What is VMware Virtual SAN?
Virtual SAN (VSAN) is a software based distributed storage solution
which is built directly in the hypervisor. This is not a virtualappliance like many of the other solutions out there, this sits right
inside the ESXi layer.

VSAN has nothing to do with SAN in a
traditional sense
Leverages the local storage from a
number of ESXi hosts which are part of a
cluster
A distributed vSan Datastore created
leveraging the local storage from each ofthe ESXi hosts
Can then be used for VM placement
Supports a range of core vSphere
technologies like vMotion, DRS &
vSphere HA
Big value is easy management and VM-
centric management

Customers Pain Points from VMware
Customers Report Three Main Pain Point Areas
It takes 3 minutes to create a VM, but 5 days to place onthe right datastore
Setting up storage requires too much time
I end up using buying high performance hardware evenwhen I dont need it
There is too much unused capacity that I cannot leverage
Datastores are like a box of chocolates, you never knowwhat youre going to get!
It is hard to troubleshoot performance issues with multiplevmdk in a volume

Some Definitions from VMware Blogs
High availability as well as scale-out storage functionality
Both a converged platform (of both compute and storage) as
well as hybrid storage solution (since it leverages both SSDsand traditional spinning disks)
it's not a traditional storage array: it's a software-basedstorage array that uses clusters of commodity server hardwareto do its work. Storage and compute workloads run together
on the exact same resource pool

Storage Policies Details Stripe width = The # of physical disks across which each replica of a storage
object are striped. The higher the value specified, the higher the performance(throughput and bandwidth) realized from the underlying physical disks by the
storage object. Striping is on magnetic disks only
Component Failures To Tolerate= Defines the # of hosts and/or diskfailures a storage object can tolerate. For n failures tolerated, n+1 copies ofthe object are created and 2n+1 hosts are required. Default is 1. If set to 0no data will be mirrored outside the host (not recommended obviously)
Proportional Capacity= % of the logical size of the storage object thatshould be reserved during initialization
Read Cache Reservation= Flash capacity reserved as read cache for thestorage object. Specified as a % of the logical size of the storage object
Force Provisioning = If set to a non-zero value, the object will be provisioned
even if the policy specified in the storage service class is not satisfied bythe datastore.
Object Space Reservation = This capability defines the percentage of thelogical size of the storage object that should be reserved on HDDs duringinitialization.

80/88
EMC CONFIDENTIALINTERNAL USE ONLY 88
Possible Q/A Q. Is VMware competing with EMC with their Virtual SAN announcement?
A. No. Virtual SAN represents a new server-based storage architecture allowing IT departments to better utilizeinternal server direct-attached storage (DAS). This is a relatively new to the industry that represents green field
opportunity for EMC and VMware.
Q. Will Virtual SAN compete with EMCs recent acquisition of ScaleIO?
A. No. Both Virtual SAN and ScaleIO enable new server-based storage architectures. Virtual SAN appeals stronglyto the VM Administrator because it simply presents a data store abstraction for vSphere VMs and it is tightlyintegrated with vSphere resource management. Virtual SAN is also designed for the vSphere level of scale 10-32nodes being common. ScaleIO differs from Virtual SAN in that it provides standard interfaces for any blockworkload in any virtualized environment. It is also designed for the 10-10,000 node level of scale. Between EMC
and VMware we are poised to maximize the revenue opportunity in this emerging segment of the market.
Q. Are you worried that companies will now run all of their applications on Server DAS and cannibalizeEMCs core storage business?
A. No. Data Center workloads have different requirements in terms of performance, capacity and service level. We believe workloads that require less stringent service levels, and/or have high IO performance requirements thatbenefits from the co-location of compute and storage are strong candidates to utilize this new architecture.Smaller-scale VDI deployments, ROBO and test & dev use cases are good examples. In their initial release, thatswhere technologies such as Virtual SAN and ScaleIO are positioned.
Q. Why is EMC partnering with VMware on Virtual SAN? Doesnt it replace EMC technology instead ofcomplementing it?
A. EMC believes Server-based storage is a new and exciting way to deploy some data center workloads, thats whywe acquired ScaleIO. That said, in a VMware environment we believe many customers will prefer the tightintegration of Virtual SAN. This all represents incremental Total Addressable Market for EMC and VMware.
Possible Q/A
7/26/2019 20131018 -- ltimas noticias de VMware & Cisco. Actualizacin del impacto en VCE y EMC.pptx
81/88
EMC CONFIDENTIALINTERNAL USE ONLY 89
Q. What kind of EMC technology will EMC be providing to these new systems ? Surely all that is neededis VSAN and commodity hardware ?
A. Earlier this year EMC announced a range of XtremSF PCIe flash cards providing the fastest and most denseHHHL cards in the industry. XtremSF is the perfect complement to VSAN in the server. In addition, these newsystems will need to protected against data loss and outages which is an opportunity for Recoverpoint, Avamar andData Domain. In addition, in certain VDI configurations, we see users storing user files on NAS devices such asVNX/VNXe.
Q. With VMwares plans for a broader storage portfolio arent they going to compete increasingly withEMC over time?
A. Storage consumption is growing rapidly across all industries and to deal with that growth we are seeing newemerging storage architectures (e.g. server-based storage). Through our federated business model, EMC will
address the largest possible swath of the total addressable market. In addition to server-based storage, wereseeing increased demand for all flash arrays, object storage and, more broadly, software-defined storage
Q. Doesnt VMware and its Storage-Based Policy Manager along with Virtual SAN compete with EMCsrecently announced ViPR product ? Seems like you're clouding each others definition of Software-Defined Storage.
A. ViPR must support the needs of VMware environments, physical environments and heterogeneous hypervisorenvironments such as Hyper-V and KVM. VMW will primarily serve the needs of the VMware environment. Thisdrives the need for both technologies along with integration between the two. We will integrate with VMwares
SPBM on the control plane side of things, and through vVol on the data plane.
Q. Will VCE replace EMC storage with Virtual SAN inside of VBlocks?
A. No. VCE will continue to engineer, ship, and support EMC storage technologies as a part of the standard bill ofmaterials for Vblock Systems. VCE uses best-of-breed (external) storage from EMC, best-of-breed networkingfrom Cisco and best-of-breed virtualization and management from VMware. VCE has no plans to produce Vblocksusing internal storage due to service levels etc.

Ciscos Acquire Flash Startup Whiptail
Key Messages:
Cisco has made it clear to the market and their ecosystem that theydo not intend to get into the external storage market, and willcontinue to align with EMC on our VCE and VSPEX collaborativeinitiatives.
Cisco intends to use the Whiptail technology to form a solid-statememory tier that will be embedded in the Cisco UCS server (server-based flash) and in the UCS switch fabric. This is a part of the marketin which EMC partners on the hardware side and adds value insoftware, which will enable EMC to extend our partnership with Cisco.
From our perspective, EMC has clear strategy of partnering on server
flash hardware. Earlier this year we announced that our XtremSWCache software offering would be supported, running on a number of3rd party PCIe Flash Cards. Our recently acquired ScaleIO softwareoffering runs on any industry standard server hardware.

Cisco has stated that Whiptail technology will be used to build a solid-state memory tierwithin UCS. They have also stated that they are not entering the external storage market.
Will this remove the need for EMC's Server Flash Products?
EMC's strategy on the server is to provide software to take advantage of flash. If Whiptailis forming the basis of a solid-state memory tier for UCS then there is potential for us to
extend our partnership with Cisco using their hardware and our software. Will Whiptail's products be included in VSPEX?
We have no plans at this time.
Will Whiptail 's products be included in Vblock?
There is no change to the VCE GTM. VCE is a converged cloud infrastructure company
innovating technology in systems products featuring Compute and Network technologyfrom Cisco, Storage & Data Protection from EMC, and Server Virtualization andVirtualization Management from VMware.
