Virginia-class submarines are designed from the keel up for the full range of 21st century mission requirements, including anti-submarine and surface ship warfare and special operations support. These submarines excel in littoral and open- ocean environments and collect intelligence critical to irregular warfare efforts with advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. At least 20 ships have been named after the state of Vermont, its cities, places, and people. The Battle of Lake Champlain, also known as the Battle of Plattsburgh, ended the final invasion of the northern states during the War of 1812. Fought shortly before the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, the American victory at the Battle of Lake Champlain denied the British leverage to demand exclusive control over the Great Lakes and any territorial gains against the New England states. Born in Montpelier, VT, Lt. Bill C. Fitzgerald was a U.S. Navy officer killed in action during the Vietnam War when he came under heavy attack by two Viet Cong battalions. Fitzgerald, along with three others, provided covering fire during the attack so civilians were able to escape. As the situation deteriorated, Fitzgerald ordered the remaining defenders to retreat while he used arms fire to cover their escape. Fitzgerald received the Navy Cross posthumously for his role in fighting off a Viet Cong attack. PEOPLE Born in Montpelier, VT, Adm. George Dewey (1837-1917) became the “hero of Manilla Bay” after achieving a crushing naval victory over the Spanish fleet in the waters west of Manila in the Philippines during the Spanish- American War. Dewey’s exploits during the war made him a national hero and brought glory to Vermont. His achievements became part of standard histories of the state. The mission of Navy Operational Support Center White River Junction is to manage, train, equip, support, and assist assigned Navy Reserve units to achieve maximum mobilization readiness for augmentation of the U.S. Navy.
