Automatic Light Control/Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)

Your Grand Am is equipped withAutomatic Light Control (ALC) for nightdriving and Daytime Running Lamps(DRL) for daytime driving. The ALC acti-vating full exterior lighting — includingheadlamps and instrument panel lighting— is the same as activating the head-lamp switch yourself. The DRL systemactivates your headlamps at reducedintensity when the ignition is ON, theheadlamps switch is OFF, the shifter isnot in Park and the parking brake isreleased. When it’s dark enough out-side, the DRL will turn off and the vehi-cle’s full intensity headlamps and park-ing lamps will activate. When it’s brightenough outside, the full intensity head-lamps and parking lamps will go off andthe reduced intensity headlamps (DRL)will come on.

Delayed Headlamps OffYour vehicle’s Delayed Headlamp Offfeature provides illumination when exit-ing your Grand Am. When you turn theignition to OFF (while in the Automatic

Light Control mode), the headlamps willremain on as courtesy lighting for 20seconds. The headlamps will turn offautomatically after 20 seconds with nofurther action on your part. Overriding the SystemsIf you prefer not to use Automatic LightControl, DRL or Delayed HeadlampsOff, you can temporarily override thesesystems by following these procedures:• Overriding Automatic Light Control

(ALC): Under nighttime lighting condi-tions, activate the parking brake bypulling the hand lever before turningthe ignition ON. Notice that activatingthe parking brake while in ALC willnot override this feature.

• Overriding Daytime Running Lamps(DRL): Under daytime lighting condi-tions, place the shifter in Park or acti-vate the parking brake as describedabove. Note that the DRL will activatewith the parking brake released andthe vehicle speed above 3 mph.

• Overriding Delayed Headlamps Off:With the headlamps ON after the igni-tion is OFF, rotate the headlamp stalkswitch from OFF to PARKLAMPS toOFF to immediately turn off the headlamps.

See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Note: The Automatic Light Control system may temporarily switch yourvehicle’s headlamps and interior panellights — including the radio display — to the nighttime mode when you passthrough a darker ambient condition, such as under a bridge or through a tunnel. When ambient conditionsbrighten, the DRL should be reactivatedwithin one minute.

Fueling Your Vehicle

Never fuel your vehicle while the engineis running, and make sure to reinstallthe fuel cap securely when finished (turnit until it clicks). Either of these situationswould allow fuel to evaporate into theatmosphere and cause the SERVICEENGINE SOON lamp to illuminate. See Section 6 of your Owner Manual.
