Introduction–kncu International Workcamp

The Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) was established in 1954, under the

Ministry of Education, following the Republic of Korea’s admission to UNESCO in 1950.

Since its establishment, KNCU has recognized youth as a driving force for social change and

has promoted youth participation in society at the national and international levels in line

with UNESCO’s strategy of action with and for youth.

The 1st international workcamp, organized by KNCU in 1966, with 49 participants from 7

countries, was one of KNCU’s youth programmes designed to achieve this goal. Since then,

the international workcamp has been an annual event. More than 5,000 youths from around

the world have taken part in the camps, working towards the restoration of communities and

international solidarity for peace. The international workcamp programme has constantly

evolved over the years, with various names and formats.

In recent years, it has followed the model of international workcamp implemented since the

1920’s in many parts of the world. KNCU aims to provide young people with an opportunity

to implement activities that foster global citizenship, as well as promote peace, human rights,

cultural diversity and sustainable development through international workcamp programme.

Jeju Island is a volcanic island, dominated by Halla-san (Halla Mountain). The value of Jeju

Island has been recognized through its designation as a Biosphere Reserve in 2002, as a

World Natural Heritage site in 2007 and as a Global Geopark in 2010, making this sub-tropical

island the only place on earth to receive all three UNESCO designations in natural sciences.

Participants joined in community renovation work and leaded multicultural activities with

local youth in Sinpung village. Main activities were building stone pagodas using the island’s

basalt stone, which make up Jeju’s distinctive scenaric feature, repairing old houses, painting

the common facilities of the community and running an afternoon school class for local

children in which all participants shared their countries and cultures.

Oe-moeng-a-bang-jan-chi-ma-eul

‘Oe-moeng-a-bang-jan-chi-ma-eul (어멍아방잔치마을)’ is a small

seaside community in the foothills of Halla mountain, which is a

UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Since this is a remote area

from tourist destinations, the village is still well preserved and

maintains the traditional life style of Jeju Island.

The heritage of several prehistoric dolmens are scattered through the community making

the cultural land-scape remarkable. Yet, the village faces issues in regards of declining number

of residents. In order to deal with these challenges, this community has been developing

education programmes for children from the cities to visit the village and study with local

children during the semester. They also run a programme for people to stay in the village and

experience the tradition and culture of Jeju Island.

place to be listed as a national wetland protection area in Korea in 2001, and in 2008, was also

registered on the site list of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Recently, Muan’s tidal flats

have been slowly threatened by the construction of infrastructure for tourism and industrial

development. The local community has responded by exploring ways to harmonize the

protection of tidal flats and the local development with assistance from specialized NGOs and

local government. Participants worked on preserving the tidal flats, such as by monitoring of

the state of conservation of the tidal flats, discussing each country’s policy on the preservation

of seas or in-land waters. Participants also worked for the local community, helping out with

farm work and making signboards to raise people’s awareness of the importance of the tidal

flats. A junior camp for local children was also organized by the participants, in which all could

share about their countries, cultures and natural heritage sites.

Where Field and Theory Meet Eco-Horizon Institute

The local organizer for the KNCU-KIA International Workcamp

is Eco-Horizon Institute, which is one of Korea’s most

prominent non-governmental organizations in the field of the environment, particularly wetlands.

The Institute researches and suggests alternative policies for the preservation of the

environment and the sustainable development of the local community. The Institute puts a

great emphasis on the role of the local community in the protection of the Muan tidal flats.

Without the active participation of the local community which has co-existed with the tidal

flats for a long time, this area cannot be preserved. The International Workcamp is one of the

means by which the Institute can raise local people’s awareness of the value of the Muan tidal

flats and strengthen the capacity of local people.

The Institute specializes in the field of wetlands, as well as in studies on the Korean DMZ

(Demilitarized Zone). They have cooperated with KNCU since 2011 on a variety of KNCU’s

youth programmes.

The ArIrANg WorkcAmp IN SouTh koreA 2016 CLaRa GóMez OCaña (Spain)

I decided to apply for a workcamp because I was seeking new experiences in my life, and

human beings (implying social values…) and travelling are the key ingredients for me. When

I knew South Korea was gonna be my destination I felt very excited because it was such an

unknown country for me. But also a bit scared, as I was gonna travel alone, not only to the

workcamp, but around the country afterwards. It was exactly the kind of challenge that I was

looking for.

I arrived at the UNESCO centre in Seoul the first day feeling a little bit insecure about what was

going to happen, about if I had taken a good decision or not. Looking around, most people

were in little groups already. Nevertheless, that feeling only lasted a minute. Immediatly other

campers came to me to introduce themselves, and the good sensations started arising.

The location of the workcamp is amazing, what was very surprising for me. In the middle of

beautiful mountains and river, and a very cozy village. What first catched my attention in the

workcamp, was people’s attitude. We were 40 volunteers (20 Koreans and 20 international,

mainly from Asia), and everybody was very kind, friendly, open minded, helpful, with a good

sense of humor… since the beginning. I went there alone but I really did not feel alone at

any moment. It was a really exceptional social environment, during the whole 10 days of

the workcamp. Also, we were living, working and spending the whole day all together, what

made bonds grow quicker.

We finally didn’t work in the Arirang road as much as I expected, because of the weather (it

was monsoon season). It was hard work but also a new experience, and rewarding when you

appreciate the results afterwards. The volunteering work also included cultural interchange

with local people. This part was fantastic. We met local children and shared activities with

them, and also people in a local market. They are not used to meet foreigners and they were

also very happy with us. The workcamp also included some free time and leisure activities that

58

were organized by the Korean campers (flashmob, zip wire, excursions, cooking Korean food,

etc.), what was very fun as well. The Korean campers had a key role in the organization and I

think they did very well. You could tell that they were taking care of the international campers

all the time, what was nice.

In the workcamp I have had the chance to know a lot of Asian friends, what I was not used to,

and I still keep in touch with them of course. I have also been able to know more about the

Korean culture, which is very interesting, help local people with the volunteering work, learn

about myself in this intense new experience, discover a beautiful country, etc. I feel very happy

and fortunate about having experienced this workcamp, and I’m sure that future campers will

enjoy it a lot as well.

JeoNgSeoN: The road to restoration (an extract from “길 – The road”)

FRaNCiS GaLLaRDO eNRique (Philippines)

“It is not that I walk the road because there is a road But that a road becomes the road when I

walk it.”

The road in Jeongseon thrives. Its Arirang melody, that has been passed down over the years

in the region, continues to relive the tragic love story between a man and a woman. I was

walking by the South Han River when I first learned about the star-crossed lovers’ fate. This

was where it all happened. This was where the woman professed her undying affection for

the man. This was where she struggled and eventually drowned when she swam for love. I

felt the sorrow and the anguish myself. I even heard the river was crying an eerily haunting

song, perhaps one of lost hopes and promises. As I peered my eyes into the body of water, I

came to realize that the same river is united by two different current streams. It was a respite

I thought for there was actually a union of some sorts. To my standpoint, a symbolic marriage

between the spirits of the man and the woman is generated again and again in the waters of

the river. Also in Jeongseon County, at the Jeongseon Arirang Culture Foundation Center, the

UNESCO International Workcamp was held from 5-14 July 2016, of which I was a part of as an

international volunteer. This brought together some diverse individuals from nine countries

who all lived in the same place, spoke the same language, ate the same food and cooperated

and collaborated with one another in creating an intangible cultural heritage of humanity

on its own. Being one with the group of volunteer workcampers, I contributed to providing

education and familiarization about my native Philippines to middle school students within

the community. I was more than happy to have shared to them a little country presentation,

a few mango balls and peanut candies, and a lot of the Filipino smile and warmth, which

among other things, best represent my country. Throughout the course of the workcamp,

I found myself endeared by the beauty of the natural landscape at Jeongseon. This made

it very conducive for me to work on several significant activities day by day, from learning

how to sing the conventional Arirang folk song, how to dance to the tune of its hip and rock

60

version, and how to restore the functionality and the aesthetic appeal of the Arirang Road,

which was once used as a passageway to the nearby local marketplace. The experience at

the 5-Day Public Market, which operates every five days throughout the year, was delightful

to the senses too. It was a privilege to have a firsthand understanding of the taste, the sound,

the sight, the smell and the feel of the market. At the market, where the buying and selling of

goods are negotiated, I thought I have discovered the best-kept길.

3 secret as to why such a lively civilization exists among Korean folk villagers. The key is

mainly due to their passion to live simply, to fill their tummies with healthy cuisine and to

greet their daily conundrums with a dose of music for entertainment and revelry. Beyond

being described as the Arirang Mecca in Korea, Jeongseon has offered me as well its share

of fun recreational activities such as the Railbike, the Hwaam Cave tour, the Skywalk and the

Zipwire at Arii Hills, and the rice cake making activity. More importantly, I believe the road in

Jeongseon has led me to gain newfound friends, both from Korea and abroad. I cherished the

conversations I had with each of them at the workcamp and from these aggregate of stories,

I got to know better their ambitions and frustrations. It was a known fact that my age is way

more senior compared to the other workcampers so several of them have approached me

to solicit for sound and good counsels. I was candid to tell them pick my brains only if I have

some answers to their questions. In fact, it was overwhelming in a nice way, for my reputation

as a little big brothercum-guidance counselor, spread around like a wild fire. All of the people I

have spoken with individually have commended me for giving them straightforward advices.

But truth be told, it was me who learned lessons from each of them. Their personal histories,

struggles and most of all, their dreams to win their battles, were collectively the energy that

brought me more inspiration to keep living and loving the work that I do as an international

development practitioner. The road in Jeongseon definitely restored my faith in humanity and

in selflessly sharing one’s skills, talent and time for the benefit of society.

61

The 10-days work camp was a life changing experience for me. It was the first time ever

I joined an international work camp and actually staying in a foreign country for nearly 2

weeks, and I was more excited than ever. The trip has totally changed my perspective about

Korea. By being able to soak in the culture and connect with lovely Korean campers, it made

me see Korea with a whole new pair of eyes!

I still remember the very first moment I arrived to Jeongseon. Korean campers and the local

hosting organization greeted us with such warm embraces. We were welcome with traditional

dishes in a very famous restaurant in the area. The dishes were phenomenon and full with

love.

After a filling dinner, we sat down and gathered in a circle to introduce ourselves. I was lucky

enough to be in pair with a very friendly and cute Korean camper (I still do not know how to

write his name, it’s my bad). He confessed that he is not good at speaking English but he has

always tried to practice English with me and I love his enthusiasm and integrity.

It has been a long time since I had to do some labor-intensive work like removing invasive

species or chopping out trees and bushes. I thought I would be drained of my energies after

a long working day but it was exactly the opposite. I found myself with so much energy every

day and continually wanting to work hard to contribute to Jeongseon community. Besides,

we also had culture classes and spent time with children to learn and know more about

Korean culture, as well as to explore the beauty of Jeongseon.

I enjoyed every dinner we had together. That was the time we had chance to cook in a group

and the BBQ night was the best one ever. It would arguably be what I miss the most about

Korea and the camp. Not just the actual food, but the atmosphere – everyone gathering at

the front yard, sitting on the grass, smoke in the air with exceptional smell from the grilled

meat, the unspoken struggle of trying to cook food and consume it before somebody else

JeoNgSeoN WorkcAmp

62

swoops it, bottle after bottle of Soju and beer, cheering every 5 minutes, other delicious sides

of food, the loud conversations and shouting across long. It’s the epitome of Korea and I just

simply LOVE it. Besides the fact that I stuffed myself with delicious meat and get properly

inebriated, we were truly having good time to share our own story and feelings. When we

worked together, there might have been some difficulties and misunderstandings since we

are from different parts of the world with different ages, views on life and culture. The dinner

time was truly a precious opportunity for us to reflect on our work and solve any conflict as

well as prepare for the next day. I miss the night we stayed up late and drunk together, sharing

about our normal life. I told them how I study and live in Vietnam and they shared with me

their life as university students in Korea. I was impressed by the way they spoke about their

country, their journey to find the best of themselves. I found how similar our life is. We are

students and no matter we are Vietnamese or Korean, we somehow experience the same

struggle. We need to cope with stresses from school, family and the society as well. We shared

how we manage stress and how to get away from it. We also share what is our future plan

and what we want to become in the future.

I was enriched with new knowledge in such a great experience. It was sad to leave Korea but

it sure won’t be long until I return to such a beautiful country. Life is a sum of our experiences

and this was definitely an enlightening one.

One of the best experiences of life that I have lived was to volunteer for UNESCO this summer

2016 on Jeju Island, South Korea. In this camp I gained lively significant moments while doing

work with my new friends that I had the joy of meeting in two weeks, which were sufficient

not only to meet but also to become good friends, and although that at first I was worried

about the language barrier, they were all so friendly and kind so this was not a big obstacle to

interact among ourselves.

In these two weeks full of work, which many considered heavy and tedious, but while we

were doing with open heart and mind, we made great memories. Some of the best moments

I could enjoy was playing with children of elementary school. The children were so active,

playful and vivacious that they always left us exhausted after chasing them to enter the room,

especially after playing with them, who always had a smile and great energy to play with us.

But what I remember most were the friendships I made with my new friends. Simple cooking

or cleaning tasks allowed us to know each other better, learn from their cultures and adapt to

our personalities, while excursions to beautiful places of the island Jeju let us unite. Campers

learned more as people learned more about Korean culture and made new memories, which

we all can share, no matter where we are.

Certainly participating in this camp as a volunteer was one of the most rewarding experiences

I've ever done in my life, so I recommend all young people experience at least once in life this

type of experience that cannot be removable and will always be remembered. We should not

feel afraid of language barriers or culture, because these barriers come from a person’s mind.

One of the highlights of 2016 was the work camp in Jeju-do held by the Korean National

Commission for UNESCO. It was a great experience discovering one of the most beautiful

natural places in the world along with the South Korean way of life in the countryside. I really

enjoyed it and it has made stories to tell about to people around me, as it combined many

aspects of life we are not used to seeing in the city nowadays, like carpentry, painting, cleaning

and even teaching and playing with kids. It was something I wouldn’t have been able to do in

Madrid and it’s something that I won’t forget for a very long time.

In my opinion, the basis of this workcamp were teamwork and culture.

Culture because we had to experience South Korean culture and gastronomy, also traditional

habits of Jeju island, which were highly recommendable for future ‘campers’. We also got to

share our own cultures with South Korean fellows and to the kids too, thanks to this they

got to know how different things are outside of South Korea in terms of food, habits and

traditions, making it a great exchange between cultures.

Getting to see the traditional villages and the natural attractions of the island was a great

part of this experience, as we got to see places which we would’ve never known outside the

Internet.

For me it was a great cultural experience, as in Spain and Europe, we are almost not fond of

Korean culture, and thanks to this workcamp I got to know a very interesting country deep to

the roots of its culture.

And teamwork, because without it, it would have been impossible to develop the

assignments we were given. Thanks to all the campers effort and attitude, we were able to do

the things we were supposed to. It was a great experience to meet all of the campers as they

were so different people living in the same place and working together. I got to know great

persons and even made friends I hope I can keep for a long time and meet again.

There is much credit to be given around for this splendid experience, not least of all a big

thanks to UNESCO for having had the will and the desire to set-up such an educational

program in the first place. I must thank all of the Korean volunteers for their effort, and for

being such great hosts. I must thank the village residents for their hospitality and guidance

during the workcamp, in particular our boss, who was a real example of hard work and

leadership. Their efforts had contributed to helping the workcamp run smoothly.

Lastly, I’d like to thank all of the volunteers for being great persons and for giving me a lot of

memories to keep in my life.

Buzea aNDReea BiaNCa (Romania)

During 2016 summer I had the chance to turn twenty in a novel place for me: Muan, South

Korea. It was the first time I have stepped on Asian ground and I must admit that there were

a lot of differences comparing to any other European country. From the beginning I knew

that this experience will take me out of my comfort zone, will make me deal with different

situations in which adaptation is the key in order to succeed. Fortunately, I had on my side

great people who made the transition a lot more pleasant.

Our adventure began on the 18th of July, in Seoul at the UNESCO Hall. There we met each

other, ten international volunteers and we started our coach to Muan, where the five Korean

volunteers were waiting for us. Our activities during the workcamp were various: we have

been working on the fields, weeding, picking onions or putting fertilizer to the watermelons,

we have organized a Junior camp for the locals’ children, we have attended a UNESCO debate

and last but not least, we have been in trips around Korea.

For me, the most enjoyable activity was the UNESCO debate. It was very interesting to talk

about the scholar system around the globe, to track the main weak points and try to come

with solutions or to talk about the wetlands of our countries. Most of us were surprised by the

level of difficulty exceeded by the Korean scholar system and also by the fact that someone

hardly can succeed later in life after he or she has failed in the early years of school.

Kia workcamp was not only about work. During these two weeks we have experienced a lot

of Korean activities, from eating Kim-chi (김치)-fermented cabbage prepared with various

seasonings, to wearing Handbok-the Korean traditional dress. Additionally, we have visited the

KIA factory where we have been all surprised by the high level of automation and by the low

rate of factory errors, which make KIA Motors an environmental friendly factory, and we have

visited a Korean temple. In another day we have been to the Suncheon Bay Wetland reserve,

a place of a rare beauty, the home of the biggest colony of reeds from Korea where a lot of

82

species of rare birds live.

This workcamp also taught us to cope with difficult or new situations, like Korean-style

sleeping, working in the hot weather, sharing the room with other eight volunteers, or not

touching a fork for two weeks. All these challenges helped us to better understand each other,

to be able to empathize and to realize that a job can be done in multiple ways, that there is

not necessarily a best way to do something, and that no matter which path you take, there is

always an alternative.

Finally, I would like to thank the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, Eco-Horizon

Institute and KIA Motors for organizing this workcamp and offering us the chance to discover

so many new things and to forge longstanding friendships. Also, I must be grateful to KiMoon,

Woo, Brandon, Michael, Heesoo and YuBeen-our Korean volunteers and hosts in the same

time, who made great efforts that KIA workcamp be a total success. This educational program

played an important role in my development and I am sure that what I have learnt in those

two weeks in Korea will be valuable in a lot more future situations and will help me be a better

person.

Looking back to those two weeks spent in Muan County there is tremendous gratitude

towards Korean National Commission for UNESCO, KIA Motors and Eco-Horizon Institute for

making this opportunity available for youth all over the world. It makes me both humble and

proud to have experienced being part of Korean community and leaving my footprints on

Muan tidal flats. In exchange, I would like to offer my insights from my stay in your country.

Straight from my arrival to Seoul, I understood that Korean transportation system was as

developed as expected for a city of 10 million people. In addition, most people on the streets

were using mobile phones, as was I. One wonderful mobile application with metro lines

allowed me to arrive to UNESCO House on time where I met other enthusiastic volunteers to

share this journey ahead. It truly was an educational journey to memorize and give forward to

next generations to remember.

Where did the learning happen? It was then when I met the Korean organizers over our first

joint dinner table I tried to learn proper spoken Korean language which, in my surprise, may

even be easier to learn than Estonian with its 14 cases. During those dinners I also learned to

adjust my dietary needs, to keep my posture by sitting on the floor while eating, to share my

country’s food culture, and I got to know about local eating customs. Preparing and having a

meal together brought all participants closer together, especially when they recognized some

similar ingredients used in their traditional dishes.

Another great outdoor classroom was the work field. Connecting with locals based on your

actions, facial expressions and body language which reminded me all the ways people all

over the world are similar, and that words often are used to confuse people but when we stick

to the basic communication, a common understanding soon can be found. Of course, to my

surprise, I left the work camp with purple bite marks on my neck, which actually was explained

to me as a sign of fondness from locals. Therefore, sign language can be quite confusing as

84

well. But the way the local people do small innovations every day, the way they care about

their workers, roads, land and the sea, is remarkable. Only saddening thing was that there is no

active trash recycling system in the country side which do not leave the locals a lot of options

to deal with waste except to burn it. I hope that a country with this kind of technological

boost will soon get there and even more can be done for the environment. When we visited

KIA Motors factory we got a pretty good idea what can be done with robotics, and how

this could also uphold environmental protection. This reminds me how comforting was to

find other volunteers with the same environmental education background, so you could

constantly come up with joint ideas how to solve some fast growing environmental problems.

I hope to keep in touch.

To get to the work field, a common transportation was organized. Connecting with other

volunteers while driving to work in a truck load of people was always a nice way to start

your day. There is so much we could learn from each other just because we have different

past experiences and memories collected in different environments. I have gained many

new realizations, ideas, and methods for teaching, song lyrics, and communication ways

throughout this experience. For example, I understood the significance of the DMZ biosphere

reserve and mud flats in local’s everyday life not because I read about it but because I was

there, helping, and talking with people. And when you walk up to the Dragon Mountain in

Suncheon Bay surrounded with reed beds, and ride a boat through salty wetland during one

of the hottest day in the summer, you really understand why your camp slogan is “safety first”,

and why all the stores are packed with ice coffee and funny looking ice cream. And of course,

ceremonial tea drinking in Korean traditional house wearing Korean hanbok gave us all

realizations about peace, gratitude, tolerance, and gifts from Earth.

Truly educational was to hear Suncheon Bay mayor’s speech and I am happy that I was given

the opportunity to represent volunteers with a short speech as well. I also really enjoyed

our discussion session on education systems and costal/environmental policies, I only wish

it would have been even longer that all could have the chance to present their country’s

policies. Nevertheless, all of us had a chance to organize a fantastic global junior camp for local

children with games, dances and opportunities to learn language, taste sweets, videos and

stories about each volunteer’s home country. It was a blast! And it actually broke our prejudice

of Korean kids being very shy and quiet.

I could write a book about my visit to Korea but I will respect the time of the readers. I still have

to praise all the organizers for such an experience, thank you. After eating all those spicy meals,

85

watching a fun baseball game, having nice talks with people, sharing dances, singing karaoke

together, giving hugs at the farewell BBQ party, going fishing with locals, leaving behind a

street sign with my name on it, visiting Muan Tidal Flat Centre Museum, and watching natural

beauty surrounding our locations, I know that my time in Muan work camp was well spent

and I will have plenty of stories to tell for my own kids in the future.

When my boss at work told me about this opportunity to go to South Korea to help

local people with community work, I was like…why not, that would be such an amazing

experience. Before coming to South Korea I have been to Asia or somewhere close to our

workcamp site, so I thought why not, let’s give it a try — I am not going to be selected

anyway, but who knows, if I were lucky that would be just awesome and something very

different and new for me.

And indeed it was… Being in a place, where you can not understand a spoken language at all,

where people look at you like you are somewhere from the future or from the moon. Though

I arrived on the same day, when workcamp started and did not have enough time to get lost

in South Korea alone, I could easily tell that I arrived into the different part of the World I was

living in before and very different place from those I have visited before.

At first sight one might tell that the whole workcamp is based on the physical work and

a little bit worthless, because young people, most of them do not have any of farm field

work experience, and are very slow or bad in simple work such as weeding. In fact we have

not done a lot. I bet that working without our help local people having so many workers

in numbers would have done the same work in a couple of days. But I am not feeling

disappointed of this. As far as I understood and felt the point of this workcamp was not to the

amount of acres weeded or the number of signboards made, but the fact itself that we were

there to help these people and we did it honestly by putting our hearts and sweat into it. That

fact that we spent our vacation, summer holidays time (it was 75 % of my annual holidays time

from work) instead of going to summer resorts, being at home with our relatives or friends to

travel more than for a daytime to get to their village to meet them and to do something good

for them. This is what really matters I think. To be devoted and open — hearted.

As well as open to other participants of the workcamp. Even though we arrived from the

87

different parts of the World, with our different languages, histories, backgrounds and cultures,

just after a couple days passed I started to feel like being in a strong community, like a

family. We spent all the time together, and did everything together. Worked, cooked, slept all

together what made us very close very fast. Though every participant was older than 20 years

(I am 25) I felt like a kid, leaving from the children summer camp, where I met my very good

friends. Even when I felt really tired after long hours work in the farm fields in the extremely

humid and hot weather I did not go to bed as soon as I get the chance, because I knew I

would miss another chat with my new precious friends from the workcamp.

Workcamp was the best organized event which one might imagine, because I got a chance to

see the country, which probably I would not visit by myself anyway, meet very interesting and

special people from all over the world (I still keep in touch with more than 5 people from the

workcamp), visit and get to know the country from the inside, through the daily life, through

the eyes of the local people. That it is priceless. This experience will stay with me for the rest of

my life. This is the type of a story you watch in the movies people telling to their kids.
