Developed countries are shifting their focus to the defense and high-tech cutting-edge industries to

boost economic growth, on the backdrop of rapid development of global economies and high-tech

sectors. The rare earth industry is gaining traction as they are used in more than 30 sectors related to

defense and high-technology due to their excellent photoelectric properties.

Development of new materials, electronic information industry, new energy, aerospace, as well as

energy conservation and environmental protection sectors has greatly bolstered demand for rare

earth products around the world, and this will result in a decline of global and Chinese rare earth

output in the future.

Global and Chinese rare earth output trended higher during 1998-2014, but slid during 2014-2017

and rose again in 2018. In recent years, with more focus directed to the strategic value of rare earth,

the Chinese government has taken measures to prevent blind and uncontrolled mining of rare earth,

strictly limiting output. This, coupled with the coronavirus pandemic, is expected to weigh on rare

earth output over the next two years.

At present, China’s rare earth permanent magnet material market faces surplus of medium and low-

end capacities, as well as challenges and difficulties In production, research and investment.
