A TIRELESS MAN

- Do you ever manage to “lay-off” ?

G.C: With great difficulty, I am a detail and pre-cision-maniac, which takes up lots of hours afternormal working hours; however, when I manageto spend some time with my family it is wonder-fully relaxing.

- Talking about your wealth we know that youown several companies in many countries, so forus it is very difficult to decipher the numberseven though in our last article we expressedsome values based on the information we hadgathered. Would you like to add something?

G.C: I can say that I am not complaining. And Ihate talking numbers if it’s not a company we areanalysing….

- What is it you love?

G.C: Everything that life offers me every day, Ilove life in all its expressions

- Anything you never told anyone about yourself?

G.C:Lots of things… which I will keep on keep-ing to myself…

In the room, a wall 9 metreslong covered with screensthat follow the Stock Exchange,and... Frank Sinatra’a piano.Behind a huge desk, an immense

window overlooks the panorama of theGrand Duchy of Luxembourg and lets theSeptember breeze penetrate the room:this is where Giovanni Calabroreceives us. Not bad for a 41 years oldguy, coming from a humble family from atough and complex region in the south ofItaly.

After the economy and finance articlepublished in our last edition about thisgentleman whose main characteristic ishis refusal to have anything to do with thepress since he fears auto-referencing andmass publicity, after months of constantinsistence, finally accepts a meeting. Here he is, in front of me, on neutralgrounds: that of normal people, and hebehaves like a good schoolboy: he givesin! This afternoon is different from all theothers for him and myself too; I had imag-ined this meeting as a formal invitation,.Instead, after having met Givanni Calabroin person I understood that a conversa-tion with him must be on two tracks. Heis serious, austere when he talks abouthis profession, but playful and ironicalregarding all the rest… maybe this is thesecret of his personality: a brilliant mindmatched with an absolutely uncommondetermination, tireless, acute, demand-ing! This is a man who allows for no sec-ond chances! The challenge of his management

A titanic task that he recognises, exclusi-vely for TENDANCE, as his most impor-tant challenge is to be CalfinInternational’s Chairman. As such heheoverlooks and leads the consolidationof the group and its continuous expansionin other types of businesses. Assessingrisks fascinates him. All the Group’s deci-sions are scrupulously analysed and plan-ned. What worries him most is that every-body must feel good at doing what theyare doing and there has to be communi-cation between the different areas; heconstantly helps checking processes andevaluating risks, considering all thevariables of each and every investment.

- We have been told that you made yourfirst investment when you were 19 yearsold?

Giovanni Calabro: Yes, it was of a pro-fessional nature since I personally had nomoney to invest and I supported compa-nies in the purchase of real estate comingfrom other companies undergoing bank-ruptcy proceedings. Substantially a jobwhere knowledge of the legal and com-mercial rules was the key to success.

- What kind of a relationship do you havewith money?

G.C: Absolutely detached, I can’t con-ceive something just for the sake of mak-ing money, ambition is definitely a wordthat explains several needs, interior andexterior.

- How does the current financial crisisaffect your companies?

G.C: This crisis is defi-nitely a very strong one,it has changed severalbalances and statuses inthe world of economy, positions that were con-sidered untouchable. Thecrisis is like a war, itleaves behind a lot ofc a s u a l t i e s .Unfortunately… but likeafter any war, there’srebirth and reconstruc-tion. My companies aregrasping several oppor-tunities in this sense, consolidating on theone hand in the field of strategic rawmaterials and on the other hand throughinvestments in the energy sector in theso-called “emerging market”.- In which countries are you graspingthese opportunities?

G.C:In all the former ex-iron curtaincountries, hence in Eastern Europe aswell.

- What would you say about the secret ofyour success?

G.C: Look, in everything I do I use these3 sentences: in-depth analysis, persever-ance and knowing when to stop…

A N A LY S I S A N DP E R S E V E R A N C E

THE CRISIS ISLIKE A WAR, ITLEAVES BEHINDA LOT OF C A S U A LT I E S

I LOVE EVERYTHINGTHAT LIFE OFFERS MEEVERY DAY, BUT MY LIFEIS THE EXPRESSION OFTHE IMMENSE LOVE IHAVE FOR MY FAMILY
