Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award

In order to enhance the relationship between Taiwanese American and the community where Taiwanese American lives and to provide encouragement and inspiration of young Americans to excel in leadership, community services as well as academic achievement, the Taiwan Culture Center (TCC) of the greater Washington area is proud to sponsor the “Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award” for 2007. The TCC Board of Directors (BOD) invites all qualified senior students to apply for this scholarship. The application process, qualification and judging criteria are listed below: Qualification & Application • All graduating high school seniors of the chosen school are eligible to apply. One or more

awards will be given to each chosen school, provided there are sufficient applicants from that particular school.

• All graduating high school seniors in the Washington DC metropolitan area who are not from the ten chosen school are also eligible to apply. There will be one or more awards in this (At-Large) category if there are at least five applicants in this category.

• The “Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award” is open to all qualified students from all ethnic groups.

• The application forms are available at the following web link: http://tcc.tacpa.org/tacsa/2007. • The deadline of application is March 31 (postmarked) of each year. • The applicant shall provide a copy of the application form and each of the following documents:

o One recommendation letter in a sealed envelope from the applicant’s guidance counselor or teacher

o One official high school transcript o List of community activities and Services that the applicant had participated including the

duration and frequency o Resume including extra curricula activities o A written essay of no more than 500 words on “Your Most Rewarding Experience of

2007 Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award Recipients (In alphabetic order)

Sheena Austria Sheena Austria is extremely grateful that she was chosen to receive the Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award! Sheena is a seventeen-year-old senior at Winston Churchill High School. She was blessed with the opportunities to participate in the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society at her school. Outside of school, Sheena is a member of her high school show choir called Showstoppers, was a back-up singer and dancer in Blast from the Past, and was a featured dancer in other school musicals. However, the activities Sheena values most are her community service activities. Sheena helped coordinate and lead a summer camp and prom at Summerville Assisted Living, was a volunteer in the pediatric department at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, and is currently a pre-school Sunday school teacher at the Philippine International Bible Church in Olney, Maryland. She will be attending Montgomery College as a Montgomery Scholar in the fall. Sheena would like to thank her loving parents, friends, and Mrs. Zimmerman for their

unconditional love and support, and the Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award Committee for giving her this amazing award.

Jake Bartlett Jake Bartlett of Westfield High School is a highly accomplished student and has dedicated his time to service in the community and in the life of his school. He has served as the Class of 2007 President for four years, worked on the school newspaper for four years, and has been sports editor of the Watchdog for two years. His journalism career enabled him to become a staff writer for Gameday Magazine, a periodical for Northern Virginia high school sports. Additionally, he has been active in the National, English, and Spanish Honor Societies. His community service endeavors include countless hours for his church as a confirmation youth leader, campaigning for former Senator George Allen, and holiday work for local charities.

Bartlett has been successful in balancing two jobs, numerous extracurricular activities, and a rigorous academic load during his high school years. In the fall, Bartlett will attend the University of Virginia where he plans to major in accounting. Bartlett hopes to start his own company that will one day provide financial freedom and allow him to remain very involved in service to others.

Kelly James Kelly James is a highly ambitious young woman who loves to travel, play soccer, and above all else, loves to help people. She did work with providing food for the homeless and in second grade; she started a collection for a disaster relief fund that took place during her second grade year. Her greatest fundraiser was a product of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and

Pentagon. On that day, in 2001, Kelly James decided that watching CNN footage of the planes was not a beneficial use of her time. She set up a bake sale and donated the proceeds to the American Red Cross to benefit the victims and their families. Since 2001, Kelly has funded the same bake sale every year, always donating the proceeds to the American Red Cross. Kelly hopes to be able to continue to help more people as she embarks on her college life at George Mason University this coming fall. Once there, she hopes to study physical therapy and Italian.

Fannie Jou Fannie Jou is a senior in the International Baccalaureate Program at Richard Montgomery High School, where she is the arts editor of the school newspaper, The Tide, as well as the school’s renowned literary magazine, Fine Lines. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as a founding member of Helping Hands, a club involved in creating artwork for community causes. Outside of school, Fannie is the co-captain of a local soccer team she has been a part of for over 12 years. She has also been involved in lessons and performances for both piano and ballet for just as long, and has performed as part of the Silver Star Chinese Dance Company for the past three years. Fannie devotes her summers to volunteer work, particularly in working behind the scenes with the Smithsonian Institution in DC at the National Herbarium as well as the Hirshhorn Museum of Modern Art. She also has done work with the Chinese Immersion Program at the

MCPS Board of Education and is a graduating senior at the Washington School of Chinese Language and Culture.

Mindy Lin Mindy is simultaneously a hard-working, silly, ambitious, and fun-loving girl. She loves to go shopping, eat great food, watch movies, and go to the pool with her friends, but when the time comes to buckle down, she is a focused student, a co-captain of my high school’s Varsity tennis team, a violist for several orchestras in Maryland, an avid dancer, and a leader in several community service organizations. As an officer of Thomas S. Wootton High School’s National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society and a committed volunteer at tutoring programs in and outside of school, much of her free time is devoted to helping and teaching others. Last summer, she was a full-time intern at the National Institutes of Health, a unique and valuable laboratory experience that she will never forget. She

looks forward to spending this coming summer making memories with friends and family, and she is especially excited to be headed off to Princeton University this fall as a college freshman. She said, “Much of my success in this first chapter of my life must be credited to the loving guidance and wisdom of my mom, dad, and my older sister, Yoming.”

Elizabeth Walker Elizabeth Walker is a senior at Westfield High School. Elizabeth participates in various church activities including church choir and a yearly mission trip to Tennessee. She has also been a youth leader for her church's confirmation for several years. She has been a varsity member of the Track and Field team for four years and is currently captain. She is a member of Math, Science, Spanish and National Honor Societies. Elizabeth will graduate with Summa Cum Laude honors. Next year she will be attending the College of Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

Allen Yang Allen Yang is currently a senior at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland. Aside from learning, his interests include reading, journalism, music and volleyball. He is Managing Editor of Young D.C., the independent Washington D.C. metropolitan area newspaper managed by high school students for the local teenage population. He is also President of the Math Team, Mock Trial Team, Science National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta, JETS Team and Medical Venturing Crew. He plays volleyball with CCACC and also plays the piano. If asked about his favorite academic subject, he will usually say it is math or science (particularly biology and physics), although he currently plans on going into economics. He will be attending Harvard University in the fall.

Yujie Yang Yujie was born on September 15, 1988 in the autonomous city of Chongqing, China. He is the only child in the family. His parent chose “Yujie” as his name because they wished him to be “successful.” At the age of 10, he immigrated with his parents to Greater Washington DC, USA. In Maryland, he attended Twinbrook Elementary School and Julius West Middle School. During his high school career in Wootton, he participated in various extracurricular activities, including Science Technology and Research Scholar program. He is also a member of the National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society, and National Chinese Honors Society. Additionally, he participated in many community services, such as tutoring little kids in academics and fundraising for clubs, school, and helpless, homeless kids in rural

place of China. He became interested in Math and Science. In 10th Grade, he joined Wootton HS Chemathon Year Two Team and later won the chemistry competition. He also participated and ranked in numerous nationwide mathematics competitions, including American Math Contest, American Invitational Math Exam, and Continental Math League. Recently, he was the National Semifinalist in 2007 USA Biology Olympiad. Aside from academics, he was also interested and involved in sports, such as badminton. One of his hobbies is traveling. He loves traveling because he can learn new things on different trip to different places.

Yuan Zhou Yuan Zhou was born in Shanghai, China. He suffered from asthma from the pollution, so his family left China when he was six years old to the United States. They moved around quite a lot between Canada and the U.S. and they settled five years ago in Fairfax, Virginia. His father is a meteorologist and works for NOAA. They came to the D.C. area because there are two places in the U.S. for meteorologists: D.C. in the nation’s capital and Oklahoma in the heart of tornado alley. He has lived in both places, and one of the most exciting times of his life was when three tornados were swirling around his town in Oklahoma once. His mother used to work with library science and she has a degree in computer science. She’s a stay-at-home

mom, and sometimes Yuan likes that because she can cook every night. He likes to hang out with friends and loves food. He jogs to keep in shape and plays chess as a hobby. He is a senior at Robinson Secondary School and will go to the University of Virginia this coming fall.

Meet the Artists 演 出 者 簡 介

Soprano, Hui-Ju Chen

Hui-Ju Chen was born in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Ms. Chen received her Master of Music degree from University of Maryland at College Park and Bachelor of Music degree from Fu-Jen Catholic University. She currently is pursuing her Doctoral of Music Art degree at University of Maryland, College Park, under the guidance of Professor Carmen Balthrop.

Ms. Chen was often invited to participate in many dramas and musicals, such as Confucius the Teacher (2001), Taiwan’s story (2001), Little Mermaid (2005), Taiwanese Musical Eternal Hope (2006) and Bygone years (2007), produced by Vision Music. Her operatic roles include Susanna in Mozart’s La nozze di Figaro, Nannetta in Verdi’s Falstaff, Lucy in Menotti’s Telephone and Parrot in The Scarecrow And The Thief, performed in Taiwan and Japan. She also performed many recitals and concerts. In December 2006, she was invited as a soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah, with The Maryland Chorus in the Elsie & Marvin Dekelboum Concert Hall in the United States.

Ms. Chen was the winner of 1995 Taipei Music competition and got the first place of Fu-Jen Catholic University Concerto Competition in 1998 and 1999. Ms. Chen is currently the conductor of the Ya-Yin Chorus and Hakka TungFa Chorus and the Soprano soloist at St. Luke’s Parish.

Bassoonist, Ying-Ting Chiu

Ying-Ting Chiu is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Maryland, where she holds the Orchestral Fellowship in bassoon. She is a student of Linda Harwell and Sue Heineman. As a high school and college student in her native Taiwan, Ms Chiu won several solo performance competitions for young Taiwanese professionals. She then came to the United States to study with Frank Morelli at Yale University, where she received both her Master's Degree and the Artist Diploma. During that time, she and Mr. Morelli toured Taiwan, presenting a series of bassoon recitals, concerts, and masterclasses. An accomplished pianist as well as bassoonist, Ms Chiu also accompanied Frank Morelli's masterclasses.

In the summer of 2001, Ms Chiu was the recipient of a full scholarship and also a special award at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, where she was chosen to perform with pianist Peter Frankel, violinist Syoko Aki, flutist Carol Wincenc, and hornist William Purvis. Ms Chiu is a recipient of the National Orchestral Institute Fellowship in 2004. She is now an active freelance bassoonist and accompanist in the DC area. Since 2006, she has been serving on the music faculty at the Ark and Dove School of Music in Odenton, Maryland.

Baritone, Yi-Cherng Lin

Yi-Cherng Lin has earned his Doctor of Musical Art degree in Voice Performance with an opera concentration at University of Maryland, College Park in June 2006. As a native of Taiwan, Mr. Lin has performed Taiwanese folksongs in many concerts in the United States of America include the Sound of Taiwan Concerts in Maryland, and California. In addition, he has founded the Vision Music in 2006 and soon produced the first Taiwanese Musical Eternal Hope, commissioned by Greater Washington Taiwan Culture Center in April 2006 in Rockville, Maryland. In 2007, another production Bygone Years is successfully presented in Rockville, Maryland.

In his opera performances, while in Taiwan, Mr. Lin portrayed the role Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Betto in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and Alcindoro in La Boheme. Here in Maryland, he has portrayed the role of The Orator in the Maryland Opera Studio’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and the title role Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Mr. Lin has also performed several recitals and concerts including a special guest performance with members of the Shanghai Opera on the Gala U.S. Concert. In November 2000, he was invited as a bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah, with the Taipei Chamber Chorus in the Taipei National Concert Hall in Taiwan. In 2002, he has been accepted to the Aspen Opera Theatre Center. In 2004, Mr. Lin received the Organization of Chinese American Women / Li Foundation Music Fellowship. Currently, he is the conductor of Greater Washington Taiwanese American Chorus and Li-Ren Chorus in Virginia and the Baritone soloist at St. Luke’s Parish.

Violinist, LAUREN SONG Lauren Song, age fourteen, was born in Washington, DC. Lauren began studying the violin at the age of five at the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University where she has studied with Sel Kardan, Ivan Stefanovic, and currently Rebecca Henry. Lauren received the Peabody Preparatory Advanced Certificate in Violin, with Honors, in June 2005. She is currently a member of the Peabody Preparatory Sinfonietta under the direction of Maestro Gene Young, and serves as Concertmaster of the MCYO (Maryland Class Youth Orchestras) Symphony. Lauren has appeared as soloist with the Columbia Orchestra and the Landon Symphonette. She has also won numerous competitions and awards including the Columbia Orchestra Young Artist Competition Senior Division, the Frederick Orchestra String Competition, the Feder Memorial String Competitions held by the WPAS (Washington Performing Art Society), and the Part Recital Competitions, the Honors Competitions, and the Part Concerto Competition at the Peabody Preparatory. Lauren has performed frequently in recitals at the Peabody and in Baltimore, Washington, New York City, Delaware, New Hampshire, Virginia, and Indiana. She has performed in violin masterclasses for Jonathan Carney, Pamela Frank, Victor Danchenko, Klara Berkovich, Soovin Kim, Mimi Zweig, and Violaine Melancon. Lauren is a freshman at Walt Whitman High School in Montgomery County, where she is a member of the Symphonic Orchestra and the debate team. Besides music, Lauren enjoys snowboarding, playing tennis, swimming, traveling, and reading. She also studies Chinese at the Li-Ming Chinese Academy in Rockville on Sundays.

Pianist, Yung-Chin Hsieh (Christina Mollard) Yung-Chin Hsieh graduated from Suchou University (Taipei, Taiwan) in 2000 with a degree in Piano Performance. After graduating, Yung-Chin began teaching privately at many music schools, as well as accompanying church choirs and many instrumental recitals in the Taipei area. In 2004, she relocated to the United States in Maryland where she began accompanying many middle and high school choirs in Montgomery and Howard County. In addition, she is the accompanist for the Hua Xia and Tung Xin Chorus’. Pianist, Kuei-I Wu Kuei-I Wu, one of the most celebrated concert pianists from Taiwan, has played as solo artist and chamber musician at numerous festivals in Taiwan, Spain, Salzburg Austria and here in the US. Kuei-I was a prize winner of several International Competitions including First Prize at the Mieczyslaw Munz Piano Competition; Second Prize and Promising Artist Award at the National Society of Arts and Letters Competition; and Second Prize at the Five Towns Music and Art Foundation Piano Competition. Kuei-I, a native of Taiwan, received her diploma from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and graduated with First Prize, the highest honor from the keyboard department. Upon immigrating to the United States, Kuei-I attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with full scholarship and was named “Outstanding Pianist” at her 1997 Bachelor of Music graduation. She received her Master of Music from Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University where she was employed as accompanying assistant with full scholarship. She was also selected as a regular performer of Leon Fleisher’s piano seminar. Recently, Kuei-I received her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland at College Park where she studied with Santiago Rodriguez. Her other major teachers have been Hsiao-Ping Hu, Mack McCray and Boris Slutsky. Among her earlier awards are first prizes in San Francisco Conservatory of Music Concerto Competition, the National Taiwan Academy of Arts Piano Concerto Competition, the Taiwan National Kawai Piano Competition and the Kaohsiung Piano Competition. Kuei-I is in high demand as solo pianist and chamber musician. She has performed the Liszt Piano Concerto No. 2 at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Her recently performances include recitals in Columbia, Rockville, Frederic, College Park and Netherlands Embassy in Washington DC. Kuei-I currently serves as piano faculty at Frederic Community College. Cellist, Chia-Yi Tseng Chia-Yi Tseng, a native of Taiwan, will receive her Doctor of Musical Arts degree this May from University of Maryland. As an experienced and active performer, Ms Tseng has been

the prize winner of many competitions in Taiwan, France and the US. She performs frequently as a recitalist and chamber musician. Her performance had been occurred in most prestigious Hall such as the Carnage Hall in New York, Theatre de Chatelet, Theater de Champes Elysee, Salle Gavot, and Salle de Cortot in Paris. In 1997, Ms Tseng received the "Diplome Superieur de Concertriste " , the highest performance degree from Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris , and was invited to have a Master Class with the world famous cellist, M.Rostropovich. Two years later, she received another performance Diploma from Conservatoire Superieur de Paris. To enhence her studies, Ms Tseng moved to US and received a Master of Music degree from Yale Unievristy in 2001. Ms Tseng had been fellow of Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Festivale Internationale de Pablo Casals, Festivale Internationale de Courchevelled, Festivale Internationale de Biarritz, and followed Master Classes by Francs Helmerson, Phillie Muller, Arto Noras, Peter Wiley, and Roland Pidoux.

Pianist, I-Ling Chen

I-Ling Chen, Annual Distinguished Young Artist of Taiwan in 1999, received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland in December 2002. As former faculty member of Moores School of Music, University of Houston and Howard Community College in Columbia Maryland, Dr. Chen has always dedicated herself to both performing and teaching piano.

Dr. Chen was born and raised in Taiwan. She first started playing the piano when she was five years old. As the winner of the Tai-Chung City Concerto Competition, I-Ling Chen was invited numerous times to play with the Tai-Chung City Symphony Orchestra between 1988 and 1990. Through a national honors program, Dr. Chen was selected to attend the National University of the Arts, the most prestigious performing arts institution in Taiwan. She received many prizes and awards during her college years, including the First Prize Winner of the Taiwan National Piano Competition in 1992 and 1995. After receiving the Special Prize in Best Collaborative Pianist in the Kuan-Tu New Voice Competition, Dr. Chen wanted to expand her repertoire into operas and chamber music. Subsequently, she worked at the National Taipei Opera Workshop and had numerous performances at the National Theatre in Taipei.

In 1995, I-Ling attended the music festival in Johanesen International School of Music in Vancouver Canada. During the music festival, she was the Winner of "The Stars of Today and Tomorrow" and was invited to play Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.2 for the festival's final concert. One year later, Dr. Chen received a scholarship from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston Massachusetts to study piano performance with Ms. Patricia Zander. I-Ling Chen had many concerts in Boston, including a recital with Lawrence Wolfe at Symphony Hall in 1998.

After completing her Master of Music degree, Dr. Chen became a staff pianist at both the New England Conservatory and the Longy School of Music in Cambridge Massachusetts and continued to perform frequently in the Boston area. After relocating to Maryland for her doctorate study in 1999, Dr. Chen was invited on the music faculty of Howard Community

College, where she taught piano and chamber music. She also served as the conductor of the Columbia Choir in Columbia Maryland. In 2001, Dr. Chen moved to Houston Texas where she dedicated herself to teaching and became the founder of the Harmonic Piano Studio. While in Houston, she also served on the music faculty in the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, and as an organist at Taylor Lake Christian Church in Seabrook Texas. She is currently on Faculty at The Academy of Music in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Violinist, Tao Yu

Tao Yu, the highly acclaimed concert violinist, has performed in recitals and concerto concerts across three continents since the age of twelve. His first recording was release at the age of twelve in Taiwan. Tao came to the United States from his native Taiwan on full scholarship from the Evergreen Foundation (now known as the Evergreen Corporation) to study at the Peabody Preparatory and later at the Peabody Conservatory and Johns Hopkins University in Violin Performance and Electrical Engineering. He began violin study with Dr. Shiao-Jun Ma (father and teacher of the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma) at the age of four. At the age of five, Tao became the Concertmaster of Dr. Ma’s “Little Angel String Orchestra” and toured every major city in Taiwan.

At the age of ten, Tao was chosen to perform at the Asia Composers’ Guild Forum, and received rave reviews. By the age of twelve, he won the Taiwan National Violin Competition and gave his first public concerto performance at the Sung Yet-Sun Memorial Hall, sponsored by the Taiwan Cultural Bureau. At the age of thirteen, he was featured in the Taiwanese Government’s Promotional Cultural Documentary as most talented violin prodigy from the country. He has studied with some of the great violin teachers of our time, including Isaac Stern, Berl Senofsky, Sylvia Rosenberg, Victor Danchenko, Roman Totenberg, Daniel Heifetz, and Gerald Fischbach. He has won prizes at the Taipei International Violin Competition, the American Young Artists Competition, the Marbury Violin Competition, and the Yale Gorden Concerto Competition. He has twice received the “Rose and Lau Becker Memorial Prize For Outstanding Violinist” at Peabody Conservatory, and has won the Homer Ulrich Award in solo performance from the University Of Maryland College Park, where he is completing his doctoral degree.

Tao is eagerly sought after as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed in the “Embassy Series” in DC, the “Music in The Great Hall” Series, the Heifetz Summer Music Annapolis 2000, and is a regular guest artist of the Gomach Music Festival in Taiwan since 1995. He has also appeared as soloist with major symphony orchestras in both Taiwan and the United States. He has been concertmaster of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Annapolis Camarata, and the Chinese American Music Society Symphony Orchestra. From 2000-2003, Tao also tours throughout North America as the Concertmaster of the Classical Band in many prestigious music series including Stanford Lively Arts Series, Bass Performance Hall series, and Alys Stephens Performing Arts Series. Tao is equally demanded as a violin teacher. For the last 5 years, Tao has tought at The Heifetz International Music Institute, University of Maryland Baltimore County. He is current a guest faculty at Peabody Conservatory and Juilliard Preparatory.

The TungFa Chorus The TungFa Chorus began two years ago when several Hakka fellows conceived the idea of starting a singing group to celebrate and share the Hakka culture with others through the Hakka music. This theme is further honored in the name TungFa Chorus, which comes from the beautiful white and red Tung Flower that covers the hill side of North Central Taiwan in spring, their petals dancing on the wind like fragrant snowflakes. The TungFa Chorus’ goal is to share the Hakka culture and promote cross-cultural understanding through the music. Since its inception, the TungFa chorus has continued to grow through the enthusiastic participation of its members, volunteers, and the support of the Hakka community. The FAIRFAX CHINESE DANCE TROUPE is a non-profit amateur group, dedicated to sharing art & culture and promotion of cross-cultural understanding through the beautiful art of dance. Dancers consist of students of all ages from the Greater Washington Metropolitan area, and Delaware. In 2004, Mrs. Chin-Siu Lee Choi was the recipient of the Flying Phoenix Award, highest honor awarded by The National Dance Association of R.O.C.-Taiwan. The Fairfax Chinese Dance Troupe placed 1st and 2nd places in the solo and group categories at the 2004 New England Chinese Dance Competition, was a 2006 Finalist and a 2007 Nominee for the Metro DC Dance Awards. Under the direction of Mrs. Choi and her two daughters, Stella and Amy, this troupe has developed a diverse circle of audiences. The Fairfax Chinese Dance Troupe has performed at several international festivals abroad (Formosa Dance Tour 2000, 2000 I-Lan International Children’s Festival, 2004 International Dance Festival in Grenada, 2004 Trinidad Dance Tour), on Capitol Hill, at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater and Millennium Stage, the National Theatre, US 14th Air Force Assoc.-Flying Tigers Reunion, the FBI, Cherry Blossom Festival, and Independence Day Parade. Annually they perform in various lunar New Year celebrations, DC Dance Festival, Asian Pacific Islander American heritage festivals, Longwood Gardens, Kimmel Center of Philadelphia, and myriad of arts & cultural celebrations across the region. The troupe also supports charitable events of the Red Cross, National Race for the Cure, churches, nursing homes, senior centers and schools throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The Taiwan Culture Center of Greater Washington, D.C. area (TCC, officially Taiwan Culture Center, Inc.) is a non-profit organization that promotes international cultural exchange and cultural, educational, and charitable affairs involving Taiwanese Americans and others. We are very pleased to inform you that Taiwan Culture Center (TCC) has received approval on the zoning change application (from residential to service zoning). We are officially operating as a "Service Organization" at the TCC facility located at 7509 Needwood Road, Derwood, MD 20855. Currently, the Center is open from 10am to 3pm on each weekday and other time/date upon special request. All Taiwanese American or groups are encouraged to use the facility during these hours. Aside from seminars, annual meeting, open house and concert, the Center provides monthly “Taiwanese Movies Appreciation” program that gives great opportunity for all Taiwanese American to catch up with the most famous movies in Taiwan. TCC sponsor the Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award (TACSA) every year to enhance the relationship between Taiwanese American and the community where Taiwanese American lives and to provide encouragement and inspiration of young Americans to excel in leadership, community services as well as academic achievement. Expanding the current “Taiwan Culture Center” in the Greater Washington, D.C. area is the immediate goal of many Taiwanese-Americans in the area. Being at the capital of the United States and the political capital of the world, it is an ideal location to effectively promote Taiwanese culture in the US as well as around the world. Furthermore, the center helps in enhancing the international status of Taiwan. It is equally important that TCC center becomes the facility where Taiwanese-Americans of the area can conduct meetings, social gatherings, and educational/charitable activities.
