Ready, Set, Go, and so starts the term of Fredy Low.

I would like to start my first column by thanking Ed,"Myles O'Rhodes" McLaughlin for his dedication and commitmentto the success of TRRC as your president for the past two years.1 trust that with your help we can continue the great reputation"TACONIC brings to the local running scene.

1 would also, at this time, like to welcome and introducethe other members of "the board," your Vice President, SteveQuinn; back as your Treasurer (one more time) Richie Adamski;and your Secretary, Jim McDermott; and, because he just can't getenough of this, returning as your Race Coordinator, Myles O.

You will note by each officer's name is a respectivephone number. Call us if we can be of assistance, that's whatwe're here for. Another little addition is the listing andrecognition of our former presidents, Dan, Own and John. Don'tcall any of them! (just kidding). Having said that, let's get downto the business at hand.

A few new positions are being added to assist the club. The first is an Equipment Manager; John Hallinan has offered hisservices and garage and will be responsible for the inventory of allour "stuff." More on this later. The second is a VolunteerCoordinator, for which we need a volunteer to coordinatevolunteers, so to speak.

I would like to thank Susan Then and Brian Wheaton fortheir assistance in obtaining the club's new monthly meetinglocation, "The Carriage House at Teatown." Has a nice sound toit, huh? Hmmmm, see you at the Carriage House..., starting inFebruary, that is (see separate article.)

My predecessor's final thoughts in the last issue of TRLunder Small Regrets Department was placing names with faceson our membership list. There are some 600 of you out there andI'm putting you all on notice. 1 do not want the same regret at theduration of my term. Don't be shy, come up and say Hi!

As a member of TRRC, it's a given, you like being arunner (why it's our middle name). It's not necessary for you tobe a fast runner, or an experienced marathoner, only that youenjoy running and, if given the choice, you'd rather do it witfsome friends. And, that my friends, is what Taconic is all aboutThere is always someone to run with at FDR Park on an>weekday night, especially Wednesdays at 5:30 P.M., or come joirthe "pump house gang" on Saturday mornings at 7:30 A.M. foithe infamous javelins of gold in and around Teatown and theCroton Reservoir and, of course, the pancakes meeting at the locadiner, which is probably the real reason we get out of a warm beeon a Saturday morning in the first place.

Happy 1993, make it a PR year!See ya' out there, Fredy Low

November 6, 1992Dear Ed,

Larry and I really enjoyed the NY Marathon - itwas a great day. lie really appreciated the warmthof the IRRC people - I told him you guys were abarrel of laughs.

Warmest regards,Frank Stadulis

Ed,November 8, 1992

It was a real treat watching you and all theTaconics running the New York Marathon, Kevinand I tried to root everyone home. One runnerstopped and said, "You are the only cops cheeringfor us runners." Since we both personally knew 60-80runners (maybe more actually) our interest was a lotkeener than the average patrolman's, which was tostay warm and make some overtime. We hope youenjoyed the Marathon as much as we did.

Also enclosed is a photo from one of the speedw o r k o u t s .

See you at tlie Yorktown lOK.

To t h e " 9 0 " T R R C ' e r s w h o r a n N e w Yo r k t h i syear, congrats!

There you were, coming around that finalturn in Central Park, and up that last little hill, andright in front of you, the most grandiose finish linein all the world. You cross over, a feeling ofaccomplishment runs through your entire being. Forthe next 45 minutes or so you wonder around withyour metal wrapped in a space blanket trance, looking for a familiar face to share your triumphwi th .

Then by some miracle you find yourself onthe seventh floor, opening the door to "716" and forthe party planners, you're crossing that line all overagain. Welcome and congratulations. Whether it'syour first or twenty-first New York, there's nothinglike having a place to lay-out with your friends, good food, cold beer, and a hot shower (notnecessarily in that order).

Every time the door opened, another smilin'TRRC face would enter to the cheers of the roomfull of friends and supporters. Alyssa Lifrieri hadthe unofficial shower record of 18:15, but when youaverage in her marathon time of 3:11 she was thef a s t e s t f e m a l e - T R R C e r a n d F - 8 3 o v e r a l l ! H e r

running mate, Dan The Moffitt-man, one week backfrom a 3:06 D.C. also ran a 3:11, and has hiscertificate to prove it. Chuck Creel at 2:56 openedthe door with his proud father's arm around him;Rich Nash at 3:30 came in with the realization thathe was now a marathoner. Brian Wheaton at 3:38was accompanied by the always smiling HowieSolow at 3:40. Myles O'Rhodes at 3:42 ran in justin front of Rudi Einhom at 3:46. Richie Adamski3:57, Denise Friendly 3:58, and Donny Lutrick3:59 all came in like they just won $500.00 dollars, and you know what, they did with the 53 otherTRRCers under 4:00 hours.

The Seventeenth Anniversary

Sunday, October 25, 1992 - 9 a.m. Washington, D.C

A Chronicle by CalvinOn Saturday, October 24th at 0907 hours, the Taconic Team party van embarked from base camp Downing Park.We (Dan Moffitt, Don Lowry, Vinny Juliano, Howie Solow, Dave O'Toole & Jim McDermott) headed west on route202, but before half a mile is travelled, we have our first of many "directional discussions." Take our namesakesouth, says one. I usually go Bear mountain and down the PIP, says another. Driver Dan MofiBtt dispatches hisdecision and down we descend to the Daily Bagel where we dismount for some dough and decaff. At 0937 horns, atmile marker 14 on the PIP, as Dave O'Toole reads the Daily News and does the crossword puzzle, Vinny Juliano isoverheard saying "You have to learn to relax." His friendly advice will be repeated by the others many times on thisthree day weekend. At 1003 hours, we make the left to 95 south. At 1014 hours, Dan gets a ticket (a toll ticket) andwe're officially on the N.J. turnpike. At 1055 hours, we pit stop at the Molly Pitcher service area. Dave O'Tooletakes the helm, Jim McDermott is shot gun navigator. As we gas up, we chip in $10 bucks each. Our kitty balancequickly becomes $60.00. The petrol total comes to $18.85, and as Dave flips our attendant a dollar of his ownmoney for cleaning the windshield, the gas pumper responds "Another dollar to bet on Freddy Lo." Tempus Fugitand at 1522 hours we arrive at the Doubletree hotel race headquarters. While looking for a parking spot, we runinto Steve Mackay, who, with his wife Tina and daughter Rachel, had travelled down the day before. For a shortwhile now its the usual scene. Front desk registration, check out the room, meet back in the lobby, prerace packetpickup, team registration, the exposition, buy those pre-race pasta dinner tickets, a cat nap back in our rooms andthen dinner. This years pasta dinner was a rigatoni-less rip off when compared to previous pasta plates. TheTaconic spirit can not be suppressed however, and as we dine with other runners, observe the arrival of the RoyalNavy running team dressed in their royal running suits (remember the beak on that one guy?), and wait for Dan tofinish that second slab of apple pie, we sit right through the highlight of the pre-race activities, the keynote addressby Dr. George Sheehan. We relax in our carbo-loadedness and goof on those who, with plates piled high withpisghetti can't find an empty table. We group contemplate on the most important event to take place tomorrow. Canyou buy beer on Sunday in D.C.? We get while the getting's good. The party van vacates its spot. Surely it will bethere when we return. Rain, lightning, thunder. We drive to a deli we could have walked to. The day's kitty is spent. It reconciles to: gas $18.85, tips $1.00, tolls/bridges $8.10, beer $27.86! The perfect ending to a perfect day. NOT!They won't let us back in the parking garage. How can it be full? We look for a spot on the street. We U-tum. Theparty van interval trains. We pace. We draft. We make our return move on an underling gatekeeper with visions of agreen card who allows us to look for our old spot. We retire to our rooms, turn the clocks back to EST & watch thefinal game of the series. Sunday, October 25th, at 0715 hours, Taconic Team meets in the lobby. We walk 10minutes to the Pentagon. We shuttle bus to the Marine Corps War Memorial. We group photo. We wait on thetoidy line. We baggage check. We hydrate. At 0830, we walk to the start and get caught in a traversing mass ofrunners who are controlled by Marine lieutenants walking backwards toward the starting line. We are a verycompliant thirteen thousand until behind us a section of orange fencing is trampled a la N.Y. The would be frontrunners re-enact a 3 stooges retreat as the bull homed message "Stay in line" is barked by an enlisted volunteer.Taconic is five rows deep from the start. Its 0840, The National Anthem. The lieutenants make a left face &forward march. A starters pistol and a Marine Corps 105 MM Howitzer are fired simultaneously. In seventeenannual MCMs no one has ever heard the starters pistol. Its 0900 hours. The preparation phase is over and we'relean, we're mean, we are a mnning machine. We're doing it. "Airborne" Don Lowry leads Taconic Team by 30yards. Vinny Juliano, Howie Solow, Steve Mackay, Dave O'Toole & Jim McDermott run together. Dan Moffitt is inthe vanguard. Spectators yell "Taconic!", "Go Taconic", "Looking good Taconic." Each of us mns his own race.

Mother with baby in park Image One: mother casually dressed, skirt and sweater, baby in four-wheeled stroller under pastel-colored blanket, mobile, binky. Mother andbaby in park Image Two: mother in tights and Nike Skylons. Smallish, strong and lithe.Stroller of the three-wheeled persuasion, blanketed, behatted but not begloved, since heprefers his hands free for cookies on the fly. Meet Nicholas Grace, age 16 months, hadhis marathon mom Conni, training together for their first New York Marathon.

While Conni, in between baby-sitting by day, waking up for Nicholas at night, trainingin the afternoon, and preparing dinner in the evening, never abandons her easy-goingoutlook or sunny disposition, she worries about whether her mileage is suflicient, but shedoesn't invest it with the importance of the state of the national economy. She frets thatshe's probably not getting enough rest, especially after running 20 miles with the flucoming on, but she's determined to make the best of it.

So now it's a week to go and it's time for your well-looked-after family to look afteryou. Climb into some baggy soft sweats, put your feet up and pick up your remote. Havea big bowl of popcorn and a cold beer. Your training's all done and your race will befi n e .

P.S. Conni Grace ran her first marathon in 3:45.

I remember a scene in the film "King Kong" where Ann Darrow and Jack Driscoll arefleeing from Kong, running, stumbling and falling through the underbrush. Behind themwe hear Kong relentlessly crashing after them. Ann and Jack are ragged and desperate, trying to reach the safety of the wall before Kong catches them.

I remember a scene from the Club Cross Country Championship at Blue MountainReservation last November: after running together for most of the race, I put a moveon Tony Galfano and put about ten yards on hum with a half-mile to the finish. In theclosing yards I could sense Tony closing. Tagged and desperate, I felt Tony was Deathhimself, in relentless pursuit. With a final burst. King Kong Galfano let out a spine-chilling yell and held it to the finish where he beat me by a half step.

Melodramatic? YUP! A cross-country tableau? Definitely! If running is a basic activity pared down to its essentials, then (for those who love it)

cross-country is positively primal. Training runs can be pastoral. Races can be like adesperate charge, with a heightened sense of speed and closeness with the competition. It's one thing to shuffle over the closing mile of a lOK road race; it is another matter topick up your feet and put them down over the closing mile of a tough trail race. If youare a cross-country and trail-running aficionado, or think you may become one, then the"mudders and grunters" would be a great way to begin or resume another dimension ofthe sport.
