London putson a jolly goodshow for the2012 SummerOlympicsTheOpening Ceremonies of an Olympics

is like meeting someone for the first time:It’s a city’s or country’s chance to make a firstimpression, one that it can’t get back or do over. For Bob Costas, the show in Beijing that

kicked off the 2008 Summer Games was thebe-all and end-all of Opening Ceremonies, exhibiting a power, beauty, and attention to

detail and precision that left him awestruck –and somewhat disturbed.“I think in Beijing they retired the trophy,”

says Costas, a veteran of 10 Olympics datingback to the Seoul Summer Games in 1988. “Youknow, they had the resources to do it. You havea country that not only financed the Olympicsand did so with an unlimited budget, but whichis in a position to have tens of thousands of‘volunteers’ volunteer to rehearse for six months. You just got circumstances in China that youwouldn’t find anywhere else.”“I think that the average person watching at

home had a combination of appreciation andawe for the beauty of it and the accomplishmentof it. But also it was a little unsettling to them, because you said, ‘My God, if they can marshaltheir forces with this much precision for this ...’– well you fill in the blank.”This time around, London is on display as the

2012 Summer Olympics gets underway with theOpening Ceremonies Friday, July 27, on NBC,kicking off more than 5,500 hours of coverageacross NBC and its properties Bravo, CNBC,

MSNBC, NBC Sports Network, Telemundo,NBCOlympics.com and two specialty channels, that runs through the Closing Ceremonies onAug. 12.Costas will serve as prime-time host of

the telecasts, heading a broadcast talent poolthat includes Al Michaels, Dan Patrick, RyanSeacrest, John McEnroe and Mary Carillo.Probably the biggest story of this Olympics

for Costas is American swimmer Michael Phelps’pursuit of the all-time record of 18 medals bya single athlete, held by Soviet gymnast LarisaLatynina. Given Phelps’ dominance at the 2008Games, (eight gold medals in eight events),Costas has little doubt that record will fall.“These are not all gold medals in Latynina’s

case,” he says, “and he can pick up a few bronzesand a silver and pass her. And that’s likely tohappen even if he doesn’t win all the races he’sentered in. So it’s very, very likely that he getsthat. Knowing him, he won’t be satisfied withthat. He’ll want the medal haul to be gold.”Another athlete to watch for Costas is

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who is the worldrecord holder and reigning gold medalist inthe 100m and 200m events and – with histeammates – the 4x100m relay. Bolt comes intothese Games as the overwhelming favorite inthose events, though Costas isn’t quite ready tobet the house.

Like handball, water polo is played bytwo teams of seven – six outfield playersand a goalkeeper – with the object being toput the ball in the opponents’ goal. Twelvecountries compete in the men’s tournamentand eight in the women’s in a round-robinformat, followed by semifinals and finals.Three-time defending gold medalistsHungary are favored to repeat on the men’sside, with 2008 silver and bronze medaliststhe United States and Serbia vying withMontenegro for remaining podium space. In the ladies’ tournament, defending silverand bronze medalists the United States andAustralia head a wide-open field.

reflected in themedal haul at the2008Olympicsin Beijing, whenthe home teambagged seven ofeight golds and a silverin the event they didn’twin. And coming into London,it’s not unreasonable to think they couldbe just as dominant.Probably themost prohibitive of the

Chinese favorites is the duo ofWang FengandQin Kai in themen’s synchrospringboard. They won the goldmedal in 2008 aswell as theWorldChampionshipin ‘09, while Qinpartnered withLuo Yutong towin the world title in’11.The only questionin this competition will bewhich countries join them on thepodium. In themen’s individual springboard, He

Watch outfor fallingrecordsSwimming is divided into four strokes

– freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke andbutterfly, plus medley (a combination ofthe four) – in distances ranging from 50meters to 10 kilometers, and there areindividual and relay events. Thirty-fourgold medals are awarded to men’s andwomen’s swimmers.Unless you’ve been

living on

Jupiter, you know the big story of thesegames is American Michael Phelps andhis pursuit of the all-time record for totalmedals won by an Olympic athlete of 18,held by 1950s-60s Soviet gymnast LarisaLatynina. Currently, he’s at 16, so theidea that the owner of 14 gold medals, including a single-games record eightin Beijing, can’t manage at least threebronzes in about a half-dozen events ispatently absurd. Of course, the 27-year-old Baltimore native has indicated thiswill be his last Olympics, so if he‘s goingto do it, now is the time. At this writing,it was not known in which events hewould participate, although he hasindicated the 400m individualmedley would not be amongthem, due to its gruelingnature. One of Phelps’ chief

challengers would be hisUSA teammate RyanLochte. The 27-year-old

Floridian has three gold medals to hisname, plus world records in the 200-and 400-meter individual relays and the2x400-meter freestyle relay. He figuresto be a threat once again in these events, plus the 200m individual medley and the200m backstroke, in which he won goldin Beijing.Other men’s swimmers to watch for in

London include China’s Sun Yang, whowill look to break his world-record timein the 1,500m freestyle; Serbia’s MiloradCavic, who gave Phelps a run for hismoney in the 100m butterfly in Beijingand at the 2009 World Championships;China’s Wu Peng, a rising star in the200m butterfly; and Germany’s ThomasLurz, who figures to garner hardware inthe 10K open water event.

On the women’s side, a number ofworld record holders from the 2008Olympics will return to defend their

gold medals, including FedericaPellegrini

of Italy in the 200m freestyle, GreatBritain’s Rebecca Adlington in the 800mfreestyle, Liu Zige of China in the 200mbutterfly, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwein the 200m backstroke, AmericanRebecca Soni in the 200m breaststroke, and Australia’s Stephanie Rice in the200m and 400m individual medleys. Also, Soni should also put on a show inher rematch against Aussie defendinggold medalist Leisel Jones in the 100mbreaststroke.One record that won’t fall in London

will be one that was thought to bedestined for American Natalie Coughlin. She failed to qualify for two events – the100m butterfly and 100m backstroke –that, had she medaled, would have madeher the most decorated female Americanswimmer in Olympic history. Currently, that distinction belongs to retiredteammate Jenny Thompson and DaraTorres, who have 12 to Coughlin’s11. Coughlin has qualifiedfor the 4x100m

Ten gold medals are awarded amongvarious categories in three size classes (one-,two- and three-person crews), with six formen and four for women. On the men’sside, Great Britain is the favorite in the Star(two person), having topped the medalcount at each of the last three Olympics. The Australians, who haveWorld Cupsand world championships on their resume, have the look of winners in the 470 (twoperson) and Laser (one person). In thewomen’s competitions, look for Spain to viefor gold in the RS:X (one person), while theNetherlands should bag hardware in the 470.

Small craft advisoryCanoeing is divided into two disciplines

– slalom and sprint – with the formertaking place on a whitewater obstacle coursenegotiated by single competitors or teamsof two, and the latter being contested on aflat-water course in distances of 200, 500 or1,000 meters in teams of one, two or four. The competition is divided into two classes:canoe, in which competitors kneel and usea single-bladed paddle to move themselvesalong; and kayak, where competitors areseated in the boat and can use both ends ofa paddle. Sixteen gold medals are awarded inthe two classes. In slalom, look for the Slovak tandem of

Pavol and Peter Hochschorner, three-timeOlympic gold medalists, to dominate thetwo-person canoe event. In the canoe single,Beijing silver medalist David Florence ofEngland has a reasonable shot at movingup to gold, while single kayakers AlexanderGrimm (gold medal in 2008) of Germanyand the U.K.’s Campbell Walsh (silver in ‘04)figure to once again collect hardware. In sprint, 2010World Champion Ed

McKeever of the U.K. should get podiumspace in the 200m kayak, while the 1,000mkayak figures to come down to 2008 goldmedalist Tim Brabants of England and 2011World Champion Adam Van Koeverdenof Canada. In the two-person 200m kayak, the world champion French duo of ArnaudHybois and Sebastien Jouve figure to seea challenge from runners-up Liam Heathand Jon Schofield of the U.K. Speaking ofEngland, Rachel Cawthorn figures to be afactor in both the 200m and 500m women’skayak single events.

Fourteen gold medals are awarded tomen and women in eight disciplines: pairs, fours, lightweight fours and eights, andsingle, double, lightweight double andquadruple sculls. Great Britain hopes touse the home course to its advantage in themen’s lightweight double scull, in which thetandem of Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase isa threat, and the women’s double scull, withKatherine Grainger and AnnaWatkins. The mostunpredictablesportSoccer, or “football,” as it’s called in

the host country – and in every othercountry outside of the States, for thatmatter – is played on an outdoor field, with 11 players on each team tryingto put the ball in the opposition’s net,and the side with the most goals after90 minutes wins. Two gold medals areawarded in men’s and women’s soccer.Perhaps more so than with any other

sport at these games, unpredictably isthe order of the day – for a number ofreasons. One is cultural. In countries

such as Brazil and Spain, a gold medal insoccer is a matter of national pride. Butin England, with its myriad professionalleagues, the Olympic game does nothave the same prestige. Also, someprofessional leagues discourageits players from Olympic playfearing fatigue or injury, soa given country may not befielding its best team. And thenthere are leagues that don’ttake a midwinter break,so those players may bearriving fatigued. Andthen of course, thereare the European

Medals are awarded in men’s and women’sindividual and team competitions. ExpectKorea (North and South) to dominatehere as they won five medals in four eventsin 2008. World No. 1 Im Dong-Hyunof South Korea, who is legally blind butwears no corrective eyewear, is a favoritefor hardware in the men’s individualcompetition, while that country’s Yun Ok-Hee should bag gold on the women’s side.In fact, South Korean women have wonindividual and team gold medals in everyOlympics in which they’ve competed since1984.

Medals are awarded in each of the threedisciplines (rifle, pistol and shotgun) withthree events for men and two for women.Italy’s Niccolo Campriani, the reigningworld champion, is considered a heavyfavorite in the men’s 10m air rifle, 2010world champ Peter Sidi of Hungary shouldget prime podium space in the 3X40mrifle, and Englishmen Steve Scott andStevan Walton have medal capability in thedouble trap pairs event.

Cycling is divided into four disciplineseach in men’s and women’s: track, road, BMX and mountain bike. Thereare 10 events in track (individual andteam sprints, team pursuit, keiren andomnium), four in road (road race andtime trial), and two apiece in BMX andmountain. Eighteen gold medals areawarded in the various events.Much is expected of the British on

their home turf. In track, look for four-time gold medalist Chris Hoy to vie forhis fifth in the individual sprint, whileEnglishwoman Victoria Pendleton willcertainly be a contender for her secondgold in the women’s event. Hoy will alsobe a threat to medal in the keiren, asshould the U.K.’s Lizzie Armitstead inthe women’s omnium. In Olympic basketball, the games aresimilar to the NBA’s, except games aredivided into four 10-minute quartersinstead of 12. The tournament follows theestablished format of 12 teams divided intotwo pools of six, with each team playingevery other team in its group, and the topfour squads from both groups qualifyingfor the quarterfinals. Gold medals areawarded in men’s and women’s basketball. In the men’s game, it’s all about the

United States. As in years past, theAmerican squad brings everything: scoring(Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin

Durant, Carmelo Anthony), rebounding(Tyson Chandler, Chris Bosh, AnthonyDavis, Blake Griffin), playmaking ability(Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, DeronWilliams), defensive presence (Chandler,James, Paul, Bryant) and highlight-filmpotential (Blake Griffin, Dwyane Wade). And they’ll have a legendary coach,Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, blending all theparts into what they hope is a seamlesspackage. In fact, ever since Olympicbasketball allowed professionals to competebeginning with the 1992 DreamTeam, the Americans have dominated the Games, winning gold in four of five Olympics –the lone exception being the 2004 bronzeflameout in Athens.Teams vying for podium space alongside

the Americans include Spain (with NBAplayers Pau Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarroand Rudy Hernandez), Brazil (LeandroBarbosa, Nene, Anderson Varejao),Argentina (Manu Ginobili, Carlos Delfino,Luis Scola) and China (Yi Jianlian).Lithuania, Serbia and France also areexpected to be competitive. At the 2008 Games in Beijing, Team

USA defeated Spain in the gold-medalgame, 118-107.

If there’s been a team more dominantat the Olympics than the USA men’sbasketball squad, it’s been their femalecounterparts. Since 1984, the Americanwomen have been out of the gold onlyonce, in 1992, when they took thebronze behind the Unified Team andChina.Like the men, the USA women’s

team is a heavy favorite and loadedwith WNBA All-Star-calibertalent, including TamikaCatchings, Sue Bird, DianaTaurasi, Swin Cash, TinaCharles and Candace Parker, and they’ll be coached byGeno Auriemma, a Hallof Famer who has wonseven national titles with theUniversity of Connecticut. As for other teams expected to be

in the running for hardware, look forAustralia (with three-time WNBALauren Jackson and All-Star LizCambage), Russia (featuringsix-time WNBA All-Star BeckyHammon), Belarus andSpain to be competitive.

Male bouts take place over threethree-minute rounds, while women’s fightsare contested over four two-minute rounds.London marks the debut of women’s boxingat an Olympic games.

On the men’s side, look for 2008Beijing gold medalist Zou Shimingof China to dominate the lightflyweight class, though Ireland’sPaddy Barnes could wind up onthe podium. Flyweight is wideopen, with names such as 2011World ChampionMisha Aloyanof Russia, Andrew Selby ofWalesand India’s Suranjoy Singh aspossible medalists. Bantamweightis similarly up for grabs, with 2011World Champion Lazaro Alvarez of

Cuba and Great Britain’s Luke Campbellheading the field. Vasyl Lomachenko, whowon gold as a featherweight in Beijing, moves up in class to be the favorite amonglightweights, while bronze medalistsRoniel Iglesias of Cuba, England’s TomStalker and France’s Alexis Vastine havemedal expectations in light welterweight.Welterweights Taras Shelestyuk of Ukraineand Kazakhstan’s Serik Sapiyev should baghardware, as should middleweights EvhenKhytrov (2011 world champion) of theUkraine and Ryota Murata (silver at the ’11Worlds) of Japan. Cuba’s Julio Cesar la Cruz,a 2011 world champion, tops an otherwisewide open light heavyweight field. Beijingsilver medalist Clemente Russo of Italy is thefavorite in heavyweight, and Great Britain’sAnthony Joshua will try to unseat defendinggold medalist Roberto Cammarelle of Italyat super heavyweight. On the women’s side, five-timeWorld

ChampionMary Kom of India is thefavorite at flyweight, though Nicola Adamsof the U.K. will have plenty of hometownsupport. Lightweight should be particularlyentertaining, especially if Ireland’s dominantKatie Taylor and USA’s Queen Underwoodmeet in the gold-medal match. Canada’sthree-timeWorld ChampionMary Spenceris a threat for gold at middleweight.

Fourteen medals are awarded to men andwomen in seven weight classes. Japan shouldbe in line for a few pieces of hardware withBeijing bronze medal half-lightweight MisatoNakamura, 2010 and ’11 world championlightweights Kaori Matsumoto and Aiko Sato, and 2010 world championship bronze-medalheavyweight MegumiTachimoto leading thecharge for the women’s team. Summer Olympics 2012 Page 15Gymnastics is divided into three disciplines:

artistic, rhythmic and trampoline.Within artistic, there are 10 events: individual,

team, floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault;horizontal, uneven and parallel bars, and balancebeam. A total of 14 goldmedals are awarded tomen’s andwomen’s gymnasts. In rhythmic, there are women’s individual

and group disciplines with two golds awarded. And in the trampoline, there are the men’s andwomen’s events with a goldmedal awarded ineach gender.

In themen’s team event, lookfor China, Japan and theUnited States to vie for podiumspace, while in the individualall-around, 2008 silver medalist

Kohei Uchimura of Japan is the heavy favoriteahead of Great Britain’s Daniel Keatings. Inthe vault, all eyes will be on South Korea’s YangHak-seon to see if he can repeat his goldmedal-winning performance from the 2011WorldChampionships, while Beijing goldmedalwinner Zou Kai of China should vie for primepodium space with Israel’s Alex Shatilov andEngland’s Daniel Purvis in the floor exercise. The parallel bars should come down to China’sZhang Chenglong and an AmericanDanellLeyva, and in the high bars, China has a heavyfavorite in 2008 goldmedalist and 2011WorldChampion Kai. China should also collect

hardware in the rings with Beijing goldmedalistChen Yibing, while athletes fromHungary(2011World Champion Krisztian Berki) andthe U.K. (Louis Smith, Keatings) look tomedalin the pommel horse. On the women’s side, the U.S. has a talented

squad for the team event and they are thefavorites to win gold. The Americans are alsofavored in the individual all-around, where2011World Champion JordynWieberis expected to bag prime hardwareahead of Russians Aliya Mustafina andViktoria Komova. The vault shouldcome down to a battle between 2011World ChampionMcKayla Maroneyof the USA, 2008 gold medalist HongUn-Jong of North Korea, and perhaps37-year-old GermanOksana Chusovitina, the 2008 silvermedalist. Like that other raquet-centric sport, tennis, badminton falls into three categories: men’s andwomen’s singles and doubles, andmixed doubles.ReigningOlympic champion LinDan of ChinaandMalaysia’s Lee ChongWei seemed a shoe-infor themen’s singles gold-medalmatch untilWei tore an ankle ligament. To get an idea of the tennis playersat the Olympics, one need only look atthe ATP and WTA rankings. In singles, the world’s top 56 players as of June2012 gain automatic berths, along witheight wildcard picks, and each country isallowed four entrants. In doubles, the top24 pairs qualify plus eight wildcards. Theformat is knockout, with the winners ofthe semifinals facing each other at – whereelse? – Centre Court of the All EnglandClub at Wimbledon. Five gold medals areawarded in men’s and women’s singles anddoubles, and mixed doubles.

Four medals are handed out in men’s andwomen’s singles and team. As it has sincethe sport’s debut in 1988, China will likelydominate the podium, counting five of six ofthe world’s top-ranked men’s players and fourof six on the women’s side. Wang Hao andZhang Jike will represent the men in bothsingles and doubles, while Li Xiaoxia andDing Ning will do the same for the women.Competition could come from Germany, which took second to China in Beijing and atthe 2011World Championships, with TimoBoll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov particularlyformidable for the men.

Wang Hao

In men’s singles, Spain’s Rafael Nadalis the defending Olympic champion,a title he won on the hard courts in

Beijing. He’s comfortable on the grassof Wimbledon, having won two titlesthere, but so is Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, the currentLondonchamp. Lookfor thesetwo to vie forgold, along withAndy Murray, who couldget a bump from thehometown English crowd. In women’s singles,

American Serena Williamsis a four-time Wimbledonchamp, so she should be a heavyfavorite here – except there isthat puzzling first-round ousterat the 2012 French Open. Ifshe’s not in top form, lookfor gold medal bids to comefrom the Czech Republic’sPetra Kvitova – the reigningWimbledon champ – Belarus’ Rafael

Nadal

Victoria Azarenka and Russia’s MariaSharapova.In men’s doubles, Switzerland’s Roger

Federer and StanislasWawrinka are thegold medalists from Beijing, and they’ll facechallenges from pairs from Spain, Serbia andFrance.

This simple test of raw human strengthhas athletes performing two types of lift:the clean and jerk, and the snatch. In theclean and jerk, competitors must lift thebarbell from the floor to the chest andthen overhead. In the snatch, the barbellis raised from floor to above the headin one motion. Fifteen gold medals areawarded in eight weight classes for menand seven for women. On the men’s side, China will be the

favorites for gold in the 123-, 137- and152-pound divisions, though Vietnam’sHoang Anh Tuan should be a factor at123 pounds. In the 170-pound class,South Korea’s Sa Jae-Hyouk will defendhis 2008 gold medal from challenges byseveral Chinese competitors, while the187-pound division should come downto USA’s Kendrick Farris and China’sLu Yong. The 207-pound competitionis considered wide open, with 2008gold medalist Ilya Ilyin of Kazakhstanand Russia’s Artem Ivanov, the ’08silver medal winner, heading the field.Russian lifters should bag hardware inthe 231-pound division, while IraniansBehdad Salimi (the world record holderin the snatch) and Sajjad Anoushiravanishould dominate the 231-pound-plusclass.For the women, China’s Chen Xiexia

will defend her gold medal in the106-pound division, while clean-and-jerk record holder Zulfiya Chinshanloof Kazakhstan is the favorite at 117pounds.
