Buzzing with eager anticipation, the Reception class climbed aboard a “very

big bus” on 29 May 2015.

We were about to embark on our adventure to Butterfly World and excitementlevels were rife! After soaring through lunch and exploring the outside garden,we were whisked off to the lesson area. Here, our minds were enriched withnew knowledge about insects and other creepy crawlies, even getting a reallife demonstration of the cockroach!

With our minds taking flight, we fluttered into the Butterfly World enclosedTropical Garden, coming face to face with iguanas, spiders, snakes, parrots, guinea pigs, tortoises, monkeys, bats and butterflies!

With minds enriched and hearts aflutter, the Reception class returned home, ready to discover the creatures in our own gardens.

Lwandile Shabane, 7yrs

The Year 2’s thoroughly enjoyed being creative during Art classes this

semester. They produced beautiful pieces that have further explored

our theme of ‘Plants and Animals’. The students are becoming more

comfortable with pastels, paint and wax crayons. It is always such a

treat to see young talent explore and create a world through colour.

Miss A Crake Year 2 Teacher

Here is what some of the year 2’s had to say:

Our Busy Little Picassos

paint.”

Rebecca Wiese,

“I have fun in Art class because we get to make our hands messy.”

Takura Murau 8 years old

“It is fun in Art class

because it is messy. We get

to use lots of colour.”

Linamandla Moyo

Throughout the 2nd Term, the Year 3 students have been

learning about Ancient Egypt. All the students were fascinated

by the lifestyle of the Pharaohs, the different Gods and

Demons as well as the mummification process.

We were extremely excited to learn that the King Tut

Exhibition was coming to Cape Town just at the right time.

Arrangements were quickly made to ensure that our tour was

booked and thanks to some very helpful parents we managed

to organise an outing within just a couple of days

On Friday morning, 5 June the Year 3 students left the campus

filled with excitement. Upon arriving at Grand West, students

were escorted into the exhibit and provided with audio

remotes. The entire exhibit was accompanied by audio

descriptions about each artefact and some areas video clips

were shown to explain the amazing discovery of the tomb of

King Tutankhamun.

Life size replicas were made of the various items that were

discovered in 1922 by the Archaeologist, Howard Carter. The

exhibit proved to be an interactive learning experience and

really captured the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians.

The Golden Throne, Chariots, Amulets, Head Gear and statues

of the Gods are just some of the items that were on display,

but unfortunately, much to the disappointment of the

children, the mummy of the King remained safely in the tomb

in Egypt as it is too fragile to transport. Despite this, students,

teachers and parents alike thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Thank you to all the parents who helped with transport andaccompanied us.

If anyone heard the sweet sound of Christmas carollers last Saturday the 6th of June, they would have thought it strange?Either there are some very eager beavers getting ready for Christmas, or the teachers of BIS had lost their minds. Neither ofthe mentioned was the case. For the staff’s benefit and pleasure a themed function was held for us: “Christmas in June”.

When walking into the Junior hall it was a sight to behold, with Christmas lights winking at us, inviting us into a cosy ambienceto surround our cold bodies from a harsh winter night. The décor was magical and sufficiently transported us to a winterChristmas wonderland. Lovely touches such as handmade place cards were provided to make us each feel special andappreciated.

We were treated to an introductory Christmas carol, are were serenaded by the private students of Johann and delighted bytheir perfectly choreographed weaving and bopping through our tables - and the best was still yet to come… the food..

A starter of tummy warming butternut soup was laid down for us followed by a traditional Christmas main of crispy roastpotatoes, succulent roast meats and flavourful veggies, and to finish a decadent chocolate brownie desert.

The conversation flowed and many of us got the opportunity to get to know each other better, some dancing was had, muchlaughter could be heard and a relaxed yet eventful evening was had by all, it was a welcome mid exam break.

Thank you to Debbie Krastin for organising this wonderful event and spoiling the staff. A special thank you to our peppywaiters and waitresses, the SRC and year 11’s (who grinned and bared the cold and seemed genuinely happy to be there forus). I know I am definitely looking for the next one.

What we need to mention is that he has only taken pianolessons for the last four months.

Well done, Michael. We are very proud of you.
