. The upright maid discloses all and reprimands her old mistress for her lack of integrity. After much ado Madame Cui agrees to the match on one condition: Zhang must achieve scholastic success to qualify as her son-in-law. Before leaving for the capital to sit the official examinations, Zhang bids Yingying a tearful farewell.

上海越劇院是國內外聞名的國家戲曲劇院，前身華東越劇實驗劇團和華東戲曲研究院實驗劇團。1955年3月，華東戲曲研究院停辦，由該院所屬兩個越劇團及部份行政與藝術專業人員組建成上海越劇院，袁雪芬女士出任第一任院長，現為名譽院長。現任院長李莉。
劇院繼承革新和發展越劇藝術的理念，成就顯著。歷年來，創作、改編、整理的傳統戲、歷史戲和現代戲近400齣，製作了《梁山伯與祝英台》、《西廂記》、《紅樓夢》、《祥林嫂》等代表作，獲獎無數，包括中國文化部文華表演獎及中國戲劇梅花獎。劇院先後赴德國、俄羅斯、越南、新加坡、泰國、日本、法國、美國、荷蘭等國家演出，贏得盛譽，並為國際文化交流作出貢獻。
Established in 1955 by Yuan Xuefen, the Shanghai Yueju Opera Theatre was formed when the First Company of the Eastern China Yueju Experimental Troupe (founded in 1951 with the original name as National Eastern China Yueju Experimental Troupe) and the Second Company of the Eastern China Yueju Experimental Troupe (founded in 1954) joined forces.
Over the years the troupe has created many new works and adopted and arranged traditional, historical and modern operas. There are nearly 400 works in its repertoire including The Butterfly Lovers, Romance of the West Chamber, A Dream of Red Mansions and Xianglin's Wife. A Dream of Red Mansions has been adopted and arranged for production in Korea by the Korean National Art Theatre.
The troupe has been active both in China and abroad winning numerous awards, including the coveted Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Theatre and the Ministry of Culture award for excellence in performance. The troupe has toured to Germany, Russia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, France, the US, the Netherlands, furthering cultural exchange.
