EDITORIAL

Year 2010 gives us a fresh opportunity to take a look at our past activ-

ities, evaluate their results and set new goals.

During 12 years, which passed since the day of its founding, STYLE

Magazine chronologically covered construction, architecture and art news,

introduced new faces and publicized interesting artistic works and initiatives.

This process was largely facilitated by international competition Architectural

Award – the project, which we launched four years ago. This competition,

which enjoyed success and attracted considerable number of participants,

soon acquired international status and currently features a highly diverse

range of interesting projects, created by Georgian and foreign authors. In

2009 STYLE Magazine issued publication “Georgian Architecture and

Contemporary Georgian Architects”, the importance of which made us start

to work on the second part of the book.

We would like to thank all the professionals maintaining cooperation

with us, because it is due to their efforts that our joint activity is enriched

with new prospects and outlooks.

Starting with 2010, editorial house of STYLE Magazine and Union of

Architects of Georgia, the national section of the International Union of Architects,

have started cooperation, aiming at promotion of new developments and

processes occurring in the spheres of architecture and construction.

Considering all of the above and acknowledging the importance of archi-

tectural education and practice for the future of our country we believe it is

our primary goal to contribute to development of architecture in Georgia;

namely:

- to support activity of architectural schools,

- to promote architects,

- to organize architectural competition of domestic and international level.

On December 25 2009 Parnassus book shop located in 10 Pushkin Street

hosted presentation of the book “Georgian Architecture & Contemporary Georgian

Architects”.Author: Nino Laghidze

Project organizers: STYLE Magazine, Architects’ Club

STYLE Magazine (architecture, interior, design) and Architect’s Club pre-sented their joint project – book titled “Georgian Architecture & ContemporaryGeorgian Architects” (published in Georgian and English).

The project is the first of its kind implemented in Georgia. The publica-

tion is intended both for professionals and a wider range of public.“Georgian Architecture & Contemporary Georgian Architects” is only the

beginning of our project. In January 2010 we started work on the second

volume of the book, in which we hope to further explore the past and pres-

ent of Georgian art, especially considering that the professionals already startto show increasing interest toward our activity.

In September 2009 Architectural Office of

Tbilisi City Hall launched competition “Single-fam-

ily House Project Designs for Those Wishing to

Start Construction”.

The competition aimed at identifying of the most

efficient single-family house architectural projects,

which would be made publicly available at no charge;

the goal of this initiative was to improve the living

conditions of the local population and stimulate the

construction business.

Apart from the main goal, the competition will

contribute to struggle against unemployment, refin-

ing of the architectural image of Tbilisi and sim-

plification of procedures required for obtaining of

construction permits.

The competition, organized in Tbilisi, was

funded by the Architectural Office of Tbilisi City Hall

from local self-government budget lines and its own

non-budgetary resources.

The organizing committee requested that com-

petition participants submit their entries in the form

of archived ArchiCAD or AutoCAD files and addi-

tionally convert every worksheet into PDF format;

architectural part of the project had to be comple-

mented by estimated budgets and the cost of adapt-

ing the project to specific terrain (these require-

ments were posted at www.Tbilisi.gov.ge/archi-

tect). In addition, competition winners were obliged

to provide the organizing committee with an A2

high-resolution collage reflecting the whole project

(plans, sections, facades, renders, brief textual expla-

nation) for exhibition purposes.

In December 2009 the best projects were iden-

tified by the panel of judges, appointed by Tbilisi

City Hall decree no.23.05.778 of August 31 2009.

All of these projects are publicly accessible at the

website of the Architectural Office of Tbilisi City

Hall.

Competition-winning projects were purchased

from their authors by Architectural Office of Tbilisi

City Hall and made publicly available for construc-

tion within Tbilisi area (except cultural heritage pro-

tection and special development regulation zones).

STYLE Magazine has the pleasure of present-

Highway Traffic Department of Ministry of

Regional Development and Infrastructure of

Georgia announced a competition, aiming at posi-

tioning, adaptation and project development for

two recreational/service hubs on the express road

E-60, in the vicinity of Gori pass (85th-92nd kilo-

meters) in accordance with preliminarily devel-

oped architectural concept and specific techni-

cal parameters. Competition participants had to

submit their proposals on construction of the offered

conceptual models, including information on the

choice and cost of construction materials, key

dimensions of the facilities and the whole site

intended for development.

Apart from western European experience of

arranging recreational/service hubs of such type

(e.g. functionality and traffic security requirements),

competition participants were welcome to offer

innovative proposals.

In two weeks after submission deadline, com-

petition entries were published at the Highway

Traffic Department website. Competition winning

projects, designed by "Alioni-99" Ltd. and archi-

tectural studio "Kobulia and Partners" (the latter

was created on JSC "Wissol Georgia"s assign-

ment) were purchased by Highway Traffic

Department, though the authors retained the copy-

right and received a prevalent right for creation

of detailed architectural projects of the above recre-

ational/service hubs.

SOFO GOGOLAZE SOFO ANTIZE

Tbilisi State Academy of Arts always retained links with dif-

ferent international bodies, including Romualdo Del Bianco

Foundation. The Foundation aims at cultural integration, but main-

tains a markedly respectful approach toward cultural identity.

Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation regularly arranges conferences,

workshops and competitions, which up to now have been attend-

ed by representatives of 46 countries; Florence is annually vis-

ited by over 1000 students and teachers wishing to get involved

in meetings of different kinds, study advanced technologies, share

experience and once more prove to the whole world that the

art stands above political confrontation and unites the people

who are really fond of their work and strive toward novelty and

success.

The Foundation runs an internet portal, where artists from

all over the world can upload their works; portal users them-

selves identify the best works of art in this or that category by

voting online. Two Georgian students were awarded victory in

this online competition – Shorena Otkhozoria, who was award-

ed Italian presidential medal and a monetary prize of 2000 Euros,

and Sopho Chkhenkeli, whose prize was 500 Euros.

Tbilisi State Academy of Arts established cooperation with

Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation in 2005. Foundation repre-

sentatives were contacted by professor Nana Iashvili, one of

the founders and acting dean of Media Arts Faculty. Ms. Iashvili

is fully involved in the activities of the Foundation; together with

G. Bughadze, she acts as Foundation expert, thus contributing

to regular participation of Georgian students in competitions and

conferences, organized by Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation.

Success of Georgian students in Florence is neither novelty

nor a surprise any longer; they always come up with refined,

original and professionally implemented works. The same can

be said about this year’s visit – our students publicly present-

ed their graduation works in good English and two girls won

the best awards: Sopho Gogoladze was awarded the grand-

prix (4000 Euros) for her “Garden in the Sky”, and Sopho Antidze

received Italian presidential medal for the work “Imaginary World”.

Both projects were developed in 3D format under supervision

of Ms. N. Iashvili.

I have been to Florence on numerous occasions, but the

emotion which swept over me when our students were award-

ed, made me set this particular visit all aside from my other

trips to this city. The award ceremony still keeps popping up

before my eyes as an elaborate sketch: Nana Iashvili standing

on the stage, surrounded by our students, each holding an award

certificate. We, their teachers – myself, Maia Koiava (English)

and Rusudan Eristavi (computer graphics) – watched them from

auditorium and our eyes were filled with tears; all of us had a

strong feeling of an invisible chain linking together the young-

sters on the stage, ourselves and other teachers, whom we

had left behind in Tbilisi and who had made an immense con-

tribution to training and professional education of these students.

This year’s competition involved countries like Ukraine, Russia,

Switzerland, Japan, etc. All participants were united by their devo-

tion toward art and no one remembered political tension exist-

ing between some of the represented countries. To express my

unity with foreign colleagues and enable them to get acquaint-

ed with our rich cultural heritage I distributed several copies of

my book “Georgian Ornament” as gifts.

Our students, together with other participants of the compe-

tition, took active part in 3-day workshop “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”,

dedicated to idea generation and experience sharing.

During one of the meetings organized by the Foundation,

when Nana Iashvili spoke about Media Arts Faculty of Tbilisi

State Academy of Arts and demonstrated master degree grad-

uation papers, activities of the Faculty caused interest of deputy

director of Uffizi Gallery; he wondered whether we had foreign

art students in Tbilisi, studying by our programmes and if the

Academy of Arts is ready to take in any more foreigners. This

question assured me once again that Tbilisi State Academy of

Arts fully satisfies international education standards and our edu-

cation programs enable students to receive quality training and

achieve professional success both in Georgia and abroad.

Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation does not limit itself to

one-off events. At the time being, two Georgians – Nino Bughadze

and Natia Ebralidze – work in Florence, organizing various exhi-

bitions and events on behalf of the Foundation activities. During

one of his speeches, Foundation Director Paolo Del Bianco men-

tioned them as “ambassadors”, who will spread the knowledge

and experience acquired in Italy within Georgia. This fact indi-

cates that the Foundation is strongly interested in cooperation

with Georgian students and artists. It is an honor that on April

20-23 Tbilisi State Academy of Arts will host international festi-

val “Quality and Profession” and conference “Life Beyond Tourism”,

organized by Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation.

I can say that cooperation between Tbilisi State Academy

of Arts and Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation has already brought

significant results and there are a lot more interesting meet-

ings, conferences and joint activities ahead. It is pleasing to

see Georgia so active on international stage and Georgian stu-

dents achieving success due to the high level of their profes-

sional education.

I do hope that my correspondence was useful in inform-

ing the readers about the interesting instance of international

cooperation, which enabled Georgian students and teachers to

prove once again that their abilities are unlimited and their works

are worthy of highest award.

On February 22-28 2010 Bakuriani ski resort hosted the

33rd seminar of architect skiers. The event was organized by

the Union of Architects of Georgia, SKIA – Georgian Club of

Architect Skiers, and STYLE Magazine.

This year’s meeting aimed at public presentation of urban

development projects, created by Georgian architects for ski resort

areas (Gudauri, Bakuriani and Bakhmaro) and involvement of

governmental officials and intelligentsia representatives into dis-

cussion of issues connected with Georgian ski resort areas and

their development.

SKIA meeting was hosted by Apollon Hotel, managed by

veteran skier Otar Gotsiridze and his daughter Inga, who sur-

rounded SKIA participants with genuine family atmosphere.

The event incorporated a student competition, organized

by the Union of Architects of Georgia and the Architecture,

Urbanistics and Design Faculty of the Georgian Technical University.

The goal of the competition was to create a sketch proj-

ect of a small panorama cafe on top of Didveli skiing track in

Bakuriani. Competition theme caused considerable interest on

the part of the students – exhibition hall of Apollon Hotel was

crammed with projects and visitors wishing to take a look at

them.

Panel of judges identified three competition winning proj-

ects, whose authors received monetary prizes established by

the Union of Architects of Georgia and copies of fundamental

publication on contemporary Georgian architecture, issued by

STYLE Magazine. Competition winners were Vakhtang Tabatadze

and Tamar Alkhazashvili, Robbie Getiashvili and Nika Maisuradze

sketch projects – according to the jury, their projects were most

efficient in terms of considering climatic and natural conditions

of the project site, technical and functional relevance and cre-

ative approach.

As usual, SKIA enabled architects to find application both

for creative thinking and sports activity – the program of Bakuriani

meeting incorporated a competition in giant slalom skiing,

organized for 43 participants in several age and sex categories.

The winner among male student skiers was Misho

Shamatava, who surprised everyone with his passionate desire

to win; runners-up were Murman Iashvili and Beka Dvali.

Female student skiers’ competition was won by 1. Anna

Kartozia, 2. Nana Lekveishvili and 3. Nono Kvitsinashvili (all three

– daughters of well-known Georgian architects).

Still another victory among women skiers was achieved

by architect Natasha Kvartskhava, who was awarded a tourist

trophy, established by the Union of Architects of Georgia in mem-

ory of Alik Japaridze – miniature sculpture by Giorgi Kvatsabaia.

Second and third places were won by Maia Mirziashvili and

Maka Dzidziguri, whose results were just tenths of seconds worse

than those of the first prize winner.

Prizes in the competition for male skier architects under

40 got distributed as follows: 1. Zura Chochia, 2. Sandro Iashvili

and 3. Luka Chkhaidze. All three showed surprising valor; as

expected, the more experienced sportsman took the upper hand

in their struggle.

Competition for male skier architects aged 40 to 50 was

won by Giorgi Kartozia (a.k.a. “Qu’est-ce que c’est”), who will

keep for still another year Alik Kartozia tourist trophy – figure

of Ashot Kuropalates standing on the skis, sculpted by Gia

Japaridze. The second and third places were claimed by Kote

Iashvili and Irakli Maskhulia.

Traditionally, the largest tension was noticeable among male

skier architects over 50. This competition was won by Gia

Bakhsoliani, director of electric installation company “Insta”, who

at the same time was the general sponsor of the tournament.

He was followed by hereditary skier Kakha Chochia and Irakli

Gamkrelidze (Gerko).

Apart from trophies intended for sports competition win-

ners, organizers had set aside a number of prizes for other par-

ticipants of SKIA meeting-seminar. One of such prizes was a

cloisonne enamel medallion by architect David Chkheidze

(Chkhira), which was passed to Natia Mikeladze, manager of

architectural-urban planning programme operated by Goethe Institut.

Memorable prizes were awarded to architect Gogi Jgenti,

author of SKIA 2010 poster; to film director Nikusha Akhvlediani,

who is creating a new movie about SKIA; to Pavle Dzindzibadze,

the oldest participant of SKIA skiing tournament, and many oth-

ers.

We would like to specially mention the prize established

by STYLE Magazine – fundamental publication on contempo-

rary Georgian architecture – which was awarded to winners of

skiing tournament in all categories and to authors of the best

student sketch projects.

Prizes and presents passed to laureates

and best nominees of Architectural Award

2009 greatly differed from the awards, dis-

tributed to competition winners in the previ-

ous years by competition sponsors, support-

ers and partner companies of the Architects’

Club. One of the most important and impres-

sive awards was established by Italian

Company “Representative of Herbovital 2 in

Tbilisi ”, which took Architectural Award 2009

winners to a specially organized workshop

in Italy.

The workshop lasted from December 7

to December 14. It is pleasing that for the

first time in 2009 “Representative of Herbovital

On February 2 2010 a new public school was launched in thecenter of Borjomi by President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili.Presentation ceremony was attended by the Dimitri Shashkin,Minister of Education and Science of Georgia and other officials.During his speech, President of Georgia gave a high evaluation toarchitectural values of the new school.

This story actually began in 2007, when the Ministry of Educationand Science of Georgia announced architectural competition on cre-ation of 11 school project designs to be built in different regions ofthe country under I. Gogebashvili Program. The number of entriessubmitted to the organizing committee reached 160, which speaksabout considerable professional interest. Among other winners of thecompetition, Tengiz and Giorgi Makharashvili were awarded two firstprizes and one special prize. As a result, they were given a right torealize their projects in Borjomi and Jugaani Village of Signagi District.

Two years later, public school construction was finalized in RustaveliStreet, Borjomi, and Jugaani Village school will be finished in abouta month.

Considering the small size of available plot, designing of theschool for Borjomi was connected with certain difficulties. However,the architects succeeded in finding an efficient solution.

Main architectural components of the resulting construction –semicircular and rectangular blocks combined and rhythmically inter-rupted with tilted roofs, wide window openings, sun blinds, eavesand other construction elements form an integral architectural body.

Project design and construction of the school was funded byWorld Bank and the Government of Georgia. Project assignment

obliged the architects to develop their project incorporating majorEuropean standards, implying differentiation of age groups and recre-ational zones, setting up of innovative classrooms and laborato-ries, modern auditoria and gymnasia, etc. It is important that thisschool – for the first time in Georgia – was equipped with specialramps and two elevators, intended for disabled children.

The building is three-level; its ground floor contains a largeentrance hall, offices and classrooms for junior grade pupils withautonomous access. A separate ground floor construction containsgymnasium and canteen. The entrance hall and recreation areasare immediately connected with a semicircular open inner court-yard, enabling outdoor recreation. First floor of the school buildingmostly consists of classrooms, laboratories and rooms for inde-pendent studies. Second floor, apart from classrooms, also hous-es auditorium and library.

The territory around the school was landscaped and providedwith artificial lighting.

High quality of the construction is the result of efficient coop-eration between the authors, contractors, Municipal DevelopmentFoundation and the Ministry of Education and Science.

On the whole, the realized school building with its planning,spatial and architectural solution seamlessly merged into the sur-rounding landscape. Flexible design of facades, carefully matchedtextures and colors of the construction materials further increasedthe efficiency of this architectural project.

Identity of the

Rational and the

AestheticThis residential house has been designed by architects Manana Khvedeliani, Nugzar

Khvedeliani, David Sulkhanishvili..

Balance of rational and aesthetic are the key principles, underpinning the design,

created without any excessive experiments, special effects or superficial architectural

decorations. Obviously, the authors did not give himself up to aesthetics for aesthet-

ics sake only. Design, built upon the habits, lifestyle, characters of a specific family,

is a peaceful, comfortable house, and not a show-

room or modern art museum. The interior is absolutely isolated from the outer

world

and opens up onto four inner courtyards, of which one contains a greenhouse.

Integrity and harmony of the house are greatly due to its efficient planning solu-

tion. Open

and closed spaces are integrated by themes, highlighting the general style of the

house. Lighting, colors, tastefully matched textures and furniture further highlights indi-

viduality of the house without pointing out to any transient fashion trend. Each frag-

ment of this unusually comfortable living space radiates spirituality and invites to rel-

Flexible image of this public interior (Bar-

Restaurant ,,#55 Leselidze str,,) evokes asso-

ciations with very familiar but seemingly con-

troversial prototypes – modernism and avant-

garde, functionalism and decorativism (with-

out any trace of pop design, though), brought

together in one melting pot to produce a high-

ly artistic, refined interior. This commonly pro-

fessional kaleidoscope looks surprisingly inno-

vative and ingenious, heating the imagination

of art gourmands with its difference from all

they know and are used to. The point is that

Otar Vepkhvadze's design is based on oppor-

tunist eclectics, which enables her to fill an

Interior of conceptual design clothes shop

Prive (La bibliotheque) launched in Paliashvili

str. in Tbilisi, has been designed by architects

Irakli Abashidze, Otar Nemsadze, Dimitri

Shapakidze ("Laboratory of architecture #3"

Ltd.).

To create a positive environment, required

for promotion of high quality brands, the design-

ers created a modern interior space with clear-

cut architectural graphics, original choice of

furniture and contrasting colors. The style of

the shop interior – industrial post-modernism

design – is as free and uninhibited as that

of the clothes it features.

Unexpected design touches add lightness

and comfort to the public space. Stylistic integri-

ty of the interior does not subdue individual-

ity and functionality of constituent parts; on

the contrary, their diversity leaves the impres-

sion of weightlessness. All elements of the

space contribute to the general feeling of free-

dom. A diverse palette of constructional and

decorative details is applied to visually increase

the interior and highlight originality of constant-

ly changing clothes collections exhibited on

the shelves and racks.

The authors have succeeded in design-

ing a highly comfortable space, standing as

a proof to their refined taste and urban think-

City Club

This public interior (in old Tbilisi) described in this arti-

cle features an original composition. A range of various

geometric mobile forms highlights flexibility and diversity

of the volume. The project is created by architect Natia

Kariauli.

The client chose not to intervene into the process of

interior decoration, so that the designer was completely

free to realize her creative ideas.

The unusual public environment catches the eye with

its visual lightness and graphical flexibility of the shapes.

Main architectonic groups are very conveniently linked with

each other. The atmosphere of the interior is airy and unin-

hibited. Constructional lightness of large masses is reiter-

ated by minor design elements. A noteworthy feature of

tiful district of Tbilisi, in Rustaveli awe. Interior of the restaurant and decorative

Meat Cafe designed by architect Elene Tsitsishvili is

built up on the effect of pleasant unexpectedness.

Original compositions, articles and accessories are

distributed within the space in accordance with definite

rules, by large defining the general character of the

atmosphere. The interior is filled with an array of inter-

esting themes, and this is the key creative principle

underlying its design. The public activity within the inte-

rior is focused on several dominants, though in a non-

localized manner. The visitors, looking at this impro-

vised exposition of decorative articles, are sure to feel

that the aesthetics of modern public interiors should

be based not only on modern-style forms and objects,

InteriorWhen designing interior of a residential place, with an

accentuated stylistic trend, one creates a definite atmosphere,

which will remain unchanged for many years to come, influ-

encing a lifestyle of its inhabitants. Interior of this ressiden-

tial was created by architect Vasil Tokhadze.

Based on his professional experience, the author

designed a refined modern interior with streamlined archi-

tectural graphics and original mosaic of shapes and volumes.

The furniture and accessories have been matched with flaw-

less taste. A wide range of constructional and decorative

elements visually increases the interior, intensifies the shapes

and depth of colors.

Unexpected design strokes add lightness to this resi-

dential space and highlight its comfortable planning. Various

parts of the interior are markedly individual and functional,

though not falling out of the general stylistic theme; zone-

Interior Design

The author of this interior is architect Merab Gujejiani. Considering the

MIZAR TI PREMIA!ATTENTION –

COMPETITION!In 2010, for the first time in Georgia, STYLE

Magazine, Architects’ Club and partner of the Club MIZAR

Company organize a joint competition, dedicated to res-

idential and public spaces, construction, interior and design.

The competition is arranged for architects, designers and

other relevant professionals.

Competition entries should represent realized and unre-

alized projects and ideas involving artificial lighting sys-

tems.

- The competition is meant to identify the most effi-

cient project(s) and architects / designers, contributing to

development of lighting design;

- Competition winner will receive a special prize, estab-

lished by MIZAR;

- Competition nominations have been named by organ-

izer of the event – MIZAR Company.

The competition involves the following nominations:

- Lighting of historical buildings and monuments;

- Lighting of parks, squares, gardens (urban devel-

opment, landscape architecture);

- Temporary lighting projects (temporary exhibition /

presentation spaces, etc);

- Permanent lighting projects (apartments, shops,

offices, commercial centers – interior and exterior light-

ing)

Competition jury consists of professionals, represent-

ing MIZAR, STYLE Magazine and Architects’ Club.

The competition aims at:- Promotion of advanced lighting technologies and

stylistic development in urbanistics, architecture and inte-

rior design and, consequently

- Development of modern concept of residential and

public space;

- Identification of the best projects, incorporating

advanced lighting technologies and design solutions.

Participation in the competition is open to architects

and designers, who develop modern interior design and

architectural stylistics with the help of lighting systems

and generate integrated innovative urban development

proposals.

Competition terms- Competition entries – recently realized projects, urban

development concepts and architectural projects – can

be submitted until September 10, 2010;

- Competition is mostly intended for the profession-

als;

- Competition participants can submit an unlimited

number of entries in different nominations;

Tobia and Afra Scarpa have won many international awards; some of their works are in the

collections of the most important museums in the world.

Competition timeline- Competition entries are evaluated by the jury.

Evaluation and shortlisting of the entries is a two-stage

online process as follows:

Stage 1- The jury selects the best projects in each nomina-

tion from among the competition entries, published at

the website;

- Competition entries are evaluated using a special

code system. Each entry, marked with a unique code,

is publicly available at the competition website;

- Judges rate competition entries online with secret

vote (awarding points from 1 to 10 to each entry);

- The results are automatically summarized to iden-

tify nomination winners;

- Following the end of evaluation process, names

of the project authors are published on the website;

- Members of professional jury have one vote each;

- In case if jury members submit their projects for

participation in the competition, they cannot give marks

to such projects (otherwise their votes become void);

- Projects, selected as a result of the first stage, will

be published in the autumn edition of STYLE Magazine

(October 2010, issue no. 36) and competition website.

Stage 2- Based on distribution of competition points, MIZAR

will review the projects, identified as winners of the first

stage and single out one competition laureate.

- Competition laureate will be announced on November

30 2010; this project will be publicized in the New Year

edition of STYLE Magazine and the competition web-

site.

- Please remember that competition organizers have

On January 20-February 5 2010 Vernissage Gallery

hosted exhibition of Guga Kotetishvili’s and Gogi Okropiridze’s

works.

Georgian public knows Guga Kotetishvili very well.

As regards Gogi Okropiridze, who moved to Austria sev-

eral years ago, he works on metals. For instance, his

composition “Dream Carriage”, belonging to series “Home

and Away”, is made of cans, iron and glass. In the near

future Gogi Okropiridze plans to pay another visit to his

home country and make a better acquaintance with Georgian

art connoisseurs.

The present exhibition mainly consisted of Guga

Kotetishvili’s works, distinguished for their vividness and

original themes. The author was pointedly focused on grape

theme – the interest evoked by a book on viticulture, which

he happened to read some time ago.

According to the author, prior to creation of furniture

with seemingly simple design, looking as if it was assem-

bled from wine boxes, he had to specially process chest-

nut wood in order to give it aged look.

Apart from furniture, decorated with grape-patterned

cushions, the exhibition included several other interesting

objects. Of these, the most curious were two floor lamps

concocted of iron, large wine bottles and grape-patterned

fabric.

Exposition visitors could also see Guga Kotetishvili’s

watercolor, oil and crayon works, including collages and

glass bottles, on which the author reproduced old pho-

Levan Margiani enriched Georgian art with a new type of religious miniature,

in which he combined historical Georgian miniature and embossing techniques.

In Levan Margiani’s works, the main principle of synthesis undergoes a curi-

ous transformation, which the author diversifies by exploring new materials and

techniques, like painting on stone slabs and wood panels, decorative ceramics.

Such modernization of cultural heritage nonetheless incorporates all the rules

of canonical iconography. The artist creates unique works, performed in fine mate-

rials (e.g. silver and gold), which represent a totally new direction in Georgian reli-

gious art, based on cultural traditions and canonical laws, so important for reli-

gious art, but also considering modern art achievements. In other words – new,

original art is created.
