converge in beautiful, scenic Central Oregon to take part in the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. 2014 marks the 18th year for this event and is expected to draw over 6,000 athletes. Pacific Crest has become known as the jewel of multi-sport events in the Northwest and is a destination race for competitors from across the nation as well from around the world!

The Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival includes the Tour de Crest Bike Tours, Long Course Triathlon, Endurance Duathlon, Marathon & Half-Marathon, Olympic Distance Triathlon & Duathlon, 5K & 10K Run/Walks, a Kids Splash Pedal-N-Dash Triathlon and 1-Mile & ½-Mile Dashes for ages 12 & under. – There’s something for everyone!

ABOUT TEAM IN TRAINING® Bruce Cleland had no idea of the kind of impact he was going to have on the lives of

THREE RIVERS CARE FOR KIDSPACIFIC CREST OFFICIAL YOUTH BENEFICIARY

Three Rivers Care for Kids Foundation was founded in 2003 and serves approximately 2,000 kids under the age of 18 in the area between Bend and La Pine, Oregon. Funds raised support many children’s activities including: Healthy Beginnings free health screenings; New Generations low-income day care; enhanced science and math programs and field trips for the local K-8 public school; grants to offset “pay-to-play” activities fees for low-income kids to participate in school athletics; grants to local 4-H clubs, Boy Scouts, Lego Robotics competition, building bus stop shelters and providing scholarships for parenting classes. Proceeds from the Kids Splash Pedal-N-Dash and Kids Dash go directly to benefit their efforts.

CENTRAL OREGON NON-PROFITS, ORGANIZATIONS & OTHER GREAT CAUSES

Pacific Crest has had the opportunity to contribute over $545,000 to numerous Central Oregon non-profit groups, including but not limited to: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Campfire, 4-H, Habitat for Humanity, High School sports and educational programs, and various Central Oregon P.E.O. groups. Additionally, Pacific Crest has been utilized by numerous charities as a fundraising vehicle for their causes, including TEAM DEFEAT MS which has had athletes from around the country come together at Pacific Crest to raise over $180,000 for MS research through their participation!

The Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival begins Friday morning, June 27, and the celebration continues through Sunday, June 29. The weekend includes a Sports & Fitness Expo, food court, Deschutes Brewery Beer Garden including wine from Columbia Winery and Eppa Sangria, live entertainment, fun for the entire family, and to top it off, some of the best competitive racing you will find in the country. Bartholomew Productions band, Hit Machine, has been widely renowned as the "Northwest's Favorite Party Band" headlining such notable events as Hood to Coast, Fort Vancouver Fireworks and performing at many Portland Trail Blazer playoff games. Hit Machine's playlist knows no genre boundaries as HM has always been about, "ALL things to

ALL people." Any song is on the table as long as it was a major HIT! Lead singer Bart Hafeman along with Hit Machine were recently chosen to open for 80's pop sensation REO Speedwagon at the Clark County Amphitheater!

THE VILLAGE BAR & GRILLThe Village Bar & Grill is considered Sunriver’s neighborhood restaurant and local waterin’

hole, where you can enjoy an exceptionally relaxed dining experience. The restaurant offers a lunch and dinner “American Fare” menu featuring salads, burgers, sandwiches, steaks, seafood and a variety of specialty dishes. The wine list is short, food-friendly and unpretentious. The bar has a reputation for making great drinks and providing a fine selection of beer. The Village Bar & Grill offers sports on six TVs and the bar area features five Lottery machines. TRIATHLONS & DUATHLONS: The start is at NORTH WICKIUP BOAT RAMP at Gull Point. This is located 3.15 miles south of FS Hwy 42 on FS Road 4260, and 1.85 miles south of Twin Pines Resort. Take South Century Drive (becomes FS Hwy 42) from Sunriver approximately 25 miles to FS Road 4260, which is signed as the access road to Twin Lakes Resort. ALTITUDE: 4,700 feet. CLIMATE: Days range in the mid-seventies, with nights in the mid to lower forties.

AUXILIARY PARKING SATURDAY & SUNDAYNew this year is an auxiliary parking area. Participants and spectators driving

from Bend to Sunriver Saturday or Sunday can head south on Highway 97 and take the Cottonwood Road (Exit 151). Drive 1.5 miles to the new parking area on the left. Signs and volunteers will be on hand to help with parking. Shuttle buses will run between the auxiliary parking and the Athletes Village.

Parking/Shuttle Hours: Saturday 6:30am - 7:00pm Sunday 6:30am - 5:00pm

GENERAL PARKINGParking is prohibited on the roadsides within Sunriver. To ensure the continuation of this

unique Central Oregon event, we ask that Pacific Crest participants and guests abide by ALL parking restrictions and regulations. Please park in designated parking lots/areas only! Shuttle buses are available on Saturday and Sunday. (see above)

CAMPING AT NORTH WICKIUP RESERVOIR (GULL POINT): The Forest Service has a campground adjacent to the T-1 (Swim / Bike Transition) start

area. It can be utilized on a first come, first served basis. For more information on the Central Oregon and Bend areas, contact one of the below organizations:

PACKET PICKUP/REGISTRATIONParticipants can register and/or pick up their race packets on Friday, June 27, from

10:00am to 8:00pm at the Packet Pickup/Registration tent in Athletes Village or Saturday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm for Sunday races. Day of Race Packet Pickup: No packet pickup or registration for Triathlons or Duathlons on day of race. Marathon & Half-Marathon, 5K & 10K events can register and pick-up packets on the morning of their perspective events (see specific race schedules).

WRISTBANDSAll athletes receive a wristband in their packet - yellow for running events, and pink

& green for Triathlon & Duathlons. The wristband allows entry into the Athlete Pavilion (which is open to PC athletes only). Long Course Triathletes & Duathletes get a pink wristband, which gives them entry into the Transitions on Friday from 12:00pm to 8:00pm, and Saturday from 6:00am to 11:00am. Olympic Distance Athletes receive a green wristband that will allow entry to T-1 (Swim / Bike Transition) on Saturday from 12:00pm

PARKINGParking is prohibited on the roadsides within Sunriver. To ensure the continuation of this unique

Central Oregon event, we ask that Pacific Crest participants and guests abide by ALL parking restrictions and regulations. Please park in designated parking lots/areas only! Shuttle buses are available on Saturday and Sunday.

New this year is an auxiliary parking area. Participants and spectators driving from Bend to Sunriver will head south on Highway 97 and take the Cottonwood Road (Exit 151). Drive 1.5 miles to the new parking area on the left. Signs and volunteers will be on hand to help with parking.

SHOWERSShowers are available at the SHARC. The SHARC is located 1/4 mile from the Athletes Village,

along the Beaver Drive bike path. Shower passes can be picked up at the Information Tent in the Sports & Fitness Expo. Participants must bring their own towels. Rinse Showers are available at the finish line after the races.

PACIFIC CREST WEEKEND SPORTS FESTIVAL MERCHANDISEEach participant will receive a Pacific Crest Commemorative Tech Shirt and Finisher

Medal. Other commemorative merchandise, including Finisher Shirts with the Pacific Crest Motto: “Sea Level is for Sissies!” can be purchased at the PC Merchandise Tent in the Sports & Fitness Expo.

AWARD PRESENTATIONS

Special Award Plaques and Prizes will be presented to the Overall Male & Female champions and Overall Masters Male & Female champions for each event. (Overall Male & Female, and Masters Male & Female will be removed from the individual age division awards.) Division Award Medals: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each individual age division, as well as the Open & Masters Clydesdale and Athena divisions will receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal. The 1st and 2nd place teams in each relay division will also receive Gold or Silver Division Award Medals.

LOST AND FOUNDLost and Found is located at Volunteer Check-in at Building 13 near the Pacific Crest

Information Tent. Be sure to mark all your gear with your name and race number prior to coming to the event.

SHARC - Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation CenterThe SHARC is open year round, and most of the facility is open to the general public.

Public areas include: indoor and outdoor recreation pools, outdoor adult hot tub, outdoor lazy river, two water slides, tot pool and sand play area, cafe, picnic area, playground, basketball court, bocce ball court, tubing hill and warming pavilion, event/meeting rooms and outdoor amphitheater. Private areas reserved for owners and their guests include a fitness center, living room and outdoor patio. The SHARC is the location of the Start Lines for the Tour de Crest Bike Rides and the Kids Splash Pedal-n-Dash held on the Friday of Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival.

KIDS EVENTS (See pages 20 & 21 for more details)Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival would not be complete

without events for the kids. Pacific Crest will host three events for the kids ages 12 & under. These events benefit the Three Rivers Care for Kids Foundation. The Kids Splash Pedal-n-Dash takes place Friday afternoon at 4:00pm at the SHARC, with the finish at the main finish line in the Athletes Village. The course is well marked and monitored, and the event is timed but non-competitive. Kids who participate will receive a commemorative T-shirt and finisher medal. Sunday, the non-competitive Kids 1-Mile and ½-Mile Dashes take place starting at 8:00am in the Athletes Village. Kids will receive a commemorative T-shirt and finisher medal. Bring your kids, watch them race and support the Three Rivers Care for Kids Programs while having some great family fun!

TOUR DE CREST BIKE RIDES - FRIDAY 7:30am - 26-mile & 55-mile RidesTour de Crest Packet Pickup/Registration will take place on Thursday (6/26) from 3:00pm

until 5:00pm in the Registration Tent in Athletes Village, and Friday (6/27) from 6:00am to 7:15am at Packet Pickup/Registration located at the SHARC.

AA Sports is excited to offer the Tour de Crest Bike Tours as part of the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. Pacific Crest brings hundreds of families to beautiful Sunriver & Central Oregon, and our goal with these two bike rides is to provide an opportunity for the non-triathletes in the family to ride on part of the Long Course Triathlon or all of the Olympic Triathlon portions of the courses the triathletes themselves will compete on during the weekend. These rides also offer an opportunity for the whole family to participate together in the same event.

The roads used are well maintained, with very little traffic. The routes do not include any ultra-steep grades, and the scenery is spectacular! Make one of the Tour de Crest events part of your family getaway and enhance your enjoyment of Pacific Crest Weekend!

Both rides start at the SHARC and finish at the official Finish Line at Athletes Village. A bike holding area will be available at the finish line. Rental Bikes are available at the Village Bike & Ski in Athletes Village.

Kids Splash, Pedal-n-Dash 1/2-Mile & 1-Mile dash

Lots of fun is in store for our Pacific Crest Kids. The beneficiary of the Kids events at Pacific Crest is Three Rivers Care for Kids Foundation. Three Rivers Care for Kids Foundation promotes the education and welfare of children in the Three Rivers area of southern Deschutes County, between Bend and La Pine. The Foundation funds extra-curricular activities (field trips, science lab work, etc.) at the local Three Rivers public school. For more information about the Three Rivers Care for Kids Foundation visit www.threeriverskidsfoundation.org.

All Kids events are non-competitive. Each participant receives a commemorative finisher medal and t-shirt, as well as plenty of applause when they cross the Finish Line. Registration for Kids events takes place at the Packet Pickup/Registration tent on Friday (for the Kids Splash Pedal-n-Dash); and Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the ½-Mile and 1-Mile Dashes. Please note: registration closes 30 minutes prior to the start of each event.

FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 4:00pm KIDS SPLASH PEDAL-N-DASH – ages 12 & under

Our traditional Splash Pedal-n-Dash is staged at the SHARC, within walking distance of the Athletes Village. Bikes may be dropped off at the SHARC back parking lot from 1:30pm to 3:30pm but you may not park your car there. Kids start the event in the SHARC Amphitheater, maneuvering through an inflatable obstacle course and wading pools. Then they’re directed to the parking lot transition area to get their bikes. Older racers, ages 9 to 12, exit the parking lot on the north and circle the SHARC, then follow the bike path to the back side of the Community Church parking lot. Younger racers, ages 4 to 8, exit the parking lot on the south and ride on the bike path to the back side of the church. Kids enter the transition area at the church, drop their bikes there, and are directed out to the run path along Abbot Drive and on to toward the Finish Line at Athletes Village. Access to and from the SHARC is via the Beaver Drive path. Parents can meet their children at the Finish Line. Below is a guideline for the transition areas, start times and how to prepare your child for this event. Maps will be provided at the Packet Pickup/Registration tent in Athletes Village.

1:30pm Transition area at SHARC opens for bike check-in. Volunteers will help place your child’s bike. Handlebars should be facing north for ages 9 to 12 and south for ages 4 to 8. Please hold onto your child’s bike helmet, as they will need to wear it at the start of the Splash.

3:45pm Transition area closes. All bikes must be staged in the transition area at this

time. Parents should be in the spectator area in the SHARC Amphitheater. Please do not climb over, under or through the fencing/flagging.

Please DO NOT allow kids to get close to the red timing mats by the pools before the start of the event, as their time will be activated. If you want two of your children to go together and they are in different age groups, please have them start with the younger group. All starts are in a time-trial format, two starting at a time through the slide/wading pools. Kids must have their SHOES, BIB AND BIKE HELMET ON AT THE START. Please write your phone number on the back your child’s race bib and the bike bib so we can call you if you forget to pick up the bike.

Bikes may be picked up from the Community Church parking lot transition area after the event is completed.

Parents may watch and take pictures from behind the fencing/flagging during the Splash and as the kids begin the Pedal (bike) leg of the race. Parents may meet up with their kids on the run course, or they can take the Beaver Drive path to the Athletes Village to meet their kids at the finish line. Always use gates to cross, and do not cross over, through or under any fencing/flagging. This is necessary to maintain a safe environment for all.

Safety tip: Write your name and cell phone number on the back of your child’s race bib and bike bib at the registration table.

The Pacific Crest Long Course Triathlon is hailed as one of the most scenic courses in the country. It also serves as the TRI NW Long Course Championship.

BIKE TRANSPORT TO T-1 (Swim / Bike Transition) at Gull Point Boat Ramp at Wickiup Reservoir

Arrange to have your bike transported to T-1 and eliminate the need to travel to the lake prior to the race. Bring your bike to the Cog Wild Shuttle booth at the Athletes Village after you pick up your race packet and put your number on your bike. Cog Wild will safely transport your bike to T-1 for $10 per bike, where it will be placed at your designated space in the transition zone.

Bike transport for Saturday racers is Friday from 10:00am - 6:00pm.Email Cog Wild at [email protected] with the day you need a shuttle. Shuttling without

pre-confirmation can be arranged by visiting / bringing your bike to the Cog Wild booth in Athletes Village Friday.

COURSESSWIM — 1.2 miles — Participants make one clockwise diamond-shaped loop in

the crystal clear waters of Wickiup Reservoir at Gull Point. MARKING: Large buoys designate the swim course. Kayakers, medics, and the Coast Guard Reserve are positioned on the water to support the swimmers. WMI and La Pine Fire & Rescue are present on the beach to provide medical / safety support. WATER TEMPERATURE: Water temperature is expected to be in the lower to mid-60s. The lake temperature will be taken on Friday (posted at the info tent in Athletes Village) and the morning of the race. Wetsuits are recommended. Practice swimming prior to race day is at your own risk.

BIKE — 58 miles — A scenic point-to-point course that travels over gently rolling hills prior to three hard climbs as you make your way around Mt. Bachelor. Cyclists leave the transition zone and ride for approximately 3.15 miles and turn left onto FS Hwy 42. Riders travel another 4.55 miles, cross the Deschutes River, then turn right onto FS Hwy 46 (the Cascades Lakes Hwy). It’s another 32.8 miles before the next (right) turn onto FS Hwy 45. Within this section there will be long stretches of flat to gently rolling hills, followed by three challenging climbs. It continues with a 2.5-mile steep decline to the intersection of FS Hwys 45 & 46. The decline flattens out considerably after making the turn onto FS Hwy 45, but continues for another 10 miles or so. After turning left onto FS Hwy 40 at about the 51.9-mile mark, it is relatively flat for the final 4.4 miles, finishing at T-2 at Three Rivers School in Sunriver Business Park.

BIKE ELEVATIONS: The first climb begins just past Elk Lake Resort, approximately 27 miles into the bike course. Just north of Elk Lake, the course begins to climb for approximately 650 ft, passing Devils Lake before reaching a flat spot, then climbing again to Todd Lake (elev. 6,150 ft). Next is another flat spot, at about the 35-mile mark, before the final climb to the entrance to Mt. Bachelor (6,500 ft, about 38 miles into the ride). Riders will enjoy a 14+ mile downhill section. The first 2.5 miles are steep with a sharp 90-degree turn onto FS Hwy 45. *CAUTION: The 14-mile downhill section includes a 90-degree right hand turn from FS Hwy 46 (Cascades Lakes Hwy) onto FS Hwy 45. Please slow down when making

this turn. A sign “Slow Down” is placed ¼-mile prior to this turn. Please use common sense and reduce your bike speed appropriately in order to make a safe turn. EMS support is located along the bike course.

BIKE COURSE HYDRATION STATIONS: Water and Heed Electrolyte will be available at the hydration stations. (Note: participants must toss empty water bottles to the Hydration Station personnel before receiving a new one - this is to prevent debris along this scenic highway.) Do not expect to have your tossed water bottles returned to you. Hydration stations are located at approximately the 17.1-mile, 31.4-mile and the 38-mile mark locations. They are located at wide turnouts in the road and on an incline, so it should not be necessary for you to slow down. Participants are responsible for carrying their own food supplements. DO NOT LITTER the roadway with any bottles or wrappers. Littering is an automatic disqualification as it affects our ability to maintain a permit with the USFS. Porta Potties are located at each hydration station.

RUN – 13.1 miles - From T-2, participants run a 13.1-mile course circling Sunriver on wide, paved, very scenic asphalt bike paths, through meadows and forests, past rivers, beautifully landscaped golf greens and summer homes. MARKING: The run course is marked with white lime and pink directional signs, and monitored by volunteers. Each mile is marked with a purple mileage sign. The run course, including mile markers, will be marked by Thursday morning. PORTA POTTIES: Located approximately every mile at each hydration station. A CLIF SHOT Energy Zone with CLIF SHOT Energy Gels is located just before mile 9.

COMMUNICATIONS: Every hydration station on the run course has radio communication with the finish line and the course managers. Contact someone at a hydration station if you need assistance.

RACE START: Participants should be positioned at the race start by 8:45am for pre-event instructions. TRIATHLETES: Wave starts will be noted on your race packet and posted on the website. The first swim wave will leave at 9:00am. DUATHLETES: 9:00am Time-Trial start with two riders starting approximately every 15 seconds. Cyclists form two parallel lines six feet back from the bike start timing mats. Order is first in line, first to depart.

EQUIPMENT/ITEMS AT TRANSITION AREAS & FINISH LINE: Each participant should bring two large towels (one for each transition zone). These are to be used to designate your space at your assigned bike rack (based on race number). Participants receive one plastic bag with their race number on it at Packet Pickup. This bag is to be used at T-1 (Swim / Bike transition) to contain all of your personal items (including wetsuit) for transport back to T-2 at Three Rivers School. Each participant MUST place all their personal items in their bag themselves, and then tie the bag closed. Loose items will be turned in to Lost & Found at Volunteer Check In/Building 13, near the Pacific Crest Info tent. Participants are to bring their run items to T-2 between 12:00pm and 8:00pm on Friday, or between 6:00am and 7:30am on race day. All personal items must be picked up at T-2 within two hours after completing the race, or no later than 6:00pm. IMPORTANT: All personal items must be marked with your race bib number. For the safety of your equipment, only participants are allowed to pick up their equipment by displaying their race number and wristband.

T-1 (SWIM / BIKE TRANSITION) at North Wickiup Boat Ramp: A hydration station with water and Heed Electrolyte is located at T-1. Swimmers exit the water and cross the timing mats on their way to the transition area. TEAMS must make a conversion by touching

fingertips in the designated “Relay Tag” area at each transition. The finishing swimmer for each team must turn in their Timing Chip at T-1. Participants must place all of their belongings into the plastic bag marked with their race number and tie it closed prior to exiting the transition area to begin the bike leg. Race Officials are not responsible for any unmarked, non-bagged items left at the transition zone. Loose/unmarked items will be taken to Lost & Found at Volunteer Check In/Building 13, near the Pacific Crest Info tent. The bag containing your personal items will be transported back to T-2 at Three Rivers School for pick up after completing the race. Participants must walk or run their bike out of the transition area and cross the timing mats before mounting their bike (just past “Bike Mount” sign), and helmets must be worn and fastened prior to mounting your bike.

T-2 (BIKE / RUN TRANSITION): T-2 is located at Three Rivers School at the Sunriver Business Park. A hydration station with water and Heed Electrolyte, as well as Porta Potties, is located at T-2. Participants need to have staged their run equipment at the transition area prior to leaving for the lake and the start of the race. Cyclists must dismount their bike prior to entering the transition area and crossing the timing mats. Participants must place all of their belongings on their towel at their designated bike rack location. This helps ensure that the athletes on either side of you do not mistakenly pick up your belongings. After making the transition, runners will exit the transition area running over a second set of timing mats and follow the markings directing them to the Sunriver bike path for the half-marathon run. TEAMS: The cyclist must make the conversion by touching the fingertips of their teammate at the designated “Relay Tag” area location. The cyclists for each team must turn in their Timing Chip at the team holding area in T-2.

SPECIAL NOTE: Absolutely No Parking is permitted on South Century Drive next to the T-2 Transition.

YOUR RACE PACKET: Packet Pickup is held on Friday from 10:00am until 8:00pm at the Packet Pickup/Registration tent in Athletes Village. There is no day of race registration or packet pickup. Packets not picked up will be at the lake race morning by 6:30am, but please make every effort to pick up your packet before race morning.

RACE BIB NUMBER: Place your bib number on either your race belt or on a piece of clothing to be worn during the run portion of the event. Your bib number must be visible on your front during the run and when you cross the finish line. This number should be placed on all personal items to be used during the event for identification purposes. Race belts may be purchased at the Pacific Crest Merchandise tent in the main Sports & Fitness Expo area in Athletes Village.

WRISTBAND: All Long Course triathletes and Endurance duathletes will receive a pink wristband at packet pickup, which should be worn at all times. This band identifies you as a race participant and assures that you receive entry into the race areas at designated times.

BIKE & HELMET NUMBERS: Each participant receives a bike and helmet number corresponding to their race number. Attach the bike number to your bike prior to taking it to Cog Wild or checking it in at the lake, and place the helmet number on the front of your helmet prior to the start of the race.

PLASTIC BAG: Each participant receives one plastic bag, clearly marked with their race number, to be used at T-1. All participants are responsible for placing their personal items into their pre-marked bags and tying the bag closed prior to leaving the transition

area during the race. The bag will be transported to T-2 at Three Rivers School for pickup after the race. It is very important that all personal items are marked with your race number.

SWIM CAPS (Triathletes): Swim caps are provided based on individual wave starts and must be worn and visible during the swim. DO NOT start outside of your designated wave start. Doing so may result in a DQ.

TRANSPORTATION: EQUIPMENT TRANSPORT TO THE LAKE: Participants are responsible for transporting

their bike and equipment to the reservoir prior to the start of the race. Security will be at the lake starting at 12:00pm on Friday. All bikes and gear left overnight at T-1 will be in a lighted area and guarded by security personnel. NOTE! Due to limited parking, it is recommended that all participants bring their bikes to T-1 on Friday and take the shuttle bus to the reservoir Saturday morning. This also allows a preview of the bike course. (As an alternative, please see the bike transportation service that is available under “Bike Transport to Lake” on page 26).

BUS TRANSPORT TO THE LAKE: Buses are available to transport participants and/or guests who have a pre-purchased bus pass to Gull Point Boat Ramp at Wickiup Reservoir. Buses will pick up passengers at T-2 at Three Rivers School. The first buses will leave at 6:00am with an approximate arrival time of 6:30am, and the last bus will leave at 8:00am with an approximate arrival time of 8:30am. The return bus for spectators will leave the lake at approximately 10:30am from North Wickiup Boat Ramp, returning to T-2. IMPORTANT: If you are taking the bus to the lake, please confirm your pre-purchased bus space and time Friday at the Information Booth in Athletes Village. NOTE: Estimated Bus times may vary due to unforeseen circumstances.

PARKING AT THE LAKE: Parking at North Wickiup Boat Ramp is limited. We recommend taking the bus. NO participants/spectators may park within the boat ramp parking lots themselves as the lower lot is used for the transition zone and the upper lot must be left available for general public lake users (permit requirement). Parking officials will be onsite to assist you in parking. VERY IMPORTANT!! Do not park on the either side of FS Rd. 4260 or within the campgrounds just to the north of the transition zone. You will be asked to move your vehicle immediately or you will be ticketed if your vehicle is left unattended. Please utilize the parking area permitted to the race by the US Forest Service. Maintaining the permit for this event will depend on your cooperation with these regulations.

All athletes are highly encouraged to bring their bike to T-1 on Friday between the hours of 12:00pm and 8:00pm. The bikes will be kept under lights and guarded by security officials until Saturday morning. Spectator vehicles are not permitted to follow the cyclists on the bike course. This is for the athletes’ safety and enjoyment. There are few bike lanes and very few places to pull over and cheer. So, following the bikes only leads to a congested and more dangerous ride for the participants.

DIRECTIONS TO THE NORTH WICKIUP BOAT RAMP: From Sunriver follow Spring River Rd. west for 0.6 miles and turn left (south) onto Century Dr. Continue on Century Dr. for 3.05 miles, and turn right (west) continuing on Century Dr. Continue west for 18.25 miles to FS Rd. 4260 and turn left onto FS Rd. 4260 - this is the turnoff for Twin Lakes. Continue on FS Rd. 4260 for 3.20 miles past Twin Lakes Resort to parking on FS Rd. 4262.

PRE-RACE PREPARATION Notes

· Ensure that your bike is in good working condition. Bike Tech (provided by Athletes Lounge) will be on-site at Packet Pickup/Registration Friday and at T-1 (Swim / Bike Transition) starting at 6:30am race day.

· Wristbands are color coded by day - Olympic distance athletes (green) are not allowed in the transition T-1 until 12:00pm on Saturday. Long Course distance athletes (pink) are not allowed in the T-1 after 12:00pm on Saturday.

· Attend the pre-race briefing and Q&A on Friday at 6:30pm by the Main Stage in Athletes Village.

· Be sure to keep well-hydrated.· Pick up your packet and Timing Chip on Friday between 10:00am and 8:00pm at

Packet Pickup/Registration in Athletes Village.· Mark all your personal property with your name and race bib number.· If you plan to take the bus to the lake, please reserve your space prior to race weekend.

Your pre-paid bus ticket will be in your race packet. On race day, check in at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled bus departure time. If there are any open bus times race weekend, they will be available for purchase at the Info Booth located in Athletes Village.

· Pin your bib number on a garment/race belt you will wear during the run. The bib must be placed on the front of your body, clearly visible as you cross the finish line.

· Set up your run gear at the T-2 (Bike / Run Transition) at the Three Rivers School in Sunriver Business Park on Friday between the hours of 12:00pm and 8:00pm, or on race day morning prior to departing for North Wickiup Reservoir.

· Put your bike number (found in your race packet) on your bike prior to bringing it into the transition zone at the reservoir, or before delivering it to the Cog Wild booth in Athletes Village for transport.

· Be sure that you have handlebar end plugs secured on your bike. Plugging the ends of your handlebars is required for safety.

· Check-in at the participant check-in area at the reservoir to get your body marked no

later than 8:30am. Make sure the markings are in the correct locations - race number on left calf and age on right calf. (Age is for your competitive benefit and is not a requirement.)· Have at least two full water bottles secured to your bike.· Find your pre-assigned bike space, and arrange your gear properly in each transition area.· Be sure you are familiar with the Rules of Competition. Tri NW Rules apply, and can be viewed at www.trinw.com or on pg 50-53 of this handbook. · Prior to starting the swim, all participants must have their Timing Chip securely fastened to their ankle, and it must be worn for the duration of the event. It is appropriate to wear it under your wet suit. RELAY TEAMS: Each team member must wear their own Timing Chip. Team members: be sure to turn in your assigned Timing Chip to a race volunteer at the hand-off location within the transition zone.· Report to the beach starting area at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the race.· Listen carefully to all pre-race instructions.· Once the race has started, be careful and considerate of volunteers, spectators and fellow competitors. Have a fun race!

PRACTICE SWIMMING at the LAKE: The event provides no lifeguards or medical personnel at the lake prior to race day. Crew members will be placing the buoy markers and buoys for observational purposes only. Any athlete wishing to swim prior to the day-of-race does so at their own risk. Be aware that Wickiup Reservoir is a popular fishing spot and boaters are not accustomed to encountering swimmers. Also, boats returning to the boat

ramp may be travelling at a higher rate of speed than normal.

POST-RACE NOTES· At the Finish Line, turn in your Timing Chip to the Finish Line officials. Teams: Swimmers

return their Timing Chips at T-1; cyclists turn Timing Chips in at T-2. Participants will be charged $30 for any Timing Chips not returned.

· If you need medical assistance at any time, ask a finish line official to lead you to the medical area.

· Drink sufficient fluids to maintain body equilibrium. If it is unusually humid or warm, be sure to drink lots of water.

· To collect your bike and racing gear, go to the T-2 area with your bib number and wristband. Only participants with a race bib number and correct color wristband will be allowed in the transition areas. The transition area will be staffed with security officials and volunteers.

· T-2 closes at 6:00pm. Competitors must remove all their gear prior to 6:00pm.· If you discontinue the race, please notify an official on the course or at the finish line and

return your Timing Chip at the finish line.· In the case of reported race violations; decisions by race management are final and binding.

COURSES The Marathon (26.2 miles) & Half-Marathon (13.1 miles) circle Sunriver on wide, paved,

very scenic asphalt bike paths. Marathoners receive their Half-Marathon split when passing Athletes Village to head out on a second loop around this beautiful course, which takes you through meadows and forests, past rivers, beautifully landscaped golf greens and summer homes. HYDRATION STATIONS with water and Heed Electrolyte, as well as PORTA-POTTIES, are located approximately every mile. A Clif Shot Energy Zone with Clif Shot Energy Gels is located just before mile 9. MARKING: The run course is marked with white lime and pink directional signs and is monitored by volunteers. Each mile is marked with yellow mileage signs for the marathon, and blue mile marker signs for the Half-Marathon. The run course and mile markers will be set by Thursday morning. COMMUNICATIONS: Every hydration station on the run course has radio communication with race officials at the Finish Line and with the Course Manager.

AWARDSAwards for the Marathon and Half-Marathon will be presented to the Overall Male

and Female, and the Overall Masters Male and Female Champions. (1st place overall male and female and masters male and female will be removed from the individual age division awards). The top three males and females in each individual age division (including Clydesdale & Athena divisions) will also receive awards.

START LOCATIONThe start location for the triathlon and duathlon is at Gull Point Boat Ramp at North Wickiup

Reservoir, in the heart of the Cascade Mountain Range, and both finish at Athletes Village in Sunriver, 15 miles south of Bend.

PACKET PICKUP/REGISTRATION Participants can register and/or pick up their race packets on Friday from 10:00am to

8:00pm or on Saturday from 12:00pm until 4:00pm at the Packet Pickup/Registration tent in Athletes Village.

BIKE SHIPPING Athletes who wish to ship their bikes ahead of the event can contact Village Bike & Ski in

Sunriver, Oregon (located at the Village) to arrange for payment terms and proper instruction. Village Bike & Ski requires that athletes who ship their bikes sign a release waiving the shop of any liability regarding the condition of the bicycle when it arrives. BIKE SHUTTLE TO T-1 (SWIM / BIKE TRANSITION) AT GULL POINT BOAT RAMP AT WICKIUP RESERVOIR

Have your bike transported to T-1 to eliminate the need to travel to the lake prior to the race. Bring your bike to the Cog Wild Shuttle booth in the Athletes Village after picking up your packet and putting your number on your bike. Cog Wild will safely transport your bike to T-1 for $10 per bike. The bike will be placed at your transition space. Bike transport for Sunday racers is Saturday from 12:00pm until 4:00pm. There is also a Saturday morning bike shuttle from Bend for Sunday racers. Email Cog Wild at [email protected] with your contact information and the day you need a shuttle. Participants can utilize the bike shuttle without pre-confirming by visiting or bringing their bike to the Cog Wild booth between 12:00pm and 4:00pm Saturday. The bike shuttle from Bend is by preregistration only.

COURSES SWIM - 1,500 meters. Participants make one diamond-shaped, clockwise loop in crystal

clear Wickiup Reservoir. MARKING: Large buoys designate the swim course. Kayakers, medics, and members of the Coast Guard Reserve will be positioned on the water to support the swimmers. WMI and La Pine Fire & Rescue will be present on the beach to provide medical / safety support. WATER TEMPERATURE: Water temperature is expected to be in the low to mid 60’s. The temperature will be taken on Friday and Saturday morning and it will be posted at the Info Tent in the Athletes Village. Wetsuits are recommended. NOTE: Practice swimming prior to race day is at your own risk.

BIKE – 28 miles. Scenic point-to-point course travels over gently rolling hills. ELEVATIONS: There is one climb of significance after turning from FS Road 4270 (access road passing Crane Prairie Reservoir) onto FS Hwy 40 (at about the 12-mile mark), then participants begin a sustained climb of about ¾ mile. The elevation gain is approximately 400 ft. HYDRATION STATION: There is NO water/electrolyte station on the bike course. It is highly recommended that cyclists have two full water bottles on their bikes during the ride. Participants are responsible for

carrying their own food supplements on the bike course. DO NOT LITTER THE ROADWAY with empty water bottles or food wrappers. Littering is an automatic disqualification, as it affects our ability to maintain a permit with the USFS. MARKING: The bike course is marked with mile markers and large pink directional signs at all turns. Volunteers, Police and/or Flaggers will also be present.

RUN — 10K: (See map on page 42) The mostly flat loop course on wide, paved bike paths traverses through the beautiful and scenic Sunriver community. There is one hill, with a minimal elevation gain. HYDRATION STATIONS: Hydration stations with water and Heed Electrolyte are located approximately every other mile on the run course, as well as at T-2 and at the Finish Line. Porta Potties are located at each Hydration Station, as well as at the start, at T-2, and at the Finish Line. A CLIF SHOT Energy Zone with CLIF SHOT Energy Gels is located just before mile 4. MARKING: The run course is marked with white lime and pink directional signs, and monitored by volunteers. Each mile is marked with an orange mileage sign. The run course, including mile markers, will be marked by Thursday. COMMUNICATIONS: Each hydration station on the run course will have radio communication with the Finish Line and the Course Manager. If you cannot finish the race, or need any assistance during the race, please notify a race worker at a hydration station or report it to the finish line. If you do not finish, please make sure that you return your Timing Chip at the Finish Line.

THE START: All participants must check in at the Participant Check-in Tent at T-1 at Gull Point Boat Ramp by 8:30am on race day. Participants should be positioned at the start by 8:45am for last minute instructions. The first swim wave will leave at 9:00am. Information about the start waves will be available at Packet Pickup/Registration on Friday and Saturday, as well as posted on the website. DUATHLETES: 9:00am Time-Trial start. Cyclists will form two parallel lines beginning six feet prior to the bike start timing mats, with two riders starting approximately every 15 seconds. Order is first in line, first to depart.

EQUIPMENT/ITEMS AT TRANSITION AREAS & FINISH LINE: All participants should bring two large towels (one for each transition area) to designate your space at your assigned bike rack within the transition zone. You will receive one plastic bag with your race number on it when picking up your race packet. This bag is to be used at T-1 for containing all of your personal items (including wetsuit) for transport back to T-2 at Three Rivers School. Each participant MUST place all their personal items in the bag themselves, and tie the bag shut. Loose items will be taken to Lost & Found at Volunteer Checkin/Building 13, near the Pacific Crest Info Tent until claimed. Participants are to bring their run items to T-2 starting at 6:00am on day of race. (No placement allowed Saturday). All personal items must be picked up at T-2 no later than 2:00pm on day of race.

IMPORTANT: All personal items must be marked with your race bib number to assure you are able to retrieve them. Both transition areas will have security present until noted close times. For the safety of your equipment, only participants are allowed to pick up their belongings, by showing their race number and wristband.

T-1 (SWIM / BIKE TRANSITION): A hydration station with water and Heed Electrolyte is available at T-1. Swimmers exit the water and cross the timing mats on their way to the transition area. TEAMS must make a conversion by touching fingertips within the designated area at each transition. The swimmer for each team must turn in their Timing Chip at the T-1 team area. Participants must place all of their belongings into the plastic bag marked with their race number and tie it shut prior to exiting the transition area to begin the bike leg. Race Officials are not responsible for any unmarked, non-bagged items left at the transition zone. The bag containing your personal items will be transported back to T-2 at Three Rivers School for pick up after completion of the race. Participants must walk or run their bike out of the transition area and cross the timing mats before getting on their bike. Helmets must be worn and fastened prior to mounting your bike.

T-2 (BIKE / RUN TRANSITION): T-2 is located at Three Rivers School in the Sunriver Business Park. A Hydration Station with water and Heed Electrolyte will be available. Porta Potties are located at the transition exit. Participants should have pre-positioned their run equipment in the transition area prior to leaving for the lake on race morning. Cyclists must dismount their bike prior to entering the transition area and must walk/run across the timing mats. Participants must place all of their belongings on their towel at their designated bike rack location. This will help insure that athletes on either side do not mistakenly pick up your belongings with theirs. After making the transition, runners exit the transition area, running over the second set of timing mats, and follow markings taking them to the Sunriver bike path for the 10K run. TEAMS: Cyclist must rack their bike and make a conversion by touching the fingertips of their teammate within the designated Relay Tag location beyond the bike racks. Team runners must check in at the designated tent at T-2 prior to starting their run leg. The finishing cyclists for each team must turn in their Timing Chip at T-2. All personal equipment from the lake will be available for pickup at the conclusion of the race in a secured area (Muscle Milk Star Tent) adjacent to T-2 (bike/run transition). You must show your race number and wristband to the race official in order to pick up your gear.

PARKING AT THE LAKE: Parking at North Wickiup Boat Ramp is limited. We recommend taking the bus. NO participants/spectators may park within the boat ramp parking lots themselves as the lower lot is used for the transition zone and the upper lot must be left available for general public lake users (permit requirement). Parking officials will be onsite to assist you in parking. VERY IMPORTANT!! Do not park on the either side of FS Rd. 4260 or within the campgrounds just to the north of the transition zone. You will be asked to move your vehicle immediately or you will be ticketed if your vehicle is left unattended. Please utilize the parking area permitted to the race by the US Forest Service. Maintaining the permit for this event will depend on your cooperation with these regulations.

We highly encourage all athletes to bring their bike to T-1 on Saturday between the hours of 12:00pm and 4:00pm. Bikes will be kept under lights and guarded by security officials until Sunday morning. Spectator vehicles are not permitted to

follow the cyclists on the bike course. This is for the athletes’ safety and enjoyment. There are few bike lanes and very few places to pull over, so following the bikes leads to a congested and compromised ride for the participants.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE NORTH WICKIUP BOAT RAMP (T-1): From Sunriver follow Spring River Rd. west for 0.6 miles and turn left (south) onto Century Dr. Continue on Century Dr. for 3.05 miles, and turn right (west) continuing on Century Dr. Continue west for 18.25 miles to FS Rd. 4260 and turn left onto FS Rd. 4260 - this is the turnoff for Twin Lakes. Continue of FS Rd. 4260 for 3.20 miles past Twin Lakes Resort to parking on FS Rd. 4262.

YOUR RACE PACKETPacket Pickup/Registration is held Friday from 10:00am until 8:00pm and on Saturday

from 12:00pm until 4:00pm in the Athletes Village. There is no day of race Packet Pickup or Registration in Athletes Village. Packets not picked up on Friday or Saturday will be transported to T-1 on race morning by 6:30am.

YOUR PACKET WILL INCLUDE:RACE BIB: Place your race bib on a piece of clothing that will be worn during the run

portion of the event. Your bib number must be visible on your front on the run course and when you come across the finish line. Once again, this number should be placed on all personal items that will be used during the event for identification purposes in case of loss.

BIKE & HELMET NUMBERS: Each participant receives bike and helmet numbers that correspond to the assigned race number. Please place the bike number on your bike prior to checking it in at T-1, and place the helmet number on the front of your helmet prior to the start of the race.

PLASTIC BAGS: Each participant receives one plastic bag with their number written on it, to be used at T-1. Each participant is responsible for placing all personal items into their pre-marked bag and for tying it closed prior to leaving the transition area during the race. The bag at T-1 will be transported back to Three Rivers School for pickup after the race. It is very important that all personal items are marked with your race number for identification purposes.

SWIM CAPS (Triathletes): Color coded swim caps are provided based on individual wave starts and must be clearly worn during the swim. DO NOT start outside of your designated wave start. Doing so may result in a disqualification.

WRISTBAND: Each participant will receive a green wristband that must be worn during the event. These bands provide entry into Athletes Village and the Transition areas. Limited Transition access — See Schedule pg 43.

TRANSPORTATION: EQUIPMENT TO THE LAKE: Participants are responsible for transporting their own bike

and equipment to the lake prior to the start of the race. Security will be at the lake starting at 12:00pm Saturday. All bikes and gear left overnight at T-1 will be under lights and guarded by security personnel. NOTE! Due to very limited parking it is recommended that all participants bring their bikes to T-1 on Saturday. This will also allow you to preview the bike course. (As an alternative: please see Cog Wild information on page 26 for bike shuttle to Wickiup Reservoir.)

BUS TRANSPORTATION TO THE LAKE: Shuttle buses are available to transport participants and guests to Gull Point Boat Ramp with a pre-purchased bus pass. Buses will pick up at T-2. The first buses will leave at 6:00am with an approximate arrival time at Gull Point of 6:30am, and the last bus will leave at 8:00am with an approximate arrival time of 8:30am. The return spectator bus will leave at approximately 10:00am from Gull Point, with a return to T-2 at Three Rivers School. IMPORTANT: If you are taking the bus to the lake, please confirm your pre-purchased bus space and time or purchase one on Friday or Saturday at the Information Booth in Athletes Village.

SOME BASICS· Wetsuits are recommended.· Bring two large towels for placing your items on in each of the transition areas.· Mark all equipment with your bib number and name to insure all items are identifiable.· Be sure to bring adequate clothing. Temperatures can vary from 38 to 90 degrees from midnight to mid-day.· Remember - We are guests of Central Oregon and Sunriver Resort. Please respect the area by not littering or defacing property.· Pick up your race packet and Timing Chip at Packet Pickup/Registration in Athletes Village on Friday from 10:00am to 8:00pm or Saturday from 12:00pm. to 4:00pm.· If you plan to take a shuttle bus to the lake, please reserve your space prior to race weekend. Your pre-paid bus ticket will be in your race packet. On race day, check in at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled bus departure time. If there are any open bus times on race weekend, they will be available for purchase at the Information Booth located in Athletes Village.

AWARDS: Awards will be presented to the Overall Male and Female, and the Overall Masters Male and Female champions. Overall Male and Female, and Masters Male and Female will be removed from the individual age division awards. The top three males and females in each individual age division (including optional Clydesdale & Athena divisions) will receive awards, along with the top two teams in each team division (men’s, women’s and mixed).

AGE DIVISIONS: Individual: 15 & under, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54,

55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80 & over, Clydesdales (men 198lbs) & Athena (women 150lbs) in Open (39 & under) and Masters (40 & over) divisions. Relay Team (Triathlon): combined three ages - 105 & under, 106 & over, in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed divisions.

PRE-RACE PREPARATION Notes· Ensure your bike is in good working condition. Bike Tech, provided by Athletes

Lounge, will be on-site in the expo during Packet Pickup/Registration on Friday and Saturday, and at T-1 starting at 6:30am race day.

· Make sure you keep well-hydrated prior to the race.· Pick up your race packet with Timing Chip on Friday between 10:00am and 8:00pm

or on Saturday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm in Athletes Village. Packets not picked up will be at T-1 by 6:30am race morning.

· Make sure all personal property is clearly marked with your race bib number and name.

· Pin your bib number on a garment or race belt, which will be worn during the run. The bib must be worn on the front of your body and be clearly visible as you cross the finish line.

· Set up your running equipment at T-2 on race day morning prior to departing for the lake.

· Put the bike number, found in your race packet, on your bike prior to bringing it into the transition zone or before turning your bike over to Cog Wild for transport.

· Be sure that you have handlebar end plugs securely in place. For participant safety, having the ends of handlebars plugged is a requirement.

· If you are taking the shuttle bus to the lake, please check in at the Information Booth in Athletes Village on Friday or Saturday to confirm your pre-purchased, scheduled bus time. On race day, check in at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled bus departure time.

· Check-in at the participant check-in area at Gull Point Boat Ramp no later than 8:30am to get your body marked. Check the markings to make sure they are correct - race number on left calf and age on right calf. (Age is for your competitive benefit and not a requirement.)

· Be sure to have two filled water bottles secured on your bike.· Find your pre-assigned bike space and arrange your gear properly for transition at

both transition areas.· Prior to swim start all participants must have their Timing Chip securely fastened to

their ankle. It must be worn for the duration of the event. It is appropriate to wear it under your wet suit. TEAMS: Each team member must wear their own assigned Timing Chip. (Team members, please remember to turn in your Chip at the hand-off location in T-1or T-2 after your segment of the competition is completed).

· Report to the starting area at least 15 minutes prior to race start for pre-race briefing.· Listen carefully to all pre-race instructions.· Review the Rules of Competition. Tri NW rules apply. www.trinw.com.· Once the race has started, be careful and considerate of volunteers, spectators,

and fellow competitors.· Have a fun and safe race!

PRACTICE SWIMMING at the LAKE: The event provides no lifeguards or medical personnel at the lake prior to race day. Crew members will be placing the buoy markers and buoys for observational purposes only. Any athlete wishing to swim prior to the day-of-race does so at their own risk. Be aware that Wickiup Reservoir is a popular fishing spot and boaters are not accustomed to encountering swimmers. And boats returning to the boat ramp may be travelling at a higher rate of speed than normal.

POST-RACE NOTES· At the completion of your race, turn in your Timing Chip to the Finish Line officials.

Teams: Swimmers turn in Timing Chips at T-1; cyclists turn in Timing Chips at T-2. Participants will be charged $30 for any Timing Chips not returned.

· If you need medical assistance or aid for any reason, ask a finish line official to lead you to the medical area.

· Drink the necessary fluids to maintain body equilibrium. If it is unusually humid or warm, be sure to drink lots of water.

· To collect your bicycle and racing gear at T-2, you must show your race bib number and wristband. For the security of your bike and gear, only athletes are allowed in the transition area. The transition area will be staffed with security officials.

· Pick up T-1 bags from T-2 at Three Rivers School. T-2 will close at 2:00pm. Competitors must remove all their gear by 2:00pm.

· If you are not able to complete the race, please notify an official on the course or at the Finish Line and return your Timing Chip to the Finish Line.

· In the case of reported race violations; decisions by the race management are final and binding. Rules can be found on pgs 50-53 in this race handbook, and on the TRI NW website: www.trinw.com.

Tri NorthWest Rules of CompetitionSWIM COURSE: Statement of Purpose

There is NOTHING more important than your Safety. The SWIM represents very real and unique dangers that are different from the BIKE or the RUN. The following rules and swim tips are provided to help ensure your safety, fairness of competition, and the enjoyment of the sport of triathlon.

· No fins, paddles, artificial propulsion equipment or flotation devices are allowed.· Swim goggles and faceplates may be worn.· For the beginner triathlete, if you are a slower swimmer, move to the rear and to the outside

of the swim group. This will result in a slightly longer swim distance, but will greatly reduce the chance of physical contact with another swimmer.

· Take notice where the swim course is directed and landmarks that may assist you during your swim prior to the start of the event. It is the athlete’s responsibility to sight the buoys and to stay on course, even if your vision is compromised by fogged goggles and sun in your eyes.

· If you need assistance, move to the inside of the swim course, raise and wave your hand, and yell for assistance. A water safety craft will be there immediately to help.

BIKE COURSE: Statement of PurposeThe safety of our participants on the Bike Course is our first priority. Next is to have a fair competition

that allows you to produce a time that is reflective of your individual effort, without any artificial enhancements or outside assistance.

HANDLEBAR END PLUGS It is a requirement that your bike is equipped with handlebar end plugs. [DQ #1] These can be

obtained from the bike tech support team if you do not have them.

WHERE TO RIDE ON THE ROADWAY AND BICYCLE SEPARATION· At all times AVOID the Centerline area of the roadway. That is the primary path of travel for the

Race Officials, Emergency Vehicles (Police, Fire, Ambulance, etc.), and normal vehicular traffic.· Except when passing, you must ride in single file with a minimum of three bike lengths of

separation. (That equals 18 feet minimum separation.) [See Figure #1]· Except when passing, you must ride to the OUTSIDE of the car lane, which is OUTSIDE of the

fog line, and ON the shoulder of the road. In the absence of an adequate riding surface on the shoulder of the road, you must ride NEXT to the fog line, and always well away from the centerline. [See Figure #2]

PASSING· Overtaking riders must pass to the inside of the bike being passed (towards the centerline), but

NEVER cross the Centerline [See Figure #2, Left lane riding - See Figure #3 and commentary under the heading: *** RIDING IN THE ON-COMING, LEFT-HAND LANE and NO passing in-between two bikes is allowed. [DQ #3]

· Absolutely NO DRAFTING or BLOCKING of another bike or any other vehicle is allowed.· Cyclists may walk their bikes if necessary.

· You are required to be body-marked and clearly display your Entrant Number. [DQ #10]

· Except for hand tools and individual parts (i.e.: a tire, a tube, a CO2 cartridge, etc.), No outside assistance may be received to repair any bicycle damage or failure. [DQ #11]

· Unofficial support crews or vehicles are prohibited from the racecourse during the race. (The presence of such people or vehicles will cause the disqualification [DQ #11] of the entered cyclist.)

· Ride defensively. Be aware of road conditions, vehicular traffic & other competitors.

BIKE COURSE DISQUALIFICATIONSYou CAN be disqualified for any of the following:1. Littering either the bike or the run courses. (Water

bottles, energy gel packets, inner tubes, CO2 cartridges, etc.)

2. No plugs in the handlebar ends. (Such safety violations are normally an automatic disqualification.)3. Crossing the centerline. (Such safety violations are normally an automatic disqualification.)4. Passing to the outside of another rider. (Such safety violations are normally an automatic

disqualification.)5. Unsporstmanlike Conduct — Any form of physical aggression or verbal abuse to anyone. (Race

officials, another participant, spectators, local residents, etc.)6. Failure to obey the police, course marshals and/or the event safety officials.7. Failure to wear a bicycle helmet, or fasten the chinstrap of the helmet. ASTM or Snell approved

helmets are Mandatory! Helmets must be securely fastened prior to mounting your bike.8. Wearing any type hearing impairments (or anything else that impairs your hearing during the bike) is

prohibited!9. Accumulating three or more penalties in the same event.10. Deliberately obscuring or discarding (including littering) your Entrant Number. (You are required to

be body-marked and clearly display your Entrant Number.)11. Accepting any outside assistance to repair your bicycle. (Someone else assisting and /or working on

your bike during the race.)

PENALTIES THAT WILL BE ASSESSED AT THE DISCRETION OF OUR RACE OFFICIALS:

BLOCKING· Participants shall refrain from intentionally or accidentally blocking, charging*, obstructing, or

interfering with the forward progress of another participant. If you impede, or otherwise cause another rider to lose speed, or force a change in another rider’s line of travel, that is blocking.

· If you crowd the centerline, cutting off other riders from the legal path to pass you, that is blocking.· Failure to keep to the OUTSIDE of the roadway and well away from the centerline (impeding normal

civilian vehicular traffic in an oblivious or inattentive manner) is also blocking. Time Penalties will be assessed.

*“Charging” (intimidation) Aggressive Proximity Intimidation — (Including, but not limited to: physical contact or the threat of imminent collision) will be ruled as “unsportsmanlike conduct” and WILL result in disqualification. [DQ #4]

DRAFTING**· The Drafting Zone (DZ) is the rectangular area surrounding every bicycle that begins at the leading

edge of the front wheel of the bike in front of you. The DZ is three feet wide to both sides of the bike

in front of you (That’s a total of six feet wide), and extends back three bike lengths behind each bicycle (That equals 18 feet of separation from the trailing edge of the front bicycle’s rear wheel to the leading edge of the trailing bicycle’s front wheel). [See Figure #1]

· You have ONLY 15 seconds in which to overtake and complete a pass, or you MUST drop back and move towards the OUTSIDE onto the shoulder of the road. After successfully completing a pass, you must move back OUTSIDE the car lane, OUTSIDE of the fog line, onto the shoulder of the road wherever possible, and always well away from the centerline.

• Ifyouhavejustbeenpassed,youarenowresponsibleforthe15-secondexposureenvelopeintheDZ. After 15 seconds you MUST be back at least three bike lengths (and be out of the DZ), or you MUST have completed re-passing, or Time Penalties will be assessed.

** “Drafting Trains” are prohibited! Any multiple of bikes (two or more) using drafting techniques to increase their speed and reduce their course time will be assessed double time penalties!

RIDING SIDE BY SIDERiding “Side by Side” is prohibited! Over time you end up both blocking and drafting. Dual time

penalties will be assessed to all riders involved for both blocking and drafting for this behavior during the race. This is a MAJOR safety violation on the racecourse!

RUN COURSE· Competitors may run or walk the run course.· Runners are not to cut the road tangents. Runners are

to run on the left side of the road (opposing traffic) at all times unless the course is marked (or course marshals instruct you) to take you to the right side of the road. This situation arises when running on the left side of the road will take you around a blind corner creating a hazardous situation for both the runner and any approaching vehicle.

· Unregistered pace runners are not allowed on the course.· Race numbers must be worn and be visible from the front.· Littering the course will result in disqualification. [DQ #6]

ONE LAST THOUGHTAthletes at any event are guests in the area where the

competition is held. No one has the right to prevent the progress of normal vehicle traffic, to litter the roadway or to verbally abuse the local residents (even if they instigate a verbally abusive encounter. PLEASE be diplomats and goodwill ambassadors for this unique jewel of an event! The privilege to be granted a permit and to continue an event is a function of everyone involved.
