Do you find that your students have many questions about the world around them? Do you want to encourage their curiosity and nurture their investigative & problem solving skills? Learn how to get started using Science & Engineering Practices from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to foster engaging student centered learning. Participants will:

• Become familiar with the Science & Engineering Practices in NGSS.

• Use observations and inferences to generate investigable questions.

• Gain a foundation for incorporating inquiry into your classroom.

Introduction to Scientific Inquiry – Elementary Science

The Next Generation Science Standards are here! See how these standards bring learning alive, foster curiosity and develop the skills of professional scientists. This workshop will unpack the architecture of the standards, the main shifts in teaching & learning science, and the grade-level progressions. Participants will:

• Become familiar with the three dimensions in NGSS.

• Learn the architecture of the standards. • Understand the shifts that occur in

teaching & learning these new standards

How do we cultivate the conditions for students to generate meaningful questions that they will want to investigate? This is the basis for student centered learning in science and across content areas. In this PD, we will examine the central role that questioning plays in the inquiry process. Participants will:

• Understand how to implement the NGSS Science Practice of Asking Questions.

• Learn how to scaffold students in generating meaningful questions about phenomena.

• Learn how to turn non-investigable questions into investigable ones.
