Letter from the Athletic Director

The university is pleased to be part of the Sooner AthleticConference (SAC) and the National Association ofIntercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) - two organizations thatplace a high priority on promoting healthy values, develop-ing strong character traits, and encouraging academicachievement among all student-athletes. We share thesevalues at RSU and impress them upon our student-ath-letes every day.

Athletics has a long tradition of bringing out the bestamong student-athletes on the field, while instilling inthem a strong work ethic that can be applied to their aca-demic studies and their post-collegiate careers.

We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we lookforward to another great year on the diamond.

Go Hillcats!

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earningRSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities.

A dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academicprograms, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residen-tial university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technol-ogy, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studiesthrough RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence inits nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a majoraccomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with pri-vate, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earncollege credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders andpolicymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year schol-arship program that fosters personal and professionaldevelopment, was designed for RSU students who havedemonstrated leadership abilities.

RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy, SouthKorea and Wales through the University's Studies-at-Large Program. The international study programs providestudents with opportunities to see the world, learn aboutother cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facilitycombines student development programs under oneroof, serves as a central location for students to study andsocialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campusin Claremore. A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters andsons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first buildingon the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy(OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, bothin military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during WorldWar II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior col-lege grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted avariety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiateathletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accredita-tion as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs tomore than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville and Pryor.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes asthey strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support suchas advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work withtutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsi-ble adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all athletes, toensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a vari-ety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them infor-mation useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athlete is givena demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given exam-ples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the exist-ing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more carefuldecisionmaking.

Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are givenan overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Page 9: 2012 Rogers State Baseball Media Guide

6

Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned aboutthe dangers of gambling addictions and also are warnedagainst gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violationof NAIA and NCAA rules.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order toprovide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)Champions of Character program is designed to instill anunderstanding of character values in sport, and provide prac-tical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use inmodeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Characterprogram addresses character issues more comprehensivelythan any other national program for youth. The Hillcats have a pair of junior college transfers whowill compete for time behind the plate when Rymel isnot catching. Emmanuel De La Cruz and MackenzieMatthews join the Hillcats from tradition rich junior col-leges and will have a chance to earn valuable playingtime.

First BaseSeveral players will vie to replace two-yearstarter Colton West at first base. Cody

Campbell is the projected starter afteran impressive sophomore cam-paign. In his first season on TheHill, Campbell broke the RSU sin-gle-season record for runs battedin with 66 RBI. He also tied thesingle-season record for homeruns as he blasted 13 on the year.Campbell played in 54 games andstarted in 51 contests, primarily asthe designated hitter.

“Cody Campbell is penciled in as ourstarting first baseman. He led us in

home runs last year but needs toimprove defensively,” Bradley said.“Rymel could also see time at first basewhen he is resting his legs.”

Union High School standout WadeAmbrose and De La Cruz could also seetime at first base.

“Wade Ambrose will be a utility guy who canplay first base or outfield and could serve asour DH,” Bradley said.

Second BaseCoach Bradley will look to NorthernOklahoma Junior College transferHector Rivera to replace two-

year starter Jairo Valdez atsecond base. Rivera

In 2011, the Hillcats claimed their first Sooner AthleticConference Tournament championship and made theirfirst appearance at the NAIA Opening Round. With a 45-15 record and a No. 15 final ranking, the RSU baseballteam posted its best finish to date. While the Hillcatsraised the bar last season, the 18 returners and23 newcomers have unfinished business toattend to in 2012. They have their eyes set ona trip to the NAIA World Series.

The Hillcats return five starters from last year’sball club, including second team all-confer-ence performers Randy Ramirez and LanceRymel. All five returning starters hit .313 orbetter a year ago.

Head Coach Ron Bradley has added a tal-ented group of newcomers to complementthe returners and believes the team is capableof achieving great success in 2012.

“We are as talented as we were last year maybe evenbetter,” Bradley said. “The key for us will be winningthe close games; it really makes the differencebetween a good season and a great season. We won45 games last year and I would like to see us win 50this year. It’s a lofty goal, but I think it is attainablefor this club. I have told our kids one great year isnot tradition. Our program is still in the infancystage and we are continually trying to establish tra-dition. We need to turn last year into back-to-backyears to continue to gain credibility as a top con-tender.”

CatcherLance Rymel returns for his final season withthe Hillcats. The senior was RSU’s every daystarter behind the dish last season and hewill assume the role once again in 2012. Heregistered a .988 fielding percentage, com-mitting just three errors in 258 chanceslast year. He tallied a .373 batting averagewith 44 hits, five home runs and ninedoubles.

“Rymel has more experiencewith our ball club that anyoneelse as he will be athree-year starter,”Bradley said. “He is abuilding block for ourprogram. He had an outstanding junior season offensive-ly and defensively. I expect great things out of him thisyear. I really hope to see him have a good season andhave a chance to play at the next level.”

Redshirt freshman Jeff Fyfe could also see playing time atthird.

OutfieldAlthough RSU lost NAIA All-America centerfielder BrandtBarnes, the Hillcats return two starters from a season agoand have added a talented group of newcomers.

“You can’t replace Brandt Barnes, rarely do you have aplayer who produces the numbers he had last season,”Bradley said. “Right now we are looking at Eric Baker incenterfield. He started in the outfield at Connors JuniorCollege and served as their leadoff hitter. He is a goodrunner but still making some adjustments to centerfield,he was a corner guy in junior college.”

Colton Campbell and Keith Poverud will play in the cor-ners for the Diamond Cats. Campbell appeared in 40games, starting in 34 contests in 2011. He had a .336batting average, driving in 22 runs on 36 hits with a trioof home runs. Poverud appeared 46 contests and start-ed in 29 of them as a sophomore in 2011. He drove in22 runs, blasted three home runs and hit seven doubleswith a .312 batting average

“Colton Campbell is penciled in at left field,” Bradleysaid. “He stared off hot offensively last year and leveledout. We need for him to return to his A-game on offensethis season. Keith Poverud has continued to makeimprovements every season and I look for him to have abig year for us. He is a good leader on and off the field.”

Taylor Estes, Alex Cochran, Fyfe and Ambrose will all bein the mix for playing time in the outfield.

“Taylor Estes is a good defensive outfielder who will havea chance to play in some late innings defensively,”Bradley said. “Alex Cochran will also see playing time inthe late innings defensively. Ambrose and Fyfe could playin the outfield in order to add their bats to the lineup.”

PitchingRSU returns a good group of veteran hurlers but has toreplace the likes of Grant Cosby, Matt Sample and TylerBrown who combined for 16 wins, four saves and justtwo losses last season.

“All good clubs are built around their pitching,” Bradleysaid. “Our pitching staff has allowed us to be a qualityteam. We lost a couple excellent pitchers from last sea-son. Matt Sample pitched sparingly but all of his inningswere quality and valuable. Grant Cosby had an outstand-ing career and won some big games for our team. TylerBrown was a valuable part of our ball club and will bedeeply missed. ”

for the top defensive second baseman in NJCAA DivisionII. He only made four errors the entire season with afielding percentage of .978. Freshman Blake Heston andHamilton Hernandez could also be called upon at sec-ond base.

“Hector is penciled in as our starting second baseman,”Bradley said. “He is a left-handed hitter and earned aNJCAA DII gold glove.”

ShortstopRandy Ramirez returns for his senior campaign afterstarting in 58 of the Hillcats 60 contests last season. Asthe Hillcats everyday shortstop, he led the team in onbase percentage (.511) and holds the single seasonrecord for walks with 41. He tallied eight home runs, 26stolen bases and 13 doubles with a .383 batting average.

“Randy had a great season and followed it up with animpressive summer,” Bradley said. “To me, he is one ofthe premiere shortstops in the country. He brings greatoffense and defensive numbers to the table. His experi-ence will be very valuable to our infield.”

Third BaseSenior Cade McKewon returns as the Hillcats starter onthe hot corner. He started in 58 of the Hillcats 60 gamesin 2011. He stole 10 bases and drove in 42 runs whilebatting .246 on the season. As a mainstay in the Hillcatinfield, he compiled a .914 fielding percentage.

“Cade McKewon resumes his role as our starting thirdbaseman,” Bradley said. “Last year he struggled offen-sively for the first time in his career. I look for Cade tobounce back and have a lot better year offensively.Defensively he is very solid and made some of the niceplays we had last season.”

2011 Baseball Season Outlook

StartersA pair of southpaw newcomers look to make instant con-tributions in the starting rotation. Brandon Bargas joinsthe Hillcats after spending his sophomore season atEastern Oklahoma College where he registered an 8-5record with a 3.01 ERA. Shawn Spainhoward is a lefthanded pitcher from Southeast Missouri State.

“Brandon Bargas and Shawn Spainhoward both playedat the Division I level and are two guys I have penciled inas starters for us,” Bradley said.

Senior Tyler Garner finished 2011 with a 6-3 overallrecord and 3.53 ERA. He fanned 44 batters in 48.1 inningpitched. His season was cut short as he endured TommyJohn surgery at the end of the season. However he isrecovering quickly and Coach Bradley hopes he will beable to contribute early in the season.

“We lost Tyler Garner at the end of the season last yearand I feel like he was one of our top starters” Bradleysaid. “He has comeback quickly after surgery and I thinkhe will have a chance to be a key contributor for us if hecontinues to progress and stay healthy. Garner has qual-ity innings in our program and he will be a leader on ourpitching staff as well as a valuable asset on the mound.”

“Our No. 3 starter is up in the air,” Bradley said. “We arelooking for someone to step into the role. Could beGarner if he is ready which could come late in the sea-son. Kyle Duncan is also a possibility. He had a good falland will be looking to compete with returner Eric Faustfor that third starting spot on conference weekends.”

ReliefThe Hillcats will have a host of left-handed relievers tochoose from each game. Drew Taylor returns for his sen-ior season after making 16 apperences and tallying a 4-1 record last season. Senior Jacob Wenaas and Jim Mineralso saw valuable innings last season along with juniorCasey Cassity.

“Drew Taylor has a deceptive side-arm approach; look tosee him have a chance to play in every game,” Bradleysaid. “Jim Miner and Jacob Wenaas were both spotstarters and came out of the bullpen last year.”

“Mason Marquette is a guy who caught our eye this fall.He could be a surprise coming out of the bullpen. KyleDeaton will be another guy that will be able to contributefrom the left side.“

Coach Bradley still has a couple of question marks as faras right-handed hurlers go. Freshman Joe McGee had animpressive fall. Joining him will be Jeremy Penn, who hastwice been drafted and is looking to come back frominjury. Right hander TJ Law will compete for time as well.

ClosersReturners Zach Williams and Freddy Soto will be battlingfor the closing job. Williams recorded a 1-0 record andtallied a team-best 1.29 ERA during his first season onthe Hill. Soto completed the 2010 season with a 2-0-1record and a 4.63 ERA.

“Both Zack and Freddy throw 90-94 MPH and will havea lot of opportunities to earn playing time early in theseason. They will be battling to win the closing role.”

New Construction at the Hillcat Complex

The Rogers State University athletic department hasembarked on the largest facilities enhancement initiativein the history of Hillcat Athletics and wants to give its fansan opportunity to be a part of the excitement.

RSU athletics is offeringits fans and communitysupporters a fun andeasy way to partnerwith the Hillcats duringthis historic period ofdevelopment through

the Pave the Way campaign. Supporters can leave a last-ing legacy at one of the newly renovated facilities by pur-chasing an engraved brick with a personal message oftheir choosing. All proceeds from the sale of bricks willbenefit capital improvements for RSU athletics. For moreinformation about ordering a brick, contact the RSUAthletic Department at 918-343-7782.

“These facility improvements will be a huge asset to ourathletic programs, the RSU campus and the community,”RSU Director of Athletics Ryan Bradley said. “Once com-pleted, these facilities will be recognized among the bestsmall-college venues in the country. The Pave the Waycampaign is a unique and fun way for our fans to sup-port the growth of Hillcat Athletics and own a piece ofhistory.”

The projects include $4 million in improvements to thebaseball, softball, soccer, and cross country facilities thatwill benefit more than 120 of our student-athletes on ayearly basis.

The RSU athletic program has enjoyed unprecedentedsuccess since its inception in 2005. The Hillcats havecombined for three conference championships, sixnational tournament appearances, and an overall win-ning clip of 67 percent over the past six years. RSU isproud to have the opportunity to provide its athletes withfacilities that will foster continued growth and successfor many years to come.

Bricks at the Hillcat Baseball/Softball Complex will beplaced in the central courtyard between the two fields.Located between the main entrance and the seatingarea, thousands of fans will pass through the courtyardeach year. Bricks at the Soccer/Cross Country Fieldhousewill be located outside the building in a plaza area nearthe concessions and restrooms. The plaza will serve as agathering place for fans before, during and after gameswith great sightlines to the field.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to leave a per-manent marker at one of the premiere small-college ath-letics facilities in the country.
