ProTec Polymer Processing will launch five-strand laboratory LFT lines for developing highquality long-fibre-reinforced thermoplastics bypultrusion at this year's Chinaplas (16 to 19May 2017, Guangzhou). These Industry 4.0 capable lines with complete materials handl -ing capabilities are equipped with the newuser-friendly SOMOS® control/excellence controller. Such laboratory lines allow LFTcompound manufacturers to be more respon-sive by permitting on-site development, testing and reliable scaling up of their formu-lations, so minimising downtime.

From lab to productionAn investment in the future, the laboratory lines allow LFT com-pounders to be more flexible and independent. By developingtheir own formulations in-house in parallel with ongoing produc-tion, line users can respond more rapidly to market requirements.The laboratory lines have a narrower die width and are de -signed to handle five glass fibre or three carbon fibre strands.Otherwise, the design of the modules and their complete inte-gration with materials handling components are the same as inProTec's conventional pultrusion lines. A keystone of the line isa high-performance underfed compounding extruder equippedwith a SOMOS® Gramix S gravimetric dosing system capable ofaccurately dosing and mixing up to seven components. As a re-sult, a very wide range of individual formulations of the poly-mer matrix can be produced very flexibly directly in the process.The new user-friendly Industry 4.0 capable SOMOS® control/ex-cellence controller means all modules can simply be selectedcentrally via a touch screen operator console: line speed,throughput of the underfed extruder and pellet choppinglength can all be varied. SOMOS® systems for drying, convey-ing, dosing and mixing the various material components are al-so integrated into the line controller. USB and SD ports meanthat up to 1,000 custom formulations can be saved and reli ablytransferred to production. Because SOMOS® controllers areused for both the laboratory and the production lines, produc-tion parameters can be straightforwardly transferred, so mini-mising downtime due to product changeovers. With their re-mote control function and internet access, the lines can be re-motely serviced, optionally also via a WLAN hotspot.

plastic which is difficult to recycle due to the fluctua-tions in quality of the materials, including for exam-ple the type of contaminant and the respective diffe-rent degree of contamination. EREMA developed theINTAREMA TVEplus system especially for this type ofplastics processing which, with a market share ofover 80 per cent in Europe, has managed to gain aclear edge over its competitors. This study, which compared AD*STAR cement sacks with ce-ment sacks from China (sewn sacks made of recycled woven

polypropylene tape fabric) and Saudi Arabia (paper), showsthat AD*STAR sacks have the lowest greenhouse potential ofthem all. Also by other criteria such as acidification potential,ozone depletion potential, energy and water consumption,they were demonstrably the most eco-friendly. “A changeoverto AD*STAR sacks for cement packaging would be of specialinterest to China,” says Hermann Adrigan, sales director ofStarlinger, assessing the situation. “Not only would it ease theimpact on the environment by considerably reducing CO2 emis-sions, but using AD*STAR sacks would enable the automationof the entire chain of cement filling and transport processes toa much higher degree. Fully transparent EPET packaging with handlefunctionA key concept in the packaging industry is productdifferentiation. Accordingly, suppliers are constantlylooking for innovative or recyclable materials for newproduct ideas. The fully transparent, newly introducedEPET class IV material, capable of being extrusionblow moulded, is an interesting candidate. This mate-rial has sufficient stability for extrusion blow mould -ing. The parameters of the improved class IV are

higher than the 1.0 PET recycling stream launched on the mar-ket. The typical challenges of PET blow moulding are exceptio-nally well mastered by the high-quality EPET class IV materials.EPET IV has a comparatively high resistance to wear. The mate-rial can be completely melted in the extrusion unit without caus ing excessive wear. In respect of the machine, special re-quirements must be met to provide a robust, reliable, fully au-tomatic production in a 3-layer operation. Blow-moulding ma-chines from BEKUM, such as the HYBLOW 407 D, have beenspecially designed for high performance in these demandingEPET applications. The HYBLOW 407 D allows the reliable pro-duction of EPET bottles with flash removal and directed bottletransfer integrated into the machine. Calcium carbonate for effectively cutting costsThe use of calcium carbonate (chalk) displays excellent barrierproperties. The improved UV protection function is also attrac-tive for packaging manufacturers. However, it is in respect of itsextremely high cost effectiveness that the use of calcium carbo-nate (chalk) is decisive. Michael Mehnert: “With a 20 l canisterfor the packaging of cooking oil, 24% of the HDPE, based on atotal weight of only 900 g, could be replaced by chalk at a farlower price. The cost difference between HDPE and chalk in thisspecific case was about USD 1,000 per tonne. At a machineoutput of 210 items per hour and 6,000 production hours peryear, this results in possible savings of more than USD 270,000per year. These are very exciting prospects for a packaging ma-nufacturer.”

Substitution by recycled materialThe use of recycled materials (PCR = post consumer recycled) asa substitute in the middle layer is the other ideal route. The tri-extrusion technology from BEKUM is the right solution for thesmooth and efficient production of multilayer systems. It pro -vides the opportunity of including inexpensive, but varied, recy-cled polymers (old plastics) and their different rheology in theprocessing between the material layers of the new material.This option was presented to professionals in the industry aspart of the launch of the new electric blow-moulding machine

EBLOW 37 at the K 2016. A three-layer20 l canister with a combined materiallayer distribution made of chalk and PCRwas shown. The production parameters infigures: an output of 240 20 l canisters/h(918 g net weight, 1,188 g gross weight)has a flash waste of 23%. The potentialsavings for packaging manufacturers areenormous. The flash waste generated dur ing the production process is 100%reused in the production and processing.In addition, 20% of the HDPE new mate-rial can be replaced by the less expensive

High extrusion quality with high-tech spiral distributorblow headsAt the Chinaplas 2017, the focus of BEKUMs exhibition will once again be on the spiral distributor blow head technology.The unique spiral distributor blow heads are characterised byan excellent, uniform wall thickness distribution in the parisonand in the end product. This results in a significant potential forpackaging manufacturers to optimise the single-layer parisonquality. However, the spiral distributor blow heads from BEKUMare even more impressive in respect of items with a multilayerstructure. In this regard, manufacturers of packaging productsdo not need to dispense with user friendliness. The heads canbe easily adjusted by the operator from the front of the ma -chine. In addition, the head design enables faster colourchanging times than conventional designs. The consequent significant increase in machine productivity is of enormous in -terest to packaging manufacturers in regard to flexibility andprofitability. The consumption of change material for cleaningcan also be reduced to a minimum by means of spiral distribu-tor blow head technology. The compact design of the spiral dis-tribution blow heads is a further advantage. Their smaller sur -faces mean considerably less energy is required to heat them.All in all, the high-tech spiral distributor blow heads from BEKUM provide packaging manufacturers with interesting op -tions to increase the quality of the items, save time and costsduring production and a general improvement in adding value.

Asian market, presenting the ACF 820 model in operation dur -ing Chinaplas exhibition. This model is configured in three sta -tions (forming - cutting - stacking), with formig mould size of820 x 650 mm and clamping force of 240 kN. CENTERWAVE 6000: Measurement of large tubes withmillimeter wave technology With the CENTERWAVE 6000 SIKORA presents a key player forthe measurement of diameter, ovality, wall thickness and sagg -ing of large plastic tubes during extrusion. The system is basedon millimeter wave technology and measures tubes from 110to 3,200 mm. The CENTERWAVE 6000 is available in a rotatingversion and provides thus a wall thickness measurement at 360measuring points of the circumference. Alternatively, a multi-axis system with static sensors is available. Both systems mea -sure on an absolutely non-contact basis, do not require coupl -ing media, no calibration and are independent from materialand temperature of the tube. “The CENTERWAVE 6000 is pio-neering for the continuous, online measurement of large tubesand sets new standards for a line control and quality control ofthe extra-class. At Chinaplas, Guangzhou, May 16 to 19, ILLIGwill present for the first time the production of thermo formed liquid-tight containers with lid,Hall 5.1, Stand K21. The containers are manufac-tured on an automatic pressure forming machine, type IC-RDK 80, with a 12-up containermold out of transparent PP. The Heilbronn company developed the „take away container“which can be tightly closed by a lid based on requirements by customers from the Asian market.

An IML unit removes the prin-ted blanks (labels) from a magazine and places them in themold cavities in the forming station of the thermoformer. Everycavity can be equipped individually with a label, thus productchanges can be performed fast and easily. The label bonds trueto contour and permanently with the part wall during the sub-sequent forming process. With the MRS ex-truder Gneuss offers a processing unit which enab-les PET to be extruded cost effectively, without anypre-drying or crystallisation. This applies both to theprocessing of both virgin and post-consumer bottleflake with a residual moisture level of 1 % and in some cases more. The extruder will also easily han -dle PET / PE scrap (laminated sheet) and mixtures ofPET and PETG. Thanks to the very high polymer sur-face exchange rate under vacuum in the MRS sec -

tion, a vacuum level of only 25 bar is required in order to achie-ve 100 % moisture extraction. The system achieves the requirements of the FDA, EFSA and Invima withoutrestrictions. PET sheet made on the MRS extruder is thereforesuitable for food contact applications whatever input material isused and with out any pre-treatment of the input material. KCS maintainsthat the practice of doing offline film thicknessmeasurements still has a prominent place in qualityefforts even with the wide spread use of high qua-lity online thickness devices. With extensive experi-ence in offline gauging, this point could not beclearer as shown with these examples where theoffline gauge “saved the day”:

• A density value of just one layer had been set incorrectly inthe gravimetric dosing system and the average film thicknessdid not comply with the requirement.• Thin spots in the film were detected by the offline gaugewhich was missed by the online gauge. This was because eventhough an oscillating blown film gauging system sends 360averaged thickness values, one per degree, there are inherentlyareas of film that are missed by the online gauge.• A thickness profile in transverse direction (TD) can never bebetter than the variation in machine direction (MD). Yet onlinegauges are designed to operate predominately in the trans versedirection method of measurement. Only a few online gaugescan even do a MD measurement. Therefore there are quality issues where having only an online gauge is not enough. Justimagine how long it would take, using a hand micrometer, tomeasure and report an entire profile from a 10 meter (~33 foot)long sample and then generate the appropriate reports.At the K 2016 many offline film thickness gauging system havebeen on display. The Filmtest 3G from KCS has these importantadvantages:• Each film strip is measured over its total length. Multiple filmstrips can be virtually joined to show the full TD profile.• Sample feeding into the Filmtest 3G is greatly enhanced withthe new Electronic Stability Program (ESP). The idea behind the seminal Breathing Skins showroom is touse the outer envelope of build -ings to variably adapt the indoorclimate to the needs of the occu-pants. The project centersaround a breathing facade skinusing transparent solid sheets ofthe polycarbonate Makrolon®.This is modeled on a natural, organic skin.

可呼吸表皮陈列室

陈列室可以测试可呼吸表皮技术的

Covestro recently won the innovationaward of the European Polycarbo -

nate Sheet Extruders Organisation (EPSE)for this development. It was the eighthtime the organization had held the BestPolycarbonate Projects Competition torecognize outstanding applications withpolycarbonate sheets.

Controllable permeabilityTobias Becker’s proprietary developmentmakes it possible to infinitely vary thepermeability of facades and thus adaptthe indoor climate to the user’s specificrequirements. Germany’s Federal Minis -ter for the Environment Barbara Hendricks and Maria Krautzberger, presi-dent of the German Federal EnvironmentAgency, have now presented Tobias Becker with the Federal EcodesignAward in the Young Talent category. The inspiration for developing a breath -ing facade skin comes from the idea ofventilating an interior via pore-like airducts without creating a draft. Theseducts can be sealed pneumatically so asto be airtight by applying a small over-pressure to the facade element. A low-energy compressor controls around 140pneumatic “muscles” per square meterwithout any visible technology. Applyinga small underpressure widens the rever -sible air ducts fitted between two perfo-rated, transparent solid sheets of Makro-lon® GP clear 099 polycarbonate fromCovestro. Tobias Becker’s proprietary development makes it possible to infinitely vary thepermeability of facades. It comes from the idea of ventilating an interior via

pore-like air ducts without creating a draft. Their permeability for air, but also forsee-through visibility and for light can be controlled individually, by means of

pneumatic “muscles”

changes. Permeability for light and air aswell as see-through visibility can be mo-dified locally and gradually. The conceptis based on biomimetics, the basic ideaof which is to observe nature closely andturn the findings into technical applica - tions.

Breathing Skins showroomThe showroom is a prototype for testingbreathing skins facade technology andexperiencing it at an emotional level. Theorganic-like facade skin and the soft,meandering form of the Breathing Skinsshowroom complement each other per-fectly. Geometrically speaking, the fa -cade is made up of six arcs with differentradii. The solid sheets’ good thermo -form ing properties produced excellentresults.The facade is over 10 m long, has anarea of 25 m2 and is split into several ele-ments. To reinforce the image of a con -tinuous facade, the load-bearing parts ofthe sandwich facade elements are allmade of solid polycarbonate sheets. Theinterior has an area of 8 m2 and a clearheight of 2.4 m.A wooden structure with edges 4.5 by4.5 m long marks the vertical limit of the

interior. The ceiling panel rests on fourround, recessed larch supports mountedoutside the interior. The modular compo-nents are so small and light that each ofthem can be carried by two people. Thelaminated birch surfaces make you wantto touch them, and create a warm effectthat provides an excellent contrast to theplastic facade.

More than just transparent glazingThe showroom demonstrates that poly-carbonate sheets can be used for morethan just transparent glazing in architec-tural applications. Their mechanical pro-perties and the fact that they are milledduring the machining process enable easy integration of controllable elementssuch as the pneumatic muscles. Transpa-rent facades of all building typologiesthus become a tool for controlling ener-gy management and interior climate.
