Welcome to the 2013 Matilda Bazaar and Sedan Chair Race!

I would like to thank you for your support and contribution to the Matilda Bazaar and Sedan Chair Race, one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most popular charitable events.

I would also like to thank this year’s sponsors, race-team members and all the event organisers and volunteers who selflessly give their time, sweat and enthusiasm to make the event such a colourful, exciting and superb family day out. We hope this will be a record-breaking year and with everyone’s active support I have no doubt that we will once again prove Hong Kong’s deep commitment to support local charities.

For 39 years, teams of enthusiastic volunteers have raced up and around the Peak carrying a sedan chair in order to raise money for local charities, while on the grounds of the Matilda International Hospital more volunteers organize a fabulous bazaar with refreshments and entertainment for all the family.

To date, the Matilda Bazaar and Sedan Chair Race has raised $63.3 million dollars for over 131 local charities, with every dollar raised going directly to the charities and organisations that benefit from your goodwill. It is a wonderful and enduring annual tradition that highlights the generosity and charitable spirit of the Hong Kong people. That is why I am so grateful for your support and generosity and appreciate so much your participation and fundraising.

I wish you all, therefore, a wonderful day out at the 2013 Matilda Bazaar and Sedan Chair Race and with your help let’s make this the best fundraising year for local Hong Kong charities ever!

Thank you,

Mary RaffertyChairman, Sedan Chair Charities FundCEO, Matilda International Hospital

On behalf of all staff of The Standard, I am honoured to become the sole English print media sponsor of the Matilda Sedan Chair Race for the ninth straight year.

There are many charity activities happening in Hong Kong along the year. Sedan Chair Race is no doubt but one of the most meaningful and successful events. Every year, we would see participants racing in sweat with impressive and fascinating costume on. In the meanwhile, there are even more people enjoying their time at the Bazaar. We should be grateful to have such a wonderful organizing committee to make these happen. Then, it’s up to us to show our support in various ways. As I always say, it is never about how much you can help. Passion and participation matters.

I wish the best for all participants and look forward to seeing you all on the day.

Yours sincerely,

TEAMSTeams consist of a maximum of nine persons, one of whom must be the ‘Passenger’ and who must remain in the chair throughout the Race. Passengers must be over 16 years old, alive and human. Ladies and school teams do not have a passenger but must have a weight of at least 10kg firmly attached to the chair (a bag of rice / container of water is recommended). One official cheerleader is optional but may not touch the chair at any time during the Race.

MASTERSTeams with an average age of 40+ years, with no member younger than 35, compete for the Masters’ Team Trophy.

SCHOOLSIn addition to the rules applying to other teams, all school teams must have participants of both sexes, with a minimum of three males and three females.

CHAIRSStandard chairs and poles are provided for all teams. No alteration may be made to the standard chair, but weight may be added in the form of decoration. However the chair MUST NOT be made any wider. Only two standard poles are issued to each team. No alteration may be made to the poles other than the addition of padding and/or slings. All members of the team need not carry the chair at the same time, but all must start the Race together. Substitutes are not allowed.

ROUTESSuper Eight Challenge: Turn left outside Matilda International Hospital gate along the back of Mount Kellett Road until the intersection with Homestead Road. Take Homestead Road until the end, and loop back to the right and on to the front of Mount Kellett Road to return to the main gate of the Hospital. Serious / Fun Challenge: Turn left outside Matilda International Hospital gate along the back of Mount Kellett Road until the intersection with Homestead Road. Take Homestead Road until the end, and loop back to the right and on to the front of Mount Kellett Road to return to the main gate of the Hospital.

START / FINISHTeams start in pairs. Starting positions are decided by ballot before the Race. If any member of the team puts a foot across the start line before its starting signal, there is a one minute penalty.

The teams end the Race when the head of the passenger (or in the case of schools and ladies teams, the front frame of the chair) crosses the finish line. It is not necessary for all members of the team to be across the line at the finish. Teams must display the allocated chair number prominently on the front of the chair. If chair numbers are not clearly visible to the timekeepers, an official time cannot be given.

FITNESS / RUNNINGParticipants MUST be physically fit. Neither Matilda International Hospital nor Sedan Chair Race Committee members accept responsibility for any injuries or illness incurred during practice or the actual Race. Teams run on the left unless overtaking.

COMPLAINTSComplaints by teams against each other will not be entertained.

AWARDSNo team may win more than one award in any category on Race Day.

PENALTYContravention of any of the rules and regulations will lead to either immediate disqualification or the award of a time penalty at the discretion of the Race Director. The Race Director’s decision on race day will be final. Team’s may lodge an appeal in writing within seven days from the date of the race to the Race Committee for consideration with suitable justification and evidence where required.

Rules of the Sedan Chair Race

RUNNING FOR HONG KONG CHARITIES

Teams receive recognition for different achievements in the Sedan Chair Race. Awards are presented for Fastest, “Fun” and Fundraising.

Prizes for the fastest teams are easily determined on the day, based on their Race times.

The fun awards are determined by a select panel of Judges. Over the years this has become more difficult as the number of teams increase and the decoration and costumes become more fantastic.

On Race Day itself Judges have the opportunity to meet the teams at the line up before the Race as well as judge the teams on the course itself.

The Judged Awards are:

Joyce Smith Founder’s Trophy - The most coveted prize; awarded to the team that best captures the ‘Spirit of the Event’. Judges are looking for teams entering into the spirit of things, not just the Race itself but team participation and fundraising efforts. Past achievements are also taken into consideration: possibly a team entering year after year, making an effort to decorate the chair with limited funds, never receiving an award…but returning to support the Race for the sake of participation; it might be a physically/mentally challenged team. Judging for this Award also takes place on the Course.

DFS Group Ltd Public Spirited Trophy - Awarded to the ‘Most Entertaining Team’. Judges are looking for teams that amuse, perform and entertain, NOT only for judges, but also for public enjoyment throughout the Race and along the Course itself. Judging also takes place on the Course.

The Bank of East Asia Trophy - Presented to the team with the ‘best decorated sedan chair’ -- the key word here being “chair”. Points are awarded for theme, decoration, creativity etc. Differentiation is noted for professionally-decorated chairs and ‘home made’ efforts.

Mr and Mrs Galbraith’s Award - Presented to the ‘best dressed team’. Judges are looking for creativity in apparel and theme, amount of effort put into the costumes and how well the team carries this off!

First Gold Cup - Andy Naylor Encouragement & Recognition of Team Spirit Awarded to the team that show outstanding effort, positive attitude and demonstrate a united team effort. In addition, will also award to those, throughout the years, have been continuously supporting Sedan Chair Charities Fund in terms of team donations, special donations and even other alternative, substantial supports to help make our fundraising effort more successful.

Last but not least are the Fundraising Awards.

Fundraising for those less fortunate than ourselves is the essence of the Sedan Chair Race. The fundraising awards are to inspire and motivate teams to raise more than the minimum pledge required to participate in the Event. The best fundraising achievers are acknowledged in the Spring of 2014 at the Cheque Presentation Ceremony. There are several categories.

Judging Notes

RUNNING FOR HONG KONG CHARITIES

DFS Group Ltd Public Spirited Trophy -

The Bank of East Asia

Mr and Mrs Galbraith’s Award -

The Matilda International Hospital Chairman’s Trophy:
