Singapore River Festival 3

On behalf of the Singapore River Festival Organizing Committee and Singapore River One, I wish to extend my sincere

appreciation and a heart-felt ‘Thank You’ to our sponsors and partners for this festival. It is these key partnerships and collaborations

with such like-minded partners that will allow the Singapore River Festival to grow

from strength to strength, year on year. Your support allows us to achieve and surpass our goals of putting up a key festival that

both Singaporeans and tourists can be amazed by!

SRO’s aim for organizing Singapore River Festival 2015 is to complement the SG50

celebrations marking our journey, the people and our values, by showcasing Singapore River’s rich cultural heritage

and its modern charms. Through a kaleidoscopic line-up of exciting activities, good food, trendy bazaars, imaginative art installations and stunning performances by

renowned local and international artists, this festival will definitely have something

for everyone attending to enjoy!

Brought to you by Singapore River One (SRO), our inaugural Singapore River Festival 2015 is a free community event celebrating the history and heritage of the Singapore River – where it all began – via an awesome line-up of art, music, food and theatrical performances.

We have always wanted an iconic festival to call our own with a singular aim to remind Singaporeans and residents of Singapore River’s rich heritage and its diverse offerings. This festival is a ground-up initiative under SG50’s Environment & Infrastructure Committee. Through this festival we want to celebrate Singapore’s Jubilee Year, as well as bringing more locals and tourists to visit and re-connect with Singapore River through the plethora of activities that we have organized.

We pay tribute and explore various ‘River Stories’ that have made Singapore what she is today.

I wish to thank Mr. Chia Ngiang Hong, Singapore River Festival 2015 Chairman, and the Organising Committee for their tireless work throughout the whole process. It is through their diligent efforts that this event has come to fruition.

It is also important to recognize and thank the SG50 Committee, the various government agencies, and all the key supporters who have made this event possible. What a fantastic journey it has been getting here!

Join us as we celebrate this momentous milestone in Singapore’s and SRO’s history, and create even more memories for years to come.

Singapore River Festival 5

A part of the Singapore River Festival, River Stories translates the memories, feelings and forgotten tales of the Singapore River into multi-disciplinary displays and shows across

the three quays. Paying homage to the olden-day street performers that used to entertain the early migrants, the event brings their stories back to life with a modern spin. Enjoy

puppetry, roving street performances and storytelling, and even a bit of music.

STORIES AND MEMORIES

Explore the history of the Singapore River through contemporary and traditional performances

TRADITIONAL STORYTELLINGA highlight of River Stories is Hug the Tree, a puppet show by local children and family

theatre group Paper Monkey Theatre. It tells story of a girl named Amrita who loves trees

and promises to protect them. But when the powerful king orders more wood for

his fortress, Amrita’s promise is tested. Be sure to bring your children. The 30-minute

play will be in English. Please refer to www.singaporeriverfest.sg for details.

MODERN PERSPECTIVESTraditional folk tales aside, you can also

take a surrealistic look at the history of the Singapore River, through the work that

local video and sound artists Brandon Tay and Safuan Johari of audio-visual collective

Syndicate will present. Please refer to www.singaporeriverfest.sg for details on

performance venue and timings.

Derrick Siu, Founder Profile Never believing he would ever do parkour - thinking like most people that it was too extreme and asking for trouble based on all the videos he had seen, Derrick initially dismissed the discipline. Luckily, however he was properly introduced to it by chance in late 2011 through a friend after sustaining an ITB running injury preparing for a marathon. It was then that he was actually able to experience Parkour’s true value and power, realising it was not about big jumps and stunts often portrayed in online videos, but more about seeing possibilities, challenging one’s own limits, reigniting one’s sense of wonder and learning to master one’s body, mind and spirit.

It was a beginning of a new journey, and after making a stronger commitment to the craft in mid 2012, he recruited a group of friends to

train with. From this group grew what is now the  Superfly Monkey Dragons Parkour Freerunning Academy and Agency.

For Derrick, Parkour and Superfly have joined the dots from his past. They bring together his experience in personal development, medicine, media and events and allow him to pursue his passion of helping people and community through what has become one of the fastest growing discplines in the world today.

He plans to continue to share his passion and inspire people to discover and live their potential through movement!
