Hecket t NamedRunner ofthe Month

Richard (Dick) Heckett. of Yorktown, has been named July s Runner of theMonth, by Dan Caffrey, TRRC President.

Runner of the Month is a non competitive award created to recognize thee f f o r t s o f T R R C m e m t ^ e r s w h o ,through their efforts, demonstrate asense of well toeing toward the sportand the general public m particular.

Heckett, who has been runningsome eighteen months, took up thesport because, as he admits, to beingoverweight and "...well out of shape."As a middle-aged, two pack of cigarettes a day jogger, Heckett had mucht o o v e r c o m e .

"At first I found that I couldn't run aquarter of a mile without stopping,"s a i d t h e c a n n i n e o f fi c e r . H o w e v e r ,kicking the habit and perseverancepaid off. A milestone was reachedwhen he eventually completed the twomile Mohansic State Park Loop witho u t a b r e a k .

As the months passed the two milesg a v e w a y t o t h r e e , t h e n f o u r , a n dmore, to the point where the 45-year-old father of four has now progressedto a sixty mile, 6 day a week schedule.

As the jogging gave way to competitive running, Heckett showed he was arunner with a difference. Whereas,most new joggers enter the two milefun runs. Heckett 's init ial venture wasa t e n m i l e r o a d r a c e . H e fi n i s h e d ,proud as the proverbial peacock, averaging just over eight minutes a mile.

Now thirty five pounds lighter, theTaconic Road Runner is now contemplating the ultimate: the Marathon,t w e n t y s i x m i l e s t h r e e h u n d r e d a n deighty five yards. If determination andpast performances are anything to goby. then come Octotjer, Dick Heckettwill be putting another feather in hisc a p .

To Load or Not to Load,That is the Question

As a teenage fanatic of track andcross country, 1 had a very good anddear friend who was the best road runner in Scotland for a number of years. His races ranged from 10 to 20 miles. His init ial attempt at a marathoncame in the Scottish championships. At the twenty-two mile mark he wasahead by over five minutes and feelinggreat. He never finished. I rememberhim telling me later that all of a sudden he felt bad with three miles to go.He struggled on. but by the twenty-fi f t h r r - i l e w a s s o w e a k h e w a s u n a b l eto step from the road onto the sidewalk. He attributed it to poor pacing, but in reality it was, for both of us, ourinitial experience of a runner "hittingt h e w a l l . "

Simply put, the average runner's ,body contains 2000 glycogen (storedcartxjhydrale) calories. When running^a marathon the hiody uses up lOO of'these calories for every mile run. Sincethere are 26 miles to run this leaves adeficiency of 600 calories. Somethinghas to give.

Of course, it is much more complexthan that, ^me runners are able tofinish without exhausting their supplyof glycogen calories and, therefore, don't experience "the wall." Others, byrunning tielow their maximum racepace, may not expend their "fuel" andalso avoid such unpleasantries.

However, in an attempt to finish thedistance and maximize performance,m o s t r u n n e r s t a k e s o m e k i n d o fprecaution. This done by adding - orstoring - as many additional glycogen-/calories as the body will hold. (Theidea is to have surplus calories onhand so that they will be availablewhen needed.)

Glycogen calories are obtained byeating and dinking foods that are highin carbohydrates. Italian foods, bread, cakes, candies, fruit, pancakes, waffles, soft drinks, beer, or if you prefer,Brandy Alexanders, are examples oft h e s e .

The act of adding these foods inexcess is called "loading." Cartiohy-drate loading is accomplished by several different methods. The most simpleform is merely to increase the intakeof carbohydrates to the present diet. Some runners prefer to take a longrun (18-22 miles) the week prior to therace - thus depleting the existing supply .-. then add cartjohydrates from

. that day until race day. A third approach is to limit carbohydrate intakewhile continuing to train. This also de-

supply after which the runn e r c o n

sumption.The fourth, and most comrni^iy^^

known, is a combination of the lasttwo methods. In this depletion andreloading process, the theory isanalagous to a wet sponge.

When wet. it is difficult to add morewater to the sponge. However, whensqueezed and then submerged, thesponge absorbs more water than itoriginally held. Similarly, when thebody is drained and deprived of themuch needed glycogen calories duringthe depletion phase, it reacts by storing the surplus calories it receives during the reloading phase.

In this approach the runner takes along run seven days prior to the race, then for the next three days limits himself to an extremely low calorie intake(depletion), and for the last three daysreverses direction by engaging in highcarbohydrate intake (reloading).

But does it work? And is i t recommended?

Most experts agree that depletionand reloading can be dangerous. Physically it can be dangerous if done toooften, that is, if it is done for eve^marathon and four or more are run ina year. (For sure there are proponentswho will argue that running four ormore marathons a year is physicallydangerous regardless of depletion andreloading.) Physcologically it can bedangerous, also. Avoiding carbohydrates is not the most pleasant ofchores. Personally, it drove me up thewall On the last evening of depletion 1remember eating two steaks, then twohamburgers without buns, and still being hungry two hours later. Bob Bur-bank's experience was to jump out ofbed at four o'clock Thursday morninga n d d e v o u r h a l f a c h o c o l a t e c a k ebefore he starved to death.

Dan Caffrey loads up on the ca-bohydrates, but is not a devotee ofthree day depletion phase, because cfi t s adve rse e f f ec t s . How ie Bashan -similarly, avoids it like the plague, andstresses the unfavorable psycholog'ca'accompaniments.

With only two marathons under mybelt I am far from t>€ing a compef'rntauthority. In both cases, I must saythat I did engage in the deplefton-reloading phase as outlined above. Inboth cases I encountered no negativeresults, so, at this point, I have to assume it had a positive action.

Presently, I have two strong beiiefsabout marathons as they apply to me.One has to do with mileage and training, and the other has to do with loading. Insofar as the latter is concerned,I wouldn't dream of running twenty-sixmiles without depletion and loading.

There is no argument concerningthe depletion phase. It was the firsttime in my life I had to diet: it was easier to quit smoking. Barbara Streis-sand says. "What's too painful torememt)er, we simply choose to forget." To the point I like to rememoerthe pleasantries of the loading phase.

While depletion may be on thedevi l ish side, reloading is s impiyheaven. Starting in with pancakes andsyrup, and continuing right throughwith milk shakes, banana splits, MiikyWays, pineapple upside-down cake, pasta, pastries and plenty of Pabst, Ireally make a p-i-g of myself. America! What a wonderful country.

An article in the August edition ofR u n n e r ' s W o r l d s t a t e s t h a t s t u d i e sdone in the United States and Swedenhave shown that carlx)hydrate loadingdoes work. Which specific method iscorrect? Who knows?

I remember watching golfers holdingtheir putters at arms length, with oneeye closed, while lining up their putt. What it accomplished was beyond me.Fortunately. I had the opportunity toask a professional golfer. "There'snothing specific that one can put theirfinger on", he said, "but as longthe golfer thinks it's doing fiWn somegood, iheo -it has its purpose!"" Likew ise , ou r runn ing gu ru , Geo rgeSheehan, M.D., tells us that the faithalone that patients have in their doctoror remedy can produce improvementin 60-70 percent of ailments.

Most runners will agree to sometype of loading, but which Is for whomis debatable. Mind over mattv may bea more determing factor than tk«« biochemical breakdown and physiolog-:aVapplication themselves.

In conclusion it would appear thatnot to load is to ask for troub e.

To deplete or not to deplete? Thatapparently, is the question.
