If it was not for the Taos FiestaCouncil, I would not have had thisamazing opportunity to be anincredible role model for all younggirls in Northern New Mexico.

So, I would like to thank them forthis joyous commitment they havepresented to me.

This past year I have traveled todifferent places all over NorthernNew Mexico to celebrate their fies-

tas. I have met the most outgoingpeople that have made an impact onmy life as I did theirs.

Also a huge part of this journeyhas been my family. They have beenvery supportive and I would nothave been able to do it withoutthem.

t was anhonor tobe the 2005Reina deTaos. My

experiences as La Reina were won-derful memories that I am going toremember for a long time. I realizedhow important it is to keep our tra-ditions and culture alive. I am veryproud to be part of this culture andto say that I am a Taoseña and thatI was La Reina de Taos, NewMexico. I grew and my life is moreenriched from this experience.

Representing Taos and La Gentewas very rewarding. I met a lot ofgood people and I truly enjoyedparticipating in all the events. Ihope that I can continue to pro-mote our culture. I will tell our young girls that beingLa Reina is a commitment that needs to be taken seri-ously and it will maek you aware of the richness andbeauty of what the Taos fiestas brings to our gentethat continues our wonderful traditions that I am sovery proud of.

I’d like to thank my two Princesas, Maria ElenaMartínez and Krystal Struck, for representing Taos, LaGente and our culture with me. For personal reasons I

could not complete my reign, so Iwould like to especially thankMaria Elena Martínez, whobecame the new Reina.

A special thanks to my familyespecially to my mother, CarmeliaChavez-Villafranca, who assistedme and participated in all theevents. Also I want to thank mymom’s family, my tias and tios thatsupported me during my reign. Icould not have made it withoutyour love and support you all gaveme.

Santa Ana is part of our culture and tradition thatmakes Taos a unique and historical town. We havebeen celebrating the fiestas for centuries, and this year

is our 25th year as an incorporated council.This annual celebration is a time for us to visit with

old friends and make new ones.We of the Fiesta Council would like to wish every-

I would like to welcome each and everyone of you to the Annual Fiestas ofSantiago and Santa Ana.

The Fiestas will be celebrated in TaosTown on July 22 and 23, while here atTaos Pueblo, we will celebrate on July26 and 27, in accordance with our tra-ditions.

The Fiestas are enjoyed by locals andvisitors from across the land. Fiestas are a very festive

time, a time to see old friends and atime to make new friends; it is a timeto enjoy the historic parade, to enjoy“fiesta burgers” and other culinarydelights.

Here at Taos Pueblo we celebratewith our Corn Dances on both days,the 26th and 27th. Everyone is wel-come to observe our age-old dances.

rowing up, Micayla Corral-Jeantete said she has vaguememories about attending theannual Fiestas. However, whatsparks her memory is remem-bering that she always wanted

to be riding in the parade as the Fiesta Queen. Micaylasaid she loves all the wonderful food that can be foundat the Fiestas, but her favorite treat is the funnel cake.She said she has remained a dedicated parade-watch-ing fan, and even though she is not a little girl any-more, she still loves to ride theTío Vivo carousel.

As a young woman of 19years, Micayla said she is proudto be a Taoseña and she knowsshe can represent Taos in a posi-tive way. Micayla admits that thefiestas are a “part of my culture Inever really knew about,” but sheis determined to help “bring themotivation” to learn more aboutthe tradition and keep it alive inthe community. Micayla said shewill not sit by and watch as com-munity members lose the knowl-edge and history of the town’straditions; she wants people tojoin her in representing the Taosculture with pride and respect.

When asked what the role ofFiesta Queen means to her, she said it means being “apositive role model (and a) positive part of Taos.”Taking on the role of Fiesta Queen means “fulfillingthat goal you set for yourself ... (and being) proud ofwhat you’re doing,” she said. Micayla said she wouldencourage every person to become involved with theFiesta tradition because it’s a fun experience and youget to meet so many wonderful people.

Micayla said that she would also love to be a rolemodel in the community, but she has set her sights ontargeting a different group of people. She said shewants to “reach out to everyone,” instead of onlyfocusing on individuals close to her age.

Micayla said that while she does not want to alien-ate any age group from looking to her as a role model,she still would like to “target the kids who have givenup on their culture,” and who say Taos sucks. Micaylasaid she wants to help these kids recognize and appre-

ciate the fact that they get to live in a great communi-ty. Micayla said that if she is crowned Fiesta Queen sheplans to represent Taos as a community whose mem-bers get along with and support each other, and sheespecially wants to prove that the youth in the com-munity want to help make a difference.

It’s important that people in our own community,as well as surrounding communities realize that “we’renot (a town made up of) all bad kids,” she said.Micayla offers people the advice to get involved intheir community, and to embrace every person wholives in the community. She said the best way for anyperson to make a difference is to “get involved ...attempt to make that positive change.”

Micayla Corral-Jeantete was born Feb. 8, 1987. Sheis the daughter of Ted “Bear”Jeantete and Alicia Corral. Hermaternal grandparents areAlfredo Padilla Corral and Hor-tensia Venegas Corral. Herpaternal grandparents are Joséand Teresina Jeantete. She is a2005 graduate of Taos HighSchool, where she served asHonor Society president, as wellas serving on the StudentCouncil and Student Senate.

She attends the University ofNew Mexico, and she plans topursue her career as a pre-school teacher. Micayla enjoysswimming and spending timewith her family and friends. Sheloves listening to the music ofKelly Clarkson and Nickelback,

watching one of her favorite movies “Crash” and read-ing any books written by Rudolfo Anaya.

Micayla said her family members are extremelyimportant to her, but it is her sister, Catrina, who isthe most influential person in her life. Micayla saidthat her sister, who has Down Syndrome, has taughther that a person does not need to spend their lifeworrying, that a person should not let what otherpeople think affect them, and that all people should behappy and thankful to just be themselves. Micayla saidshe is grateful that her parents encouraged her to runfor Fiesta Queen, and she knows that they will alwaysbe there to give her support in whatever she does. Shecredits her parents for teaching her to be proud thather “roots” are in Taos, which has allowed her to fullyappreciate how “tight” the Taos community is.

Micayla also gives credit to her faith in the Catholicreligion. She said her religion plays a big role in herlife and she knows her faith will never let her downduring hard times. She also said her faith has helpedguide her to be a good person, both to herself and toothers.

When asked how she will remember this experi-ence, Micayla said she will look back on it as a fun and

positive experience.“Whether I win or lose, it’s anexperience,” she said,“there’s really no loser in this(competition).” Micayla said it has been an honor tobe part of this tradition, and it has been wonderfulgetting to meet new people from different communi-ties. She said she would like to be remembered as aperson who incorporated everyone in the Fiesta tradi-tion, and who looked at the whole experience with apositive and optimistic attitude.

laying basketball, spendingtime with friends and family,writing poetry and watching“Friends” are just a few ofMindy Julie Trujillo’s favorite

hobbies. Throughout her four years at Taos HighSchool she was a member of the Student Senate, andshe also served as the high school’s yearbook editorand photographer. Mindy, who plans to attend theUniversity of New Mexico in the fall, credits theknowledge she received in her high school Honorsand AP classes for helping her to choose pediatric

nursing as her career.“I’ve always enjoyed coming to the Fiestas ... and I

want to show people how traditional our Fiestas are,”she said. She wants to remind the Taos communitythat the Spanish culture is still very much alive, andthat the annual Fiestas reinforce the town’s traditionsand history. Mindy said that it is a “big honor ... (and)an amazing experience” for her to be representingTaos and the Fiesta tradition. Mindy said she wants tobe a role model for the younger generations in thecommunity, because it is these generations who don’tunderstand or are losing respect for the Spanish cul-ture. Mindy encourages all members ofthe community to be a part of the Fiesta tradition,and offers the advice to always“learn as much as you can aboutyour traditions” because oncethey are forgotten it is a challengeto bring them back. Mindy saidshe will never forget this experi-ence, and will look back on itwith fond memories.

Mindy Julie Trujillo was bornJune 30, 1988. She is the daughterof Evelyn Martínez and RaymondTrujillo. Her stepfather is AllenMartínez. Her maternal grand-parents are the late José AbelEspinoza and Benita Espinoza.Her paternal grandparents areRaymond Trujillo, Sr. and MercyTrujillo. Mindy is 18 years oldand is a 2006 graduate of TaosHigh School.

Mindy said that the mostinspirational people in her life are her parents and heruncle, Darren Córdova. She said her uncle has turnedhis life into a great success, and that her entire familyprovides her with unconditional love and support.

Mindy said that her family “was all on board ... andproud” when she told them she wanted to run forFiesta Queen. She said she is thankful that her parentshave instilled in her a strong sense of responsibility, aswell as teaching her to always “try to help people asmuch as you can.” Mindy also said that her faith in theCatholic religion has helped her throughout her life.

Religion has always beenprominent in her family, andMindy said her strong faith hashelped her through many diffi-cult times in her life.

Mindy shared some finalthoughts about why she wouldlike to be Fiesta Queen. Shebelieves that the role of FiestaQueen includes the duty of“bringing the feeling of respectback to the Fiestas” and repre-senting the Taos community inthe best way possible. Mindyremembers watching theparade when she was little, andthinking that one day she couldbe Fiesta Queen. Mindy saidthat she will look back on thistime in her life as “a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” and

whether she is crowned or not, she hopes that thecommunity will “remember that (she) representedTaos well.”

ver since she was a little girl, MonicaMarie Julianna Coca thought about whatit would be like to be Fiesta Queen.Monica said she thought about getting towear the beautiful dresses and riding in

the parade “every year and every day of the Fiestas.”Monica said her favorite part of the Fiestas is seeing“everybody coming together” to celebrate the tradi-tions of the community. She said growing up aroundthe Fiesta tradition has allowed her to truly under-stand that the “Fiestas are our community’s greatesttradition.” Monica said she would be very proud torepresent the Taos community, and would be honoredto carry on the Fiesta tradition.

Monica said there are several reasons why shewould like to be crowned Fiesta Queen. She said shewants to help bring back some of the fading traditionsof the community, and to learn more about what isincluded in the town’s Spanish culture. What is most

important to Monica is the opportunity to “representour culture, religion (and) hometown.” Monica saidshe also wants to show people that there is nothingwrong with being proud of where you come from,and she wants to help people realize that Taos is oneof the most “unique” communities to live in. Whetheror not Monica is named as Fiesta Queen she said thisexperience will give her the opportunity to be a rolemodel for the younger girls in the community.Teaching these younger generations to always try toachieve their dreams and to pursue every inspirationthat comes into their mind is the goal that Monicasaid she would like to accomplish the most. Monicasaid she would also encourage any girl to run forFiesta Queen because they will leave the experiencewith good memories and a greater appreciation fortheir culture.

Monica, who is 18 years old, said it is crucial to thehistory and culture of Taos that the Fiestas remain anannual event in the community. Monica said it isexciting for her to be part of a tradition that goes back

many generations, and it is an ex-perience that she will never forget.

Monica Marie Julianna Cocawas born May 27, 1988. She is thedaughter of José and Kathy Coca.Her maternal grandparents areLloyd and Barbara Mondragón.Her paternal grandparents are thelate Eluterío and Elizaria Coca.She is a 2006 graduate of TaosHigh School, where she was amember of the Drama Club forthree years. Monica said that sheloves to sing and it is one of herfavorite hobbies. Monica said herfavorite movie is “The Color Pur-ple,” and she loves listening to themusic of Mariah Carey. Monica plans to attend collegeat the University of New Mexico-Taos in the fall, andher career goal is to become an elementary schoolteacher.

When asked who the most influential people inher life are, Monica responded that it is her parentsand her niña, Corine Grant, who has always beenlike a second mother to her. She is especially grateful

for her mother because “she’salways there for me ... (and she)does so much for me.” Monicasaid that her family was veryhappy when she told them shewanted to run for Fiesta Queen,and they have given her nothingbut encouragement and sup-port. Monica said her family hashelped her to recognize that sheshould be proud of herself, andshe said that she would not bethe person she is today withoutthe help of her sister, JessicaCoca, and her friends. Monicaalso said that her faith in theCatholic religion helps herwhenever she is having a hardtime in life, and that faith hashelped her to remain a strong

person.Monica has the following words of advice for the

younger generations in Taos. She said it is importantto always be proud of yourself, your family and theplace that you come from. She added that as a com-munity “we need to try hard to bring back our tra-ditions,” and keep them running strong for manygenerations to come.

as Fiestas de Santiago y Santa Ana is thefocal point for an annual celebration oftradition, culture and community.With private parties happening allacross town, and music, food, paradesand other activites happening in and

around Taos Plaza, it is one of the most popular andimportant events in Taos.

Given the scope of the event, it’s little wonder that ittakes a tremendous effort to make the fiesta, and allthe related events and activities, run smoothly. Therewas a time when it was a struggle each year to findpeople willing to volunteer enormous amounts oftime to make the fiesta happen, but 25 years ago,things changed for the better.

That is when the Fiesta Council was formed andincorporated, thus creating valuable continuitythroughout the years. This year’s fiesta is dedicated tothat anniversary and the years of service of those onthe council, both past and present.

A number of people have served on the councilover the years, but some, including current presidentLiz Peralta and her husband Alfred, have served the

longest out of today’s council. Liz said her husband,and her husband’s cousin, Robert, were the ones whoput it together way back in 1981.

The all-volunteer council works almost year-round,with things getting increasingly hectic in the weeksbefore the fiesta.

“I keep saying, ‘This is my last year,’” Liz said,laughing. It’s possible that threat doesn’t hold muchweight anymore, since she’s served on the councilsince its inception.

Even when things are especially frantic and stress-ful, Liz said walking around the plaza and seeing somany people enjoying themselves makes it worth it.

The rationale behind creating the council to runthe fiesta was simple.“This has been a tradition forcenturies, so we can’t just let it die,” Liz said.

Liz jokes that she’s not getting any younger, but sheadded with more seriousness that she would love tosee some younger blood on the council. It’s difficult tofind people who are willing to make such a large timecommitment, especially among younger Taoseños.

Many people don’t realize just how much workgoes into the fiesta each year, but think of it: Three

days worth of live entertainment, vendors setting upshop on Taos Plaza, the parades and other activities.

That’s not even counting the months leading up tothe fiestas, which includes seeking out and choosingcandidates for the Royal Court; three young girls, oneof whom will be named La Reina. Vangie Romero is incharge of the court candidate process.

There is the fiesta pageant, in which the three candi-dates perform, and from which judges make the choicesfor La Reina and Las Princesas. There is the Fiestacita,that takes place a couple weeks before the fiesta itself.

Then there is the main event, or really events. Threedays worth of activities. All the live musical acts needto be found and scheduled. This year, Elma Torres wasin charge of that large feat.

But after that, the council can finally take a breakuntil next year, right?

Not by a long shot. The Fiesta Court goes into fullswing, attending fiestas in other parts of the state,making a presence at major functions in town, thusfulfilling their role as cultural ambassadors.“There’s alot of running around,” Liz said.

The council doesn’t do all of this without help. Thelocal Kiwanis Club organizes the fiesta parade, and theOptimist Club runs the children’s parade. Members ofthe Lions Club runs the venerable carousel, Tio Vivo.The council is very grateful to those groups, as well asthe town of Taos, which supports the fiesta in severalways, which includes providing funds to help offsetthe great expense of the events.

Council members do get the change to actuallyenjoy the results of all their hard work, but underlyingall of that is a deep sense of responsibility.

he end of July brings thoughts ofthe Taos Fiestas into the minds ofmany locals and visitors alike. Weall know that during this inter-lude, two people are honored as

patron saints of Taos. St. James and St. Anne have hadtheir names so intertwined that many who areunaware of their history, often assume that they weremarried. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Although it is never men-tioned anywhere except inapocryphal texts outside ofThe Bible, it is possible thatJames might actually be thegrandson of St. Anne, hencethe close link in the old cal-endar of feast days. Some,who contest the idea that St.Anne was married multipletimes, might have a hardertime with this concept.

James is a mentioned asthe third apostle summonedby Christ after Peter andAndrew. James the Greater,as he is known sometimes,became the apostle to Spainafter the Ascension ofChrist. But little is known asto his life from the time ofthe Ascension to his actualburial at Compostela, Spain.For this, we must refer tothe accounts written bymedieval scribe BishopJacobus Voragine. In hisbook titled “The GoldenLegend” he writes extensively of James.

James, son of Zebedee, preached throughout Judeaand Samaria after the Lord’s Ascension and then wenton to Spain to preach. He met with so little success inSpain initially that he made only nine converts.Returning then to Judea, he took seven converts withhim and left the other two back in Spain. In Judea, heincurred the wrath and envy of a certain magiciannamed Hermogenes who was outraged by his preach-ing of the new Christian faith. He bid one of his fol-lowers named Philotes to try to discredit James and

his miracles. Instead of doing the bidding ofHermogenes, Philotes became a convert toChristianity because of James and his preaching.

This angered Hermogenes even more. By his magicarts he summoned forth a multitude of demons topunish Philotes. The demons were willing to complybut when they heard that they would have to face theanger of the “Son of Thunder” as James was called,they pleaded with the magician: “Spare us for we are

on fire already. We cannotharm even an ant as long asit is in the house of James.”The demons tied him upinstead. Then turning toJames they said,“give uspower over Philotes that wemay avenge the harm hetried to do to you.”

To this, James the Apostlereplied,“Let us follow theexample of our Lord JesusChrist and not return evilfor evil but return onlygood. Then he turned toPhilotes and told him tounbind Hermogenes whowas so moved by his actionsas a Christian that he wenthome and gathered up all ofhis books on magic andwanted to burn them.However, St. James said tohim,“The smoke from theevil books might do harmto some who are unaware oftheir danger. Cast themrather, into the sea.”

Hermogenes did as he was asked.He then returned to St. James and said,“Liberator

of men’s souls! You have borne with me while I enviedyou and sought to do you harm! Receive me now as apenitent!” Thereafter he began to live perfectly in thefear of God, so much so that many miracles took placethrough him.

Now, some Jews were indignant at St. James beingthat he had converted the great magician to the new

faith. Abiathar, who was the high priest of that year,incited an uprising among the people, then put a ropearound the apostle’s neck and had him brought beforeHerod Agrippa. At Herod’s command he was led awayto be beheaded but along the road, there was a para-lyzed man lying close by. Invoking the name of JesusChrist, St. James bid him to stand and walk.

The man who had put the rope around St. James’sneck was named Josiah. Having seen how the para-lyzed man got up and walked, he too fell at the apos-tle’s feet and begged mercy. This outraged the highpriest Abiathar so much that he punched Josiah in themouth and then he ordered that Josiah shouldbe beheaded along with James as well.Before they both had their headsstruck off by the sword St. Jamespoured water and baptizedJosiah and so they bothbecame martyrs at the sametime. The beheading tookplace on March 25, thefeast of the Lord’s annun-ciation.

The body of St. Jameswas put into a deer skinsack and returned toCompostela, Spain by hisdisciples. This happenedon July 25. He was buriedon December 30 becausethe construction of histomb took from August tothe end of December.Compostela was has beenthe site of many great pil-grimages ever since then.

A little bit more difficultto trace is the lineage of St.Anne, who was chosen tobe the mother of The Virgin Mary. What causes con-fusion sometimes is an ancient tradition that says thatSt. Anne had been married three times and with eachman she had a daughter and named each one ofthem, Mary. In Latin and ancient verse says:

“Anna solet dici tres concepisse Marias,Quas genuere viri Joachim, Cleophas, Salomeque.Has duxere viri Joseph, Alpheus, Zebedaeus.Prima parit Christum, Jacobum secunda minorem,Et Joseph justem peperit cum Simone Judam,Tertia majorem Jacobum volucremque Joannem.”

In English, this means: “Anna is usually said to have conceived three Marys.Whom [her] husbands Joachim, Cleophas and

Salome, begot.

The Marys were taken in marriage by Joseph,Alpheus, [and] Zebedee.

The first Mary bore Christ, the second, James theLesser.

And Joseph the Just with Simon and Jude,The third, James the Greater, and John the Wingèd.”

The little that we do know about St. Anne comesfrom the tradition that says that she was the wife of St.Joachim. She had a sister named Hismeria who wasthe mother of Elizabeth and Eliud. Elizabeth was themother of John the Baptist. Eliud became the father ofEminen and the grandfather of St. Servatius.

Apocryphal script holds that Anne was married toJoachim first. By him she conceived The Virgin

Mary through what Jacobus Voraginecalls “the chaste kiss.” This would

make Anne the grandmother ofJesus.

After Joachim died, Anneis said to have remarried.This time her husband wasnamed Cleophas, [brotherof Joseph]. The daughterfrom this marriage wasthe second Mary; Mary ofCleophas [who marriedAlpheus]. This Mary borefour sons known as Jamesthe Lesser, Joseph the Just(also called Barsabas),Simon and Jude [allcousins of Jesus].

When Cleophas died,Anne married her thirdhusband, Salome. WithSalome she had a thirdMary whom she gave toZebedee as wife. Thus thisthird Mary became themother of James the

Greater and John the Evangelist, also cousins of Jesus.If these tradition are true, then St. James is the grand-son of St. Anne and since their calendar feast days fallside by side, they jointly rule over the Taos Fiestas.

During the first day of fiestas, the day of St. James,or Santiago in Spanish, men are wont to ride onhorseback in imitation of the apostle who rode ofhorseback in his great crusade against the Moors inSpain. On the second day, the women usually ride inhorse carriages in honor of Santa Ana, patroness ofmothers and grandmothers everywhere.

Whatever the truth behind the legend, the factremains that the days dedicated to the two great saintsare an occasion for unbridled celebration, meditationand jubilation. Happy Taos Fiestas!

Las Fiestas de Santiago y Santa Ana son el puntoclave para una celebración anual de tradición, culturay la comunidad. Con fiestas privadas tomando lugarpor toda la comunidad, y música, comidas, desfilesentre otras actividades en y alrededor de la Plaza deTaos, es una de los eventos más populares e impor-tantes de Taos.

Comprendiendo lo que encierra el evento, es unamaravilla que se toma un esfuerzo tremendo llevar acabo la fiesta, con todas los eventos relacionados yactividades que funcione bien. Había un tiempo cuan-do se tenía que lidiar para encontrar gente dispuestosde voluntar tremendas cantidades de tiempo parahacer la fiesta una realidad, pero hace 25 años, lascosas han mejorado.

Eso es cuando el Concilio de las Fiestas fue forma-do e incorporado, así creando algo que iba a continuara pesar de los años. La fiesta de este año se dedica a eseaniversario y los años de servicio de aquellos en elconcilio, ambos pasado y presente.

Un número de gente ha servido en el concilio a lolargo de los años, pero algunos, incluyendo la presi-denta corriente Liz Peralta y su esposo Alfred, hanservido más tiempo de todos del concilio corriente.

Liz y su esposo, y su primo de él, Robert, fueron losquienes lo formaron allá en 1981.

El concilio de todos voluntarios trabaja casi todo elaño, con las cosas volviendose más apuradas en lassemanas aproximando las fiestas.

“Yo sigo diciendo,“Este es mi último año,” dijo Liz,riéndose. Es posible que esa amenaza no se lo creenya, porque ha servido en el concilio desde su princi-pio.

Hasta cuando las cosas están especialmente frenéti-cos y estresados, Liz dijo que rodeando la plaza cami-nando y viendo a tanta gente gozando del buen tiem-po lo hace valer la pena.

La razón por crear un concilio para maneja la fiestafue sencilla.“Esto ha sido una tradició por siglos, demanera que no podemos permitir que no más semuera,” dijo Liz.

Liz se chancea que ya no se está poniendo másjoven, pero agregó más serio, que quisiera a gentemucha más joven en el concilio. Es difícil encontrar agente quien está dispuesta a cometir tanto tiempo,especialmente entre la juventud Taoseña.

Mucha gente no realiza cuanto trabajo se dedica ala fiesta cada año, pero piénsalo: Tres días de entren-imiento en vivo, vendedores preparando sus bienes enla Plaza de Taos, los desfiles y otras actividades.

Eso no toma en cuenta los meses aproximando lasfiestas, que incluyen buscando y escogiendo candi-datas para la Corte Real; tres jóvenes muchachas, unade cual se nombrará La Reina. Vangie Romero estáencargada del proceso de las candidatas.

Luego está el concurso de la fiesta, en cual las can-didatas se presentan sus actuaciones, de cual los juecesescojen La Reina y las Princesas. Y está la Fiestecita,una fiesta en miniatura, que toma lugar unas dos sem-anas antes de las fiesta propia.

Entonces llega el evento clave, ó eventos. Tres díasde actividades. Toda las actuaciones de música en vivose tienen que encontrar y preparar en un horario. Esteaño Elma Torres estaba encargada de esa gran tarea.Pero después de todo eso, el Concilio de las Fiestaspuede por fín, descansar hasta el otro año, ¿no es cier-to?

No hay manera. La Corte de las Fiestas se dedica atoda prisa, asistiendo fiestas en otras partes del estado,respresentando en todas las funciones grandes de laciudad, así llevando a cabo el deber como emba-jadores culturales.“Hay mucho correteando y corrien-do por donde quiera,” dijo Liz.

El concilio no lo hace todo sin ayuda ninguna. ElCírculo Kiwanis local organiza el desfile de la fiesta, y

el Círculo Optimista maneja el desfile de los niños.Miembros de Círculo de los Leones maneja el antiguoTío Vivo. El Concilio está muy agradecido a esos gru-pos, asi como al municipio de Taos, que apoya la fiestade varias maneras, que incluye proveendo fondos paraayudar con los grandes gastos de los eventos.

Los miembros del Concilio se les permite cam-biarse de ropa y actualmente gozar los resultados detodo su trabajo, pero abajo de todo eso hay mucharesponsabilidad.

Black Bean Chimichangas,(meat or vegetarian)Makes at least six servingsIngredients:1 cup of fresh shredded Mexican style

white cheese2 cups refried black beans6-12 flour tortillas10 pieces of tomato, chopped2 chopped canned Chipotle chiles1/2 onion finely chopped1/3 cup cooking oil

Salt and pepper to tasteWith meat: (Optional) 2 cups fried ground beef or shredded stewed chicken

Preparation:Using three tablespoons of heated

cooking oil, clarify chopped onions fryinglightly, then add the tomato pieces. Add asprinkle of salt and pepper, add a little water,and simmer.

In a bowl mix the refried black beans,cheese and chile. If using meat add groundbeef or chicken, and mix.To form thechimichangas, place two full tablespoons ofbean/cheese/meat mixture to the middle ofeach tortilla. Roll the tortillas around themixture securing the ends by folding in. Fryuntil lightly browned in the remainder of thehot oil. Allow to absorb excess oil on a papertowel.

Spoon simmered onions and tomatoesover chimichangas before serving.
