PATIENTSWITH HepatitisC whoalso carry a particular type ofgene may bemorepronetode-velopingdiabetes, a two-yearstudybySirGangaRamHospitalhasfound.

Thestudyon more than 100HepatitisC patients hasfoundthatin thosecarryingnon-CCgenotype of interleukin-28bgene,the possibilityof develop-ingdiabetesis31percent,com-paredto13percentinthosecar-ryingCC genotypeof thesamegene.

Thestudy hasbeen acceptedforpublicationin thecomingis-sueof theJournalof ClinicalandTranslational Hepatology. DrAnilArora, the principalinvesti-

gatorof thestudy, saidthenon-CC genotypes were associatedwithinsulinresistance.Thereisan associationbetween inter-

    leukin-28bgeneand insulinre-sistance,whichin turnleadstodiabetes,addedDr Arora,headofgastroenterologyatSirGangaRamHospital.

    Doctorsstudied115patientswithHepatitisC-relatedchronicliverdiseasesbetween2012and2014.

Whenweput boththecate-gories of the interleukin-28bgenetogether,diabetespreva-lencewas 22percent, whichisanywayhigherthan thegeneralpopulation. So patients withhepatitis, irrespective of thegenotypeof thegene dohaveahigherchanceof contractingdi-abetes. But those withthe par-ticulargenotypeweanalysed,orpatients froma particularsub-group of hepatitis C, have anevenhigherchance of gettingthedisease, saidDr Arora.

Doctors have said in thestudythat testing for thisgenemay be useful in patients ofHepatitis C, in order to deter-

    minetheir likelihoodof devel-opingdiabetes mellitus.

Recently,manyepidemiolog-icalstudieshadshowna signifi-canttwo-way associationbe-tween diabetes mellitus andHepatitisC virusinfection.Whilemany of these have shown thatpeoplewith diabetes are moreprone to acquire Hepatitis C,studies are now showing thecorrelationistruetheotherwayroundtoo.

According todoctors, whenHepatitis C and diabetes affectpatients atthesame time, thereis rapid progressionof liver cir-rhosisand ahighchanceof livercancer.Becauseofthistwo-wayassociation of diabetesmellitusandHCV infection, itis advisablethat all diabetics should gettestedfor HCV.Thisis especiallytrue for those diabetics who

have liver functiontestsabnor-malities whichcan bean earlyindicatorof developinginsulinresistance, said Dr Arora.
