The Diamonds and Rust exhibition byMoniek Schrijer took place earlier thismonth at the Chinese European Art

Center (CEAC).Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Ms.

Schrijer is currently taking courses in jewel-ry and printmaking in Whitireia, New Zea-land. She recently also wrapped up athree-month residency at the CEAC. All theartwork in her current exhibition was createdduring her time in Xiamen.

While there are no actual diamonds inthe exhibition, Ms. Schrijer said that the Dia-monds and Rust title is designed to compelaudiences to think about the meaning of val-ue. "I wanted a thought-provoking title,”shesaid. 'The juxtaposition of Diamonds and

Rust is like good and bad, raising the ques-tion of which is better," she said. "Manymay suggest that diamonds are good but Ithink rusted things are better because for methey are cooler."

The exhibition is centered around sculp-tural jewelry and all the items are wearable.Ms. Schrijer called her designs "art jewelry"and she hopes that her work pushes jewelryinto new realms. The transformative poten-tial of materials and objects fuel her practic-es, she added.

Ms. Schrijer's works are typically fash-ioned from materials with meaning and sheoften utilizes used or abandoned objects.She describes her use of repurposed materi-als as an effort to resist a throw away cul-ture. "Our generation has developed athrow-away society," she said. "I try to add

as little as I can in my work because there isenough stuff in the world," she added.

Ms. Schrijer emphasized the impor-tance of multicultural and intellectual ex-change. In her work produced in Xiamen,she fused Chinese cultural elements into herwork in the form of Chinese zodiac charac-ters, ancient coins and classical windowtreatments.

While Ms. Schrijer displays and sellsher artwork, she also teaches visual arts toprimary and high school students, a dualidentity that she describes as a balance be-tween reality and dream. "I sell in Europebut I don't rely on it and I don't want to relyon it, it is too stressful," she said.

Still, design is more than a hobby. "Iam thinking jewelry all the time, it addsmeaning to my life."

CEAC hosts Diamondsand Rust art exhibition

"I found a lot of rawmaterial on the beach that Iwill take to New Zealand toalter and transform for mynext exhibition," said Ms.Schrijer. Her upcoming exhi-bition in Wellington is tenta-tively entitled Results of Xia⁃men Residency.

with daily life. She incorporates "patterns, food packaging, thereplica and the mass produced," notions and elements that areinfused into her creations. She explained that she uses theseitems to reflect upon the past, to imagine the future and to cele-brate the everyday.
