MARYSVILLE – The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Representative Jim Buchy of the Ohio House District 84, the Industry Service Award at the OCA awards banquet held recntly, at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference center in Lewis Center.

OCA and Ohio’s Country Journal jointly sponsor this award to recognize Ohio’s top service providers for the beef industry. The award presentation featured a video of Representative Jim Buchy that was generously sponsored by Darke, Mercer and Shelby County Cattlemen’s Associations.

This award is presented to people who are not beef producers, but rather to an individual who contributes to the betterment of the cattle industry. Representative Jim Buchy started his career by serving

his community through his family’s meat business in Greenville, Ohio. He was appointed to the Greenville Board of Education in 1980 and was elected to serve in the Ohio House of Representatives nine times between 1983 and 2000. Following his time in the House of Representatives, Jim became

the Assistant Director at the Ohio Department of Agriculture. In 2011, he returned to the statehouse to continue his work in representing agriculture.

He believes that agriculture is the base of our country’s success and has a heart for the beef industry.

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is a non-profit membership organization that represents the business interests and way of life important to farm families that

raise cattle. It serves as the voice and issues manager for all of Ohio’s beef cattle business including cattle breeders, producers and feeders. It is the beef industry’s grassroots policy development organization and is an affiliate of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association strives to maintain profitability and growth of Ohio’s beef industry, while providing consumers with safe and wholesome beef.

Poultry owners need to be aware of virusDARKE CO. – Three

worrisome strains of avian flu have been detected in birds out West. These viruses can cause serious disease in birds and their appearance has prompted poultry veterinarians at The Ohio State University to recommend that Ohio’s commercial producers and backyard chicken enthusiasts alike take precautions to protect their flocks.

The strains are related to a virus that circulated in Asia and Europe in 2014. In December 2014, they were detected in the Pacific Migratory Bird Flyway, in Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Idaho and Nevada. These viruses are classified as highly pathogenic, meaning they are extremely infectious and fatal for birds.

Migratory birds appear to be playing a role in spreading the virus, said Mohamed El-Gazzar, poultry veterinarian for Ohio State University Extension. OSU

Extension is the outreach arm of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

It’s important to note that these strains are not considered a human health concern, said El-Gazzar, who is also an assistant professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This has been strictly an avian disease outbreak — human illness has never been reported in relation to this outbreak in North America, Europe or Asia, and poultry products such as chicken and turkey are safe to eat.

According to the Ohio Poultry Association, the state’s poultry industry, including egg, turkey and chicken production, is valued at $786 million. Ohio ranks second in the nation in egg production and ninth nationally in turkey production.

“The first thing is to try to avoid direct contact between any domestic or captive type of bird and wild migratory birds,” El-Gazzar said. “Producers

are generally very good about protecting their birds, but they need to be aware that there’s an increased risk.”

Backyard poultry owners should consider keeping their birds in enclosed covered runs for the next several months or until the threat from the viruses passes, he said.

Other precautions El-Gazzar recommends include:

* In addition to avoiding direct contact between migratory and domestic birds, it’s important to prevent indirect contact, as well. “For example, if there’s an open body of water nearby that attracts wild birds, don’t go out, potentially step in fecal material, and then come back to your

birds and transmit an infection,” he said.

* Protect birds from other poultry populations. “We don’t encourage mixing flocks, mixing ages or mixing species,” El-Gazzar said. “Visitors to your bird flock, whether they’re from the neighborhood or from other farms, are highly discouraged.”

* Commercial producers or backyard poultry owners should boost insect and rodent control efforts. “Make sure your houses are animal-proof, so that raccoons, opossums or any varmints can’t get in, and bird-proof so that wild birds can’t get in.” Such biosecurity measures also include keeping feed and water clean.

It’s especially important to protect domestic birds from wild duck populations, El-Gazzar said, because they often don’t show any signs of disease even if they are carrying the virus.

“At the first sign of a problem, alert authorities so things can

be checked out,” he said. “If you notice increased mortality in an alarming manner, contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture. They will speak with you and determine if what you’re seeing matches the pattern of the highly pathogenic influenza.”

The animal disease hotline at ODA is 800-300-9755 or 614-728-6220.

Updates on the Pacific flyway avian influenza outbreak is online at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website, at www.aphis.usda.gov.

“We’re not trying to scare anybody,” El-Gazzar said. “Currently we don’t have any problems with this group of viruses here in Ohio, that we know of.”

GREENVILLE – Coming off the heels of a successful second year in 2014, Tractor Supply Company has announced the third annual Growing Scholars program in partnership with the National FFA Foundation. Last year, Tractor Supply customers donated $447,671, resulting in 334 scholarships awarded to FFA members in their pursuit of a college degree.

The Growing Scholars program will be supported nationally by each of the more than 1,400 Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply stores through March 1, which includes National FFA Week. Tractor Supply customers can donate $1 or more at store registers during the checkout process to support local FFA chapters and their members. Ninety percent of funds raised through Tractor Supply’s Growing Scholars program will be utilized to fund scholarships for FFA members. The remaining 10 percent of donations will benefit state FFA organizations.

“The funding we received

from our customers last year was tremendous,” said Tractor Supply President and CEO Greg Sandfort. “We’re honored to be able to provide critical funding to FFA members who intend to pursue a college degree. Many of these students go on to be agriculture educators – and we know how important ag. ed. is to our communities, customers, and the lifestyle they value. Local FFA chapters enrich the lives of young members by teaching life skills, citizenship and leadership qualities. Giving back to our 1,300-plus communities that we serve is very important, and the Growing Scholars program is one of the ways that we support our current and future customers and future team members.”

To be eligible for the scholarship program, students must be current FFA members and either high school seniors or a freshman, sophomore or junior college student seeking a two- or four-year degree or other specialized training program. Major areas of study will also be considered

when determining scholarship recipients.

“We can’t thank Tractor Supply and its customers enough for supporting FFA, student and alumni members and agriculture education in general,” said National FFA Foundation President Molly A. Ball. “The Growing Scholars program truly makes a difference in the lives of our youth.”

In addition to the Growing Scholars program, Tractor Supply

and the National FFA Foundation have many other joint initiatives, including the FFA horse evaluation career development event, National FFA Week and the annual National Association of Agricultural Educators Conference. At an individual store level, Tractor Supply continually hosts fund-raising events and works closely

“Local high school agricultural advisors and FFA chapters feel at home in their local Tractor Supply stores,” said Christi Korzekwa, senior vice president of marketing at Tractor Supply. “These groups often host fundraising events at our stores to raise money for community projects, like building

a school greenhouse, a new bridge in a public park or an animal care lab. Our stores also work with local FFA members to support specific programs and proficiencies by providing demonstrations from knowledgeable Tractor Supply employees and our vendor partners, which brings significant value to both organizations.”

PITSBURG – Members of the Franklin Monroe FFA Chapter recently completed several community service projects. The Human Resources Committee chaired by Chloe Casto-Clemons organized and completed four different projects.

The first project was the collection of food for the needy in the area. Members were encouraged to bring in additional canned goods for class

competition. Over 750 canned good items were collected and taken to a local church for use in their food bank.

The second project held was Toys for Tikes and Teens. Other FFA Chapters in the county also collected toys in their respective communities and they were taken to the local Toys for Tots headquarters in Greenville.

The third project this year was Operation Christmas Child.

PITSBURG – Officers of the Franklin Monroe FFA Chapter participated in the District 5 FFA Annual Evaluation process at Greene County Career Center. This evaluation process was for all schools having Agricultural Education programs in the seven county area of west central Ohio. The process evaluated individual students in the areas of State and American Degree applications and in over 50 Proficiency Award areas based on the student’s Supervised Agricultural Experience Projects. Also evaluated were the officers

of the local FFA Chapters on their respective Officer Books

The three officers that were evaluated were Secretary Chelsi Edger, Treasurer Ashton Shellabarger, and Reporter Erica Haxton. Chelsi’s Secretary Book was rated gold in District competition receiving a perfect score. Ashton’s Treasurer Book was rated gold in the District competition. Receiving an Honorable Mention for reporting the FFA News was Erica Haxton with the Chapter Scrapbook. Chelsi and Ashton will be recognized at the State FFA Convention in May.

Members decorated over 35 shoeboxes and filled them with soap, toothpaste, candies, small toys, and other items. These were made for children from 2 to 11 years old. Once the boxes were complete, they were taken to an area church that made sure the boxes got shipped in time for the Christmas season.

The fourth project for the Franklin Monroe FFA was collecting mittens for the FFA Mitten Trees. A total of 50 pairs of mittens, hats, and

scarves were collected for this cause and donated to the local Head Start program.

Other ongoing projects include hosting a blood drive, collection of pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Hospital, Adopt-a-Highway, and WalkAmerica. If you would like to assist the members of the Franklin Monroe FFA Chapter in any of these programs or have questions concerning these projects, contact them at 947-1207 ext. 2304.

New gardening plans…Join the ClubVERSAILLES – As the new

year opens to snow and wind, let’s remember to think about and plan our garden growing season – a number of ways. Not only map out our planting schemes for the existing areas in your yard, but look through catalogs for new plants or get out the list that was made last year and see what you didn’t get then. Maybe you want to expand or ‘remodel’ planting areas or even add new types of garden spots, whether indoors or out.

There is an additional way to expand your gardening plans…

Join the Versailles Garden Club. They have an active club in the Versailles area and like to work throughout the year to bring in speakers to meetings, attend seminars, host plant sales and holiday decoration sales, work on community beautification projects, sponsor a flower show during Poultry Days, contribute in an activity project at the Versailles Health Care Center by assisting residents in making fresh flower arrangements, recognize citizens within the local school district with Garden of the Month awards, and sponsor

a scholarship for VHS graduates who major in a horticultural major. In 2013, the Versailles Chamber of Commerce awarded the club with the People, Pride and Progress Award for the community projects completed.

The club has experienced recent retirements of members to ‘honorary’ status (after decades of membership) and some members have moved away from the area. They have welcomed some wonderful members in the last few years, but they would like to continue to welcome even more this year. They have some

charter members still very active in the club and that indicates membership of over 50 years. Last year there were 10 members who received special awards from the Garden Clubs of Ohio for exemplary standards for membership of at least 25 years in their club.

If you are interested in joining or visiting at one of their monthly meetings, call 526-4798, email [email protected] or visit the Versailles Garden Club Facebook page and leave a message.
