Assalamu Alaikum Dear Readers,

As I finish my first year as ECE Principal and my 14th year at BHA, I feel honored and proud to write about ECE accomplishments in our annual commemorative edition of the BHA Pride.Our main academic goal at ECE this year has been a stronger focus on literacy and Math fluency. With the tawfeeq from Allah SWT and the hard work of our teachers, our KG-5th grade students have im-proved significantly in their STAR Reading Assessment and MAP Diagnostic Assessments for Reading and Math. In addition, we had many successful extracurricular activities and special events.

The following is a list of some of the new programs and achievements we made at ECE this year:

-New Science curriculum -New Pre-K 1 curriculum-Structured mentoring/mentorship program for new teachers at BHA-New STAAR resources-New STAAR-like material for Mock STAAR-1st grade Prayer Ceremony

It is the goal of our teachers and staff to continue to develop innovative and creative ways to improve our students’ overall success. Through continuing education and professional development, we strive to find and implement exciting new strategies to expand our students’ horizons. We believe that all students can learn and it has been our goal, and will continue to be, to provide them with a positive learn-ing environment.

I look forward to continuing the long-standing tradition of excellence that has been established at BHA over the years.

As you end your time at Brighter Horizons Academy and embark on your journey beyond these walls, I would like to send you a word of pride and appreciation. You have put in a lot of time and effort into suc-ceeding at BHA, and I am very proud of each of you. Alhamdulilah you have excelled spiritually and aca-demically; your admission to prestigious universities and the scholarships you have obtained are enough testimony to your dedication of hard work and excellence.

However, your efforts will not stop now that you are graduating. You will find that as the stages of your life develop and you grow, different people will require different efforts from you. You should always put forth your best in any endeavor you are doing. Whatever you are, commit to excellence in whatever you do. Remember that our best role model, the Prophet Mohammed SAAW, always showed the believers and humanity the best of performance and attitude. Allah will hold each of us accountable for our efforts on the Day of Judgement.

Most importantly, never reduce your efforts in maintaining the Deen of Allah. We pray that your experience at BHA has already equipped you and prepared you to deal with different people and different situations on the college campus and beyond. Remember that you are the ambassadors of Islam to the world. Hold yourself to high standards and always remember that “Allah is seeing me, Allah is watching me, Allah is my witness.” This motto will always help you to watch what you are doing and keep you alert and in a state of thikr (remembrance of Allah) so that you’ll be pleasing Allah SWT.

I have spent many years at BHA and as your principal I consider each of you as part of my family. I have not only watched this school grow, but I have seen all of you grow as well.

I pray to Allah that you all find success in this world and in the Hereafter. I pray that you all utilize the skills you have learned in order to preserve your Deen and Islamic character and contribute to your com-munity and society at large. May Allah grant you tawfeeq and success in all your future endeavors. Ameen.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the achievement of our student Bilal Mukadam. MashaAllah he was ac-cepted into Princeton University in New Jersey for the 15-16 school year. Princeton is one of eight Ivy League schools in the US and has a very rigorous application process. We are very proud of Bilal for taking BHA to Princeton!

His older brother Omar was also accepted to Princeton last year. Bilal also was awarded forbeing a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship program. Earlier this year he presented his research at BHA which he conducted at UT Southwestern as part of their high school summer research program.

Congratulations, Bilal and family. May Allah continue to grant you tawfiq and success in all endeavors. Ameen.

We would like to congratulate Ayesha Rahman who has been awarded a full merit scholarship for four years from UT Austin for their Bio Medical Engineering Honors Program. Being the state flagship university, UT Austin does not award many merit scholarships. Only 7% of students get any merit aid from UT and a tiny fraction gets full scholarships. This is indeed a huge achievement. Earlier this year Ayesha was also recognized for achieving a perfect score on the ACT as well as receiving first place in the State Citizen Bee competition. Congratulations, Ayesha. May Allah continue to reward you in this life and the hereafter.

Bringing Islam to Competitions

Brighter Hori-zons Academy is the first Islamic school in Texas to join the Texas Association of Private and Pa-rochial Schools. The league was established in the 1970s to coordi-nate athletic com-petitions among private schools. In the summer of 2014 the new TAPPS Presi-dent visited then principal Muham-

mad Diwan and Athletic Director Akram Mutawe. They were pleased with what BHA had to offer.

“In order to join TAPPS you have to have the facilities,” said Mutawe. “You can’t just be someone based out of a house and call yourself a school and join. It wouldn’t be fair to other teams. BHA

having the fa-cilities to practice in was a major point in our be-ing accepted into TAPPS.”

BHA has done better than ex-pected in its first year as a TAPPS member.

“We were expect-ing more non-acceptance from other schools,” said Mutawe.

When Abdullah

Orfaly recited the Qur’an at a game, the opposing team stood and bowed in respect. There has been virtu-ally no backlash from other teams playing against the first Islamic school in TAPPS.

Despite doing bet-ter than expected, Mutawe says we have a lot of room to grow. “We have lots of natural tal-ent at this school,

but we will be working hard on developing our physical abilities through summer in preparation for next year.”

Part of that train-ing will include time in the new weight room. Weights and ma-chines were gen-erously sponsored by former board member Dr. Omar Burney.

By training and conditioning, we will be able to level the playing field when sports start again in the Fall.

Highlights

BHA Drama Club’s production of The Wizard of Oz. The theatre was sold out!

During “No Books Day” our students learn by alternative means with experiments and interactive iPad games.

During Math Night, students volunteered at stations to demonstrate how mathcan be interactive and fun.

The Math Department held Engineering Week at BHA which included guest speakers and creative projects by students.

The History Department held International Night at BHA which included a parade of the world’s flags.
